    5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Pure & Beautiful.......2005-10-31

If you buy no other classical music, buy this collection. CD 1 (Relax) is perfect for dinner, quiet entertaining or just soft music while you're working. From "Come Away With Me", to "Whiter Shade of Pale" to "Knights in White Satin"... each piece is it's own movement - and moved you will be... Perfect for a romantic evening. CD2 is more robust, but equally entertaining. "Layla", "Livin On A Prayer", Stairway to Heaven", "Run to You" and "Bohemian Rhapsody" - you owe it to yourself to hear these licks performed by the RPO.

    5 out of 5 stars Symphonic Rock.......2005-07-25

It really isn't rock, but it is a very pleasant presentation of popular music, rendered in creative ways by a full symphony orchestra. It sounds like the orchestra had a great time making these CD's.

3 out of 5 stars pleasant easy listening.......2005-07-19

It's not extremely interesting music, but nice background, relaxing and pleasant with full orchestra. Not a bad buy at all!

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent CD.......2005-03-20

I received this as a present and at first I wasn't sure if I would like it because I don't like some of the original songs, but there's something about hearing the orchestra play that makes me like all of them. Just try it out.

If you like Disney's 'Jungle Book', in particular Louis Prima singing "I wanna be like you" and King Louis talking to Mowgli, then listen to Big Maceo talking to Tampa Red in "She wants to sell my monkey" and make the connection. Remember, this was recorded in 1942! Other than that it's an excellent CD by one of the warmest, most gentle blues artists the world has ever known.

5 out of 5 stars The best Rock and Roll.......2003-08-10

If Buddy Holly were making music today, he would sound exactly like Watershed! They are the quintessential rock and roll band. I just wish there were more bands like them. Just like The More It Hurts... all of their albums display the best in feel good, have fun, sway with your friends, good music. If it weren't for Watershed I would have given up on music altogether. Way to go!

5 out of 5 stars Watershed is back with a vengence!.......2002-12-13

A few years ago I was at a Watershed show and they played some of their "new" material that was going to be part of thier next album. Absolutely blew me away. After years of anticipation The More it Hurts, The more it Works has finally arrived. It lives up to every expectation and beyond. These hard-working musicians never gave up after being dropped from Epic and now finally seem poised for the big time. The pairing of this group and Tim Patalan (Sponge,Hoarse) works perfectly to being out Watershed's true potential. This album is filled with catchy rock athems that will be in your head for days and must be experienced at full volume. These guys stick to their roots and are rock true and through. Drinking, high energy, and fun shows. This disc captures the true Watershed spirit. If you are going to purchase one of their discs this is the one to get.

    4 out of 5 stars *Now* I'm a fan..........2002-12-09

Apart from the moderate liking of "Black Concert T-Shirt" back in the mid 90's, I was never an overly big fan of Watershed. Occasionally they'd release a recording to local radio that was generally unimpressive, although never objectionable. But after hearing the surprisingly phenominal songs "Can't Be Myself" and "Anniversary" on the radio, I found myself getting this CD. And I'm glad I did. An amazing collection of indie rock (rather than "Melodic hook filled power pop" as described above) where every song is unique rather than being a rehash of the same song over and over. Not every song hits the mark, but nearly all of them do -- and it makes for a CD you'll be singing to in no time. Take it from someone who owns over 200 CD's (nearly all of which are small and indie bands) -- and therefore someone who's extremely critical about new music -- this is a CD to buy.

5 out of 5 stars Rockativity In Spades.......2002-08-29

What a great record. Unlike so many releases this year, The More It Hurts The More It Works delivers the rock. It kicks you in your face, then cradles you as if to say everything is going to fine, only to blast you again with crushing 4x4 time. It's a well-balanced album that I can't stop listening to. If you gotta rock, you gotta get this ablum.

5 out of 5 stars Looking for GOOD music?.......2002-06-26

Give this band a listen. Look for their newest cd (Fifth of July). Very, very good.

          Album Description

Yet another superb entry in Ace's short series of Expanded Versions of Millie Jackson's original Spring albums.

"Hurts So Good" first appeared in 1973, on the back of Ms. Jackson's Top 3 R&B/Top 30 Pop US success with its title track (her all-time biggest US hit, by the way). Its appearance also marked the first time that Millie recorded in the famous southern soul town of Muscle Shoals, Alabama - where her major subsequent successes "Caught Up" and "Still Caught Up" (both also available in this series) would be recorded in their entirety.

This newly remastered version, from the original Spring album production master, adds a generous six bonus tracks, including a first-ever true stereo mix of Millie's non-album 45 "Breakaway", several very different mixes of some of the album's highlights and two `one take' demos that Millie never recorded `finished' versions of.

Once again issued with the co-operation and participation of Ms. Jackson herself, this is an hour's worth of seminal Millie that no true fan or collector will care to be without.

5 out of 5 stars Why is this gem out of print?.......2002-09-25

It's kind of amazing that this-one of the Mekons' most appealing albums-remains out of print. But it's worth seeking out for its funky, almost-reggae-ish vibe. Raucous, pub-style dance numbers like "Fantastic Voyage" keep company with a couple of treasures by dulcet-voiced Sally Timms-"Ghosts of American Astornauts" and a very unusual, chilly reading of the Rolling Stones' "Heart of Stone." A very good record by one of the most overlooked bands in the biz.

5 out of 5 stars A history of resistance denied by bishops, lawyers, spies..........2002-07-20

This is an important, interesting, coherent album which is unaccountably almost unavailable. In my other, cooler life as an interviewer, I was able to ask Lu Edmonds (from the Mekons, a very talented multi-instrumentalist who also plays with the Blokes) why these albums were more-or-less out of print, and he told me he wasn't sure! By contrast with Honky Tonkin' and Fear and Whisky, So Good It Hurts seems to rely less on U.S. country music and more on English traditions of balladry. "Johnny Miner" seems to be an English folk song or protest song about the coal industry; "Robin Hood" takes some of its lyrics from one of Shelley's pro-revolutionary poems. Like most middle period Mekons albums, So Good It Hurts is tremendously a _written_ album--the lyrics are meaningful and clever, with buried allusions to a variety of political and literary matters. "Dora" for example, references (of course, I could be making a big fool of myself here, but I'm pretty sure) one of Freud's more famous female patients. Word on the street--or actually, word among music geeks who buy vinyl--has it that the liner notes to the LP are a work of art in themselves. Musically, the album is more skillful than, say, Fear and Whisky; it mixes straight-up rock tropes with folk violin, the good old punk rock, and country. One of the delights of this album is its muscial proficiency--early albums are rawer, later albums are more concerned with the conceptual, and live albums are often a matter of (granted, charming and amusing) public drunkenness. So Good It Hurts foregrounds the Mekons' solid musical skill. It's a beautiful, exciting and timeless production which could easily command a much larger audience than its availability allows it.
