4 out of 5 stars Newbies to Dir en Grey be warned.......2005-08-16

I love Dir en Grey and adore this album, but I will tell you I had mininul exposure to their music when I heard this album and I was nearly scarred away from the band. After listening to it over and over (as well as hearing other singles), this album grew on me and I now love it.

Those that are new to Dir en Grey SHOULD NOT listen to this album first. It is extremely dark, hardcore and can be a it disturbing. Though some may be able to handle it, it's best to listen to the Macrabe or Vulgar albums to get a better taste of their style first before sixUGLY.

I still highly reccomend this album- especially if you're really upset and need mood music. This album's perfect. ^_^

4 out of 5 stars Eeep. Scary........2005-05-09

This album... really scared me. But I've gotten used to it, and being a diehard Diru fan, I can't help but love it. The album definitely has a very "western" flair to it; waaaay more than on Vulgar or Withering to death. Six Ugly is like... it's a random album. Where did it come from? Why did they make it? Has Kaoru had too many cashews? All good questions that don't have an answer. Mr. NEWSMAN is catchy and very... dare i say... Linkin-Park-esque *cringe* There's a bit of rapping on this album too. And they re-did Byo Shin & Children. The New ByoShin is better than the old; though it gives me more of a headache. Children was better on Macabre, I think. This ver is too much like rap. But still, I like listening to it. Kyo's voice is basically enough to make buy anything... It's just so damn sexy to listen to. ANYWAY, if you're a Diru fan who can handle their "western" sound, buy this. If you hate Vulgar & Wtd, you'll probably hate this even more. And if you're a new fan... don't go for this quite yet. Diru is a tough band to get into right a away; I would reccomend trying Gauze if you like more glassy sounding indies rock and Withering to Death if you prefer heavy metal.

4 out of 5 stars six Ugly American-sounding tracks?.......2004-12-31

This mini-album made so many Dir en grey fans rethink their dedication to the band. Many complained it was too American-sounding and were glad when they "fixed" their sound in VULGAR (or were horrified when they "made it worse" in VULGAR).

As much as I absolutely love VULGAR, six Ugly simply isn't the horrible piece of junk many deem it to be. It has a great opening with Mr.NEWSMAN, and until I watched their 2003 final tour 5Ugly KINGDOM, I didn't pay much attention to children or Byo" "Shin (track 6).
A side note on Byo" "Shin, this is a second version of the song, as they released an earlier version of this song years ago in their very first mini-album, Missa. I prefer this six Ugly version, but the early version explains why the audience at Diru concerts already knows how to head-bang to the music right away.

My friend who introduced me to Dir en grey told me as we watched a DVD of their 2004 tour THE CODE OF VULGAR[ism], that she never understood why people even liked Byo" "Shin until she saw it in this tour. In my opinion, their performance of Byo" "Shin is always one to look forward to in concerts. Their 5Ugly KINGDOM tour really got me hooked on this song, and their performance of it in THE CODE OF VULGAR[ism] was absolutely perfect.

3 out of 5 stars -Six Ugly-.......2004-10-27

Not a bad album. But, it's definitley not up to par. It seems that Deg went for a different approach here (as they always like to do). The first four tracks are pretty strong, but 'Children' and 'byo [] shin' aren't very appealing.
I'd suggest checking out other Dir en grey albums before listening to this.

5 out of 5 stars KYO-SAMA!.......2002-11-13

I really love this CD. I mean, I really love it. Of course, this won't be very helpful since I like everything Dir en grey does. I know some people don't like it, but it appeals to me very much- even though Gauze, with a completely different sound, appealed to me equally. So, if you want a change of pace and something to bounce around to, get sixUgly. Ah, hell, get it anyway...

PS- The "Japanese track" is the sixUgly version of byo' 'shin which appereared on one of Dir en grey's earlier albums, I say "sixUgly version" because it has a completely different sound and lyrics.

4 out of 5 stars Impressive but a bit unusual.......2005-08-12

First and foremost Christian Lindberg is simply the most amazing trombone player ever, you should listen to his playing of Vivaldi's Winter on trombone, on his website's jukebox, at www.tarrodi.se The best song on the CD has to be Arabenne, which is written by Lindberg himself. Also Mandrake in the Corner is close behind, even people who aren't trombone connisseurs will enjoy these symphonic dazzlers. Some of the pure trombone songs such as Docter Decker the Dentist and the Fafner Fanfare for Four Frogs!, are technically impressive as well as colorful. Some of the other songs are a bit unusual such as the ballad of kit bones, with all the sound effects and singing. Some of the songs are a bit weird or unusual, such as Kokakoka, which has Lindberg trying to achieve quadrophonic sound with his singing plus three note multiphonic playing, truly amazing. The remaining songs on the CD are good but not amazing. Its a rare CD because of its uniqueness but it may not please everyone.

4 out of 5 stars Loads of fun.......2001-12-31

It seems that Lindberg has got together some talented Swedish chums to play a bunch of his compositions which involve lots of great things. Hear lots of very cool compositions - the Mandrake in particular is a great work and deserves many more outings from others. Hear fast, high playing - you may not be a fan of his "machine gun" Flight of the Bumblebee, but this technique with these pieces works a dream. Hear great interpretations - the performance is so convincing on these musically difficult works. You can't fail but to warm to this charming disc, even if you're not a particular fan of his more traditional recordings.
