Album Description

Old West dreams meet Southern memories in the tracks of Searchin' for a Rainbow, The Marshall Tucker Band's fourth album. Released in 1975, this song collection found the group refining its multi-faceted sound into an appealing country-rock essence. Still present were the jazz and blues-based elements that had always made Marshall Tucker a distinctive unit. By dressing up their music in Western garb, the band found a way to reach a huge new audience—all it took was a little "Fire On The Mountain" to light the way. "We'd found a bit more direction on how to design songs for a record," says lead singer Doug Gray. "Our record company Capricorn had always said, `Try to give us something that would work on the radio.' We tried to do that, and at the same time please each other. We were known as a jamming band. This was the first time we really tried to give them Marshall Tucker's interpretation of what a hit song was." Helping to spur things on was "Fire On The Mountain," the lead track off Searchin' for a Rainbow. Released as a single in the fall of '75, the tune reached #38 on the pop charts. A vivid, Old West, lyric-storyline combined with bluegrass-tinged instrumental licks and an ear-grabbing chorus brought Marshall Tucker its first Top 40 hit.

My musical tastes run to the eclectic- classical, Beatles/British Invasion, Johnny Cash (especially the Sun Records years), '60's and '70's classic rock, country and many other genres as well. I am not a huge fan of this band, in fact the only songs by them I've heard are on this album. I first listened to this album in a friend's dorm room at college. The whole record just works for me. I take it as a unit, and I really like listening to it. It's worked for me since 1975, and I'll probably keep listening to it 'til they put me under.

Yes I said album I wore our 3 LP's and I also have a new one in the wrapper. I also have the cd and it is on my computer and my Ipod as well. Not many days go by and probaly never a week goes by that I don't listen to this music. It is a part of me.

All the finest ingredients of rock, country, blues, and jazz blended into a down-home gumbo as only The (original) Marshall Tucker Band could do it! The remastered series sounds superb audibly, and the packaging is beautifully restored- complete with historic photos and interesting liner notes. The Marshall Tucker Band remastered recordings of the original band- "Self Titled" through "Tenth"- are well worth the investment.

I've been an avid record album collector for over 30 years. I had about 400 original albums. However, last October, I was a victim of Hurricane Wilma in the Florida Keys and suffered major damage to my home. Two of the most precious possessions were lost to me; my personal and family photographs along with all my record albums. These are things I'll never be able to replace. I am grateful that no one was hurt and that I've been able to rebuild the damaged parts of my house.
I was around for the advent of Southern Rock and saw both The Marshall Tucker Band performing these two albums and The Allman Brothers Live at the Fillmore East as the second opening act, behind the Elvin Bishop Group, for Johnny Winter And. I'm just happy that I was able to replace these treasures with CDs. I'll always miss my vinyl, but am very glad that even though I won't have the sentiment of the original record albums, that I can still have the priviledge of enjoying the great music in what is now a much higher quality format.

Prior to the release of this album, the Marshall Tucker Band primarily played long, drawn-out jams. Let's face it they patterned themselves after the Allman Brothers. It was the 70's and people had a longer attention span back then. Lacking the commericial success that producers, studios, and record companies wanted, they too had to enter into the pop/country genre. Although, I like most of the songs on this one. Especially Virgina (which isn't one of their more notable songs). The title track and Fire On The Mountain are also good selections. Walkin' and Talkin' (A Texas swing-styled song)and Bob Away My Blues, Is a good honky-tonk selection. I don't care for Keeps Me From All Wrong. Bound and Determined sounds a lot like the Allman Brothers...I like this one. Can't You See (live) and It Takes Time (live) are very good songs. This CD shows that the MTB were destined for greatness! Although, I still like a lot of their older music better than this!

    The CD, "Where We All Belong" apparently is not in print; however, I must include a review:
    Low Down Ways, IN MY OWN WAY and Try One More Time are great wonderful tracks, it's too bad that the other tracks are okay, I do like "This Ol' Cowboy" but not as much as I like the ones I mentioned. Still, it's an important landmark album and is a must for every MTB collector. Forget the Warner Brother releases, the formula ain't there. Rest in peace Toy and Tommy, I'll miss your down home friendliness!

    A definite five star recording. Eight songs and all of them classics to my ears. Love the poignant opening track, Fire On The Mountain with a stunning acoustic guitar arrangement. Numbers like Walking' And Talkin' and Bob Away My Blues have a soothing jazz feel. During my college days I can recall a die hard Motown/Soul fan liking these two tunes. It probably was one of his few forays into rock and country music. Can't You See is just brimming with a rock n roll spirit as Toy Caldwell's vocal and guitar solo are both just super in a live setting.

    The Marshall Tucker Band certainly cover a lot of ground on this fine release. The instrumental arrangments just captivate my ear. Pick it up at once as I feel its their best work.

    It's hard to get too detailed about this album due to its relatively short length, but what is here is fantastic. Released in 1975 when the MTB was churning out albums one after another, Searchin' for a Rainbow has been described as a country album and even more so than others that were released in the 70's. However, if one listens to the band's self-titled debut effort from 1973, they get the sense that there is little difference between this album and the others of the same time period. Bottom line: both albums are excellent.

    Turning back to this one, SFAR begins with "Fire on the Mountain" which is as good as any MTB song there is (I also said that about "Take the Highway" in my review of their first album and I stand by that--both are unbeatable). Toy Caldwell's (r.i.p.) steel guitar really makes the song. The title song is another gem with Dicky Betts from The Allman Brothers Band providing the guitar solo. "Virginia" is absolute pure gold and I've been told is/was a fan favorite at live shows. Other great songs include "Bob Away My Blues" and "Keep Me from All Wrong".

    It makes no difference if you call this country, country-rock, rock and roll or whatever. Just call it what it is: good.
