I've always had a fascination for Grim Reaper. The imagery and album art alone was enough to attract me to their third album. But more on that later.

This is a combination of their first two albums and I'll have to admit, their best two. The songs are okay with a few memorable tracks, but they are definitely cliché ridden and generic. Steve Grimmet's vocals are okay when he doesn't get into those long annoying high pitched wails. I can't say a thing about Nick Bowcott's guitar playing as it rocks. However, I kind of wish he would have done more jamming and solos.

I also have their third album and after listening to it several times, I could not remember a thing about it. At least I can remember a few songs off this CD!

Overall, this is not bad stuff, it just does not blow me away and will probably not blow most of you away either. Beavis and Butthead hated them but I like them well enough that I will not bury this CD and forget about it. It is a double dose of generic clichéd rock, but who cares? You could do a lot worse. Recommended.

Grim Reaper are known for campy horror lyric, a singer who could scream so only Rob Halford's dog could hear, and repetitious lyrics. People complain about those qualities, but thats what makes them so great. This disc contains their first two albums, so its a bargain already. Now if you make those two albums a great blitz of heavy metal, that even better. Even though these song rock, they all have the same standout feature: the excellent guitar work of Nick Bowcott. Bowcott could shred like no one's business. Every song on here rocks. My personal favorites are "Wrath of the Ripper", "Fear No Evil", and the infamous "See You In Hell". I recommend this for any 80s metal fan, and especially fans of Judas Priest. If you like these albums, I suggest you pick up their third and last album, Rock You To Hell.

Well, for almost the price of one CD you can get the two best Grim Reaper albums (they recorded only three), and since "ROCK YOU TO HELL" is no big deal, you will possess everything tha matters from this band in a single CD. A good deal.

Although Grim Reaper has a muscular and visceral sound, and its guitarrist and founding member Nick Bowcott is a talented axe man, you can not be fooled by all the five stars reviews here. Nostalgy is a strong influence over people's tastes... In these days of fabricated and talentless "artists" like Beyonce, Backstreet Boys, Spice Girl, Britney Spears, anything from the past that has a solid rocking performance tend to be viewed like a mega banda. Grim Reaper was a very competent band, buch too much limited in their own style. That's why they succumbed.

These guys may be a part of that fabled NWOBHM, but don't be fooled! This is fat-man rock all the way, slavishly derivative of Judas Priest but with mega annoying lead vocals thrown in just to make things more bowel-distressing! There should be a law against this type of aural effrontery! Straight into a loaded toilet with this one!

grim reaper's best two albums all on once cd...how they id it i'll never figure out...theres a reason they didnt combine their 3rd and final album with fear no evil or see you in hell...because it [was bad]]! the title track was all it had going for it...these two however, are classic...see you in hell's production sounds slightly muffled but if can get past that, and you will,you'll hear and appreciate what awaits your metallic eardrums...my favorite tracks are "see you in hell", "fear no evil"," matter of time", "never coming back","liar","wrath of the ripper","final scream","r&r tonight",and the ballad "the show must go on"...you're obviously familiar with grim reaper or you wouldnt be bothering reading this review, so what are you waiting for? this kicks major maximus, so order a copy before they disappear!

5 out of 5 stars Finally a Messiah with fervor!.......2005-10-20

I've hunted a thrilling performance of The Messiah through 240 versions so far. This is the best I've found. Some are self-conscious, dutifully singing as instructed. Some are almost childish in their lilt. Some are overblown with so much bombast that you can barely hear the heart of the music. Some are concentrated on faithfulness to the original instruments. If you want a performance that will make you shiver with the power and joy of the music, this is the one. The singers are singing about GLORY. They sound as if they are ecstatic. The musicians are at one with the music and they create a virtual cathedral wherever this CD is played, just close your eyes. Or, let your own imagery, be it celestial, or of great oceans...carry you away.

There are so many performances of the Messiah out there that it is very difficult to point to a difinative one, but I'd put this in the catagory of the "very good" ones. As other reviewers have said, every performance is different and has its own character. Each has stronger and weaker points. Here the conductor and musicians have made good, solid musical choices. There is an amazing attention to detail which is not so obvious the first listen through but which makes the piece shine. The tempos seem to be right on, and there is no frivolous over-embellishment by the soloists. There is no attempt to be showey. The dramatic dynamics in the first section of the overture are interesting, but seem to work after you hear it a few times. This performance also includes sections which are often omitted (Second half of "He shall feed his flock," "Thou art gone up on high," "Great was the company of the preachers," and "Death where is thy sting"). I prefer the more intimate quality of a small ensemble of musicians to the mega-performances by the London Philharmonic, Vienna State Opera Orchestra, etc.. As with this performance, the smaller group lends a clarity to the music, where the larger ensembles can get a little "muddy" at times. Just my personal preference. Overall, this is a very good performance, and certainly the low price (being on the Naxos lable) makes this a clear choice.

I was more interested in "The Messiah" for the religious content than as a music critic, but this was too much. The strings are tinny. The orchestra is plodding. The soloists and choir are thankfully very good and seem to understand the meaning of the words. It is a shame the sound mix is uneven. The male parts come across loud and clear, but the poor women. For instance, No. 9 Oh thou that tellest..., the soloist sounded like she was singing in an echo chamber far from the mike. This is one of the most disappointing versions of "The Messiah" I have heard in a long time.

I was really surprised with the new that the Messiah's New World premiere was held at Trinity Church in October 1770, twenty-eight years after it was written. This fact only will make one proud in having this CD among his collection.

Anyhow, this is nothing more than a historic detail and would not count if this recording had not an outstanding first-rate ensemble of singers. Without doubt there is no definitive version of Messiah. Each one has its own distinctive touch and feeling and exploring it is always a pleasant journey through imagination.

As stated by the conductor: "we must concede that performing Messiah with twenty singers and an appropriately balanced instrumental ensemble represents, at best, an imperfect comprimise", it will be easy to understand that this recording does not stand among the greatest and will probably carry some imperfections. I will mention two that kind of disppointed me a little bit. The Overture and the Chorus Worthy is the Lamb, for some reason misses the habitual vigor and strenght. Everything else is great and this is definitely a worth buying.

This is not the best recording of Messiah but it is by no means a disaster. Susskind was an able conductor with a valid view of this great piece. The recording from the 1950s is more than adequate (there is some roughness in the treble but it is full and clear - though some edits are very obvious indeed). The orchestra is excellent and the choir sing well. The soloists - all of them - are superb, among the very best in any version of Messiah! Susskind's tempos are slow by modern standards but there is good rhythmical bounce and a genuine sense of the greatness of the piece. If you can adjust to the broad tempos and the big scale conception then you will discover important aspects of this masterpiece in this performance - and the set costs next to nothing!

This is only my second one star review. And I am rather generous with stars. But this recording is just horrible, especially considering that all of the participants are legendary musicians. First of all, this is extremely old fashioned Handel. The textures are way too heavy for music of the baroque. But worst of all, the performance just sits there like mud on your tires that won't come off. Yes, the price is very low, but whatever you do, do not buy this recording.

I have had a CD of the London Philharmonic version of the Messiah conducted by Fredrick Jackson for several years and enjoyed listening to it. However, the quality of the recording leaves something to be desired.

    Grim Reaper was one of the last of the NWOBM bands, and they were over shadowed by bands like Motorhead or Iron Maiden, but still a good band in their own right. Simply put, their sound had quality, good musicianship, and were heavy without resorting to noise and cookie monster vocals. The band was a little dark, but not emo deppressing "dark". If you like straight forward metal that is heavy and dark, but still maintains a listenable sound, and you don't give a flying **** about trends or fashion, then you will like this band.     First off the five star rating is to offset the complete joke of reviews by some of the pop influenced MTV culture. The album deserves an honest 3 and 1/2 stars and is worth a listen for early 80's metal heads and those newbies wanting more N.W.O.B.H.M.

    Grim Reaper are certainly not a band that will merit critical review in the same vein that a Nirvana or a Pearl Jam recieve credit. Nor are they deserving of such acclaim; however, that is not to say they were a complete waste of time either.

    This album was recorded in 1983 originally on the small indie lable Ebony records. The fact they caught such attention and went on to moderate success in the U.S is a credit to their popularity and a testament to some decent material. The album is raw, in your face, no excuses early 80's metal.

    There are several good tracks with the standout and staple being See You in Hell. Dead on Arrival, Liar and The Show Must Go On round out the other noteworthy tunes.

    Bottom line- Early 80's raw metal heads will get it, appreciate it as a period work and enjoy for what it is. If you are of the nu-metal genre - stay away.

    A lot of the people here are forgetting one thing when they start comparing this interesting NWOBHM band to crappy hair metal like Spinal Tap (who, despite not being real, released a couple albums) and Poison: weren't "The Ripper" (Judas Priest), "Black Dog" (Led Zeppelin), anything by AC/DC, and "Sweet Child O'Mine" (Guns'n'Roses) cheesy? Besides having a heck of a singer (sounds like a cross between David Coverdale and Rob Halford), Grim Reaper also wrote some cool guitar riffs. Granted, I've only heard the sound samples on this site, but a lot of the criticism seems misplaced.

    4 out of 5 stars Strong album, but tied to its era..........2005-09-07

    ...actually Grim Reaper hit the scene about 2-3 years late, as glam was already starting its ascendancy and Metallica had just shown the world what America was going to do with all those NWOBHM influences in decline. Nonetheless, Grim Reaper's debut has good raw energy going for it, an overall very dark vibe with simplistic but rocking songs (title track, the thrashy, just-this-side-of-dangerously-evil closer "All Hell Let Loose"), a meandering but decent, low-key ballad ("The Show Must Go On") and good axe work from Nick Bowcott all around. Despite its low-budget sound the debut sold a decent amount and after finding success in England was licensed to RCA, hitting 73 on Billboard Top 100 and selling 250,000 copies before it was all over (according to Bowcott, sales from the 3 albums worldwide was in excess of half a million). So i'd bet more than one older one-star reviewer lurking out there still is still hiding it in their collection. Hey, if it gets lampooned by Beavis & Butthead, it *had* to have had some impact. The Spitfire reissue sounds pretty darn good, sporting remastered sound and liner notes from Nick Bowcott. Without bonus tracks, I feel it prudent to mention the two-fer reissue of "See You In Hell"/"Fear No Evil" might be better Grim Reaper for your dollar value, though I can't compare the sound quality of the first reissue with this one.

    A good metalhead Belgian speed and power metal cd of the mid 80's. I had not really heard of the band until the reissue of 2 in 1 from Mausoleum Records "See you in Hell" and "Second Attack" I think the singer on this album went on to sing with the Belgian band Ostrogoth and Mystery and The German band Affair. Peter De Wint (not the famous painter) vocals are really outstanding on See you in Hell cd. Like all good metal bands things usually change for the worst. I do not think we well here any more in your face metal form Peter. He is preparing a self titled recording under Peter Qin melodic stuff? He tours sometimes with Glenn Hughes. If you are into hard rock keep a eye on him.
    Cross Fire's first appearance was on the compilation Metal Glogs.
    Keep it hard and heavy...............

    Holy crap!!I distinctly remember a neighbor of mine having the 'See You...' release on vinyl when it first came out,in 1984,on the Mausoleum label,mind you.After hearing all eight tracks,I was treated to some great old memories of as to how Crossfire was another one of those under rated/under appreciated metal bands.After experiencing(again) killer tunes like "Demon Of Evil","Magnificent Night","Fly High" and "Starchild",I was also reminded as to how their strong influences were most likely Krokus,Iron Maiden,Helloween,Saxon and Diamond Head.And then there's the bands second lp on this priceless 2-on-1 disc release,'Second Attack',which originally came out in 1985.As I was hearing,for the first time the tunes "Feeling Down","Atomic War" as well as the rest of the group's follow-up,I realized their 2nd lp was JUST as fierce as their 'See You...' metal masterpiece.This is the sort of music that makes you want to stay out late and smash up those mailboxes that stand by the curb.Most highly recommended.
