Raider Genius.......2006-12-21
These two classic Columbia albums are not to be missed. Arizona and Silver Bird were the two big hit singles from these two releases but the albums are full of great songs, both original and covers. Who would have thought that anyone could improve on Johnny Cash's dark reading of the Kristofferson masterpiece Sunday Morning Comin Down? Mark's version is not as dark and dismal sounding as Johnny's and it works. Mark's voice is much more palatable on the song as well.
It is well known that Mark Lindsay was the creative genius in Paul Revere and The Raiders. On the later Raider albums (my favorites), it was Mark who Produced and arranged those albums as well as writing the lions share of their original material.
On his solo albums Mark headed in a middle of the road / easy listening direction. Something that I never really understood. I always thought he should have gone in the singer-songwriter/rock direction. Like James Taylor, Jackson Browne, Elton John etc. Mark's vocals and songwriting skills were on par with the greats of that early 70s era.
Still the solo albums are great, especially if you are a fan of the Raiders. This stuff is softer, but you can't mistake the voice featured in Raider classics like Kicks, Hungy, Steppin Out, Good Thing, Don't Take It So Hard, Mr. Sun Mr. Moon etc.
It is nice to have the Arizona and Silver Bird albums on CD. I have a question for Columbia Records and Collectibles for that matter. When are we going to get Mark Lindsay's third solo album, You've Got A Friend on CD, or the classic Raiders albums Indian Reservation and Country Wine??? These are long overdue!
It would also be nice to get some bonus tracks inlcuded.
Time's a wastin'
Double Good.......2006-07-23
The first two of Mark Lindsay's solo work are so good that it's a little surprising that these two albums did not sell more than they did. What good fortune to work with producer Jerry Fuller and arranger/conductor Artie Butler on the majority of these songs. Just listen to the Fuller/Butler collaborations, "Feel the Warm"(which Billy Eckstine also covered) and "Bookends", pop gems in three minutes time. I especially admired Artie Butler's very different, more rhythmic arrangement for "We've Only Just Begun" and Neil Diamond's "And the Grass Won't Pay no Mind", which has a slightly different mix (more guitars) than the vinyl version. The slowed down Bacharach-David classic from the Broadway musical Promises, Promises, "I'll Never Fall In Love Again" is just sublime. To Collectables: Why no songwriting credits on the CD? Especially when the back booklet is almost a plain, white blank. An overflow of talent, nonetheless!!
A wonderful solo album.......2006-03-08
That was yesteryear during my teen age when I was a great fan of Mark Lindsay, whom I not only loves his youthful appearance, but to the extent of his wonderful solo hits in this particular album, the only rare hit that is missing is a song called 'Something's big' But then I should be quite contended with this recent released album.
A Great Solo Effort By Mark Lindsay !.......2005-10-04
In 1970-71; Mark Lindsay worked some solo magic while he was still with the band, Paul Revere And The Raiders, and had us all listening and singing to the Top 10 Smash, Arizona, and his Top 30 followup, Silverbird, and both are on this CD. Three others on this Disc are the Ballads, Come Saturday Morning, We've Only Just Begun, and the George Harrison Penned, Something. His beautiful Medley of the Lennon / McCartney Penned, The Long And Winding Road / Yesterday, is another highlight to this wonderful Disc. Mark blends those two songs in perfectly with his voice....Outstanding !
Besides the popular, Arizona, and, Silverbird, there are also two more Radio Friendly songs here that several of you will remember and I think both were severely underrated and should have done much better on the charts than they did and they are, And The Grass Won't Pay No Mind, and, Miss America. This is what I think about those two.......... Marks voice is stunning on the beautiful Neil Diamond Penned, And The Grass Won't Pay No Mind, and that song only reached the Top 50. Mark also gives another stellar vocal performance on, Miss America, and that one also only made the Top 50 and that song is so beautiful it is breathtaking. Turn the volume up and listen in awe ! The Top 50 nor does this review do justice to how beautiful those two Ballads are. That's the great thing about owning this CD though because you can listen to these four classics plus the other seventeen any time you want too. Several of Mark's tunes on this compilation are toned down and very mellow but I believe his talent is still as remarkable as it was with The Raiders. You and I both know that these twenty one songs are Oldies.....but they are definitely Goodies!.....Highly Recommended !
Final Note: It has been thirty six years ( 1969 ) since I seen Mark And The Raiders in Concert ! What a night ! It was great !
sultry singer.......2004-08-22
I haven't heard my teenage crush since I was a child but, he was just as sultry as I remembered and I wasn't at all disappointed in the album it was spectacular.

...another music fan fan..........2006-10-24
i agree infatically with 'a music fan's' assessement as well...i remember buying this vinyl when it first came out...there was just something about his face on the cover...you can see a little of the 'pancake/clown' makeup still left on his cheek, and his eyes just had such depth to them...
and when i played the album...wow...what soul this man had...what a songwriter he was, to scrape the inner-essence of every emotion...his version of 'show must go on' is the only version...it is the 'real, honest' version'...
i also remember how 'the dancer' used to touch me every time i listened to it...heck...the whole album from side to side engulfed me in it's presence...it was, and is, extraordinary...
and then came 'just a boy', another sign of the brilliance that continued forth from this man, with, sadly, a hit single...and i think that was the beginning of the end...
the last good record that i think he ever made was 'another year', which featured an extraordinary song called 'only dreaming', which i'm amazed you never find on any of his collections...no, it wasn't a 'hit', but, in the early world of leo sayer, that never mattered anyway...if you ever get a chance to listen to it, listen to it with the same ears you listened to 'show must go on' for the first time with...lyrically, it's a powerful blend of angst and fear, with a compensity for false bravado and overcompensation...
but this is where it all started...and this is the true core of the man...ignore the paths that he latter stumbled upon...appreciate this time we had with him...
Leo Sayer Rocks 100%!.......2005-08-02
Leo is a pimp, he is the shiznit. I hope that he reads this & I can tell him how much I love him. This cd rocks. My friend JJ has it. His parents are like so into Sayer you will not believe. They have a shrine dedicated to Mr. Sayer. Mr. Sayer I love you,
I don't have this cd, but i want to get it. i'm a poor child.
Total agreement!.......2004-01-22
I can add absolutely NOTHING to "A Music Fan's" review other than to say I wore the record out listening to it back in 73/74. My son, who is now 31 years of age, could sit for an hour with the headphones on listening to it seemingly mesmerized rocking back and forth on the sofa.
I couldn't wait for his subsequent recordings but ultimately found them wanting as it seemed he sidestepped his roots and original soulful stylings to appeal to a broader audience. Unfortunate. This, his first album, was without a doubt his best.
I had the good fortune to see him perform on a late night TV program around the time this album was released. He was dressed in his clown personna. I was absolutely captivated. The showman's, showman.
Again, congratulations to "A Music Fan" for his or her ability to put down in words what so many of us feel toward Leo Sayer's first and best effort.
The original life of Leo Sayer.......2003-10-07
Most people familiar with Leo Sayer know him for his pop hits like You Make Me Feel Like Dancing and When I Need You. While well constructed, and fine for what they are, these decidedly pop, radio-friendly, rather saccharine Top 40 tunes are relegated to their time and beyond that not especially insightful or memorable. But before all this there was a whole other side to Leo Sayer, and this is what you find in Silverbird.
Silverbird is his first album, originally released in 1973, quite a few years before his metamorphose to the popster that most know, and whatever fame and success he achieved later. In the beginning, starting with this album, he was a melancholic intriguing figure in pop/rock music, arguably ahead of or outside of his time. In these early days he performed in clown persona, complete with costume and makeup. The image was androgynous, and when combined with the music, created a dark aura of irony, isolation, vulnerability and emotional depth that was at once highly personal, in some ways relatable, and powerful enough to make him, as an artist, songwriter and performer, an intriguing figure that seemed to be verging on nightmarish.
Set to a backdrop of mournful, eerie string arrangements and a sparse piano based band, the songs on this album are dark, strange and disturbing, and ultimately captivating. The themes are isolation and loneliness; a youthful cocktail of depression, separation, failure and angst, with an underlying desperation for love and connection.
The album opens with a rocker, Innocent Bystander. The lyrical image of "running down the track, trying to reach the end, but the train never comes..." work as a metaphor for unfulfilled hopes and dreams; time going by with nothing accomplished to the point of near insanity. Goodnight Old Friend comes across with the same feeling of Robert Johnson's Hellhounds. You get a sense that the "old friend," may well be his personal demons or the devil himself. Drop Back has a chorus set to an incessant pleading string arrangement reminiscent of Eleanor Rigby, with a lyrical storyline about being rejected by a rather upset, almost shocked love interest. You hear a sense of frustration and misunderstanding that leads to unhealthy introspection and confusion. The title track Silverbird is a brief, haunting, wordless vocal and piano piece that evokes both a circus sense and a haunting echo that reveals again, a sense of isolation underlying this deceivingly somewhat happy tune. The Show Must Go On was a Top 40 hit for Three Dog Night, and as a result perhaps the most, if not the only, familiar song to the early Leo Sayer uninitiated. His version is starker, more sideshowish, almost vaudevillian, and more foreboding with the mixed image of the happiness of a circus clown and the reality that he has somehow angered his audience. The Dancer is a mournful tale about a tragic fall for a high wire dancer. Tomorrow (Is The First Day of the Rest of Your Life) is a thumping rocker, which turns this clichéd ironic phrase on its head with a sense of being less purely optimistic as encouraging, yet aware of the difficulties and challenges of life.
For the most part these are the themes and images of the entire album (I am going by the original record and these comments don't relate to bonus tracks since I have not heard them).
This is the kind of music that should appeal to fans of artists like Nick Drake, Love's Forever Changes, The Zombies Odyssey and the Oracle and Roger Daltry's first solo album, Daltry (most popular track Giving It All Away), which is Daltry performing songs written by Leo Sayer in that period. It probably will not appeal to the fans of Sayer's disco era Top 40 music. To them this will be startlingly different. But for those who appreciate the artists and albums mentioned here, this will probably be a satisfying experience, not to mention for those unfamiliar with Sayer's pre-hit life - a fascinating, almost mysterious look into the abandoned direction of an artist who once upon a time made some very self reflective, dramatic, and in this reviewer's view, artistically intriguing, honest, revealing music.
I for one, can't wait to get this CD.
THE BEST CD EVER.......2002-06-01

Album Description
Music was originally a communal act. It was utilitarian and, in a way, magic - it made work easy. Music was also a reflection of the nascent social order, with one lead voice and the rest responding. The first solo music was therefore a powerful act of liberation, of spirit. This recording contains a great diversity of solos; more than a millennium separates the oldest from the most recent; there are solos for flutes, reeds, brass, lutes, zithers, fiddles, piano, percussion, and voice; the music comes from the Near East, the Far East, Australia, Europe, and the Americas. But despite the contrast of instruments and styles, what gradually becomes apparent is the similarity beneath the surface of these works.
Soul Alone: The Art of the Solo suggests that there is some fundamental distinction about the way musicians express themselves in a solo setting - something that defines the Art of the Solo.
This is some of the most personally felt music the world's greatest traditions have to offer. If the act of making music is a personal one, so too is listening. Music was always meant to be listened to - by other people, or by something else, whether you call it God or nature or by another name. And that is the reason for
Soul Alone: The Art of the Solo. Because after all, music can be performed alone, and heard alone, but it is still a communal art, meant to be shared. Perhaps it only truly becomes music when it is shared.

Album Description
Fire is the inspiration for this release of the young Navajo/Apache artist, Perry Silverbird. To Native Americans, fire represents purity, creativity, and immortality; all of which are attributes of Silverbird's music. Purity is apparent in the serenely soulful notes of the flute that weave a tapestry of clarity and brilliance. The spirituality of his performance is awing which is not surprising considering that Silverbird strongly believes that the message of God is manifested through his music.
The creativity of the artist can be seen in his imaginative, mystical chanting that can be dreamy, peaceful, and powerful at the same time. Encouraged by producer Steve Roach, this release includes much more chanting than Silverbird's previous work, and it can take a toll on the artist. Silverbird asserts that chanting does not come easily to him. The musician must get into an almost trance-like state in order to be able to express the essence of one's being and spirit through chants. Silverbird claims that a fire inside him kindles the need to express himself and chanting is surely an eloquent and powerful means of doing so.
Finally, the constant, pulsing beat of the drums illustrates the immortality of man's spirit as he and his descendants continue to perform these ancient rhythms. The messages expressed in each song are also immortal in their significance to people everywhere. Silverbird states that each song conveys a situation or emotion that most people have experienced. For example, one of the most poignant songs, Tsegihi (Prayer of the Night Flute), paints an aural picture of how we are when alone. Fed by the flames of creativity and fueled by sparks of inspiration, the
Spirit of Fire is a sizzling union of flute-playing, percussion, and chanting that is both primal and contemporary.

Album Description
The wind whistling through Arizona's Canyon de Chelly and songbirds that make that beautiful canyon their home, join the flute, drumming, and chanting of Native American performer, Perry Silverbird, in a tribute to his land and culture in
The Blessing Way.
The listener is transported to a rocky ridge within the canyon as the sun rises and the birds awaken. Perry Silverbird begins the melodious poetry of his small reed flute. The music seems to spiral through the canyon, echoing off its massive red walls. As the sun moves higher, his drumming commences like the pulsing rhythm of the earth. Far away, there is chanting. It draws nearer and surrounds the listener with the cleansing of The Blessing Way, a sacred Navajo ceremony. Gradually, while the sunlight fades and the canyon turns to twilight, the chanting and drumming fade as well. When the lone flute finally ceases and the birds have nested for the night, all that is left is the wind whistling once again through the haunting darkness of Canyon de Chelly.
The Blessing Way was recorded on location in the Navajo Nation's spectacular Canyon de Chelly (pronounced Shay), in the northeastern corner of Arizona. The musical performances are crystal clear and the sounds of nature are quite remarkable, making the combination both uplifting and calming.

Healing sounds, with one word - "Magical".......1999-12-15
I have been listening to this CD since this summer. I can see how much healing and soothing it has done for me and my soul. This music with the magical sounds of the wooden flute is very balancing and uplifting. The sounds are so profound to release all the tension amongst us. Very powerful! If I were you, I would have one CD at work environment and one at home. It is also very good while driving in rush hours too. Very well done. Thank you Perry!

Album Description
The World in Our Eyes: A Native American Vision of Creation, celebrates the wisdom of America's indigenous people through myth and music. Conceived and produced by J. Reuben Silverbird and Rob Russo, this two-disk set features an artful combination of narration, traditional Native American performances, environmental sounds and synthesized landscapes that capture the essence of our country's most ancient heritage. The Navajo, Zuni, Hopi, Apache, Cheyenne, and Pawnee nations are separated by geography and language, yet share beliefs about the origin of the universe. Silverbird has distilled these insights of Native American cultures into a powerful and poetic narration.
"I'm constantly asked at lectures and performances about what Indians believed as far as the birth of the world was concerned," says Silverbird, who frequently speaks about Native American concerns around the country. "Despite the differences between tribes, they all have common symbols: the Great Spirit, Sky Father, Earth Mother, the circle, the rain, the eagle. Although some of us have tried to keep many of our sacred myths and ceremonies secret, I think that projects like this one will help non-Native Americans to understand Indians better."
On disk one, Silverbird weaves these age-old ideas into a colorful tapestry of dramatic recitation; music, and natural sounds, guide listeners on a journey from the primordial awakenings of the universe, to man's discovery of his true nature. Disk two presents the compelling instrumental score to
The World in Our Eyes: A Native American Vision of Creation without narration, providing a continuous musical meditation on the ideas expressed throughout the first disk.
Customer Reviews:
An exoerience in Native American music and culture.......2006-06-30
I purchased this CD because like those of us interested in Native American culture,Silverbird goes into the explanation of the Creation as seen through their eyes. Musically this CD is an experience and journey everyone should take at least once. What disappointed me was that Silberbird did not tell enough story of the culture during the musical experience. But that is strictly from my point of view. To others it might be fine. Otherwise it is a well put together CD with story booklet included, and kids would love this CD as it is similar in nature to Peter and the Wolf.
Creation.......2003-09-23
What a soothing walk through the circle of season's. This is one you will want to settle in alone for and turn the volume up.
His voice is mesmerizing and will take you through the journey to witness it all.
Excellent CD would buy over again.
Pure ecstacy...it transports you from one world to another........1999-04-23
This CD is magical. Mr. Silverbird's voice is hypnotic. I found myself closing my eyes and being transported from this world to another. Mr. Silverbird's son, Perry Silverbird, plays flute on this recording and it such a clear and joyful sound. This is a musical masterpiece, whether you are a fan of Native music or not.
