Between 1925 and 1929, Louis Armstrong created one of the first great bodies of work in jazz. While he worked regularly as a soloist with big bands, he began his career as a leader with the first all-star studio group in jazz, the Hot Five. The other four musicians were Armstrong's wife, Lil Hardin Armstrong, on piano; Johnny Dodds on clarinet; Kid Ory on trombone; and Johnny St. Cyr on banjo. The music's first great soloist, Armstrong was reshaping jazz by sheer improvisational magic, gradually diminishing the role of the traditional New Orleans ensemble with the clarion brilliance of his trumpet. Possessing an uncanny blend of exuberance and creativity, he combined virtuosic declarations with a talent for the subtlest shifts in phrasing and melodic variation, creating rich emotional statements that could hint at loss in the midst of joy or the promise of better things in the most sorrowful blues. The band expands here, to the Hot Seven and larger ensembles, and it gains soloists who applied Armstrong's lessons to their own instruments--musicians such as pianist Earl Hines and trombonist Jack Teagarden--but all come under the imprint of Armstrong's flowering genius, as both trumpeter and singer.
It's almost impossible to overrate this material. It may be the most influential music in jazz history, establishing standards for originality and sustained invention that have rarely been matched. The JSP set is a superb reissue of Armstrong's essential work. The remastering is by John R.T. Davies, widely acknowledged as the dean of engineers in the field of early jazz, and the resultant sound is simply the best this work has ever enjoyed. There are alternate takes of the later material on Columbia Legacy (including Louis in New York and St. Louis Blues), so collectors will want both. But this recording is superior listening, at a price that also makes it an ideal introduction to one of the few titans of jazz. --Stuart Broomer
Customer Reviews:
Hot, indeed!.......2007-04-09
For anyone with even the slightest interest in Jazz, prewar American music, or, for that matter, reorded sound, this box set is a godsend: It's a four-disc collection of just about every recording made by Louis Armstrong between the years of 1925 and 1929- and it costs less than 30 bucks! The songs have been remastered to near perfection- considering that these recordings were made during the Coolidge administration, the sound quality is surprisingly crisp, clear, and sharp as a brand new Zoot Suit. Don't worry, though: The visionaries at JSP have left in just enough background hiss to maintain that glorious Roaring Twenties feel.
Of course, I don't need to tell you how great the music is. It's been written about in all of them fancy music publications, and praised quite wonderfully by the other reivewers here on Amazon. Still, I'd like to join in the general roar of applause by pointing out how awesome these recordings are- they're wild, exuberant, free, and passionate. Each track offers layer upon layer of swirling horns, pounding pianos, chugging banjos, and general toe-tapping frenzy. Instrumental solos spin off in fantastic directions, while ensamble sections are dizzying, glorious, and downright propulsive. The whole thing is enough to make you hearken back to that era of freewheelin' flappers, scandalous speakesies, and the bountiful opportunities for investment in Florida land.
If you give even a fifth of a hoot about 20th century music, get this album right now!!!
Don't touch the hiss!.......2007-03-10
If it was just the music I'm rating, it would of course get a million stars. However, the music is on a remastered CD. "Remastered" generally means getting your oldie jazz sounding as if it's being strangled in a can.
Granted the sound here is "clear" and the bass is a bit boosted. The acoustics, reverb, echo, life and air are however thrown out with the hiss.
Again, I've heard a lot worse than this. But generally, French jazz re-issues are better. Why? Because they leave the hiss!! The catch? The French CD's are either expensive or they contain fewer songs for your money than these cheapo boxed sets.
Music is cornerstone...but the sonics? Mixed feelings........2007-02-09
I'm not going to labor on the fact that this music is fantastic, cornerstone of jazz, indispensible, blah, blah, blah. We all already know that. I want to talk about the sonic quality of these recordings.
I read so much about this John RT Davies guy, who mastered this box set. I heard so many positive things about his skills, particularly in this boxed set, and how the sound is allegedly far superior to the Columbia version. I had to get BOTH to compare. I bought this JSP box set, and the newly revised 2006 edition of the Hot sessions released by Columbia/Legacy/Sony/BMG (the official edition).
The late John RT Davies, who mastered this JSP set is considered so good, that people on Amazon claimed that he mastered this collection from old 78s better than the engineers at Columbia, using the original masters (owned EXCLUSIVELY by Columbia.) Heck, RCA & Columbia thought he was good, as i've seen his name adorning very LEGAL pressings of all sorts of old jazz under the RCA & Columbia labels, right here in the U.S.A. So, he certainly had some clout, and some talent.
Unlike almost every reviewer on here, i do not consider the JSP box set to sound better than the official Columbia release (2006 version). However, i still think it sounds pretty good. There is something important to consider. While Davies is considered a true master at...well, remastering, his work at JSP comes up flawed, because he did not have access to the original masters, which are safely secured in Sony/Columbia/Legacy's vaults. He had to use old 78's (the kind you bought in the store) to make these new masters. So, while he may have picked 78's that were better preserved, and had seen less action, he was still using the next generation of recordings.
When you master from the originals over and over and over again, you tend to add all kinds of artificial pops, clicks, hisses, and such into the original disc (Bing Crosby had to re-record White Christmas in 1947, because the original 1942 recording was pressed so many times, it sounded horrible). Therefore, if you use a pretty clean 78, you can avoid much of that, and come out with a cleaner master to make into a CD. When you add some digital noise removal systems (essentially computer programs), you make them even cleaner, and if done right, still not sacrifice the integrity of the music.
Sounds pretty cut and dry right? The 78's should sound better then, right? Why wouldn't Columbia re-master their collection from old 78's as well? A very important reason, actually. When you copy old 78's, instead of the original pressings, you move at least one generation away from the original performance. Everytime you make a copy of a copy, the sound gets muddier, with less distinction and more distortion. Certainly, with skill and technology, it can be minimalized, but the fact remains.
Soooooooo.......my analysis? The JSP set sounds a tad smoother, with less pops. The bass is a little deeper too, however a bit muddier (slightly distorted). The Columbia set from 2006 DOES have a bit more scratchiness, and the bass is not quite as deep. However, the sound is CLEANER, and...my favorite descriptive word in this whole review...more TRANSPARENT. That's right. Every instrument in the Columbia set is more distinct from all the other instruments. The sound feels light, airy, and alive. The JSP set, while more smooth doesn't have that clarity of the original recordings. They sound more like...well, records.
So, which is better? There's no really correct answer. It's a matter of taste. For ME, the Columbia set wins, hands down. I'm 31 years old. For most of my musical life, i grew up listening to CDs. However, many people have fond memories of what their old collection of vintage records sound like. What you hear on records that you don't hear on CD's is distortion. It's slight, but it's certainly there. Technically, CDs are cleaner, and more accurate representations of the actual music than records ever were. But people have aural memories, and THAT'S the sound they want to hear. It's a very natural, and totally unconscious reaction. We like what we know. Everytime i buy better speakers, amps, etc., i always miss the sound of my old, inferior equipment...for a little while. Then as i use it, my ears adjust to the new sound, and i ADORE it. Anytime i've tried going back to the OLD set-up after that, i had a much stronger negative reaction than i did when going UP in quality. My ears became adjusted to what's better.
So, here's my recommendation:
If you don't have those fond memories of old vinyl or shellac discs, and grew up on CDs, then the Columbia set is 150% better. The sound is cleaner, tighter, more distinct instrumentally, and contains less distortion. You get music that's closer to reality. The drawback of course, is you will hear a bit more crackle, and a tad less bass.
If you DO have those fond memories of the big black discs, and you remember the warm, rounded sound that made you feel like cuddling up in a blanket with a cup of cocoa & a wish on a star, then you really need to get this set. If you also happen to listen to rap in your Escalade, and you like to hear the bass completely distorting, but you think you wanna try some early Satchmo, then you NEED this set. Don't even think about buying the Columbia version. Just remember, while it is smoother, it is also further away from the original performance, so the sound is muddier and less distinct.
I've compared nearly every track on both sets. They both sound pretty good in their own ways. By all means, this IS a set worth owning...for some people. You just have to decide what kind of person you are.
The Definitive Hot Fives & Sevens: Just Perfect!.......2006-12-23
When Louis Armstrong's "Hot Five & Sevens" first came out on CD, I did not hesitate to jump up and purchase these magnificent CD'S. Yes, they were crude and did not have that clear sound that this JSP issue had, but I was so enamored with Armstrong's early greatness, that I jumped up and purchased them. I don't regret it, even if the sound was nowhere near these great recordings. However, after I purchased this boxed set of Armstrong's classic "Hot Fives & Sevens," I never listened to them again. I gave them to a friend who was interested in jazz, but not really sure he liked early jazz. This boxed collection is what I now listen to. There is nothing more I can add as to how GREAT the sound quality is on these terrific recordings. They are just awesome.
I listened to this music when I was a kid, courtesy of my parents, but I never really appreciated just how great Louis Armstrong was until I became an adult. I liked him, but now I love his sound. And as for the earlier issues on CD of this outstanding work by Armstrong, well this is the set to have. I recommend that if you are seeking the best issue out there of the "Hot Fives & Sevens," then purchase this boxed set. It it far superior to any other I have ever heard. There have been some great reviews on this particular CD, and I really don't think there is anything more I can add. However, do youself a favor and listen to these remarkable recordings. They are a must have not only if you are into jazz, but if you like beautiful music period. I like ALL types of music. There are very few genre's of music I do not like, or can listen to. However, I have a special place in my heart [and ears] for music in the 1920s and early 1930s. And this IS music! Highly recommended!
Brilliant!.......2006-12-17
Louis Armstrong and his "Hot Five and Seven" are just brilliant! I resisted buying this set of CDs for years because I felt the quality of music recorded in the 20s was very low. Of course, a jazz collection without these recordings is like the Sistine Chapel without Michelangelo's frescos. JSP Records did a marvelous job of digitally remastering these inspired recordings...no scratching or popping and very little hissing. I can add little to what has already been said about these very reasonably priced discs.

"Are you ready for reggae in its entirety?" Culture frontman Joseph Hill is wont to challenge audiences. Ready or not, Culture's been hurling lightning-'n'-thunder reggae prophesy--live and on numerous classic sets--for nearly three decades. The most feverish of the act's consistently inspired output has to be the apocalyptic Two Sevens Clash, which includes the close-second warrior anthems "I'm Not Ashamed" and "See Them a Come." No matter that 1977 came and went without a ripple; it's all Hill's--a mesmerizing preacher-teacher who's still singing at the crossroads where Rastaman gospel meets Hendrix's acid communion. --Elena Oumano

REVIEW OF TWO SEVENS CLASH.......2007-05-14
I was very happy with the titles on this CD but I was not happy with the quality of the CD. I was not able to play this CD on my car's CD player.
I get the impression that this CD was burned and not an original.
4 1/2 stars. a reggae classic........2007-03-30
all fans of reggae need this album. an absolutely great piece of work. fantastic melodies, rhythms, and harmonies. sheer joy radiates from the performances. this is music with a big heart and soul. "i'm alone in the wilderness," baby. yes i am. this is stirring stuff to lift one up. a great place to introduce yourself to reggae if you haven't gone there yet. and a must for any reggae collection.
An Absolute Classic.......2006-09-22
This album may not reach you at first, but beware after a dozen listens you will be totally mesmerised. This simmering, hynotic music blended with Hill's old testament preaching/singing style blended with the slightly off-kilter harmonies will get you. Virtually every track is a classic not just of its genre but of music in its entirity. Anyone used to bland chart music and trite love songs, this is not for you. Nearly every track is shimmering with a deep sprirituality, that I guarantee will seep deep inside you, all the more so with truly joyous music that accompanies it. Truly listen and wonder.
Shuck, jive, bump and slide to crucial roots.......2006-07-04
Shake, shimmy and dance 'pon de river to one of the best roots reggae releases ever!
Culture -- who I am proud to say I have seen live, even here in Delaware! -- had their best album with "Two Sevens Clash."
Religious Rasta prophecy is sprinkled all throughout the disc, from the plaintive strains of "Calling Rastafari" to the sycnopated bump of "See Them a Come"
Throughout the entire disc, the music is constantly bubbling with bass hits and conga thumps, creating a shimmying, liquid backdrop for the group's sliiiiightly off-kilter harmonies.
It all adds up to a brief-but-strong set that should be in any discriminate reggae lover's collection.
One of the best..........2006-02-24
Two Sevens Clash, is quite simply one of the most revealing, well played and enjoyable Reggae albums ever made. Culture continue, to this day, to tour and sell out venues on a world wide basis, their voices and harmonies are still strong and the band is so very good all round, I recommend this album to anyone.

Garth's best album in years is also--no coincidence-- his most country record since his debut. The opening "Longneck Bottle," in fact, may be the most country single he's ever recorded, a swingy ode to the temptations of tall cold ones, all to the soundtrack of a steel guitar. Nothing else here is as strong, but the pathetic characters in weepers like "She's Gonna Make It" and "I Don't Have to Wonder" come plenty close. Moreover, "Belleau Woods," a lovely Christmas ballad with a World War II setting, puts Garth's patented earnestness to good use. --David Cantwell
Customer Reviews:
Pretty Good Garth.......2005-09-22
This is not my favorite Garth album but it is still pretty good. Nothing Garth does (in the country music world, that is) is ever really bad. Some of the songs are a bit cheesy but some are really good. My favorite is "Belleau Wood", and as a history major I appreciate the significance of it. But would someone please tell David Cantwell (Amazon reviewer) and all the other websites that copied and pasted his review that the Battle of Belleau Wood/The Christmas Truce of Belleau Wood happened in the FIRST World War, not the second. It was a real standout moment in the War and this song does a lot to commemorate it.
Another bold and outstanding Garth album........2005-05-31
Even though, some argue that Sevens didin't reflect much of Garth's personality, This is another Garth Album with very bold songs, in my opinion. Like The Chase, which was said to have been his most bold album with his most serious songs. I believe this album is the same idea, only maybe even more bold with some of the most powerful and inspirational songs. Garth said himself that this was a very personal album. Here are some of my favorites. How You Ever Gonna Know, a purely inspirational song to motivate yourself to have courage and go out and try something new, even if it is really risky and uncomfortable, because if you never try, you'll never know how it feels to do something like flying. Fit For a King, one of Garth's most powerful and bold songs, about a homeless preacher, who despite haing no home, his appearance and his weak condition, he bleives and preaches that his torn rags will be fit for a king someday in heaven. My favorite is Do What You Gotta Do, it doesn't motivate you to try something scary like How You Ever Gonna Know, it keeps you moving on in your hardest times of life, and tells you that you have the truth in life and you can't let anything anyone says get to you, if you wanna be a hero or make a diference, and that you have the power in yourself to make it through life and reach your dreams. It has some echos of Standing Outside The Fire, with fire being used as a metaphor for standing for what you beleive in. There's the duet with Shania Twain, In Another's Eyes, When There's No One Aroud, a beautiful song about his imaginary friends and self-images, and his imagination in the middle of the night when he's alone. A Friend to me, another good song, either about a friend he had growing up, or about his wife, I'm not sure. The last is Belleau Wood, a Christmas Ballad, set in Germany during World War II, a song aobut tolerance, where he says that heaven isn't beyond the clouds, it's just beyond the fear, when he could die if he was worng. Every other song on this album I like, there's probably not any Garth song I don't like, he sings and writes songs like no other country artist.
One of the best albums ever put out by ANYONE!.......2005-01-03
Garth Brooks is one of music's greatest. He most certainly is my favourite singer and entertainer in the music business. For almost three decades Brooks has enjoyed a career in music, that saw him eventually get his record deal with EMI's Capitol Records division in 1989. His debut album "Garth Brooks" rose to the top of the charts and follow-up album's "No Fences" and "Ropin' The Wind" cemented his success both commercially and musically.
Between his debut and this set there had been a total of 9 albums to his credit. His previous studio album had been "Fresh Horses" and although it had done very well, critics were beginning to claim Brooks was washed up and running out of ideas. This album is proof, if any was needed, that they were wrong.
The album starts with "Longneck Bottle" (a track written by Brooks' friend and fellow Country singer Steve Warierner), a hard hitting Country song with a humours streak about whether to say in the bar or go home ("Longneck Bottle let go of my hand/Jukebox don't play that song again/I got a girl at home that loves me/She won't understand"). This was the 1st single off the set and the one that was played on radio stations the world over before the album was put out.
It was immediately followed by "How you ever gonna know?", this has to be my favourite track on the CD, Brooks' deliverance of powerful lyrics has always been one of his many greatest assets as a performer and this song puts that gift to good use ("How you ever gonna know/What it's like to be there/How you ever gonna know/How it feels to fly/How you ever gonna know?/ If you never dare to try) the song also features the somewhat tongue in cheek lyric "Listen no to the critics who put there own dreams on the shelf/If you wanna get the truth to admit it you gotta find out for yourself" no whilst this fits in perfectly with the rest of the song, one can't help but wonder if Garth was talking about the music critics who were claming his career was coming to a close.
The next two songs "Shes Gonna Make It" and "I don't have to wonder" are about loves turned bad, in "Gonna Make It" the song is about a man who wants to get back with his wife ("The crazy thing about it, is she'd take him back, but the fool in him that walked out, is the fool that just won't ask") while "Don't Have To Wonder" is about a man who sees his ex-lover marry someone else and end's up killing himself in the last verse.
It's probably a good thing the next song is "Two Pina Colladas" which is another tale of love turned bad, but rather than killing himself, this time Brooks just goes out and get's drunk. Probably a much better alternative.
"Cowboy Cadalac" echo's Brooks' classic 1994 rocking country hit "Ain't Going Down ('Til The Sun Comes Up)", while "Fit for a king" takes us to the beliefs of Christianity and is from a poor mans point of view. "Do what you gotta do" also echo's the message from a previous Brooks' hit "Standing Outside the fire", with it's never give up on your dreams message.
"You Move Me", on the other hand is a tender love ballad, that shows Brooks talents off wonderfully.
"In Anothers Eyes", another ballad, is a duet with Trisha Yearwood, whilst "When there's noone around" is a song about being your own best friend (This is a glimpse of a child that's within/He's so immature but he's still my best friend.. he's the kid that I am when there's no one around"), meanwhile "Friend to me" is a tribute to best friends, even when they can be the most annoying person in the world ("Times i'd rather kill you than listen to your "honesty"/But you've always been a friend to me").
Brooks then treats us to a fine rocker "Take The Keys To My Heart" (great lyrics in this one, he compares his heart to a car and then says "Fill 'Er Up").
I mentioned that "How you ever gonan know?" was my favorte track on this CD , but the final cut "Bellau Wood" has got to be a close 2nd (Interestingly this is Garths favourite cut on this album, followed by "How you ever.."). "Bellau Wood" is a beautiful song about a Christmas truce being declared by the American and German soldiers during the war.
It is a fitting ending to the "Sevens" album, an album of wonderful lyrics, wonderful musicians and one of the greatest singers of all-time taking the lead.
If you're a major Garth fan they you should already own this. If you are big or casual fan you might not. If not I can highly recommend it and if you don't own a Garth album, this is a good an introduction to his talent than "No Fences" or "Ropin' The Wind" (plus you get more bang for your back, 14 great songs on 1 CD!).
This is Garth Brooks, the singer of songs, showcased at his best.
GARTH YOU'RE THE BOMB!.......2004-05-10
As a relatively new country fan from Australia Garth is and always will be one of my person favourites. This CD shows his talent, weather it be ballads or a fun song such as longneck bottle.
Longneck bottle: this is a fun, catchy tune, it feels like you're right there with him!
How you ever gonna know: This is a great song, telling you to get out there, youll never know if you never try!
She's gonna make it: a song about a girl and a guy. The girls gonna make it.
I dont have to wonder: a song about a man not wanting to marry a woman anymore. Some verses give me goosebumps...
2 pina coladias: this is another fun song!
Cowboy cadillac: its about a car but its sung as if its a woman.
The rest of the songs youll have to listen to find out but if you're a big fan of garth you're gonna be a big fan of this.
SEVENS! GET IT!
Balleu wood is my fave song by far. t gives me goosebumps just thinking about it
sevens up.......2004-02-19
Well this is the album for garth because garth is the best artist in the whole world with putting words into a song and that is what makes the song and garth brooks so powerful. There is not one song on this album that will not put a tear in your eye or make you think about someone or something. No matter what this album is sevens up.ps i would like to dedicate the song A FRIEND TO ME to my best friend steve ashmore who died in a car crash two weeks ago.steve if you can here me i love you man.

This collection bulges with the hottest and most dazzling jazz of the 1920s, with Armstrong dragging his lesser colleagues along with him in a whirlwind of inspiration. How a young man from the rugged and unbending background of downtown New Orleans could learn to play such sophisticated, sure-footed magic will never be known. He pops up to astonish on the 1926 tracks with classic ideas already spouting from his horn. Over the next three years, he would metamorphose into the sublime creator of the trumpet solo on the last track, "Tight Like This," one of the most dramatic and enchanting solos in the whole of jazz. Before that are fresh-as-a-daisy cornet acrobatics, as found on "Potato Head Blues" and "Struttin' with Some Barbecue." There's more exquisite playing on "Savoy Blues," where Lonnie Johnson adds some eloquent guitar. And then there's "West End Blues," the trumpet classic par excellence that brings in pianist Earl Hines, already a decade ahead of his time and one of the most potent influences on Armstrong. This is a thoroughly enjoyable history lesson. --Steve Voce

Timeless and Priceless.......2006-08-19
This collection of 25 performances by Louis Armstrong and his Hot Fives, Hot Sevens, and other bands is as timeless as it is priceless. These early (1926-1928) recordings reveal Armstrong's genius in creating dixieland jazz as an art form. The gem of the collection is his profoundly moving 1928 performance of "West End Blues," which alone is worth the cost of the CD. But the other performances are equally astonishing for their creativity and verve. Sound quality is exceptionally good. Here are 75 minutes of the greatest jazz music you'll ever hear.
First Louis Amstrong CD.......2006-03-04
If you are going to buy only one CD from Amstrong, this is the one I suggest.
The best Satchmo era.......2005-08-21
A complete selection of the best era of Louis (The hot five and the hot Seven ensembles). Memorable songs are included here: "Cornet chop suey", "Willy the weeper", "Potato head blues", and "Weary blues". The price is even better than the box set.
The one to get if you can't spring for one of the boxes!.......2001-03-29
If you're looking for the best single-disc collection of this incredible legacy, you've come to the right place. Everyone with even a slight interest in jazz (oh heck, make that EVERYONE, period!) needs to hear this music in some form!
But for many people, four discs may be overkill. This collection includes virtually all the mega-classics - Heebie Jeebies, Ski-Dat-Di-Dat, Mustrat Ramble, Struttin' With Some Barbecue, Potato Head Blues, Big Butter and Egg Man, Weather Bird, West End Blues, St. James Infrimary, the UTTERLY AMAZING Tight Like This, and more - and should make nearly anyone into a convert!
As for me, I already have the old 3-LP Columbia set (36 cuts), and there's very little from those that aren't on here that I miss (e.g., That's When I'll Come Back To You). And the convenience of having it on CD is well worth any duplications. The sound quality (given the original 20s recordings) and liner notes are excellent. This is an essential CD... unless you just decide to go whole hog and get one of the box sets!
"And I say IT IS tight like this!"
Jazz Immortality!.......2001-01-12
Louis Armstrong's Hot Five and Hot Seven recordings have become immortal in the history of jazz. If you can't afford the complete boxed sets, this is the best collection to own. It will get you started and wet your appetite for more this man's groundbreaking genius. "West End Blues" alone is worth the price of this disc. No "best of" collection is really that without this renowned masterpiece. "Weather Bird" (also composed by his old boss King Oliver) can blow you away. And that's just to mention two of the cuts. This is the man who created much of the very vocabulary of jazz, and no one has ever said it better.

This a great CD from begining to end!.......2007-04-06
My two favorites on this CD are "ON THE WANE" and SISTER NIGHTFALL" the whole CD is nicely arranged with a slight mainstream metal sound;that is until Morten's metal growls, which contast with Fabienne beautiful voice.I like her much more than their new singer. This might be the best or at least one of the best of this style of metal.
Beyond the Veil = At Sixes and Sevens.......2006-11-29
I have a bit of a soft spot for this album. Does it deserve a 5? Maybe in reality its a 4.5. But Ever since Widow's Weeds ive been a near raving fan of anything created by this mastermind. If you like older Tristania, you'll love this. Thats about all I can say about it. Happy listening!
"I concede your pain is nonpareil".......2006-03-29
nonpareil: having no equal, peerless
4.5 stars. This is the album fans of early Tristania knew Morten Veland could make if his bit and bridle were removed and he were allowed to run free through the Gothic countryside. This album is essentially a purging of his ambitions without constraint. The result is an often breathtaking ride mixed with Gothic choirs, lush orchestral arrangements, snarling and clean vocals (both male and female), Black Metal blastbeats, and even the occasional ode to 1980s New Wave pop. This concoction may sound a bit strange but Morten Veland shows he is a talented alchemist, particularly with arrangements and production value, where many different instruments and vocal styles interweave to create a tapestry of exciting soundscapes. The only times that make me feel impatient are when the instrumentation dwindles to a simple guitar riff, uncomplicated drums keeping time, and maybe a wash of keyboards as background atmosphere. These moments do not last long, however, and are mere blemishes on an otherwise seemless release. "Meridian" is an excellent example, as the beginning starts off fairly uninspired, but soon accelerates into Black Metal blastbeats reminiscent of Old Man's Child. The 1980's New Wave influence is virtually everywhere but only becomes glarlingly noticeable during the slower parts of songs where the minimalistic keyboards and bass drive the song. The production on this album is superb, and more often than not, so is the songwriting. All the songs on this album are laced with a variety of instruments and vocal styles, all arranged with intelligence and care. This album is easy to recommend.
SIRENIA THE BEST GOTH BAND?'.......2005-12-22
One of the best gothic bands, if you like stuff like TRISTANIA, NIGHTWISH, WITHIN TEMPTATION, THETRE OF TRAGEDY AND OTHER BANDS WITH FEMALE VOCALS, THIS IS FOR YOU. Beautiful fem. voice and powerful strong music background.
At Sixes and Sevens.......2005-10-25
This is, in my opinion, the best metal album ever created. Everything in it is perfectly done, from Fabienne's vocals to the choirs, from the superb drumming (which to me sounds humanly impossible to play) to skilled guitar and violin parts, from the songwriting to the production.
This album picks up where Morten left off with Tristania, so if you enjoyed the first two Tristania albums, you will probably like this.

Truly A Masterpiece.......2004-10-27
A great live album, containing some of the best old 77s material compiled into one jam CD. This album is garage/blues rock at its finest. Songs like 'I Can't Get Over It' and 'The Lust the Flesh the Eyes and the Pride of Life' make my top playlist still. For a CD made in a chaotic time in 77s history (just after the collapse of Island Records), they hold their own very well. With three 12 minute jam songs, 77 minutes of tightly packed material, and lots of shredding guitar solos, 88 is truly a masterpiece.
INCREDIBLY COOL-ONE OF THE ALLTIME BEST LIVE ALBUMS EVER!.......2004-08-20
I had known of the Seventy Sevens since my dad met Mike Roe while mastering his album at Ralph Stover's studio. He told me they were a prog band, and finding their EP and Mike Roe's 7&7iS album at a flea market confirmed this. A few months later, at the same flea market, i found 88. I had no idea the 77's were a blues band, and was surprised by their fantastic guitar work on the album-because their EP lacks complex lead guitar work. All in all, a five star album.
Completely Brilliant!!.......2001-08-10
This is, perhaps, the greatest live recording ever from one of the greatest, most underated bands in the world. Ever since I saw them live in the early 90's, I have been a 77's fanatic. Words cannot describe their musical genius and unique sound. To listen to "Mercy Mercy" alone is worth the price of this CD. The way they intertwine the classics of rock into their own tunes (live) is a joy to hear. The first time you experience it is remarkable. If only I could go back and hear this disc again for the first time and rediscover it's magic. Get this...and all the other discs by this band before they aren't available anymore. Pay any price. It's worth it.
The best band you've never heard.......2001-05-08
This is one of the best live recordings available by any band in any genre. "Roadhouse blues" serves as a good general description of the music on "88", but it's infinitely more than that. The Seventy Sevens start from a blues foundation that blossoms into catchy, captivating tunes performed with the kind of passion, integrity and virtuosity that makes one ask, "How come they never hit it big?" "88" will knock your sox off. Buy it!
The Sevens let loose with this one..........2000-03-30
I have all the 77's' releases, and I've seen them twice in concert already. This album captures the spirit of their live performances. Mike Roe and company do a spectacular job with all the tracks on this one, especially "Mercy Mercy" (a whopping 11 minutes long!). This is live blues-rock at its finest! I can't wait for their next release!

outstanding!.......2006-12-26
The 77's are one of the most amazingly talented bands out there. Too bad most people don't know it. "Pray Naked" is a masterpiece. Each song is thoughtfully written, musically as well as lyrically. "The Rain Kept Falling in Love" is one of my favorites, as well as "Look". No matter what kind of music you like, fast or slow or in between, this CD has it. Mike Roe is simply amazing, as is the A-Train (Aaron Smith) on the drums. Buy this, you will NOT be disappointed.
Tip: If you can find "Sticks and Stones", that album is even better than this one, using an excellent mix of their classics and rarer finds. "Do It For Love" (one of my favorites) is one of their original recordings.
5 stars for a reason..........2005-11-10
This band is really one of the best 50 bands to ever walk the planet. It's wild to realize how utterly great this band is, and yet how relatively unknown they are (still). "Pray Naked" could be their best release. Michael Roe's "The Boat Ashore" is still my all-time fave but technically it's not 77's. If you like great rock with variety and spontaneity as well as a unique lively studio quality, you're gonna like it. Buy it especially if you find it cheap.
An emotional rollercoaster.......2002-04-20
If you like music and lyrics to actually work together to paint a picture with emotional heft, this CD belongs in your collection. It contains some of the most bombastic rock and roll side by side with some of the most heartwrenching ballads I've ever heard. Musically, the CD has a light, summery feel. Lyrically, it's some of the most introspective you'll hear.
If you're a closet softie when it comes to tear jerker ballads, "Kites Without Strings" is by far one of the saddest songs I've ever heard--without one bit of saccharine sweetness. It just flat out crushes you with its closing refrain, "Now you're gone, you're gone." If the written lyric doesn't pack a wallop for you, listening to Michael Roe's haunted vocal will.
"Pray Naked" is one of the craziest jam sessions I've ever heard, covering acres of musical ground while clocking in at almost 8 minutes.
The closer, "Self-made Trap," is often my theme song when it comes to regarding the state I'm in (of being, not residence): "The warden comes to set me free / I grip the bars, swallow the key / It's like serving time when there's none left / On a fast train nowhere but we're not there yet / The scenery moves, the train stands still."
At times raucous, at times contemplative, it's always powerful.
If you can find it, get it!.......2001-08-12
This album contains lots of 77's classics: Do It For Love (brings back memories of Cornerstone Festival), The Lust The Flesh The Eyes, and a rare acoustical track, I Could Laugh. Very cool...
Their best studio album.......2001-05-08
This record is the Roe/Leonhardt/Harmon/Smith incarnation's best studio effort and highlights the bands main strength. Very few bands can rock out the way The Seventy Sevens do while also delivering flat out beautiful pop songs. You get that message loud and clear in the first two selections, the Led Zeppelinesque "Woody" followed by the homage to the Beach Boys, "Smile". And it just keeps getting better from there. Granted, Roe doesn't always find the bright side of things in his subject matter, but that's a minor criticism. This record is an overlooked gem.

Real Rock & Roll.......2006-08-29
How a bunch of former punk rockers ends up in the middle of the Hollywood hair metal scene playing Southern-influenced barroom rock is anybody's guess, but that's exactly what the guys in Junkyard did. Amidst a sea of hairspray and power ballads, Junkyard served up bluesy hard rock with a Southern vibe and plenty of swagger, and their debut album turned out to be a pretty big hit.
For their 1991 album Sixes, Sevens and Nines, Junkyard continued to deliver the kind of alcohol-fueled straightforward hard rock that you'd expect to hear playing at your favorite local bar. These are real, gimmick-free rock & roll songs that hold up surprisingly well 15 years later.
Hair metal? Southern rock? Forget about labels. If you like good rock & roll, you'll want to check this album out.
Junkyard kiddies.......2004-08-16
They are one of lost southern true rock band, anyone would
enjoy this and anything from them from that matter,
too bad at the time the band came out, the thing
that was big was glamrock, or bubblegum rock...
no matter this band know how to put the music
down and make it a art form..true southern treasure
Dave Roach..the singer let you know what rocking
a crowd is about not to mention Brian Baker
old' schools punk guitarist makes you rethink
rock at it's best!
One of the great bar bands.......2004-04-29
The early '90s were filled with great bar bands. Some called them hair bands, some were glam bands, but one thing was for sure - you and your buddies were in for a great Saturday night when you could hear real live bands, drink real beer, and just rock. Heavy on the guitar, catcy riffs and lines, this albu is heavy on the good times. I finally grew up and bought a house three years ago. In the move I misplaced this album, and I've missed it for three years. I rediscovered it in a box down in the basement. In 5 minutes I ripped it to my PC and the whole house was rockin'. 'All the time in the world,' 'Nowhere to go but down' and 'Misery loves company' are the standouts on this album. If you cut your teeth on '80s and '90s pre-Nirvana music, do yourself a favor and pick this one up. Otherwis remember, "misery loves company, but don't drag me down with you."
