Though Kelly Joe Phelps initially attracted attention for his virtuosity on slide guitar, he continues to extend his musical dimensions with each release. Once a solo troubadour, here the singer-songwriter features his richest arrangements to date, as producer Lee Townsend enlists stellar support from guitarists Bill Frisell and Steve Dawson, violinist Jesse Zubot, percussionist Scott Amendola (who's worked with Charlie Hunter), accordionist/keyboardist Chris Gestrin, vocalist Petra Haden (daughter of jazz great Charlie Haden), and bassists Andrew Downing and Keith Lowe. The musical atmospherics occasionally invite comparisons with kindred spirits such as Bruce Cockburn (the opening "Jericho"), Mark Knopfler ("Window Grin"), Richard Thompson ("Not So Far to Go"), and even a hint of Tom Waits ("Waiting for Marty"), but in the end Phelps defies categorization. A singer of bluesy grit, he remains a great guitarist, yet he plays with an understatement that enhances the material, rather than overwhelming the listener with hot licks. --Don McLeese

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Mesmerising.......2005-07-15

Some people worry that they don't know what Kelly Joe's songs are about, but it doesn't worry me. I kind of know what they're about anyway, once I've listened to them a few hundred times. In any case, it doesn't so much matter what they're meant to be about as what you think they're about. Like an abstract painting full of colour and texture, there's plenty to work with to build up your own picture. Listening to `Cardboard Box of Batteries', I see an old man and his memories, childhood trophies hidden away and that feeling you get looking at them again or just remembering. This is the image I get now, but I may well change my mind about it later on!
Very few songwriters have the courage, or the poetry, to do this. As a listener, you need a bit of both to appreciate these songs, but they are well worth the effort.
In this second outing with a band, KJP is clearly developing a style that's all his own and I'm certain makes up for the absence of his signature slide guitar. It's a seductive sound now, mostly gentle, even for the blues of `Knock Louder', with curious guitar and fiddle highlights creating the atmosphere to back up Kelly Joe's perfect vocals. If there's somebody around who does this sort of thing better, I can't think who they are.

5 out of 5 stars A great artist comes of age.......2005-03-02

This album is where Kelly Jo really stakes out his ground as one of the premier acoustic artists of the last ten years. And not just for his guitar playing (phenomenal as it is) but equally as much for the emotional quality of his singing, and the floating artistry of his song constuction.

It is not always easy to tune into what Kelly Jo is on about. His music is somewhat elliptical, and is occasionally abstract or even obtuse. But like all great musicians he transcends the limitations of his genre through sheer artistic ambition. What would be (in the hands of even a good acoustic guitarist) a challenging, pretty and melodic blues improvisation, becomes in Kelly Jo's case, a towering jazz achievement. At his best Kelly Jo is right up there with Coltrane, or Parker, or Van Morrison. For example, when I saw him last year doing this stuff, it was like hearing "Astral Weeks" crossed with "Blue Trane". I bought this album that day, and I have played it over and over ever since.

And, on this album, you also get the added bonus of Kelly Jo working with a set of sympathetic and understated musicians who masterfully shade and embellish his profound artistic vision - and they are a joy to hear as well.

Are these great songs? Does the album fit a standard descriptive profile? Can you hum the words at the laundromat? No, not really. But this is the real deal. Just let yourself be swept up in the epic sweep, of a great musician creating wonderful music. One of the best albums of the last year. Spread the word.

5 out of 5 stars Poetry set to music.......2003-04-10

Kelly Joe Phelps latest cd, Slingshot Professionals, is poetry set to music. If you have any of his previous cd's your sure to love this one, they just get better and better. I've played this cd over and over and I'm not the least bit tired of it. His lyrics are like poetry and the music is even better. I have seen him in person twice at small venues and he's even better live.

5 out of 5 stars Progression is a Beautiful thing...........2003-03-27

A Case in point, KJP 5th Release, "Slingshot Professionals" Each of Kelly Joe's Disc have shown growth that most Artist don't show in a life time. The Latest, this time with a full band, has shown the most growth so far. 2001's "Sky like a broken clock" KJP showed his progression as a Song writter, tunes like "Taylor John" and "Gold Tooth" with abstract lyrics, and Quirky beats Phelps took us to places that very few artist have. In "Slingshot Professinals" he continues to introduces his listeners to a cast of characters, and lets us draw our own conclusions about them. This is a mark of a great song writter. If you're looking for songs that have beginings, middles and ends to the story, you're in the wrong place, Because life can be abstract, and at times there are no answers. Phelps understands this, and it fuels his creativity, we just come along for the ride, and once again draw our own conclusions. The 5th Song on the Disc, "It's James Now" the Main Character, "Double r.j." I had to wonder...is it River Rat Jimmy? from shine eyed mister zen? In any case it is song full of rich characters and has as beautiful a melody has we've heard from Phelps yet. Phelps progression is quickly putting him among the eilte singer/songwritters/players of this generation.

2 out of 5 stars Just when you thought it couldn't get any weirder..........2003-03-17

The new Kelly Joe Phelps album is good instrumentally. (In case you're not familiar with his first three albums, you should know that "good" (rather than jaw-dropping amazing) is below par. Check out "Shine Eyed Mister Zen," first.) His band for these sessions was impressive. Zubot and Dawson are great and add much with their Weissenborn slide guitar, fiddle, and mandolin. Kelly Joe's singing and picking are as good as ever and blend in really well with the backing musicians. However, his choice to play harmonica himself and to let Steve Dawson play all of the slide guitar is a bit of a mystery. Notwithstanding the choice of instruments, the really disappointing thing about this CD, as well as his last album "Sky like a broken clock," is the wierd songwriting. It's just not a CD you want to play for other people. For example, the last album featured one song in which the character "peed down his leg" and another with a "rat boy takin' a leak against the wall." Thankfully, you won't find any urination here, but most of this CD "makes about as much sense as a frog on a chain" to quote the first line from "Knock Louder." The songwriting is like some kind of a bad impressionistic painting with the English language. "Silver in my cavity that plays music in the winter. I have a cardboard box of batteries hidden in a tire swing, a miner's hat with a light on top and a handful of wedding rings." ("Cardboard box of batteries") I hope Kelly Joe either gets back into covering traditional songs or rediscovers the knack for writing cool songs that make sense he showcased on his first three albums. Otherwise one of the greatest slide guitar players and interpreters of American folk music in the world will continue putting out very average albums.

    Album Description

"Slingshot", the MAC SWANKY TRIO's debut album, captures in the studio the crackling energy of their live performances. The songs contain witty half-rapped, half sung lyrics and combine a compelling blend of styles--equal parts rock, funk, lounge jazz and hip-hop. It all adds up to a booty-shaking beat, dripping with cool. "Slingshot" was co-produced with engineer Joe "Pus" Johnston (Cake/the Deftones).

All I can say is this album is incredible. You will not be able to keep your hips still. I used to see this group live every chance I got while they were still playing together. The performed very awsome, energetic shows, and this album captures that energy beautifully.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite local bands........2002-06-27

I use to see these guys play live around Sacramento years ago. And they were so much fun to watch. And this CD is one of the few I own that I can honestly say I enjoy from the first track to the last. Mac Swanky hasn't played together for several year now, and I'm still pretty sad about that! If Scott, Adam or Tom ever see this review: Please guys! Get together and give us another CD!!!

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars More song-oriented.......2001-11-11

This album tends to focus more on the songwriting and lyrics than most of Carl's past efforts. That said, there is still plenty of great Verheyen guitars parts on here. As his background as a top-call session guitarist would suggest, he's not only adept at soloing but also at crafting good rhythm parts. Plus, he's got the ability to write and arrange good songs, which is what keeps most listeners coming back for more.

Tracks I really enjoy include "Carried West" with it's well-written lyrics and grand chorus and "Mercury Rain" and "Saturn's Rings" feature some great guitar-playing in some great songs. The opening track, "Opening Above" reminds me somewhat of the opening sounds on Eric Johnson's "Ah Via Musicom", especially the ringing harmonics. Overall, this is a fantastic CD.

4 out of 5 stars Another Good Release by Verheyen!.......2001-08-16

Verheyen is a true guitar virtuoso. His past experience includes performing with many jazz musicians such as Dave Grusin, Richard Elliott, Dan Siegel, Stanley Clarke and Max Roach. He has also played with the likes of Robben Ford and was the lead guitarist for Supertramp replacing guitarist Roger Hodgson in 1985.

Slingshot is Verheyen's fourth release following the suprisingly good "Slang Justice". Unlike "Slang Justice" which leans heavily towards the blues, Slingshot leans more towards rock but does not totally abandoning what is some excellent blues guitar playing.

As a blues fan, I was somewhat disappointed in this change of direction. However, as a guitarist, it's hard not to appreciate the playing on this CD. Overall a good effort sure to please rock fans and tone worshipers.

4 out of 5 stars Fine songs, great guitar.......2001-07-24

As leader of his own band, and as veteran Supertramp guitarist, Verheyen is a recognized virtuoso in many styles. And this album is a must for fans of versatile blues-tinged rock stylings on guitar. The album features a package of very good original tunes, well sung and wonderfully played by Verheyen and his team. Songs exhibit quite a stylistic range from folk-rock to blues to harder rock. Highly recommended.

(P.S. on the star rating: On an "I like it" scale, this album rates five stars from me. But I am using the stars a la Rolling Stone Magazine--as an artistic rating--so 4 stars means seriously good. The philosophy is simply that if a very good album gets 5, what room is left for "Graceland" or "Rubber Soul"?)

5 out of 5 stars The most bang for the buck!.......1999-08-03

I was amazed at the variations one can get out of a guitar, but Carl seems to know every sound a gut box can make (and fast).

I tend to skip around the CD when it is in the player, but do listen to all the tracks about equally - I like this guy's stuff.

    Go Carl!

5 out of 5 stars A really fun record and a great introduction to Carl's music.......1999-06-21

This is probably Carl's most song/vocal-oriented CD. It continues, in a way, where Slang Justic left off. Much of the material reflects a Beatles and a strong blues influence and on the opening cut, you can hear a bit of Eric Johnson. The songs are really good and Carl has the good taste to know when to wail on guitar and when to hold back. If you dig great guitar tones, you'll find this album to be a real treat.

I first found out about Thanks to Gravity when they opened for Guster (back when Guster was Gus) in Boston in the late 90's, and they are really good. Slingshot is also an excellent album. What makes Thanks to Gravity so different from other bands is their lyrics have depth and are like poetry - they're not cheesy pretty boys with zero talent. Check them out - they'll never disappoint.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Band You've Never Heard In Your Life.......2003-01-09

This is a great album from the best unknown band around. High energy songs, original arrangements, and poetic lyrics make this release one that I've listened to continuously since it's release years ago. The band's most obvious asset is lead singer/ acoustic guitarist/ violinist Andy Happel, but the other members also shine. This is a difficult band to categorize with words, so your best bet is to check out the sound samples here or on the band's self-titled website.

The high points on this album are "The Last Time" with it's terrific bass line, a new fast version of "Scorpio Come" (originally on the "Sonata Brutalle" album), and two covers. The first of these is Madonna's "Justify My Love," which is turned into a funky number with a pleading vocal. The album proper ends with "Pachelbel's Canon," a song that's been a concert favorite since the early nineties. This arrangement is nothing short of spectacular, and the Happel-penned lyrics will have you singing "Yeah" as the song reaches it's high point.

If you're tired of all the prepackaged garbage out there and are looking for some good, fun, acoustic based rock, buy this CD!

Whenever I hear this riddim I just want to get up and dance! This is yet another riddim that came out, but I never really hear it anywhere, not even in the clubs. What is up with that? I think that DJ Blaxx produces the best dance riddims, although some riddims that come out are so weird you can't even catch the tempo to dance to it, Slingshot is one of those riddims that just have that "get up and dance" tempo to it. Check out "Ready Fi Dead" by Vybz Kartel, "Big Woman" by Buccaneer. You will get out of your seat indeed!
