Someone, Somewhere...
Editorial Reviews
DIW (Devil in the Woods)
It echoes nearly every great blast of sound from the past 50 years.
Product Description
Former Truly (Sub Pop, Capitol) frontman Robert Roth's solo debut, "Someone, Somewhere
," is an uncompromising statement of artistic dedication. Equal parts Brian Wilson detail, Flaming Lips experimentation, Spiritualized bombast, and Tom Verlaine geometry, Roth's soulful drawl and unshakeable soaring melodies weave together washes of haunted guitars, mellotron-soaked soundscapes, and warped orchestral passages into an ageless epic that differentiates itself from imitations.
Devil in the Woods Magazine hailed "Someone, Somewhere
" as a "truly timeless creation," and said "Roth's work overwhelms listeners one moment, then pacifies them in starkly bare passages seconds later. It echoes nearly every great blast of sound from the past 50 years, not in the order of its chords, but in its ability to shake listeners from their complacency."
On his own for the first time, Roth's fierce yet elegant songwriting takes center stage. "Someone, Somewhere
" plays like a movie, putting you on a first-name basis with characters like "Vicki and Jacky" as they move between urban decay and gentrification ("Walk All Over Downtown Life"), stumbling into the violence and chaos of Seattle's millennium-closing WTO riots ("Streetplay 99") into the rolling blackouts of both U.S. Coast's ("Blackout City Serenade") and the personal alienation that accompanies living in a world clouded over by the harsh order of 9/11's cultural aftermath ("Relive These X," "Under the Ever-Watchful Eye," and "Yesterday's War").
Roth's work is personal but it also connects the personal to the political in the most subtly persuasive way. Avoiding lectures or preaching, he just recounts the low-level battles creeping everyday outside his front door. Somewhere between Thoreau's "Walden" and Zinn's "A People's History of the United States," Someone, Somewhere's ultimate effect is simultaneously unsettling and empowering. It reminds us that there are some compromises we must simply refuse to make.

Too Much Demand, Not Enough Material.......2005-05-03
By 1966, Dean's TV show was in full swing, and the demand for his albums was H-O-T! To try and meet the demand, Reprise records tried to mix and match new Dean Martin tracks, with tracks from his more obscure country albums, in order to fill out and *sell* more albums. Somewhere there's a Someone.. is pure cashbox. Aside from the title song and That Old Clock On the Wall, there's nothing new here. A Million and One has some new C&W flavored material in a late 60's country vein.. but manages to retread a few earlier tracks as well. Frankly I'd get Happiness Is & Welcome To My World.
Some nice new things and some retreads.......2003-05-25
Dean was producing hits so quickly from 1965-68 that with all his television and movie appearances he hardly had time to record enough material to fill new albums. So, Reprise re-released some laid back country material from 1962-63 for these albums, along with new hit versions of "Somewhere There's A Someone", "A Million And One", and "Come Running Back". Three other cuts are worth mentioning -- "That Old Clock On The Wall" has a great rhythm and strong beat, and was written by Dean's pianist Ken Lane (who also wrote "Everybody Loves Somebody"). "Shades" is a truly fine country song with a really neat arrangement, and probably was intended as the hit side of "A Million And One". And "Nobody But A Fool" is just one heck of a fun country novelty number.

Album Description
The jaunty Gene DePaul score for the musical play "Lil' Abner" based on the comic strip by Al Capp is heard instrumentally - and it's quite a show! "Broadway Bouquet" from 1965 is an important part of the famed Faith "string" album series - perhaps the pinnacle of his rich string sound that spanned gorgeous melodies and counterlines across sections of the large orchestra. (Bill Halvorsen)
Album Description
Pianist Percy Faith, a pioneer of the Easy Listening genre, had a successful and lengthy career as the in-house conductor and arranger for Columbia Records. Faith was renowned for his musical interpretations of Broadway and motion picture music. These two reissues from Collectables on 1 CD were originally released in 1965. 24 tracks. 2003.
Customer Reviews:
It's not stereo.......2005-01-10
I bought this solely for "Once Upon a Time", and was dismayed that the CD is mono, not stereo. The quality of the recordings leaves much to be desired, as many of them lack the pristine quality I'm used to on a CD.
classic arrangements by the classic gentlemen ~ Percy Faith.......2004-02-16
Two albums from the Columbia Records people blending different decades "Li'l Abner" (originally released CL 955 in 1956) and "Broadway Bouquet" (originally released LS 9156 in 1965), sharing the unmistakable style of the "Percy Faith Touch" ~ you know in an instant you're in for the best of the best ~ Duke Ellington was so taken with Faith's arrangements, that he would give anything to be able to arrange in that fashion.
Let's begin with "IT'S A TYPICAL DAY" along with "LOVE IN A HOME", both from "Li'l Abner", wonderful opening counterparts and the stirring arrangements by Maestro Percy Faith ~ "JUBILATON T. CORNPONE", uplifting cue that will keep bouncing in your head for hours, maybe even days ~ "IF I HAD MY DRUTHERS", one of the forgettable tunes from the show ~ "NAMELY YOU", has to be the best and favorite song of the Johnny Mercer and Gene De Paul score ~ by the way, these two composers penned the lively screen musical "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers", both scores were sure winners from two talented songwriters, Percy Faith steps up to the podium and takes it to another level.
Now with "Broadway Bouquet", we have perfection within the realm of lush arranging, so flawless "HELLO, DOLLY!" (Jerry Herman), "ONCE UPON A TIME" (Adams/Strouse), "SOMEWHERE" (Sondheim/Bernstein), "SUNRISE, SUNSET/FIDDLER ON THE ROOF" (Harnick/Bock) (one of my all-time favorites, can't get enough of this score), "WHO CAN I TURN TO (WHEN NOBODY NEEDS ME)" (Bricusse/Newley), "A QUIET THING" (Ebb/Kander), "MAKE SOMEONE HAPPY" (Comden/Green/Styne), "WHAT KIND OF FOOL AM I?" (Bricusse/Newley) (two of the best songwriters in the business), "LONG AGO" (David Heneker), "THE SWEETEST SOUNDS" (Richard Rodgers) (his credit of compositions goes through the ceiling, will never be another like 'em), "AS LONG AS HE NEEDS ME" (Lionel Bart) (a wonderful classic that is still popular by today's standards), "THEME FROM "GOLDEN BOY" (Adams Strouse) (another team of composers that have made an impact on the Broadway scene) ~ an example of the "Percy Faith Touch", so effortless, you feel like you're floating on a cloud ~ falls into Percy's many albums of fabulous string arrangements, they grabbed the attention of the listener and wouldn't let go. Can't think of any other arranger/composer who left such a great legacy as this man!
Highly recommend to ALL fans of Percy Faith ~ thanks to Collectables for releasing this collection from the vaults of Columbia Records ~ so listeners sit back, relax and enjoy a small part of Maestro Percy Faith's fabulous career!

Nice cross-over.......2003-03-09
There is only a single track on "The Kiri Selection" that didn't come from one of her other releases, and that is "The World You're Coming Into" from Paul McCartney's Liverpool Oratorio. The rest of her songs can also be heard on "Kiri Sings Gershwin," "Come to the Fair - Folk Songs & Ballads," "From Heart to Heart" with Malcolm McNeill, and "Kiri Sings Kern."
It's a jumbled mixture but Dame Kiri negotiates the songs with a light, brilliant touch, never bringing too much heavy operatic artillery to bear on what are essentially popular songs. For those of you who are not operatically inclined, you may remember this lovely soprano from the 1981 marriage ceremony of HRH the Prince of Wales to the Lady Diana Spencer. Te Kanawa sang "Let the Bright Seraphim" (and wore a very strange hat).
Unlike some sopranos (my chorale director says Dame Joan never sang a consonant throughout her entire career), Kiri is scrupulous about her intonation and you will be able to understand almost every syllable she sings. My personal favorite is her rendition of Kern's "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes:" "They said some day you'll find,/ All who love are blind,/ When your heart's on fire,/ you must realize,/ Smoke gets in your eyes." She sings with intense pathos, yet a little tremble of courage. I can just see her sitting in some chic '30s cocktail lounge, head (with that outrageous hat on it) held high while her friends chaff her about her unfaithful love. She reaches up to brush the smoke or tears from her eyes and pretends to laugh away a remark that was much too personal.
When Kiri sustains a note, she does something with it. She doesn't just sit on it à la Pavrotti and let us admire her beautiful voice. She interprets every nuance of the lyrics, unlike some of my very favorite opera singers who don't cross over into popular music very well, e.g. Domingo, Ramey, Norman, and Dame Joan.
Te Kawana fans, unless you already own all four of the albums mentioned above, this CD is definitely worth your while. Kern and Gershwin enthusiasts will also find interpretations to treasure.
Top Performance.......1999-06-16
I have only just purchased this CD, and I'm in love with it already! Kiri's voice is so incredibly versatile, that you are just STUNNED by her ability to sing Gershwin, Kern and others like a jazz singer. She's incredible, and so's the recording. I'd recommend it to anyone, as Kiri's best CD outside of her West Side Story and full opera performance CD's. Her duet with Malcom O'Neill is amazing, and the way she interperets Gershwin's hits is so neat - far better than I've ever heard. The only SLIGHT moan I would have is that in one or two of the songs, she is a little to far away from the mic, and the orchestra are a little loud. But considering how great she sounds - does it matter? Make this your next Kiri CD purchase.

The Beginning of Something Beautiful.......2004-06-11
When music is good it's a wonderful thing; better than any drug, any amount of material things.... anything!! Robert Roth has been making good music for years with former band Truly, and has therefore heeped a mountain of pressure on himself to deliver with this, his first solo outing. Being a fan of his past works I have to confess I was apprehensive.
But you know what? The boy dun good!!!!
From beginning to end this album is filled with songs which never leave your head. From the mellow Lighting and Thunder, to the faster harder Relive These X, to the subtle title track, to the dark pop of Poison Arrow, 'Someone, Somewhere' is truly a great album, filled with dramatic soundscapes, and layer upon layer of keyboards and guitars intertwining to form beautiful melodies. Roth has outgrown the early Seattle sounds of his past and has broken through into something more rounded. You can hear any great musician from the last 20 years in here if you listen hard enough.
Go get this!!! You will never forget the day you bought it. It'll be the beginning of the rest of your life. AL
