4 out of 5 stars Not his best work, but utterly fascinating nonetheless.......2006-05-13

Scott Walker just may be the oddest, hardest-to-peg figure in the history of rock. His career is utterly schizophrenic, split between the pop crooner of the late sixties and the avant-garde, experimentalist of the nineties and beyond. One bit of lore repeated about him is that he was a major influence on David Bowie's singing style, and it is true that Walker will frequently recall David Bowie--albeit a more vocally gifted Bowie. Comparison is also often made to Bryan Ferry and Nick Cave. There is a similar theatricality in Anthony Johnson and the Johsons. Still, whatever comparisons with other performers, there is a massive difference between Walker's earlier and later work. Someone acquainted with TILT might be horrified listening to these songs. Someone who mainly knows Walker from his sixties work could well have a cardiac arrest listening to TILT.

If you had to describe Walker to someone who had never heard him, you might say that in the sixties he was trying to sings stuff very much like what Nick Cave would be singing in the eighties and nineties, while in the nineties he was singing something that Nick Cave might be singing in 2025. At the same time, he definitely is a throw back. His love of Jacques Brel is well known, and there are few singers in the history of rock who has a voice more suited for caberet. His voice was dramatic in the way that both Tim Buckley and his son Jeff were, though he was and is more polished either (though he lacks their absolutely astonishing range). At other times he recalls Bill Medley of the Righteous Brothers.

Still, there is a certain theatricality that Walker was clearly always drawn to. This is found in all of the cuts found here, whether with the Walker Brothers or in the solo cuts. I don't know if Scott Walker had a brother, but if he did he didn't perform as one of the Walker Brothers. This is just one of the host of contradictions that surrounds Walker. Just as the fact that while Walker is American, he has never enjoyed much success here, but was a huge success in Britain. This collection contains many of the Walker Brothers biggest sixties hits. There is a big difference between this collection and the much better BOY CHILD: THE BEST OF SCOTT WALKER 1967-70. The latter emphasized Walker's original compositions and demonstrate his marvelous if quirky gifts as a songwriter. This collection features comparatively few of his own compositions, but instead primarily songs by others he performed, such as Burt Bacharach and Jacques Brel.

If these songs don't reveal Walker's gifts as a song writer, they do put his voice on fine display. Some of these songs I could have donen without. Is this really made a better album by his doing "The Impossible Dream?" On the other hand, his version of Jacque Brel's "If You Go Away" is as lovely as anyone's. The biggest hits on the CD are unquestionably "Make It Easy On Yourself" and "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore." But those are hardly the only great cuts on the disc. Not everything is a gem, but there is still more than enough to justify the cost of the album.

I would, however, urge a prospective listener to try the BOY CHILD anthology before this one. This one has the hits, but I think BOY CHILD collects more interesting music. The truly adventurous should try TILT, which is easily one of the bleakest albums ever recorded.

5 out of 5 stars By Far Cyndi Lauper's Best Album.......2007-05-08

"Shine" is Cyndi's 8th studio album, it was released in 2004 (so most websites say) and was a exclusive album that was released only in Japan at the time. The EP version of the full album was released (I think) around the same time the album was going to be released, which was 2001, but thinking about it, I seen Cher in concert back in 2002, Cyndi was the opening act, I remember clearly buying the "Shine" EP from the the stands at the concert, so the full album had to have been sold in 2001 or 2002, I know that I had both versions before "At Last" was released, but some websites say that the full version came out after "At Last" was released, that's not true. The album was originally going to be released from Edel Records, but the label folded, which caused some of the songs to be leaked to the Internet. By 2002, Cyndi realized there was no point in trying to release it in a widespread fashion. The album expounds on the sound she developed with her 1996 album "Sisters Of Avalon". Mostly pop songs, it flirts with electronica while playing with old-fashioned intruments like sitars, fiddles and the sound is much lighter in mood. The songs are not lyrically linked, but each song still compliments one another really well and explores themes ranging from the Madonna-Wh*re Complex to celebrity life including "It's Hard To Be Me" and "Valentino". Because this album is a import the full version is sold anywhere from $50 & up, the EP version is $8 sometimes cheaper. Even though the album was a flop for sales in America & mostly everywhere else except Japan, this is Cyndi's best rated album to date and still is a favorite among fans.

      3 out of 5 stars A Misstep.......2007-01-16

This is basically a full-length album full of average material, with the exception of three or four songs, including the spectacular "Water's Edge" and the upbeat "Shine." Cyndi has again collaborated with Jan Pulsford, who co-wrote a majority of songs on the 1997 release "Sisters of Avalon," which had some spectacular moments and was greeted with very positive reviews. This time, however, only one or two of the Pulsford songs develop a hook. It is absolutely essential to Cyndi's music that it develops hooks to showcase her amazing voice, but on this album, Lauper is trapped by the material. If you really want to hear her "Shine" then check out her covers album "At Last." Finally, if Cyndi wants a commercial comeback, it will come via dance/club remixes or guitar/acoustic pop at this stage rather than synthesized world beat. The world is open to it I think, but the songs have to match the style of what is being played today...either that or they have to be a no-brainer perfect hit like "Time After Time" and Cyndi Lauper hasn't a song like that in almost twenty years. As a writer, I can tell that she is perhaps trying too hard. On her acoustic CD "The Body Acoustic," this is not the case as she lets go and produces a gem of an album. Her future lies with that type of attitude. Forget the critics, please the fans.

      5 out of 5 stars Shine is a GEM.......2006-02-04

First of all, to the idiot below me, it is a matter of taste of which songs / albums are the best. not one person can say what is the best, and worst, you can only give opinions! So don't talk like you know facts, because you know NOTHING.

Okay, nextly, I've had access to this album since it first got illegally released on Audio Galaxy in early 2001. It is a great album, and tells a LOT of stories.

And one more thing to the idiot below me, not everyone buys music for the pleasure of pretty noises. SOME fans that are dedicated as me, like hearing stories from a great person, and Cyndi tells not only serious stories, but comical, silly, and cute. Keep your self in check buddy!

      5 out of 5 stars Viva Cyndi!.......2005-08-19

This girl can belt them out with the best of them! "Shine" is one of the best songs I have heard of hers in years! The song, "Water's edge" will make you cry. This is one of her best works people! 10+ May she shine on!

4 out of 5 stars An Unreleased Gem That Only Partially Connects.......2005-04-23

As a fan of Cyndi Lauper's from day one (my purchase of the "Girls Just Want To Have Fun" 45 was quickly followed by my picking up SHE'S SO UNUSUAL), I considered SHINE both a must have and a bit of a mystery. On the shelf since the Fall of 2001, I'd been curious as to why no label had picked both Lauper and the disc up for distribution. My curiosity was only increased when a US-only EP featuring four excellent songs from the aborted effort (along with a weak dance remix of the title track) was released in 2002. All four tracks were extremely strong, with Lauper in fine voice. Imagine my surprise...and mild disappointment... to find out that those four (obviously remixed) cuts were pretty much the majority of SHINE's best material, with the rest all over the musical map. Lauper seems to be at a crossroads on much of the album, like she didn't quite know where to go with her career....so she went down ALL the paths, with only partially positive results. I'm not going to discuss the title track, "It's Hard To Be Me", "Madonna Whore" or "Waters Edge" - you can check out my review of the EP if you're so inclined! - but suffice it to say, all four songs are worth your attention! The first non-EP track is the pulsating "Wide Open." A throbbing dance number, Lauper's vocal is sexy and playful, yet strong and assured, while the instrumental track is meaty, as well as innovative (not many people would think about putting flute on a pumping dance cut, let alone make it work so well!). Next up is the beautiful, delicate, delicious "Rather Be With You", the first of three songs on SHINE that Lauper would be wise to reintroduce to her American fans on future releases. Even with definite dance grooves that are laced throughout the arrangement, "Rather..." basically has a love song/ballad at it's core. Lauper's voice alternates between a kittenish innocence and a throaty, soaring wail, resulting in an absolutely brilliant cut. One of SHINE'S true high points! Then we have "Who Let In The Rain?", which still has me scratching my head....why recut something when you totally nailed it the first time?!? First appearing on 1993's HAT FULL OF STARS, this version does nothing to better the original and, in fact, may even be a tad bit inferior. Still, it remains a gorgeous song, always well worth hearing. "Comfort You" is pretty much a run of the mill dance track, but it features one of Lauper's cleanest, most crisp vocals to date, as well as some tasty sax work, while "Eventually" is another one of the three songs Lauper shouldn't let fade away without proper notice. A haunting ballad with a searing vocal, the song also features some of SHINE's best lyrics: "I had some tea with a gal from Paris/We talked about life, sex, love & poetry/And you can't help it/Your name came up again/And she said man those kind of guys/Really know how to steal the oxygen." In 5:28 Lauper captures all the frustration, resignation, desire and pain of lost love, yet does it in a way that is at the same time both hypnotic and instantly identifiable to the listener (we've all been there - that one love that just never completely leaves the back of your memory...or heart). The highs of "Eventually" are followed by the rock bottom lows of "Valentino." This story of true, albeit lost, love and arranged marriages could have been an interesting enough song, but the loopy vocal and Mid-Eastern - meets - Mediterranean instrumentation quickly prevents that from happening...the song is plodding and misconceived, almost too arty for art's sake, and does nothing whatsoever to enhance SHINE. "This Kind Of Love", the third and final song that needs to resurface some time/some where has a cool retro vibe to it: picture some 70's R&B mixed with Tina Turneresque 80's pop/soul. The instrumentation is fresh and uncluttered, while Lauper's lead vocal is clean and crystal clear, yet powerful and totally in command of the song. "Higher Plane" is a frantic dance number that just seems a bit dated (What is it with these aging chanteuses - Cyndi, Cher and even Melanie(!) instantly come to mind - trying to recast themselves as dance divas?!?). Lauper can - and has! - done better. The disc closes with the sexy lullaby "Miss My Baby." Equal parts sweet and sensual, you gotta wonder...is the "baby" a real baby? A lover? The song's edgy coyness is endearing, while the arrangement and vocals are both top notch. Which begs to ask the question....what will Cyndi Lauper do next? Stacked up against AT LAST, her 2003 "comeback" album of standards and oldies, SHINE seems sort of "kitchen-sinkish"....it's a bit scattered and unfocused, with a little bit of everything thrown in the mix, like she just wasn't sure where to go with her career as the new century was starting. It seems as if she has recaptured said focus on AT LAST, concentrating on songs that just let that incredible voice....well, shine! Here's hoping that she can combine that focus with some of the stronger songwriting chops exhibited sporadically throughout SHINE on her next CD. Until then, at least two third's of SHINE is well worth your time, and in today's music market that's saying a lot!

It's amazing that someone with Andy Stochansky's songwriting and singing sensibilities has not yet become a household name .. but from the "sneak peak" of this EP, it's obvious that this will come very soon! The first track "Shine" certainly has potential to be a national anthem. "House of Gold" is a not your standard love song and that's what makes it wonderful. What Stochansky does in his songs time and time again is give us hope. My hope is that the rest of the world will wake up and discover this amazing talent just across the border!
