Styled more along the lines of a revolutionary cell than a band, Bloc Party approach the medium of rock'n'roll with the sort of high seriousness usually reserved for philosophy lectures. Yet on Silent Alarm, this "autonomous unit" of smart, wiry London youth don't just succeed in reinvigorating the artform--they come pretty close to reinventing it from the ground up. Whereas early singles like "She's Hearing Voices" found the band still attempting to chisel their own image out of familiar post-punk reference points--The Fall, Joy Division, and Gang Of Four, to name but three--newer tracks such as "Like Eating Glass" and the prickly "Price Of Gas" find Bloc Party pioneering a freshly-minted template of staccato percussion, expansive soundscapes, and cryptic lyrics that artfully straddle the political and the personal. Russell Lissack has forsaken that overdone hallmark of post-punk, brittle tortured-fretboard skronk, in favor of an effects-laden guitar sound that adds genuine prettiness to Bloc Party's edgy rush. Influential, to say the least..........2007-07-07

It's very rare for me to get around to writing a review for any album, let alone a British pop group. However, this album compels me to make the time to put in my two cents.

I'm under the notion that Third Eye Blind's first self-titled release in 1996 (?) was one of the most influential albums of the 90s, given its unbelievable accessibility, the amount of radio-play for at least 4 singles, and the last 4 tracks on the album which were, in my opinion, better than any of the singles, including Jumper and How's it Gonna Be. Third Eye Blind set out a different pace and track for future bands to follow. Whether or not you like their next 2 albums, just throw their first release in your player and give it a spin, beginning to end, and come back later.

Having said that, Bloc Party's 2005 release is already the most memorable output of the 21st century concerning rock/pop/dance/indie/hipster, whatever the hell you want to call the conglomerate of those different genres. I'll stake the claim that, come 2011, you'll want to keep this album in your short-list of reliable things to listen to. Spectacular, blood-pumping highs ("Like Eating Glass," "Positive Tension," "This Modern Love") and impossible-to-ignore introspective tracks ("Banquet," "So Here We Are," "Plans," "Compliments") than any album of at least the past five years.

If you already own it, pay special attention to the final 5 tracks. If you don't own it, get it, jam out to the first 6 or 7 songs for a few weeks, then throw out "Plans" and "Compliments" back-to-back for your listening enjoyment. When an album does not have a skippable track on it, you know you've found something special.

One heck of a debut.......2007-06-27

They may be a bit over-hyped, but Bloc Party is still a group with a lot of talent and a very unique style. The whole album is very enjoyable, not just the singles.

Inspired release from the British whiz kids finds a passionate, forcefully assured unity driving this impressively emulated synthesis the unit has concocted, taking everything these humble innovators have heard in their young musical lives and offered a compelling synthesis to all that is youthful and relevant in carrying that torch. For once I think the crazed British music press actually got it right with Bloc Party's compelling debut, an album looking backwards and forwards simultaneously while remaining a fascinating Rock debut on a track-by-track, note-for-note basis. Styled with a delicate, intricate and still gritty, rockable, and danceable approach, Kele and company managed to silence nearly all alarms with an admirably focused debut sprayed with enough instrumental embellishment and rhythmic/melodic knowledge to make any up and coming new-school rock bands blush. In the thick of things we do tend to see a few of Bloc Party's themes (particularly in Okereke's guitar and chorus delivery) to bog certain songs down in repetition, but overall this blistering reinvigoration to Rock still has yet to be surpassed or emulated itself.

Excellent CD. It's one of very few that doesn't make me feel like I've been ripped off, and even more of a rarity, I really like every song.

The disc itself is great but I was really hoping to get 'Always New Depths', as it is listed in Disc 2 of the Track Listing above. Much to my displeasure, ONLY THE MAIN DISC was included in my CD case.

It is listed one (1) disc in the Product Description (they sent what was promised), but then two (2) discs are listed in the Track Listing, so DON'T BE FOOLED. The fine print says the bonus disc is included for the first 15,000 sold. D'oh.

One of the worst albums produced this year.......2006-05-12

I've heard the first album called 'Silent Alarm' and that album was pretty good. I like all kinds of music from techno to hip hop , alternative to metal and rock, so I know what sounds good and what doesn't. I'm also a music producer so I'm fairly experienced with sounds and production techniques. When I heard this album it sounded as if a child who just learnt about music production produced this album. It is by far and truly one of the worst albums this year. I've seen many people have given this album a five stars rating but if you like music that's not totally basic and boring, then this ALBUM IS NOT FOR YOU so don't waste your money. You have probably noticed that this website 'Amazon' has a lot of 'Used' copies of this album available. Guess why!

Good but not what I expected.......2006-03-17

Let me start off by saying I loved Silent Alarm. I've played that CD for days on end without ever getting sick of it. It took me a few months to warm up to the idea of Silent Alarm remixes, just because I figured too much of a good thing would ruin Bloc Party for me. I saw that groups like M83, Engineers, and Ladytron would be doing the remixes, so I figured I would check it out. I found that some tracks really stuck with me (see M83's sonic version of 'Pioneers' and Death From Above 1979's appropriatly rocked cover of 'Luno') and others very dissapointing, mostly for lack of originality. In particular Ladytron's version of 'Like Eating Glass' almost made me consider not listening to the whole CD at all. After a couple of listens the album has grown on me, but my overall opinion on it hasn't changed much. It may be because I love Bloc Party so much that I am biased towards to remixes, but I will admit they are interesting. They just aren't Bloc Party. Which I suppose was the goal. If so, Bloc Party can consider the album a success. The one thing I would not say about the album is that it tops the original. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a stellar sophomore effort from Bloc Party, and that the remixes are not a vision of things to come from this band.

Even better than the original..........2006-03-02

Most of us are rightly leery of remixes, especially of excellent albums like Silent Alarm. But in this case if you really listen to the remix (especially if you do so before hearing the original, like I did), you'll find it offers greater depth and listening rewards. You pick up new subtleties each time you hear it. You can experience the marvellous laid-back satisfaction of extended versions of most tracks; for example: eight wonderful minutes of the superb "She's Hearing Voices", a longer, more intense and dancier version of "Helicopter", and an even catchier version of "Price of Gas". Anyone who dismisses this remix is guilty of a short attention span. Granted, one or two of the remixed tracks are a bit off, but overall it stands on its own as a brilliant alternative to a brilliant original.

Sound the "Alarm".......2005-05-01

An energetic debut, by U.K. lads who tear their way through some very catchy post-punk. Critically lauded, taking their cues from some of the best rock'n'roll bands. A lot of fans enthusiastially pronounce them The Greatest Band of the Year, and a few even venture (inaccurately) to Greatest Band Ever.

Okay, that's the description of last year's Franz Ferdinand, whom the Bloc Party seem very similar to. And they fill much the same space as Franz Ferdinand, except that their admittedly catchy music lacks something the previous band has: Spunk and polished flair.

They start off well with the smooth post-punker "Like Eating Glass," with sharp chords and Matt Tong's mile-a-minute drumming, as Kele Okereke yowls over it all. And "Helicopter" wins the prize for one of the most fun, catchy pop songs thus far this year -- it's almost impossible to sit still to this.

But a certain awkwardness comes in with the next songs, which sound like an unholy fusion of the Beach Boys and contemporary rap. Thudding rock songs sit side by side with some rather maudlin ballads, along with the odd bit of drums-and-xylophone rock. Yes, I said drums and xylophone.

Is it derivative? Oh yeah. I heard Blur, Joy Division, even a dash of more modern bands like Interpol, which itself is a descendent of Joy Division. Is it catchy? Several parts of it are, and instrumentally these guys are are absolute joys. Tong's drumming is kinetic, and the sharp riffs are absolutely incisive. Okereke's howling voice veers wildly between being an irritant and a joy -- sometimes both in the same song. At least he's never boring.

But there's a certain fire and verve missing from the Bloc Party's debut. Not only do they take themselves WAAYYYY too seriously, but they lack that energetic, original, new-spin flair that makes a new rock band stand out of the crowd. It shows in their songwriting: they devoted an entire political song to... the rising cost of gas. Seriously. Somehow I can't quite manage to be stirred.

The Bloc Party is a fun listen, with their tight, infectious rhythms. But they're no Joy Division, no Blur, no Interpol -- not yet, anyway. Maybe on their second album they'll bloom beyond mere fun.

I've heard it on the radio, read it on magazines reviews and I don't know what all the fuss is about?
It seems that we are always looking for the new "greatest band", playing a hit and miss kind of game.
Bloc Party...good fast, simple, powerful songs. When they slow down the beat a little...still good, simple and catchy.
I don't think they go to deep on any subject, but they don't have to; it's just rock music!
I enjoyed this one a lot, because when I got it, I really wasn't expecting much from it.
It's alright to compare bands, sounds and styles, as long as you get to the core and enjoy each one of them.

Buy this one, you won't regret it.

Solid Debut.......2005-02-22

Bloc Party are a new British band hailing from London. Their sound, I am told, is heavily influenced by Gang of Four (who I don't know well) and very early Cure (who I do know very well, and can confirm). I also hear traces of Interpol and maybe some Talking Heads.

The album is a mixture of fast upbeat songs and slower, quieter numbers. On the whole I prefer the more energetic songs, such as the opener 'Like Eating Glass'. At approximately 50 minutes it drags very slightly, and I wouldn't have objected if they had shaved a couple of the more downbeat songs off the end - but this is nontheless good, good music, which sits very well alongside Franz Ferdinand's debut. I just have to mention the ace rhythm section too, it's up there with Blondie's.

Recommended if you're into British guitar-based indie along the classic lines of the Smiths, the Cure, or Echo and the Bunnymen. Radiohead fans should also consider giving it a go.

Bloc Party got my attention when I read a review wich stated that if Franz Ferdinand enjoyes the big succes they do, there's no reason for Bloc Party to not be a similar commercial succes.

Though I do think the musical differences are too big to compare the two bands, they both share a common feature: a very good debut album, for Silent Alarm is indeed very good.

Singer Kele Okereke's voice sounds vaguely like a cross between The Cure's Robert Smith and Blur's Damon Albarn. Musicaly there's influences of probably every British band I've ever heard in my life.

But the first thing that comes to notice is the extremely tight rythem section. There's an inventive bass- and drum line in almost every song.

I'd say this is a very good (debut) album, and up 'till now it keeps getting better upon each listen.

Absolutely Brilliant!.......2005-02-25

Bloc Party's debut album Silent Alarm is without a doubt a masterpiece. One of the best new bands to emerge from the UK alternative rock scene, post-punk Bloc Party create a stream of eloquent songs so good I swear they all seem to be potential singles. Even the "slower" songs are full of energy.

Bloc Party's strength lies in creating fast, funky rhythms with a punk feel. As a drummer, I know a good drummer when I see one and Matt Tong is a good drummer; his beats are all innovative and almost give the effect of a drum machine, they're so precise. Although I'll admit it took me a while to get used to Kele Okereke's very unique voice, after a few rotations on my cd player I really grew to like it. Both Kele and Russell Lissack are strong guitarists, and each song has a very distinct guitar line that will make you want to dance or at least nod your head until it feels like it will fall off. Gordon Moakes, the bassist, adds a lot of the funk to the band, providing steady yet fun beats that will get stuck in your head.

The best songs on this album are "Positive Tension," "Pioneers," "Plans," "Helicopter," "This Modern Love," and their debut single "Banquet." "Banquet" has been a huge dance hit in the UK this summer, and for good reason. "Plans" is the most haunting song on the album, and it is reminiscent of the creepiest songs on Radiohead's OK Computer; it's quite dark and saddening. "Helicopter" is just plain fun, while "Pioneers" is powerful and engaging. "This Modern Love" serves as something that I think sets Bloc Party apart: a slow song with gloomy lyrics but with quick drums. They're one of the only bands I've heard who can do that. "Positive Tension" is probably my personal favorite; it's smart and purposeful, fast and driven, enjoyable and danceable, and has an absolutely amazing guitar solo that makes me nod my head in the middle of class to it, since I can't get it out of my head! There's really no other word for it other than "cool." However, in the end it really is difficult to choose the "best" songs, as every song is astoundingly good and it all depends on what you personally like.

In the end, Bloc Party is a very talented, innovative new band with refreshing songs that have never been done before. This album is energetic and fun, and Bloc Party makes many statements throughout it without the listener even realizing they're doing it. I highly recommend this band if you're a fan of Brit rock/Indie guitar rock/Post-Punk; the bands Franz Ferdinand, Interpol, Razorlight, the Killers, Radiohead, and Gang of Four; and are still mourning the devastating break-up of the Libertines. I guarantee that no matter what you listen to over the next few months, you'll keep turning back to this cd... that is if you ever take it out of your cd player long enough to listen to anything else.

As being a citizen from across the ocean i luckily own this sensation and feel it is my job to inform you all about why you have to get it. Firstly let me set one thing straight - they sound nothing like Franz Ferdinand although people are comparing Bloc Party to them.
The only comparison is that Bloc Party are going to do in 2005 what Franz Ferdinand did in 2004. The mix between the unpredictable but soaring guitar rifts and Kele's melodic voice is what makes the album great.
There is a wide range of songs on the album. Varying from the Coldplay like 'Banquet' and 'The Pioneers' to 'Positive Tension', which The Mars Volta would have been pleased with. 'Like Eating Glass' introduces us to the album and like all the best moments on this album, it's strength lies in the balanced way all the instrumentalists play their part.
The british music scene is ready to take over the states and Bloc Party, along with The Futurheads, will do a great job.
Fans of futurheads, interpol, tv on the radio, the walkman, kaiser chiefs will all achieve extreme happiness from this album.
