Some Other Sucker's Parade
Editorial Reviews

"I don't have my finger on the pulse of my generation / I just got my hand on my heart," sings Justin Currie on "Not Where It's At," the opening song from Del Amitri's fourth album. The line and the song adequately sum up this Scottish band's plaintive sound; guitars with a gentle twang and a singer who is not afraid to show off his emotional vulnerability. Derisive lyrics occasionally spoil the melancholy tones of songs like "Mother Nature's Writing" and "High Times." --Aidin Vaziri

under-rated classic .......2005-11-24
del amitri, some other's suckers parade great title by the way boys...these guys surely did know how to write catchy melodies and lyrics which will swim round your head for weeks and i think this album bombed when it was released which is a damn shame because it's a beautiful well produced masterpiece
features my favorites
"not where it's at! title track "what i think she sees"
"medicine" "lucky guy"
a \classic album after purchasing this buy "twisted" another one of them classics you hear about
GREAT collection of songs that gets a bad rap.......2004-06-12
I have to say that this is my favorite Dels record even though there's a lack of Justin and Iain's trademark acoustic guitar. It gets kind of a bad rap from old Del Amitri fans that's not justified as I think that it's really a solid rock album. Or even the best "power-pop" album ever made! On this record, Justin really refined his incredible talent for writing astounding lyrics of the darker sides of life (the booze, the rain...) and romance and wrapping them in the most gorgeous melodies this side of Lennon and McCartney. I just think that A&M was giving up on them by this point and it's interesting to note that when I saw them at the Fillmore promoting this album, Justin introduced "Not Where It's At" as their new single that the label had just pulled off promoting. Nice thing for the label to do to the band in the middle of a tour, but GREAT song. They were one of the best bands to see at this point with new addition Kris Dollimore, clearly outshining the other touted UK bands that all the music mags covered at the time. What got to me is how road worthy this group of Scottish guys in their early 30s had sounded like they had been playing for years and years. They ROCKED!Anyway, personally I would highly recommend it as I would their whole catalogue.
Definitely in my Top 10..........2003-07-07
OK. I will be the first to say that I am not a true Del Amitri "fan", I have never listen to Twisted (except the song "Roll to Me") and I have not been following them since the early 80's when they started. Having said all that, I have to tell you that this is one of the best albums I've ever heard. The first time I heard anything off this album was on a Launch CD (when they used to be a CD music magazine). I heard three sample tracks from this album. That same day, I went to a record store and they had it in one of those "listen before you buy" set-ups. So, I listened to 1 minute of every song. And every song I came to seemed better than the previous one. Needless to say, I bought it right then and there.
I have worn this CD out many times. And, when I have accidentally lost it myself or from letting someone borrow it, I ALWAYS replace it...even though it is out-of-print. It is that good. I would consider this a good starting point for anyone wanting to get into Del Amitri. Then listen to Twisted...
Severely Overlooked Masterpiece -- I'm Not Kidding.......2001-10-17
Del Amitri's fifth studio album really deserves another listen. And then several others. 'Some Other Sucker's Parade' is not as immediately catchy as 'Twisted' or the unsurpassed 'Change Everything' but patience (this is one of those albums that gets better with repeated listenings) will reveal an album full of poetic lyrics (Justin Currie is one the greatest songwriters of the last 20 years--his songs truly read like poetry) and great instrumentation. The intertwining of guitar and piano is done better on this album than any I have heard and there's not a bad song in the batch. While not particularly uplifting, the songs will make you think and listen in wonder at the poetry of it all--and make you wish these guys would put albums out much more frequently. Del Amitri certainly aren't the most prolific of bands, but the albums they do put out are amongst the most well-written and performed available. If you dig any of there other albums, you will love this one--and track down as many b-sides as you can find; this is one band whose b-sides (and there are many more in addition to those collected on the 'Lousy in Love' cd) are as good as their a-sides (and that is very very good). Very Highly Recommended.
A definite grower.......1999-08-25
OK, I admit it. The first time I heard it I thought it sucked. I liked "Not Where It's At" and that was it. So disappointed and it sat in the CD rack for 6 months. Then I started to play it and listen to it and boy does it get better and better. The irony between the melodic tuneful melodies, and the poignant, twisted (pardon the pun)lyrics is evident. "just because I'm here/don't mean I can't walk out that door/Ain't that what those running shoes are for" is a great example of Justin's lyrics from "What I Think She Sees" Can't wait for the next release!!

Discovering Del Amitri.......2005-09-10
has been an amazing kick. I never knew these guys existed, till someone recommended I give a listen to "Nothing Ever Happens" (which isn't on this CD, but I'll get to that). I was impressed and intrigued enough to check out the Dels' best-of CD, and from there I was hooked.
This CD isn't as over-all brilliant and arresting as some of their earlier albums, but it's still pretty bloody good. Some quite good songs in the lineup: the title song, "Not Where It's At," "Medicine," "Make It Always Be Too Late." Even when the music isn't much (as in "Through All that Nothing"), the lyrics can still be effective, intelligent, carrying the writers' trademark twists of meaning, some more subtle than others. Other times the lyrics aren't inspiring ("No Family Man") but the music/melody is the saving grace. Among the songs about love going wrong (or occasionally right) are things like the odd little reflective gem "Mother Nature's Writing," or the grating "High Times," which is a good parody of yer typical drug culture song, but is, well, grating. But then there's the wry, bounce-around-the-room "Life Is Full" or the quirky, bluesy "Paper Thin." The version of this album that I bought has a bonus track, "Sleep Instead of Teardrops," which goes in the quite-good list.
Even if this CD isn't up to the Dels' usual standard, it's still Del Amitri, which ain't bad at all.
8/8/06--Since initially reviewing this CD, I've changed my mind about it not being up to Del Amitri's usual standard! It is, too, brilliant. And powerful. It should have at least a 4-star rating, perhaps even the full 5. I've come to appreciate "Cruel Light of Day," "No Family Man," "What I Think She Sees," "High Times" and the title song more fully. I think I found it a little intimidating at first, but no more.

Unoriginal And Repetitive.......2001-03-11
I bought 'Some Other Suckers Parade' because I had heard a handful of Del Amitri songs on MTV during the years, which I all found pretty alright.
But the album is boring. It's poppish rock with tiny aspects of folk. The singer is good, the musicians are OK - but the music itself is so uninspired and unoriginal.
Why didn't they just release a single? 'Some Other Suckers Parade' contains 2 or 3 melodies, with 14 different (and banal!) lyrics. Only exception is the closing 'Make It Always Be Too Late' which has something, without being superb.
If you like this style, I will recommend you The Rembrandts instead of Del Amitri. I find it difficult to write that this album is bad, it's just uninspired and boring.
Whoa, what happened?.......2000-07-07
I have been enamored with Del Amitri since their 1990 release "Waking Hours". Justin Currie is a terrific songwriter and lyricist, putting together the type of songs that transport you from your chair/sofa and deposit you in a smokey pub somewhere outside of Glasgow where the rain never stops, the bar never closes, and people wander the streets forever in a haze of broken-hearted pain.
Then this song called "Roll to me" came along. I understand the need for a hit to keep selling records, so I waited while all the other Del fans I know where crying sellout.
Next thing I know I'm hearing "not where it's at" on the radio. The title could not be more appropriate. Currie has been listening to a little too much Oasis, and it shows. The tradional Del Amitri sound is almost gone here, only to be replaced by a kind of electrified-Beatle-fication. There are a couple of bright spots ("What I think She Sees" and "No Family Man"), and this import version is nice to have for the bonus tracks, but really, this is not their best work. The production is not clean, either, unlike Twisted, which has immpecciable sound quality.
I'm anxiously awaiting the return of the brooding scotsman. Hope they leave the nods to the Beatles in Liverpool.
American Version Review!.......2000-02-27
I am a huge Del Amitri fan. So my review is off a big fan who at this point is knit-picking. The album, as are all Del Amitri albums, is great. Again, as before the music and the lyrics are awesome. If you have not heard a Dels song before, not only listen but check out the lyrics and picture a story. My one problem with the album is that many of the songs seem a bit too short. Check out: Medicine, No Family Man, What I Think She Sees, and Some other Suckers Parade.
Less Angst.......2000-01-21
I love Del Amitri and bought this for the song "Not Where It's At". The mood is happier than on previous records (not that there's anything wrong with that). It just doesn't have as much of the raw energy as the previous ones, although there are some great songs like the wry kiss-off "Not Where It's At", "Won't Make It Better", "Lucky Guy", and the arrogantly stubborn "No Family Man". Ian Harvie's guitar sounds great as always, but I miss David Cummings being in the band. Also, I hope they remember to include the lyrics next time!
