Sequence Of The Negative Space Changes

Duo Steve Baker and Nick Brackney's follow-up to Stereoscopic floats in dark, sweet waves over the ears. A convergence of guitars, synthesizers, organs, and audiometer, this soft and vaporous music moves through the soul with infinite humming and heavenly whispers. "Sunspot" tickles brightly with melodious guitar, and "Venus" is a lovely, wavering piece of cosmic conversation. "Synapse" might be more aptly titled "Symphony," since it reminds one of an orchestra warming up with splashes of spacy clarinets and violin-like curves. "Sunbeam" inches lushly along with hints of melody tucked between the folds. The liner notes describe this music as "robots singing to themselves," but the various shades of gray melodies and the range of electronic effects tell why this album is much, much more. --Karen Karleski

IF YOU'VE EVER WATCHED MTV, EVEN IT'S JUST FOR HALF AN HOUR, YOU'LL BE FAMILIAR WITH THE CONCEPT OF REPITITION. IT'S A CONCEPT THAT FEATURES STRONGLY IN TOMORROWLAND'S WORK AND THE ALBUM 'SEQUENCE OF THE NEGATIVE SPACE CHANGES' SHOWCASES THE BEAUTY OF PURE SOUND AS IT IS LOVINGLY SHAPED, TWISTED AND MANIPULATED. 'SEQUENCE...' IS ALL ABOUT MINIMAL SOUNDSCAPES AND ATMOSPHERE SO IF YOU WANT CHORUSES AND HOOKS YOU''VE TAKEN A WRONG TURNING BUT TO DISMISS THIS AS MEANINGLESS BACKGROUND MUSIC IS TO MISS THE POINT. IT'S MUSIC THAT REWARDS CLOSE ATTENTION AND THE REPEAT LISTENINGS REVEAL HIDDEN DETAIL AND COLOUR. THE DUO OF NICK BRAKNEY AND STEVE BAKER WHO COMPROMISE TOMORROWLAND MIX THE SYNTHETIC WITH THE NATURAL CREATING SOUNDS THAT APPEAR TO HANG IN THE AIR, TO OCCUPY SPACE AND LOVINGLY STAY THERE FOR THE DURATION OF THE TRACK. THE SOUND IS NETHEIR FORCED OR CONTRIVED BUT STRANGELY HUMAN FOR ALL THE TECHNOLOGY INVOLVED AND THE LACK OF VOCALS. THIS ALBUM HAS BEEN DESCRIBED AS THE SOUND OF ROBOTS SINGING TO EACH OTHER AND THIS DESCRIPTION DOES SUGGEST THE PRECISE, ORDERED STRUCTURE LYING BEHIND THIS MUSIC BUT ALSO THE EMOTION AND FEELING THAT LIES BEHIND THE SOUND AND ITS HUMAN CREATORS. 'SEQUENCE...' DOES NOT POSSES ANYTHING APPROACHING CROSS OVER POTENTIAL AND IT'S NOT GOING TO CONVERT ANYONE BUT THERE IS A TRUE EMOTIONAL WARMTH TO BE FOUND BEHIND THE WASHES OF SOUND IF YOUR WILLING TO LOOK AND MORE IMPORTANTLY LISTEN. MAYBE THAT'S WHY YOU'LL NEVER HEAR THIS ON MTV.
