This beautiful 2on1 CD includes: "WONDERFUL DAY" a rare US-only collection of recordings from 1952-61 (tracks 3, 10 & 14 are previously unreleased in the UK/USA on CD format and are unique to this re-issue!); `WITH A SMILE AND A SONG' is Doris's kids-themed studio album - recorded in July 1964 with Jimmy Joyce & His Children's Chorus.

'Wonderful Day' includes two bonus tracks, 'That Jane From Maine' (version with train effects) & 'Perfect Understanding', as well as other rare &/or previously unreleased tracks included in the Collector's Edition. 26 tracks in all. Sleeve contains original album artwork, notes & credits. Columbia. 2003.

Compiled to capitalize on her then-current film "Lover Come Back", 'Wonderful Day' was an Imperial Butter give-away never intended to last more than a few months in shoppers' minds, but at long last it's available on CD(coupled with the corny, but sweetly inspiring 'With a Smile & A Song'). Doris is featured in some of her finest movie-music moments on "Never Look Back", "Possess Me" and "Should I Surrender", not to mention her smash hit "Que Sera, Sera". It's an album that was only available in thrift stores, old record shops and antique barns for years. It's wonderful to have it on disc!

It's Christmas every day with Doris, as this terrific "Two on One" proves. That voice never fails to put a smile on my face. First off, "Wonderful Day" is a nice collection of some of her most famous hits, including "Pillow Talk" and "Whatever Will Be, Will Be." The album was made to center around two songs from her then current film "Lover Come Back," the title song and "Should I Surrender." Also included are Day's haunting and rare "Julie" and a fun version of "That Jane From Maine." "With a Smile and a Song" is an LP I've been waiting for a few years to be released on CD. Backed by a delightful children's chorus, Day makes "Do Re Mi" and "High Hopes" her own. My favorite is "Swinging On a Star" - which truly soars. This is an excellent disc you will want in your collection!

I LOVE the Swingle Singers. The first time I heard them sing Bach back in the 60's I was driving a car and I was so blown away that I had to pull off the road. And I LOVE Irving Berlin's music; his message is simple and direct and tuneful. And therein lies the rub. To me, the jazz vocal styles, the contemporary harmonies and the whimsical utterances of the Swingle Singers go together with Irving Berlin's music like oil and water; they just don't mix. The words and melodies are those of Irving Berlin but the end result isn't Irving Berlin. Admittedly this is one man's opinion, and others might take great pleasure in the Swingle Singers' unfailing virtuosity and inventiveness. But if you anticipate the straighforward tunes and emotional directness in Berlin's music, you are apt to be disappointed.
