I Love This cd!!.......2006-03-05
Very very good!!!! I think the song called "on and on" is amazing I herd it on "chill with chris botti" and all the other songs are great! but this cd!!!
A fun album.......2006-02-17
Delightful mix of old-fashioned jazz and new sampling. very enjoyable party album.
If you love jazz you'll love this!.......2005-10-17
Excellent album! I almost didn't buy this CD it was in the used bin and I figured I like his last CD Aural & Hearty so it was worth giving it a shot. I hadn't even heard of this album or Mocean Worker releasing anything new. I was totally suprised to find an excellent buy. This is what new jazz should sound like! Not the usual crap like Norah Jones or all the typical pop friendly, adult comtemporary s**t that's flooding the airwaves. My God what the f**k? People burn all those albums and buy something from a real artist like Mocean Worker. This album is just amazing! It reminds me of music from a jazz era forgotten. It's got blues, doo-wop, loads of jazz and an electronic (trip-hop, downbeat) background with slight touches of samples like Nina Simone doing Blackbird all blended together to create an excellent CD. It's an amazing album and it's infectious as soon as you pop it in it makes you wanna get up and groove to the first beats of Chick a Boom Boom Boom. Definitely worth checking out.

A must have!.......2005-08-20
I origonaly heard 'Chick a boom boom boom' on a local Jazz station & had to write down who it was so I could get it ASAP.
Jazzy/Funky-I do love the entire CD-which is a rare deal in a world of 1 or 2 good track's with a lot of filler.
I have a new favorite artist.......2005-03-16
The first time I heard "Right Now" on the radio,I stopped and thought, "What is this? This is cool." It seemed to be a blend of blues/jazz/techno. I'd never call myself a techno fan, but with the blues/jazz stylings, this just WORKED. I immediately went out to buy the CD, but no one had it. So, I ordered it and waited. The whole time I was waiting, I was thinking, "Man, I hope the rest of the CD is as cool as 'Right Now'." When I was finally able to pick it up, I immediately threw it in the CD player and smiled. It was. As with most albums, there are a some tracks I like better than others, but one thing I can say is that they're all different. This isn't bubblegum pop where every song sounds the same. Some tracks are fast, some are slow, but they're all interesting. I highly recommend this album, if you can find it.

It's no mean feat being the world's foremost crossover artist--a task that risks alienating two disparate audiences and everyone in between--but somebody had to do it, and Andrea Bocelli again walks that artistic tightrope with impressive deftness. The title may imply a casual intimacy (indeed, the singer admits to taking a more "hands-on" approach to the album's conception and production), but it's a collection that nonetheless continues to expand on the Italian tenor's ambitious internationalism. His collaboration "Sin Tu Amor" immerses his voice in the Gipsy Kings' own rich Iberian folk-pop fusion with compelling results, while "Where Love Goes" (a musical focal point of the film Lazarus Child), his English language duet with 11-year-old prodigy Holly Stell, achieves an almost liturgical grace. "Tu Ci Sei" (You Are There) continues in the romantic vein of his familiar theme "Con Te Partiro" (Time to Say Goodbye), while the single "Dell' Amore Non Si Sa" (With Love You Never Know) features Bocelli in a signature dramatic tour de force collaboration with arranger Mauro Malavasi, the accomplished producer of the singer's Romanza and Sogno albums. Bocelli's shrewd taste and vocal prowess here not only again redeem an oft-maligned genre, but elevate it considerably in the bargain. --Jerry McCulley

HOW DO YOU SAY,"WOW," IN ITALIAN?.......2007-06-22
BEFORE I START, LET ME SAY, THAT I AM A DANCE CLUB GUY AND THAT, ORDINARILY, THIS IS NOT MY KIND OF MUSIC. OF COURSE, I LAUGH AS I SAY THAT, AS, APPARENTLY, A NEW DOOR HAS OPENED IN MY LIFE, THANKS TO THIS MAN.
A FEW YEARS AGO I HAD HEARD ANDREA DO, "CON TE PARTIRO," ON A PBS SPECIAL AND MY EYES FILLED WITH TEARS THAT ANY HUMAN COULD MAKE SUCH SOUNDS. I WAS ASTOUNDED; MORE ASTOUNDING, STILL, WAS TO HEAR THIS ALBUM AND FIND THAT HIS VOICE HAD ACTUALLY VASTLY IMPOVED OVER TIME. HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE? " CON TE..," PALES IN COMPARISON TO THE QUALITY OF THIS WORK; THE TRACKS ON THIS CD ARE PERFECT, FULL, RICH, AND MORE MOVING THAN ANYTHING I HAVE EVER HEARD. I HAVE HAD IT A WEEK, NOW, AND I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO LISTEN TO ANYTHING ELSE FOR VERY LONG, AND I PLAY IT OVER AND OVER. IT HAS BEEN MANY YEARS SINCE I HAVE BEEN AFFECTED LIKE THIS BY ANY VOCAL CD. IF HE NEVER RECORDED AGAIN HE WOULD HAVE MADE A MARK ON THE WORLD OF AUDIO NEVER TO BE ERASED OR FORGOTTEN. WHAT A VOICE! WHAT SONGS! THE CUT, "LIBERTA," ABSOLUTELY KILLS ME WITH FEELINGS OF JOY AND MARVEL. I HAVE EVEN TAKEN UP STUDYING ITALIAN BECAUSE OF IT.
TREAT YOURSELF, AND A GOOD FRIEND, TO THE SOUNDS ON THIS CD. SIT AND WATCH A SUNSET WITH IT ON... I MEAN NOW!
Just buy it........2007-05-30
If you like soft music that make's you feel up beat, just order a Andrea Bocelli CD. Listening to his CD's after being at work all day, is like having an option in life to hear and be somewhere else.
Teamo, Andrea Bocelli .......2007-03-08
One of his best. Need the lyrics translated from the Italian to the English inside the casing next time. Nonetheless, Mr. Bocelli has a beautiful voice. It made my wife and all my female co-workers swoon when they listened to it.
A new style from Andrea........2007-02-24
There were some ugly songs in here.(I absolutely hate to say that about anything Andrea.)But the good far outshone the bad.
Un Nouvo Giorno stunned me the first time I heard it.It was so unlike anything I had heard from Andrea- very pop.But it soon grew on me.
Liberta is amazing.Very catchy and upbeat.
Sempre O Mai is my favorite. It keeps its tempo up and has the best of Andrea and pop.Great song.
So this album was really a double album with pop and classical songs interspersed.A good mix from the master.
Not happy with delivery (or non delivery) of this item.......2007-01-16
When I ordered this on 12/04/2006 they said I would have it before Christmas. Then right before Christmas the delivery date was changed to mid-January. So I had to cancel my order and go, at the last minute, buy it at a store because it was a Christmas present. I wasn't happy about it and won't be buying from amazon for the holidays any longer.

DG has put together a fascinating compilation of Segovia's art that reminds us what a protean figure he was. Segovia single-handedly put the instrument on the map by making classical guitar concerts popular events, broadening the instrument's repertory through commissions and transcriptions, and convincing even doubters that it could be a vehicle for serious music. He's heard here in brief pieces recorded between 1952 and 1969. Even in those made when he was well into his 70s, his fingers remain nimble and interpretations lively. Listening straight through, one hears many all-time Segovia favorites as Turina's Sevillana and Albeniz's Asturias and Zambra Granadina and renews appreciation for path-breaking composers like Castelnuovo-Tedesco. He wrote extensively for Segovia and his Capriccio diabolico and Tonadilla are pieces of real substance. Disc two is largely made up transcriptions and it's amazing how well so many of them work on the guitar, at least under Segovia's magic fingers. Thus the transformations of Bach's violin music and even a Chopin Prelude sound idiomatic, and the gorgeous melodies of the Canzonetta from Mendelssohn's Op. 12 String Quartet are irresistible here. An entrancing set. --Dan Davis

A Man and His Art - Magnificently Captured.......2007-04-06
This 2-CD set produced by Deutche Grammmophon and first released in 2002 is one set of the hundreds that could have been or the dozens that actually have been made and sold successfully all over the world. The exceptional feature of this particular collection is not, of course, the performer. Quite to the contrary, the miraculous consistency of stylings and performance are amongst the most remarkable aspects of the man who was, arguably, the 20th Centry's virtuoso supreme of the classical guitar, Andres Segovia (1893-1987.) Rather, it is the collection itself - the pieces chosen to be produced on this one set - this, to steal a German word, gestalt. While his style did not remain constant throughout his long life and career, by the time he had developed his most masterful skills that included doing his own arrangements - the era represented on this particular set (1951-1960) - his playing had become completely his own - unchallenged and unmatched by even other clearly great guitarists with whom he shared this era.
There are a total of 31 pieces played on these CDs and while a playlist would be an unnecessary use of space here, a list of the composers represented is not. More than the specific pieces Segovia gives us here, the range of composers chosen by the compilers and editors - with each piece rearranged by Segovia himself, tells us a great deal about his interests, talents and musical range. These composers include:
Isaac Albeniz, Johann Sebastian Bach, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Frederic Chopin, Claude Debussy, John Dowland, Manuel de Falla, Cesar Franke, Girolamo Frescobaldi, Edvard Grieg, George Frederic Handel, Felix Mendelsohn, Frederico Moreno Torroba, Modest Mussorgsky, Nicolo Paganini, Felipe Pedrell, Manuel Ponce, Jean-Philippe Rameau, Joaquin Rodrigo, Albert Roussel, Domenico Scarlatti, Alexander Scriabin, Segovia's own composition of Estudio sin luz, Fernando Sor, Francisco Tarrega, Joaquin Turina and Heitor Villa-Lobos. A truly magnificent and broad ranging collection held together by Segovia's unique personal style, approach and sound.
Largely self-taught, Andres Segovia did things with a guitar that others only imagined. He didn't just play Bach, for example - music written for an entirely different type of instrument (keyboards.) He went a step further, and recorder Bach's keyboard lessons written for his students (the Two and Three Part Inventions) and made them sound as if they had been written for the guitar! His artistry is evident to even the casual listener and in this collection, any devote of classical guitar and/or of Segovia as an individual artist, will not be disappointed.
Perfect listening for anytime. Hypnotic and, simply, unsurpassed. A necessary addition to any serious classical guitar collection.
What can you say - it's Segovia!.......2007-02-10
I saw Segovia perform live in my youth. What a treat! Anyone who loves Classical Guitar should love this collection.
EVERYBODY KNOWS.......2007-01-13
EVERYBODY KNOWS THAT ANDRES SEGOVIA WAS/IS THE WORLD'S GREATEST CLASSICAL GUITAR PLAYER. THIS CD IS A COMPILATION OF HIS RECORDINGS FROM THE THE EARLY 50'S TO THE LATE 60'S. HIS GUITAR MASTERY IS UNQUESTIONED AND HE IS AN INSPIRATION. I WISH I COULD PLAY GUITAR LIKE ANDRES SEGOVIA (BUT I CAN'T AND I NEVER WILL!).
Immortal guitar.......2006-08-02
Two CD's with Segovia's immortal music - an incredible treat at a great price!
WOW.......2006-02-23
Even though there is hiss from the original analog recordings this one is a must. Segovia! What more can you say. Anyone who likes classical guitar will love this.

Customer Reviews:
the sad truth is..........2007-07-02
i am an ozzy superfan and own ALL of his solo albums and most of his stuff from his Black Sabbath days. sadly this album is the one that sucks the most out of them all. i mean one of his albums has to be the worst and this one is unfortunately it. ya ultimate sin and shot in the dark are great tracks but the rest is mostly filler material. if you want to know what ozzy is really about and what he represents pick up bark at the moon, diary of a madman and blizzard of ozz. these were ozzy's defining moments in rock n' roll. also get tribute to hear a true guitar wizard (randy rhoads; ozzy's all time best guitarist) put on a live guitar clinic. then get the no more tears album which is an EXCELLENT work (featuring guitarist zakk wylde).
This album shouldn't be disregarded as the worst!!!.......2007-06-17
I am not a huge Ozzy fan but want to make things straightened out.
Allmusic.com, which people refer to often, grades this awesome album below mediocre. The critque seems to target the general hair rock of mid 80's. This album has everything to constitute a great hevey metal music, except for solid chemistry between Ozzy and Jake.
In fact, Ozzy's voice does not impress me as usual but the guitar blows my mind. Here in the Ultimate Sin, Jake E. Lee explodes his anger in his playing, the most agressive and heaviest guitar among Ozzy's albums. Jake deserves better than what people said about this album.
BLAME MOTLEY CREWS 1985s "THEATRE OF PAIN" I MEAN SHAME, FOR THIS ILL CONCIEVED SIN..................2007-06-16
The line up in 1985,1986: Ozzy Osbourne: vocals, Jake E.Lee: Guitar, Phil Soussan: Bass Guitar, Randy Castillo: Drums. Great lineup, there is no question about it. I bought this recording on vinyl in Feb. 1986, hoping for a great record to follow the awesome successes of Blizzard 1980, Diary 1981, Bark 1983. I was very dissapointed with The Ultimate sin. The reason for my opinion is not the great band lineup Ozzy had with this record, it was that Ozzy decided to go glam rock like bands of the mid to late 1980s. Motley Crews first two records were great, Crews debut album: 1982s "Too Fast For Love", 1983s "Shout At The Devil" they stuck to hard crisp rock, metal. Then "Theatre Of Pain" came out in the summer of 1985, which was a total Crue sellout to glam rock and softer music. Even Crews dress style made me realize they sold out to the Glam rock which would dictate 1980s rock bands. "Theatre Of Pain" was a total turn from Crews first two albums when they cared about thier music and not making "Smokin In The Boys Room" remake. I remember after listening to the vinyl of "Theatre Of Pain" for the first time, that day in July 1985, and being totally amazed how the Crew sold out thier music and thier early fans. From that day on I refer to "Theatre Of Pain" as "Theatre Of Shame". I mention "Theatre of Pain", because I believe when Ozzy got out of the rehab and got his life back together in 1985, he saw the Glam rock image Motley Crew had with "Theatre Of Pain" and figured this will be an image he would go with, with "The Ultimate Sin". I really believe "Theatre Of Pain" influenced "The Ultimate Sin" that is the reason for its soft glam rock style. I will say Jake E Lees guitaring on "Sin" is awesome. Phil Soussan does a really good job on bass guitar, Randy Castillo handles the drums well, my only complaint is I wish the drums on "Sin" were a little harder, to me they are softer and don't sound right on an Ozzy recording. If Ozzy went the glam rock look and sound, what a horrible mistake he made with "The Ultimate Sin". I wonder if the iron maiden herself Sharon Osbourne advised Ozzy to the glam rock style just so Ozzy could keep up with the times in the mid 1980s and keep the cash register flowing for the Osbournes. The band lineup is great, it is just a shame it had to be wasted on this ill concieved effort. I have listened to "The Ultimate Sin" many times and after 21 years this recording has not grown on me. "The Ultimate Sin" is a pure sellout of the mid 1980s glam rock invasion. The song Ozzy hates the most is the song I like and the best on "The Ultimate Sin" that is "Shot In The Dark". That is part of the reason I bought "The Ultimate Sin" the other reason was it was Ozzy. I had a friend who I was in high school with who did not care for "The Ultimate Sin", saw Ozzy with Metallica on tour in April 1986 and he told me The Ultimate Sin sounded great live. Metallica was still pumping out great metal in those days with the 1986 metal epic "Master of Puppets", before they bit the sellout mode with their 1991 black album and have continued since. I even like Ozzy releases from 1988s "No Rest For the Wicked", 2007s "Black Rain"(No Rest for the Wicked (Exp), (Black Rain), better than "The Ultimate Sin". I will always love the Ozzman, but "The Ultimate Sin" is by far the Ozzmans worst. That is why many people bash this recording. I believe Ozzy did hate "Ultimate Sin" that is why he came back with a vegence with his next two releases 1988s "No Rest For The Wicked" and 1991s "No More Tears". Ozzy went back to what made him great with these two afore mentioned releases. Those readers who like "The Ultimate Sin" I do respect your views on this recording and learn from them negative or positive. I'm giving "The Ultimate Sin" two stars only because it is Ozzy and because of the great band lineup, and the great Jake E. Lee, and of course "Shot In The Dark".
Jake E Lee.......2007-05-30
I love this album because here you can listen the greatest guitar player of the world, Mr. JAKE E LEE!

Chicagoan Oscar Brown Jr. stormed his way to early '60s prominence with the Columbia debut album that provides the bulk of this satisfying collection. A lush, nimble baritone and a keen sense of his identity as an African American made Sin & Soul a triumphant calling card, its range of characters and narratives going far beyond the usual canon of romantic pop covers, as Brown dug into the knotty experience of black America, a volatile prospect in 1960 when the original version of the album was cut. It's not a stretch to argue that tracks like "But I Was Cool," his hilarious portrait of a clueless loser, or "Bid 'Em In," a riveting slave auctioneer's patter, prefigured rap, but Brown also delivers shuffles, tender ballads, and theatrical set pieces, some reworking solid instrumentals from Bobby Timmons, Herbie Hancock, Mongo Santamaria, and Bobby Bryant. From the tender paternal pride of "Dat Dere" to the teeth-gritting chain gang anthem, "Work Song," the set remains a classic, sensuous, vibrantly moral, funny, and tragic. --Sam Sutherland

I was a kid looking up at being a teenager when I first experienced `Sin & Soul.' In fact, it was the sudden retrieval of an up-til-then forgotten memory that made me wish madly that I could find a copy of this Oscar Brown, Jr. classic.
The album (yes, it was and always will be the album I remember and hear) was my big sister's. I wore out that record more listening to it more than she did until I had every word of every lyric memorized. The magic was that you do not memorize the lyrics of what Oscar Brown, Jr. has compiled here - you feel them, deep within you. From the first time I heard `Chain Gang' I visualized with crystal clarity not what being on the chain gang was like, but why the person in the song was on the chain gang in the first place. And I was the kid asking the wild questions of `What Dat Dere?'
I can never think about `Signifyin' Monkey; I always see and act out the play that the story is revealing to me. It was a long time that I was even conscious that neither Oscar Brown, Jr. nor I were singing the song with a straight voice, but with character voices. That's how vivid that song is.
"Watermelon Man" brings up images from my days of summer vacations with my Chicago cousins as we visited our aunt and cousins in St. Louis. `Rags and Old Iron' was one of my St. Louis aunt's neighbors: a very sweet but lonely older lady who sat out on the front porch most of the day and into the night. Oscar Brown Jr.'s depiction of the slave trade hits me more deeply than seeing his images come to life in the TV miniseries "Roots." I think I learned a lesson without knowing it from the desperate, life-weary old man in `Somebody Buy Me a Drink.'
It will always be difficult to categorize `Sin & Soul.' It defies pigeon holing. Oscar Brown Jr. displays a diversity here that is part poetry, folk, jazz, blues, and plain ol' singer-songwriter. The arrangements are not fancy but even as a musician who has arranged a lot of music, I cannot imagine touching any of `Sin & Soul.' Some things are just perfect as they are, even 40 years later.
`Sin & Soul' is one of those musical experiences that makes your soul cry out that everyone needs to listen to this and feel it and get into it and understand it and enjoy it. I wish it could get more exposure to more people. If you haven't heard `Sin & Soul,' you need to. I wish Oscar were still around....
A Jazz Phenomenon.......2006-12-22
Oscar Brown Jr was one of a kind. A wonderful baritone voice, a wonderful way with words, a historian's eye for what was going on and a journalist's eye for reporting. He was fully as much the voice of the 60s as Dylan, only he sang better, and he did swing. Oh my did he swing. My all time favorite album was Between Heaven and Hell, but that hasn't been rereleased as yet. Two songs from that album are here, though. Mr Kicks and World Full of Gray. He felt the Black experience, but I'm not Black and I loved his songs. One fantastic song I haven't heard since the 60s is Elegy. Oscar Brown Jr will be missed. Buy this CD before someone realizes that it's meaningful music and takes it off the market.
If you think you understand SOUL!.......2006-11-07
If you think you understand SOUL, and you havent listened to Oscar, then you havent a clue!!!!
Barbara's review.......2005-07-20

Great Double CD.......2007-03-09
I really enjoyed this double CD. It showed me the roots of a lot 70's California Rock groups. You also can see an evolution between the 1st and 2nd CD.
One of Gram's best paired with a solid release on one CD.......2006-12-22
Gilded Palace of Sin is right up there with Sweetheart of the Rodeo and GP as the best of Gram Parsons' work. This disc presents that album alongside the Bros' second, less transcendent album, Burrito Deluxe. Both albums find Gram doing his thing as usual--country rock when Parsons was the most original name in the game, with some interesting arrangements and usually upper-end songwriting.
The first album included here is a classic, and the main reason for purchasing the CD. A lot of critics say that The Gilded Palace of Sin is Gram's best work ever. It doesn't really matter to me which album of his is ranked as #1--it's pretty arbitrary. No matter which is his very best, it's a really great album. Gram's songwriting (often with the aid of Hillman) is really strong here--from uptempo songs like the opener, "Christine's Song" and the scathing draft-dodging "My Uncle" to midtempo grinders like "Sin City" and "Wheels" (a personal favorite. He's got a knack for fusing genuine country with rock elements and providing some earnest lyrics that often bear his unique, characteristic wit and charm. Covers are well-chosen too; the two R&B tunes, "Do Right Woman" and "Dark End of the Street" fit right in with the straight up country. The two "Hot Burrito" songs are also two of the best, most emotional cuts on this album.
Parsons' sometimes thin voice sounds really good here--he sounds the best when he's singing a well-written song, conjuring a lot of moving emotion (you don't have to have the best voice, as long as you can sing like you really mean it). One of the best things about this album is the arrangements--not only is there some great pedal steel for those hardcore country fans, there's some tasteful keyboards and some real gnarly fuzzed-out electric guitar that lend this album a really unique sound and add a touch of almost psychedelia to the mix. It really adds to the classic status of this one, in my opinion. I can't forget to mention the closing track, a call for peace between hippies and country squares alike, with great spoken-word in the style of many country artists. None of this would work or sound authentic if Gram Parsons didn't really have his heart in it--his genuine delivery prevents the music from seeming tongue-in-cheek. The first album alone is reason enough to buy this CD and I heartily recommend it.
Burrito Deluxe definitely flags in quality in comparison with its predecessor. The songs aren't quite as good--"Older Guys" just seems kind of like a brainless fraternity romp, and "Image of Me" and "God's Own Singer" just aren't very convincingly written or performed (Gram doesn't really sound quite into it). "Lazy Days" is much better as a bonus track on Sweetheart of the Rodeo. The covers aren't that great either; "If You Gotta Go" is awkwardly arranged and "Wild Horses," even though the Bros released it before the Stones, drags quite a bit, especially for an album closer. I don't want to rag on it too much, though--the playing is still pretty good, with skillful pedal steel and a solid rhythm section. When Gram is into it ("Farther Along" and "Cody Cody," for example) it approaches the band's superior debut. Unfortunately, the noticeably lackluster songwriting and energy, combined with marginal sound (I was surprised how different the two albums sound in quality on the same CD) makes Burrito Deluxe definitely not an essential release. Fortunately, they're both on the same CD, so Burrito Deluxe works great as a bonus for the iconic Gilded Palace. I strongly recommend this CD and hope you enjoy it!
Great music at a bargain price.......2006-10-07
Sometimes there is justice in this world. The fact that the Flying Burrito Brothers' music is alive and well at the beginning of the new millenium bodes well for all of us. They were not well known back in 1969 and the early 70s. Their very brief time alloted to them in the film "Gimme Shelter" is indicative of their status in the world of popular music at the time. While they still may not sell a lot of records even today, at least their reputation as great musicians and as a talented group remains intact, and, if anything has grown with time. This collection has all the songs from their first two albums, which, to be truthful, are the only essential recordings by the Burritos. These recordings coincide with the tenure of the very talented singer/songwriter Gram Parsons, who is a legend today. Chris Hillman's contribution to the Burritos are often slighted, but he was a full partern with Parsons in the creation, playing, singing, and songwriting for the group. One could argue that the ying/yang of Parsons/Hillman, trading off roles of wild-emotional/calm-restrained really made the group what it is. They had talented collaborators, too, with the late, great Sneaky Pete on steel guitar, Chris Etheridge on bass for the first album, and Bernie Leaden on guitar for the second. Michael Clarke, like Hillman and Parsons a former member of the Byrds, provided the drumming on the second album. My only complaint about this collection is that the songs are not in the original order, but that's a minor complaint for this well-price offering.
Gram Parsons-The father of Country-Rock!.......2006-10-05
The first album is very mellow with great harmonies. It sounds like Buck Owens early in his career with the "freight train" songs combined with the late '60s Buck Owens and the finger picking of Don Rich with examples from "Where Does the Good Times Go" "How Long Will My Baby Be Gone" "Sweet Rosie Jones" "I've Got You On My Mind Again" and "Tall Dark Stranger." The second album has more variety from gospel to polka to a Bill Anderson-type song to old school honky tonk. What I mean is "Farther Along" "Man in the Fog" "High Fashion Queen" and "If You Gotta Go." These two albums really knocked me out musically speaking. I wish Country Music now sounded more like this. Really enjoyed it!
Walking the line.......2006-08-11
This two-fer CD gives consumers the opportunity to purchase remastered versions of the first two releases by this seminal band from the late 1960's at a ridiculously affordable price. The two discs were released in 1968 ('Gilded Palace of Sin') and 1969 ('Burrito Deluxe'), and in their later incarnation, the artists involved composed 3/5 of what was once known as 'The Byrds' (guitarist, keyboardist, and vocalist Gram Parsons, drummer Michael Clarke, and bassist and vocalist Chris Hillman). This band is often credited with pioneering the Country-Rock genre, although those kudo's must certainly be shared with Roger McGuinn's Byrds and Buffalo Springfield, and myriad other bands who dabbled in the effort. The Flying Burrito Brothers, however, certainly embraced the new, unfolding sound unlike any predecessor. Unfortunately, since youth culture was still thoroughly immersed in the sounds of acid-rock and the emerging heavy-metal genre, devoting entire albums to country-rock spelled disaster for the FBB's. Their debut album sold only 50,000 copies.
Featuring two rhythm guitarists, a steel pedal guitar, and a bassist, along with four session drummers, 'Gilded Palace...' was inclined to sound like nothing previously known in rock parlance. The band walked the line between country and rock, more often emphasizing the country in tunes such as 'Do Right Woman', with it's tight harmonies and sweet steel guitar courtesy of Sneeky Pete Kleinow, and 'Do You Know How It Feels'. Most of the lyrics pursue traditional country music themes, such as love lost ('Hot Burrito #1) with it's Byrd-like chiming guitar sound, or religion, such as a trio of songs from 'Burrito Deluxe', 'Farther Along' ("we'll all understand it in the by and by"), 'God's Own Singer', and 'In the Churchyard'. The Burrito's could be musically adventurous, of course, and such fare can be spotted in tracks such as 'Christine's Tune', which sounds like a precursor to the Eagles' 'Lyin' Eyes', 'My Uncle', an upbeat celebration of draft evasion, which seemingly misappropriates the traditional patriotic sentiments of country music. Two songs resonate with melodies reminicent of Neil Young's 'Old Country Waltz' from his 'American Stars & Bars' album ('Sin City' and 'Image of Me'), while 'Dark End of the Street' and 'Older Guys' (with a massive, pounding bass line from Hillman) sound Eagle-ish. And when listening to 'Juanita', see if you can't hear strains of 'I Like the Christian Life' simmering beneath.
Instrumentally, the Burrito Brothers could be experimental as well. On 'Wheels', a song not surprisingly about goin' mobile, Gram Parsons makes intriguing use of the synthesizer to extract an oversided growl, enlarging on the traditional country sounds supporting it. On 'Hippie Boy', the largely spoken lyrics meander around a dialog between a redneck and a hippie, with the apparent moral of the tale being, "never carry more than you can eat". The shortest track on the disc is the 1:48 cover of Bob Dylan's bouncy 'If You Gotta Go', featuring a rare electric guitar lead from Bernie Leadon, while the longest track (6:20) is the closer, another cover, this time of the Mick Jagger/Keith Richards composition, 'Wild Horses'. The FBB version is not radically different from, nor better or worse than the Stones' version... which is a compliment in itself. 'Man In the Fog' is unique for Leon Russell's piano and accordian-driven melody. One of my favorite Chris Hillman compositions, 'Hot Burrito #2', is given a restrained and lavished production here, which veils it's potential as a great rock and roll number (try to catch a version of this in the able hands of Stephen Stills and Manassas, with Chris on lead vocals... it's a very hot burrito!).
'Gilded Palace of Sin' and 'Burrito Deluxe' possess a historical and musical value that add significant clout to their merit as an artistic piece. Probably half the tunes offered spur associations to classic country-rock excursions that would follow by bands such as Stills' Manassas and the Eagles, and it's fascinating in itself to hear "where it all began". The quality of the musicianship is also without question. The only shortcoming is that some of the music, while revolutionary in the hands of rock and roller's in their prime, is nothing more than traditional country music. Had the band tilted just a bit more in favor of their rock roots, these albums would not only have sold better, but also played better. These are essential recordings for anyone favoring the work of the latter day Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, and artists such as Bob Dylan, Stephen Stills, and the Eagles.

Pleasant but Lightweight.......2005-07-22
A friend recently decided to thin out her huge CD collection, and she offered me my pick of the ones she was donating to charity. I grabbed this one, because I had fond memories of the song "What You Won't Do For Love" from the late '70s. I like this album, but I can see why I might wind up giving it away after a few years.
Caldwell's music is soulful and pleasant, but there's a lightweight quality to it. The melodies are catchy but forgettable, and the lyrics tend to be sugary and banal. Caldwell is a good singer, and his phrasing and timbre are reminiscent of Stevie Wonder, but Caldwell's songs have none of the sexual or socio-political edge or emotional depth of Wonder or other great soul artists.
Having said that, this album is solid easy listening fare. The song "What You Won't Do" stands the test of time as a distinctive pop soul classic. Other good songs include the ballads "My Flame" and "Take Me Back to Then." If you enjoy light, breezy pop soul, you'll probably like this CD.
You can't miss out on music like this!.......2004-12-24
This one that made it big for Bobby Caldwell. It's orignally titled "Bobby Caldwell" but was forced to change it due 2 total reasons. Can't say much about it, this is a good album that anybody who wants to hear good music 'cuz my dad said he's was once discovered by Barry White. Everybody should know that the title song to this CD is a all-time favorite slow jam one that would go on years to come.
I recommend u should buy this instead of a hip-hop/rap album I used to buy all the time.
No one should live without this!
some great stuff here, but simply not enough.......2004-11-22
This 1978 album was Bobby Caldwell's first--I believe it was originally a self-titled effort, and that the title was changed to "What You Won't Do for Love" when the song of the same name became a hit. There is some great stuff here, but unfortunately, it seems that Caldwell just didn't have enough material and/ or was in a hurry to meet a deadline, because there is a considerable amount of blatant filler, including overlong fades, & the album runs less than 35 minutes in the first place. Also, the lyrics are often very slight. He's clearly in disco territory on a couple songs--the album opening "Special To Me" is way too sugary, but the wonderfully melodic "Love Won't Wait" is an irresistible, somewhat jazz-flavored tune. The smooth, wistful soft rock ballad "My Flame" is captivating with great hooks, but there are a couple really weak ballads as well with the ridiculously sappy "Come To Me", and "Take Me Back To Then" which is a song about wanting to be a kid again and has a very annoyingly overblown lead vocal. Plus, the funk-flavored love ballad "Can't Say Goodbye" is really let down by the overwrought vocals, lame lyrics, & the excessive, overlong fade. The super mellow album closer "Down For The Third Time" has cool, jazzy guitar, & it's an infectiously catchy tune, but it has a fade that's really long, really repetitive, and really dull. He also slips in an instrumental fragment "Kalimba Song"--it's less than a minute & 1/2 long & fades out so abruptly that it leaves you with an undeniable "What, that's it?" feeling. There's no denying though that the soulful title track is a classic--it's got a great horn riff, cool orchestration, an ultra-catchy melody, & Caldwell's vocals on it are terrific--he sounds quite similar to Stevie Wonder, but without the annoyingly overdone 'show-biz' mannerisms that Wonder has a tendency to indulge in; this song also has a very long fade, but this time it's to nice effect--it's got a nice contemplative, atmospheric feel to it. In the end, the album is a heck of a mixed bag--it's a shame, because the best stuff demonstrates that Caldwell was capable of a masterpiece. As it is, this is still worth getting if you see it for a low price--there is some must-have material on here that makes the album worth having.
Torch Songs, Bobby's Way.......2004-10-31
Unrequited love can't get the best of you lovers out there -- that is, not if this sublime CD is part of your pop/R&B collection. I have the original CD of this set of songs, titled "Bobby Caldwell," and I love kicking back to listen to it when I'm feeling a bit haunted by ghosts, uh, lovers of the past.
My first time hearing "What You Won't Do for Love" was the morning of Valentine's Day on a Top 40 radio station. The DJ announced Bobby Caldwell's name excitedly, and I remember being puzzled because I had never heard of the singer before that day. I probably was late for school because Bobby Caldwell's smooth, soulful vocals blending with the Earth, Wind & Fire-influenced groove had me hypnotized in the middle of my room. Not since Deniece Williams' "Free," released the previous year, had I received such an exquisite lesson in adult-themed romance and intimacy.
As an adult, I love to imagine that Caldwell is crooning to me when I listen to slow cuts like "My Flame" and "Down for the Third Time." I also admire his fast-tempo tracks, but on the slow songs Caldwell gives a nod to Sinatra in his ability to transport the listener to a cozy jazz club setting. It's just Bobby and I, and he's onstage leaning down with the microphone toward me while I sit there blushing at the table-for-one -- ahem, sorry, I guess I got caught up in the moment.
While "What You Won't Do for Love" holds a special place in my memory, "My Flame" has become my favorite in recent years. On that track, the wistful kalimba and guitar pluck on the heartstrings while Caldwell interprets what could be any of our romantic experiences. For example, how many of us still have that "picture on the shelf" (or in the attic or closet -- but not buried there)? And how many of us wish we had a personal time machine that would allow us to demand to that former lover: "Tell me you still want me"? Just listen to the way Bobby Caldwell turns mellifluous on the word "flame" in the last refrain and you'll understand why he's a master of the torch song.
A final word about "My Flame": It has endurance not only in the minds of Caldwell's longtime fans but also in the music industry. Only a few years back, I got chills upon hearing Vanessa L. Williams' alluring cover of the song. (Only one of her greatest-hits collections includes "My Flame," so check out the track listing carefully.) It doesn't matter whether it was her decision or her record label's to record it, but she personified Desire in a way that probably made Caldwell proud -- royalties aside.
As for the midtempo "Down for the Third Time," Caldwell sounds as hip as ever singing about love and independence. The song's melodic ending, with its descending chord progression and Caldwell's undulating "oohs" and "ohs," is so infectious that you'll regret not having programmed the track back-to-back on your CD player.
This guy is a genius..........2004-02-09

Not Essential, But Also Not Dreadful.......2005-08-20
Let's face it, fans of the artist: While NIN has a lot of worthy material, the "Pretty Hate Machine" singles were only made for completists. Where others sometimes had authentic B-sides/covers, and actual interesting remixes, this was from a time when "interesting" and "remix" were an oxymoron.
I'm not a big fan of remixes, and I'll admit that the majority of the rest of the disc is very average, especially coming from NIN. "Get Down Make Love" raises the thing up a star. It's a pretty good cover of Queen that does not try to ape Queen. This song is the only thing that most people usually mention on the single, too. There are also three uninteresting remixes of "Sin", but I sort of like that "dub" mix. It's nice to think of "Sin" as a dub song. I am not a purist who hates this song being turned into a dance song, as I think it could have been worse. But if you must buy a single from this era, I must direct you to "Head Like a Hole". "The Downward Spiral" era was the only real time when the singles were worth owning, save the occasional exception. Besides, if you bought it, well... you bought it and it's there for something. And having just 4 tracks cannot be too bad.
SIN.......2005-06-14
Not much to say, three bad-ass mixes of "sin" plus a cover of some....Also if u dont already, PHM , DWN SPRL , FRGL , BRKN , ....
A lot of waste, but get it for "Get Down Make Love".......2005-05-25
This is a tough single for me, as I think virtually every review of this points out-- really, its quite the weakest of the "Pretty Hate Machine" era Nine Inch Nails single, primarily because of how awful the "Sin" remixes are, but in the midst of this is the, "Get Down Make Love".
The "Sin" mixes first though, remixed by Adrian Sherwood and Keith LeBlanc, who did a fine job with "Down In It", this song really doesn't match their techno beat restructuring, and in fact the aggression of the song is pretty much swallowed up in a programmed beat and irritating synth effects. The short version at least has the good sense to be brief, the dub mix carries on for several minutes with samples of "LIES" and "CONTROL" lifted from the song-- essentially five minutes of ok beats and really irritating synths. The long version feels somewhat better but is more or less the short version with part of the dub version spliced in the middle of it. The three mixes as a whole are totally unengaging and can be skipped.
But "Get Down Make Love" though, this is the great missing early Nine Inch Nails piece, produced by Al Jourgenson, Reznor takes a fantastic Queen song and restructures it into his own vision, staying true to the original but at the same time fully claiming it as his own. The result is tense, exciting, and extremely well done, and really is worth the price of the single.
My rating however is on the whole product, and as a whole, there's not much here, but that "Get Down Make Love" take is fantastic. If you've got the albums, dig this up for that track alone.
It's too much!.......2005-05-18
This Nine Inch Nails single features three remixes of "Sin". All three mixes are good. Even the dub version is interesting, unlike most dub versions of songs. But the thing that makes this CD a must-get for Nine Inch Nails fans is the cover version of Queen's "Get Down Make Love". It's really quite good.

A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10
Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.
a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15
I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

A Different View.......2007-06-09
This CD set, probably more than any other product released, reveals more of the personality and charm of Jeff while interacting with the audience, and more importantly, shows his passion and emotion for the music he plays. Listeners familiar with the songs released on the Grace album will find them re-presented in a new, but certainly not diminished, light. Some songs in particular that show their more sentimental sides are "Eternal Life", "Grace", and "Lover, You Should've Come Over".
This is an exquisite representation of Jeff's talent and charisma. A must have.
Back to the beginning... .......2007-05-01
I had the EP when it came out. I was floored when I heard it... "one guy"???
He's another "sing the telephone book and it would sound awesome".
My opinion is this: he wasn't intending to release the whole thing when he had the tapes rolling, but was capturing his cafe days "in the moment" before he started playing larger venues (although theaters were the norm for him and a few festivals). This was a place he served coffee at AND played his heart out.
It is funny to hear his swipes at the then current "grunge scene" and then going into all these different styles that cover the spectrum of the 20th century, not just in America but internationally. You could tell he was already fighting being pigeonholed, not just in with Nirvana and Pearl Jam but his own father. If you see the music videos it just seemed like one of those mandatory things that he would rather not have done. Jimmy Page and Robert Plant among others became huge fans. One would've hoped he would've done his father's "Song to the Siren" when he recorded this.
I can't believe how much material was recorded, and this is probably 1% of the songs he knew.
I think Mary's (his mom) paced the releases out nicely. This year the limited release movie about Jeff is supposed to be on home video.
This blows.......2006-06-29
I am a fan of him and Grace is still one of the best cds of the 90s but this sure does blow. His voice is mostly awful on this. I especially dont like those very long covers he does on here. The way young lovers do does not need to be 10 minutes with a bunch of annoying sounds. The listable songs on here are the short ones . The reason Grace was good is becasue it was well produced and his voice was more polish. It surprised me that this thing averages 5 stars on amazon. If he did not die young this cd would not even seen the light of day. I am so glad i did not buy this i found it at the libary. This show's you how awful this cd is this thing retails for 30.00 yet i found it at a libary.
Indescribable........2006-05-03
I got this 2-disc set for Christmas. Having been only a mediocre fan of Jeff Buckley before, I was unsure what to expect, but even before the first CD had ended, I was in pure awe.
Jeff Buckley weilds his guitar with a loving ferocity that most guitarists can only dream of. His unique and tantalizing voice flows through the music he plays. It says in his book that Jeff's renditions of cover songs (and indeed, some of his original creations as well) were never the same, and that each performance was vastly different from all the others.
But the renditions he does in this recording are virtually flawless and even turned me on to artists I hadn't previously given a chance. Even Buckley's cover of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" on his "Grace" release pales in comparison to the live recording of it on this set.
Many reviewers are labeling this a great "historical document," but I must protest. This is not an historical document that captures an intimate performance of a short-live, underrated artist. This is an indescribable record evidencing the beauty and unsurpassed talent of a man who died before his time, but certainly not before he came into his own as a guitarist, singer, performer, and even songwriter.
Beautiful in every way!
soul boy.......2006-04-27
I could write something similar to this about any Jeff Buckley album, but instead of going through them all and repeating myself, I'll just say a lot here.
Jeff Buckley, for me, has always been one of those draw-a-line-in-the-sand artists. A sort of test, like; love Buckley (and we can be friends) or hate him (and you will be buried in the back garden with the others).
I first saw him when I was 15, at Glastonbury festival. At the time, all I can remember thinking was "wow, he can sing high". Since then, of course, JB has gone on to be one of the biggest and most sorely missed 'cult' artists of our time.
I was faintly worried about this whole 'Legacy Edition' thing, it seemed at first another way of wringing some more $$$ out of the tiny body of Buckley's work.
Do I really need another SLIGHTLY different version of Hallelujah? I asked myself.
The answer is, of course, yes, yes, yes, buy it, for God's sake. There are 21 tracks here, as well as between-song chatter (although these are called 'monologues' on the CD track listing- one 'monologue' entitled Good Night Bill goes like this-
JB- "Good night, Bill"
... and then the next song starts.)
However, most of them are often really funny- a sufi interpretation of Smells Like Teen Spirit, and a one man impression of Miles Davis'[...]Brew being particular highlights.
And, of course, THAT voice, THAT electric guitar, THOSE songs.
This is the man on his own, browsing through his own tunes and covers he loves, twisting, bending and whipping them into a frenzy. Strange Fruit as hard, stabbing blues. Just Like A Woman becomes a whispered lament over soft slide guitar. Calling You, from the film Baghdad Cafe, is as powerful and otherworldly as what has almost become his signature piece, Hallelujah (also featured here; a majestic, rage-against-the-dying-of-the-light version).
SO! The point is, there are SO FEW truly original, talented and affecting artists available in the mainstream... and Jeff Buckley is one of them. You owe it to yourself. You owe it to your children, and your children's children's children to have something like this in the house. Buy his album. Buy all his albums.
...Actually, I'm definitely not sure whether to get the Grace Legacy Edition. But thats more because I already own Forget Her- The Song Jeff Didn't Want You To Hear....
