I have all 3 albums on cassettes and was not able to listen to them. This CD is an excellent idea. I am glad I decided to search for PB CDs. The commentary Mark does for each song is great.

Casual Listiner Loved This CD.......2004-11-02

When I first herd them I thought they where good but I had herd there second album.But them I herd there first.Its great.And Some people may disagree but I say they where hair metal in there early years.Not In Love has a real Whitesnake metal balad feel.And in the video there pulling off a total metal stage act.The drummer spinnin his stix and there's a bit of coreography.I still say there pop metal.Not just pop.And a great band all in all.

Ultra Cheesy 80s Pop Masterpieces.......2003-04-19

Ok everyone, when you see the back cover of this cd you know you are in for an 80s cheese fest. But surprise, surprise, Platinum Blonde is one hell of an underrated band, in the same league as Honeymoon Suite or even Duran Duran, the blondes have made some of the best 80s pop ever. Songs like Situation Critical, Lost In Space and Standing in the Dark are just some of the greats includes on this cd.

So, If you love 80s cheese pop, you are in for a threat, if not beware...I warned you.

WITHOUT A DOUBT, PLATINUM BLONDE AT THEIR PLATINUM BEST.......2001-07-15

This great group from Toronto reminds any follower to be thankful for such considerable R'nR accomplishment (even if it was short-lived). Although many promotional shots taken of this band make them seem like glamour-boy pop icons, one listen to their music proves how wrongly they were portrayed. Any glitter rock or glossy image that found its way to the marketplace was due to the uncompromising sales-pitch techniques of Epic's label company and/or persuasive scheme motives of co-producer Eddy Offord. Hard-synthesized guitar combinations, solid drumming and a lot of true-grit emotion and energy confirms the truth combining this no-frills attached 80's rock dynamo.

Luckily, every song favorite packs itself into this compilation. No need to think, "Well, I'll buy this hit segment until their next `best of` anthology is released to fill any gaps." An all-round better value and group representation than having stacked one on top the other their three preceding album undertakings only filling up space up in your collection. As an option to the reader(s), my suggestion would likewise be (for instance) to put aside some old Loverboy hit's CD release and make room for this superior Canadian group chronology instead...

Blondes United!!.......2001-05-23

While not as gripping as their debut effort, this collection tracks the band through their seven year history. All the essential tracks are here, from gritty to glossy, this collection covers it. Definately a pre-cursor to their latest effort...no.9 I can taste the 80's now!!

Don't Count it Out Yet!.......2005-09-25

When I saw the White Stripes at the Fox Theatre in St. Louis, the show was scorching. It may have been my first real rock concert, but what a way to start the journey! The duo seamlessly went from song to song--in the first half hour, I was convinced that they were trying to fit in every song from their repertoire. And then, after blasting through songs from literally every album (and even some non-album tracks), a familiar beat rang through--"Seven Nation Army." I'd completely forgotten about the song until that moment.

For those who complain that "Seven Nation Army" is trite and (or perhaps "because") it's overplayed, don't blame the Stripes--they are as familiar (and frustrated) with that fact as we are. For the other reviewer who said this should be a triple-A-side single, you're absolutely correct, and the White Stripes will NEVER treat "Seven Nation Army" as more or less of a song than any of their other material. Even though it's the pop-fodder that led them to the mainstream, they always treat every song like the make-or-breaker of the concert.

The single is fantastic, of course. "Black Jack Davey" opens with some of Jack's most soulful guitar work, and "Good to Me" is a thoughtful tribute to Brendan Benson (with whom Jack is releasing an album in not too long--The Raconteurs) and just a blisteringly good song. But to get the full effect of the White Stripes, you MUST listen to all their material, and you MUST at some point in your life, see a live show.

what can i say?.......2005-04-22

This is without question the song that made the white stripes a household name. Seven Nation Army, off of their newest album "Elephant", is the 1st song on the album. It just draws in. The only thing better than getting this single would be just getting the album its off.

Seven Nation Army.......2003-08-17

Perhaps 4 and a half stars would be more appropriate, but Seven Nation Army is easily the single of the year. The title song is growing weary with me, but still has great impact on the listener is terms of raw power. The progression is the same throughout the song, so it can be redundant if you overplay it, so use sparingly and you'll have a new favorite. This single could have feasibly been a double-A side ala The Beatles due to the strengths of Good To Me. Similar to songs like Black Math and Broken Bricks, Good To me is very simple with lyrics penned by an old bandmate. It works perfectly with Seven Nation Army. Alas, the best is saved for last, and I must say this single could have been a TRIPLE A-SIDE because of Black Jack Davey. A very Physical-Graffitish song with a hooky riff and an incredible fill, Davey goes into the pile with Death Letter, Jolene, etc. as classic covers. Overall, Seven Nation Army is as close as The Stripes will likely get to single perfection.

Another killer single from the Stripes.......2003-06-09

One of the many great things about the White Stripes is that they have constanly put out great singles to supplement their albums. This one is no exception. Unlike the previous single for "Dead Leaves..", this one has two new songs not just reworking of previous material. "Good for Me" is a Brendan Benson cover and a fun poppy two minute blast. "Black Jack Davey" is the gem on this one. A Zeppish reworking of the British tradional ballad, Jack's guitarwork is scorching, and Meg drops one of her heavier beats on this baby. Of course this is all topped off by the album track "7 Nation Army" which is quickly becoming one of their classics.

Surprise!.......2003-08-20

After the highly successful release of his first two singles, Stop Living the Lie and Don't Let Go in the first quarter of this year, David Sneddon's debut album hit the stores and I am sure a large number of people were surprised.

Surprised by the VARIETY:

This album contains a wide variety of music styles, from the lyrical celtic-tinged WITHOUT YOU to full-scaled rock numbers such as FOLLOW ME and BEST OF ORDER.

Surprised by the QUALITY:

The singing on this album is also of a varied style. From ballads such as STOP LIVING THE LIE and DON'T LET GO to anthems such as TIME TO FALL DOWN and LONG TIME COMING.

Surprised by the HONESTY:

Unlike many other debut albums, Seven Years Ten Weeks is exactly what it says on the cover - a semi-autobiographical journey through the last seven years and ten weeks of David Sneddon's life. An album written by a musical genius!.......2003-07-02

David Sneddon's debut album Seven Years - Ten Weeks is absolutely fantastic. With 12 of the 13 tracks written by David, enlisting some help with his best friend, guitarist John Kielty and Scott MacAlister, this album takes the listener through the journey Mr Sneddon has made to get where he is today.

Beginning with "Best Of Order", David kick starts the album with a tale of his time playing in Glasgow pubs and clubs, when all he wanted was for people to take note of the performer he is. The chorus is infectious and David makes a great live performance of this. This is the next single, out in August.

The mood of the album changes slightly, with the more mellow "Time To Fall Down", all about trying again and not giving up on your dreams.

Next is the number one single, "Stop Living The Lie" with a twist! This version is much more rockier with a great electric guitar solo at the start. The song finishes off nicely with a clever modulation.

"All My Life" yet again tells the story of how David struggled to get a break in the music business, busking on the streets "Took a little bit of money tried to find my soul, standing on the corner of a street where nobody goes". Lovely piano playing make this song all the more poignant.

"Follow Me" is a great "clap your hands and stamp your feet" anthem. This song is about the wild ride into the music world and how David had to become accustomed to this lifestyle very quickly.

"Don't Let Go", the last single which reached number 3 in the charts is next. This is a great song with a fantastic piano riff, complemented by lovely strings. I feel that this song can have a double meaning - it can be about letting go of a relationship, or letting go of your dreams.

Next up is "The Bluebird", moving onto the rockier side again, and this is followed by David's favourite live track "Lazy".

"O.K" is about trying to prove yourself to the world, and those nasty Fame Academy judges "Doesn't really matter what you say, hit me with your best shot, you know I'm gonna be O.K!" Fabulous!

"Without You" is a sweeping Celtic ballad - soppy lyrics, but the BEST melody! The piano instrumental shows David's great technique and his vocals soar above the instrumentation. Beautiful song.

"Neverland" could be aimed at all these critics, journalists etc. who are ready to shoot anyway who comes into their path. This track has the influence of Robbie Williams as David sings "Neverland, you're stuck in your own private little Neverland, I will never understand, how you ever live with what you do." Well said Mr Sneddon!

"Long Time Coming" is the last album track, written by John Kielty from their time in the band The Martians. Absolutely fantastic song and a great finish to the album.

But wait, there's more! Yep, a hidden track called "I Love You" written for David's girlfriend Eleanor. May not be everyone's cup of tea, but it's a lovely personal touch to a super album.

Honestly, I cannot fault this album, it is outstanding in every sense. David is the new Elton John. His songwriting, piano playing and singing totally outshine many of the acts around today. It's refreshing to see a talent like this and he's a fab live performer. If you haven't seen him yet or listened to this album, you are missing out!

As he says in his album notes "I've been a musician for 7 years. To anyone with half a brain, 10 weeks on a TV show is nothing."

GO LISTEN!!

Superlative Debut Album.......2003-07-02

David Sneddon has proved that he is so much more than a reality tv made popstar - he may instead be the next Elton John!

All but one of these tracks were penned by The Snedmeister himself and what superb songs they are ..... from the wonderful ballads such as Don't Let Go, All My Life, Time to Fall Down, OK, Stop Living the Lie, Long Time Coming (written by John Kielty) and my favourite the soaring, Celtic Without You.

He's also upbeat on Best of Order (the next single release), Follow Me, Neverland and the total feel good track The Bluebird.

I think many people will be very surprised by this album - anyone who thought David was just a "soppy ballad singer" will be very taken aback.

David Sneddon is going to be around for a very long time, he's an extremely talented singer/song writer.

Buy this album - you'll love it!

An eclectic mix.......2003-06-27

David Sneddon promised that his debut album would be a cross between Robbie Williams and David Gray; the kind of comment that's given him the "arrogant" tag, but it does seem as if he's pulled it off, more or less.

The first two singles from 7 Years 10 Weeks, "Stop Living The Lie" and "Don't Let Go" aren't very representative of the rest of Sneddon's music, and are probably the weakest songs on the album. The rest is taken up with an eclectic mix of rock tracks, from the brilliantly energetic "Best of Order" and "Follow Me" to ballads like the haunting "Without You" and the highly personal "All My Life", via dirty rock tracks like "Lazy". The best track is probably "Time To Fall Down", a heartfelt, Beatles-influenced ballad without a hint of boyband wishy-washiness.

If you have their other cds and, like me, simply CANNOT get enough, well, then, YES, you DO need to get this CD. 4 terrific rockers, 1 slow soulful, 1 (maybe)gospel-rock, and 1 that defies description (Insane Asylum has a male vocal until Rachel chimes in as powerfully as usual)

I made a "Best of" cd for my car stereo and picked 5 of these 7; not a bad payoff for the purchase (and then stuck the other 2 songs on at the end, anyway!)

Original? Maybe not very, but high-quality, rootsy rocky R&B doesn't need to be. It just has to be good and sincere. This is.
Only seven songs, but enough variation on the album. And all songs are more than 'okay'.
A short album, but fortunately there's a 'repeat-button'on my CD player.

Oh man! What a trip............2005-09-02

This rather strange collaboration with drugs guru Timothy Leary has been dismissed by some as overly gimmicky and not up to usual Ash Ra Tempel standards. It does, in my humble opinion, still have much to offer though.

Downtown opens the proceedings in funky, bluesy style and shows how this legendary band could effectively traverse genres at the drop of a hat. Power Drive and Right Hand Lover sound like almost conventional pop/rock songs (albeit with most unconventional lyrical themes!) with Gottsching showing he can rock it with the best of 'em when he wants to, before Velvet Genes gives us a more abstract Krautrock-ish intro that soon metamorphoses back into some blues riffs before reprising Downtown. The long track Time, which covered the whole of the second side of the original album, returns to the classic Ash Ra Tempel 'kosmische' sound, reprising the seminal chord-sequence first heard on Schwingungen, but with the Timothy Leary voiceover. As a great example of beautiful, trippy, ambient, hypnotic mood-changing music, I like it. Lots.

This is, perhaps, not the best album to listen to as an introduction to this most mercurial of bands (better to go for Schwingungen, Join Inn or the eponymous first album), but is still a very worthwhile effort and highly recommended.

Oh a journey through "Space" and "Time", how wonderful........2004-07-16

This is Ash Ra Tempel's third CD imported from Germany to the USA. Join on a musical journey through "Space" and "Time" as the New Age group Ash Ra Tempel captures the movements of these two medleys, including the beauty of this timeless recording.

very odd order.......2003-08-01

I don't understand why this compilation is in this order. it would make a lot more sense, and would be a more interesting listen, if the songs were in chronological order. I agree with the other reviewer, there are some strange choices on this album. Even stranger is the total lack of selections from the album "The King" which, in my opinion, is one of the funniest releases in indie rock history. They definately weren't hits, but it's an important part of the bands' history. Also, only one song from "A Catholic Education" is just not fair for the fans. If you're already a fan of Teenage Fanclub then don't bother with this one. Spend the money on "Deep Fried Fanclub" instead.

Wow, a Fannies best of, there's a mouthwatreing prospect.
This album is soooo close to being a 5*, but thanks to e few exclusions (the concept, the cabbage, Kylie's got a crush etc.), and the inclusion of a few dreary new tunes it stays at 4 (though a high 4). Anyone who has or has thought of TFC before HAS to buy this album. Simply the best songs you'll ever hear on one CD (though it's also available in a 2 disk set to allow full track length).
Again, any fan of Big Star, Byrds, Nirvana etc. must by this album. TFC are one of the top 5 bands of the past 10 years, and it's still one of the best albums you'll ever hear, ever. What more do you need to know. BUY IT NOW.

Buy this CD!.......2002-08-30

I bought this album about 2 months ago and have listened to it everyday. I'm a big Anthem fan, I have about 7 or 8 of their cd's, but this one is definitely their best. Even better than Bound to Break. On this one they have a different guitarist & vocalist(ex-EZO, I think). From the opening track it just starts rockin and doesn't stop the whole way through. There are no ballads on this cd. If you are unfamiliar with Anthem, they've been around since about '82. It's straight forward 80's style metal. They sing in Japanese and English in most of their songs. But that doesn't bother you when you're listening to it. You're too busy rockin.

What's with Siouxsie's voice?.......2004-06-23

The big controversy concerning this CD is the quality of Siouxsie Sioux's voice. It sounds different to say the least. It's deeper and she seems to struggle to hit the notes. Was she sick or what?

On the other hand, why would she release this recording if she wasn't happy with the results? I think you can make the case that her voice sounds creepy and compliments the dark subject matter of most of these songs. Rock n' Roll isn't always about being pretty, after all.

The band sounds AWESOME and former Psychedelic Fur Knox Chandler fits right in, providing a gorgeously gothic guitar. But in all HONESTY, I'll be sticking with the original recordings that feature the Siouxsie voice I know and love.

Let me first say that I am a MAJOR Siouxsie & The Banshees fan, and have been for many, many years. I didn't add this uncharacteristically awful album to my iTunes collection of the entire Siouxsie & the Banshees catalog, because the out-of-tune singing is unbearable. I can only wonder what Siouxsie herself thinks of this album. Maybe the monitors on stage were not supporting her the way she needed, but she very rarely comes close to hitting a note during the entire show. The band sounds a bit thin, with only Budgie turning in a performance that could be considered memorable. But the singing... ugh.

Well maybe you've missed what's most wonderful about her.

Remember first that the Banshees happened in the years of do-it-yourself music-making of the late 1970s. The point then wasn't to craft a polished presentation, but to figure out a few chords on the guitar and say what was on your mind. When it worked best, it was because a band had a point of view that resonated with the rest of us.

Over time, the Banshees' experiments with the technical requirements for presenting that point of view began to describe a truly new style. The rich layers of sound they created in the studio grew naturally out of the world view of their music and lyrics. But different media allow - or require - different means to communicate the thought and emotion at the heart of a work. If the recording studio lends itself to a careful assemblage of those baroque layers of sound, the stage offers an immediacy and connection with an audience that more than compensates for any lack of technical expertise.

Sioux doesn't sing pretty. She often can't hit a note with one strike. So she slides around it, sometimes missing it completely. But each pass of her voice conveys more art than all of Broadway's bland precision could muster in an entire season. Like other great chanteuses, when the technical accuracy of her voice fails her, she finds other ways to get to where she needs to be. She's a stylist and, in that regard, has more in common with Marlene Dietrich than with Doris Day. Now, would you rather listen to a personal and emotional expression in song or a marching band?

This album is noticeably devoid of most of the band's hits. It's a look back at their twenty-year career and gives us some perspective on how they got to this place.

Hearing the early tunes refracted through the prism of Sioux's more mature voice, we are transported. The sharp edges of those post-Punk endeavors sound more chipped and craggy now; they evoke the whole world of emotion and experience that has passed through her in the years between, waiting tightly coiled in the spaces and unfurling like a sea anemone as she slips her voice over each rough spot.

It's a great collection and includes the wonderful "Lullaby." This expression of tenderness for the innocent caught in a world rife with pain and desolation brings tears to my eyes each time I hear it.

Oh yeah, and the band sounds wonderful, too.

If you're a fan or you just want to know what all the fuss is about, buy this album. It's an important piece of performance. If you want a pretty voice, get a Sarah McLachlan disc.

This is real bad..........2003-07-08

I have followed this band from my teens to my adulthood, and have seen them at least a dozen times-they are my heros! Unfortunately, I have to give this one star-I am sorry but Siouxsies' voice is absolutely cringe-inducing, I saw this tour 3 times in 2002, and her voice was the same too. I kept hopeing it would get better-but it didn't. I am really surprised they put this out. Sioux is so off key, her range is shot-and the band isn't that great either. It's a shame; but hey-they do have some AMAZING studio albums!

Siouxsie still thrills!.......2003-06-04

Seven years apart has had little effect on Siouxsie and the Banshees. Her followers were out in full force on last years 7 year itch tour and judging from her cheering fans Siouxsie still has the ability to thrill. Their music seems even more relevant today considering most of the garbage on the radio these days. Siouxsie's voice is as icy and hoarse as ever from years of touring but we wouldn't have it any other way - her voice has always been part of their appeal. Listening to old screamfests like "Pure", "Voodoo Dolly" and "Monitor" sounds just as good as they did 20 years ago. Budgies drumming is excellent especially on "Land's End". Strangely enough, some of their biggest hits from the concerts like "Christine", "Happy House" and "Cities in Dust" are not included on this CD.
