I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

The music of Orlando Gibbons represents the English response to radical changes that stemmed largely from Italy in the age of the birth of opera and a move away from the contrapunctal complexities of previous centuries. Whereas the Italian tended to write gradiose and radical works such of those by Monteverdi, the English tended to write music that was stylistically old-fashioned by the standards of the times, unostentatious with its preference for the sounds of the viol consort that helped make it so intimately poetic and evocative. The madrigal The Silver Swan is one of the most famous examples of English music of its time.

We really should rejoice over the fact that Naxos has this superb recording in its catalog. The music making here is first rate in every possible way. Of course Tesser Bonner is a regular with none other than the Tallis Scholars, testifying to the fact that Naxos is above all a quality label. In particular I really do love the way Bonner uses period pronounciation of the texts whereas Emma Kirky sadly modernises the pronounciation in music of this period. Thus the word 'bird' is pronounced more like 'beard'. I feel this helps to evoke the sense of the recreation of a lost world. The instrumental pieces too are unfailingly fine with excellent ensemble work by Red Byrd.

A superb recording recommendable in every possible way.

to misquote slightly the first vocal number on this disc. This is a really superlative production in every respect except that the words are not provided for the vocal items (the words of the anonymous The Silver Swan are worth knowing!). Even the liner note, by John Bryan, is excellent, which proves what I had never doubted, namely that the thing can be done on a budget label.

There are nearly 70 minutes of music here, and the plan seems to have been to give as broad a representation as possible of the output of this notable composer. There are 23 items in total, featuring music for accompanied solo voice and 5-part ensemble, keyboard compositions played on three different types of instrument, and items for viol ensembles of 2,3,4,and 6 instruments. Thought and care has obviously gone into the sequencing of the pieces, and the recital ends powerfully with a 5-part anthem `Glorious and Powerful God' led off by a gent with a truly terrific bass voice. One notable inclusion is an In Nomine for 4 viols. An In Nomine is actually a musical form, and a specifically English one, consisting of a free fantasia on a canto fermo deriving originally from plainsong via a mass by John Taverner. Solo status is accorded to Timothy Roberts who performs the three keyboard numbers, and to Tessa Bonner the soprano soloist in the seven pieces of that nature. I had the opportunity to compare her in The Silver Swan with Rachel Elliott on another outstanding Gibbons disc, by a group calling themselves Concordia (director Mark Levy), and you may actually prefer, as I do, the way Concordia do it. The piece benefits from Concordia's slower tempo, and my personal preference is for Elliott's voice, although she does use a modicum of vibrato, so this preference will not be shared by everyone. Their disc goes under the title Go From My Window, which is not a song but a set of 10 variations on a `ditty' by that title. In this piece I have to give my vote to Concordia again, as they give it with colossal panache and virtuosity - I'm not surprised they elected to call the disc after it. In fact the two recitals have another 4 pieces in common, and in these I can find nothing to choose between the two groups, so fine do both seem to me.

Enthusiasts for music of this period, and anyone even curious about it, are also recommended a keyboard recital , by John Kitchen, of works by the Scottish composer Kinloch, music that surprised even me (Scottish myself) by its outstanding quality. Long may enterprises like these continue.

This is a handsomely played and beautifully recorded disc. The Rose Consort of Viols aptly catches the inherent melancholy of Gibbons style while Tessa Bonner sings ethereally as usual. With singing of Bonner's purity, as in "Silver Swanne", who needs texts? This is more than a bargain; it is a wonderful introduction to the deeply touching music of Orlando Gibbons.

As the title says mainly viol consort and keyboard music, but the highlights are the two english anthems for 5 voices, and three solo pieces with Tessa Bonner - including the famous "The Silver Swan". So why no texts? Playing time 68'24".

I'm a HUGE Mantovani fan and have had mixed results trying to upgrade my collection to CDs. This collection is the original orchestra arrangements of all the classics. This is the one to buy.

The Mantovanti Orchestra shows off their "marvelous versatility" in this "wonderful" collection of "8 CDs", with titles that tell you "just what to expect", such as: "The Love Songs", "Memorable Classics", "Itallian Favorites", "On Broadway", etc. You can set the MOOD for practically ANY occassion! There are even some "popular" selections that we all know and treasure like: "Moon River", "Over the Rainbow" and "Autum Leaves"!
You will NOT want to remove these GREAT CDs from your CD Player, once you have listened to them! They make "nice" background music for small get-togethers or "lovely" background music for those "ROMANTIC DINNERS", for you and your "SPECIAL SOMEONE"!!! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS SET!!! It is a GREAT DEAL for the money, even at the full price!!!

    After the heady days of SCHEHEREZADE and NOVELLA, things went commercially downhill fairly quickly for Renaissance. It really wasn't their fault. The musical landscape was changing in the late 70s and their style of light folk/prog fell increasingly into disfavor with the public and the critics alike. It's a shame, too, because there are few things more pathetic than a great band attempting to placate a loyal following while simultaneously pandering to a potentially new audience in desperation (ELP's LOVE BEACH, anyone?). The Kate Bush/Toyah-influenced CAMERA CAMERA (whose laughably "contemporary" cover was louder than most of the music in the grooves) notwithstanding, the band still had the knack for releasing punchy and beguilingly melodic prog/pop (see that album's "Faeries," for example).

    SONGS FROM RENAISSANCE DAYS (no, it isn't a collection of medieval recorder pieces) compiles tracks written and recorded by Annie Haslam, Jon Camp and Michael Dunford and guests at various times from 1979 into the early 80's. Long gone is the orchestration so identified with Renaissance in the 70s (some tracks are clearly demos); instead, tasteful synthetic flourishes (five different keyboard players!) accompany the still largely acoustic textures the band was always known for. As for the songs, they're pretty much hit-or-miss. The album begins promisingly enough with the lovely "Africa," which has one of the band's most gorgeous melodies ever - - the kind only Renaissance could conjure. Things begin getting iffy around track four, though, and the album kind of slumps in the middle. "No Beginning No End," is slight and forgettable. "The Body Machine" sounds exactly like you think it does. And "Only When I Laugh" is so overwrought I had to check to make sure Laura Brannigan hadn't popped in for a guest vocal spot. But their take on Paul Simon's "America" is a welcome respite late in the proceedings, and the lengthy closer "You" has some very nice passages indeed.

    Okay, so it isn't SCHEHEREZADE or TURN OF THE CARDS. That's all right. Any time these people want to get together and record, I'll be willing to listen. Even if they decide to re-re-record "Northern Lights."

    4 out of 5 stars Relaxing, high-quality music.......2003-07-09

    The group Renaissance was formed in 1969, and featured symphonic sound, and excellence in both lyrics and vocal performances. In 1987, the group broke up. In 1997, this album was released, including songs taped from 1979 to 1988, to cover the final evolution in the group. The music is hauntingly beautiful, showing strong influences from Disco music.

    As a long-time fan of the group ABBA, I right away heard similarities between this album and the classic ABBA sound. However, Renaissance's sound is less brash than ABBA's, being much more symphonic, and having a relaxing, lyrical quality. Therefore, if you want relaxing, high-quality music, then I highly recommend this album to you.

    This CD consists of rare and unreleased songs from Renaissance. One, "Island of Avalon", is a B-side from the 1979 "Azure d'Or" sessions. "Northern Lights" and "No Beginning/No End" are solo demos from Annie Haslam dating from 1988. The rest come from sessions around the period of the "Time-Line" album. So, not surprisingly, the sound continues the 80's synth-pop sounds the band had begun producing during the Nevada sessions and continued through "Camera Camera" and "Time-Line". So, a lot of fans of the band's original classical/progressive sound will be put off by the dance rhythms of tracks such as "The Body Machine" and "You". The strongest tracks are the lovely ballads "Only When I Laugh", "Africa", "Dreamaker" and a cool version of Paul Simon's "America". Still, only fans really familiar with the band's late period should pick this up.
