4 out of 5 stars Classic Review.......2007-02-17

I owned this LP in my twenties, when I listened to mostly jazz and classical music genres. I had always liked show tunes and the the music from My Fair Lady, especially. Andre Previn's ingenious renditions and improvisations to these songs are typical 60's jazz. This CD reproduction is truly a classic and one that should make up any collection of late 50's and 60's piano-based jazz trios.

5 out of 5 stars THIS SWINGS!.......2007-02-06

Like others, I originally bought the LP back in the Fifties. It was always a favourite but of course vinyl dosen't retain its quality forever. What a great surprise then to find the CD was available thru Amazon.Since receiving this updated version,I have found that the quality of this recording has not dated one bit. Unlike some CDs, every track is a winner! Andre Previn has retained the essence of these memorable compositions but at the same time has added some pretty enjoyable, but tight improvisations on piano. Meanwhile the rhythm section , compliments of Manne & Vinegar set up the perfect platform for Previn as they drive each number along like a steam engine! A GREAT recording!

4 out of 5 stars West Coast Sounds At Their Best.......2007-01-13

This was one of the earliest LP's that I bought low those many years ago when I firts began to collect jazz. When I saw it in CD formatt, I jumped to buy it. Previn, as usual is suburb. Leroy Vinneger enhances the group's sound with a solid base line: he is unabtrusively always back there. The bottom line, however, is Shelly. What a supurb drummer! Listen to how he drives the group through the songs of this great Broadway show. As an old drummer I swear that I can hear him "play" some of the melody on his instrument. Add this one to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars amazon I love you!.......2000-05-29

Have searched high & low for this album, so Amazon thank you. Andre Previn is so cool on this album along with all of the other musicians. My favorite since college days. From "On the Street Where You Live" to the end, the musical interpretation from the Broadway play is magnificant and has haunted me all these years. Can't wait to hear it again!

5 out of 5 stars An old favourite.......2000-05-14

This album was my first entre to modern jazz in 1958. I still have my original LP and it is still my most cherished. For anyone wavering about modern jazz, do not hesitate with this one. It never goes cold and never stops swinging. A must for anyones collection!

Amazon.com's Best of 2001

The appearance of "Rocket Man"-era cohorts Nigel Olsson and Davey Johnstone as backing vocalists touches this CD with one of the trademark sounds of Elton John's 1969-75 LPs. John has acknowledged those records--his most typically singer-songwriterish--occasionally, if mostly to revisit audience favorites in concert (1987's Live in Australia, a late-'90s VH1 show). But on Songs from the West Coast, his admiration of Ryan Adams and Rufus Wainwright (a guest here) inspires him to recall the stripped-down, lyric-driven sensibility of his early days. The tone of the words Bernie Taupin feeds this notorious diva is elegiac, rooted in a wearier version of the romanticism that fueled oldies as diverse as "Your Song," "Love Lies Bleeding," and "Burn Down the Mission." West Coast sidesteps bombast with a couple of exceptions; only "The Wasteland," with its invocation of Robert Johnson, is enough to provoke a dismayed "oy." The standout track is "I Want Love," a Lennonesque rumination that's their most impressive writing, separately or together, in more than a decade. --Rickey Wright

4 out of 5 stars This Train Don't Stop .......2007-07-09

On this 'record' Elton finally returns to the sound that made him a superstar in the first place. Primarily Voice, Piano and Band. Hints of Tumbleweed Connection, great songs, and most of important of all the production. Oh what a relief to hear an Elton John album that isn't completely ruined by being over-produced, like so many were in the 80's and 90's.

The only weak track for me is 'The Wasteland' which just sounds like a bit of a filler. However, one track sums this album up for me, and its "This Train Don't Stop There Anymore". This is the best single track Elton has recorded since the 70's in my opinion, and certainly in my top 10. This track would be worthy of a place on Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, or Honky Chateau.

From what I have read recently 'The Captain and The Kid' may also be a return to 70's form for Elton. If it matches this one I'll be buying it.

4 out of 5 stars The personal album.......2007-07-08

Elton John and Bernie Taupin have never been shy about baring themselves on record, even doing (now) two variations on their success with "Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy" and "The Captain and the Kid." Even parts of "Made in England" came across as autobiographical. But on "Songs From The West Coast," it really felt that Elton moved from singing about his life to singing from his life. Parts of this album moved from the personal to the depths of the soul.

This may also be the "gayest" Elton John album. The striking "American Triangle" tribute to Matthew Shepard seethes with anger and heartbreak (catch the withering blast aimed at the Phelps idiots), with the added weight of Rufus Wainwright's backing vocal. "Ballad of The Boy In The Red Shoes" is brutal in its assessment of the Reagan years and his criminally negligent ignorning of AIDS. Coming off as the hostile extension of "The Last Song" (from "The One"), Elton lashes out:

"They pushed aside our presence,
they refused to go the distance.
Back then I was Sigmund,
but that old man wouldn't listen.
Back then I was handsome.
Back then he was ignorant."

Elton has rarely been this forceful, and it makes "Songs From The West Coast" his best album of the century so far. The sound was pure Elton, mainly him and his piano backed by tasteful playing. The always valuable Paul Buckmaster, Davey Johnston and Nigel Olsson bring back echoes of the classic years (Johnstone and Olsson's backing vocals have been years underrated). There are plenty of other musical reasons to enjoy this CD. There is the usual stellar guest list; in addition to Wainwright, Stevie Wonder and the late Billy Preston make appearances. The Beatlesque "I Want Love" should have been a hit, and "This Train Don't Stop Here Anymore" is possessed of the old Elton/Bernie magic. There's even a decent blues workout with "The Wasteland."

As we move through the first decade of the 21'st Century, "Songs From The West Coast" remains the Elton CD I keep coming back to. I have enjoyed the songs on it since its release, even more so than "The Captain and The Kid" (with the exception of that album's "The Bridge," those songs are not as good as the ones here) and I have already ditched the lifeless "Peachtree Road." If there were half-stars available, I would notch this up a bit. But alas there aren't, and while good, "Songs From The West Coast" is not classic. So if the latter day Elton of "The One" and "Too Low for Zero" appealed to you, then by all means, get "Songs From The West Coast."

5 out of 5 stars Elton John continues to amaze .......2007-03-12

This seems to be an auto-biographical CD, especially "This Train Don't Stop There Anymore" and "Look Ma, No Hands." It is a very solid CD, from first to last track. No "monster radio hits" maybe, but a great mix of songs. I strongly recommend it even if you're not a fan of his.

3 out of 5 stars A Very Good CD--Wish I Could Give It 3.5 Stars.......2006-09-22

After the dismal release of The Big Picture, Songs From The West Coast is a refreshing upgrade. Beginning with this CD, Elton John began to place more focus on his albums as a whole, rather than a group of singles with filler as he's been critisized for in previous efforts. Songs From The West Coast is warm and introspective and I'm quite disappointed it didn't get the recognition it deserved at the time of it's release.

Original Sin is an absolutely beautiful love song. In my opinion, it ranks with some of the top E.J. works out there. I also really enjoy I Want Love, with it's heart wreching, desperate lyrics. Mansfield is catchy and Wasteland is one of the best rockers from Elton since the song Restless from 1984's Breaking Hearts album.

One of the nice aspects of this CD is the stripped down sound of it. Elton's voice is clear and the piano is prominant. While I enjoyed some of his earlier efforts of the 1990's like The One, the piano and Elton's voice had an over echoey sound to them. This is a very good, solid Elton John album. It's not his best work, however. People have compared it with Madman Across The Water---@ least that was the hype upon it's release. This is no Madman Across The Water.

If you would like to experience some of E.J.'s latest, more serious work, I would choose his latest release, The Captain & The Kid over this CD, however this one definately ranks in the top half of Elton's work overall in my view.

5 out of 5 stars CLASSIC ELTON ALL OVER AGAIN !.......2006-09-07

5 out of 5 stars One Of Elton's Very Best Available In A Special Two-Disk Edition.......2006-12-29

Without question, "Songs From The West Coast" is among Elton's finest albums, representing both an artistic and creative resurgence which reminded many critics and fans of his great work from the early to mid 1970s. Working with producer Patrick Leonard - who produced Elton's soundtrack for the animated film "Road to El Dorado" - this new album emphasized both Elton's splendid piano playing and some of his finest singing in years, focusing well upon his voice's deeper tonality. Elton worked with both members of his touring band - including long-time bandmates guitarist Davey Johnstone and drummer Nigel Olsson - and an excellent set of studio musicians, including legendary jazz and rock pianist Billy Preston and the young Canadian singer/songwriter Rufus Wainwright. Although the most popular song from this album was the John Lennonesque "I Want Love" (Its celebrated video, featuring actor Robert Downey Jr. lip-synching to Elton's singing, is the last track of the second disk in this special edition.), I strongly believe that the best songs from the album weren't its Billboard Top 40 hit singles. "The Wasteland", a bluesy honky tonk tribute to Mississippi Delta Blues pioneer Robert Johnson, is quite simply, the album's best, and one that should have been a hit single, featuring an elegant drum solo from Nigel Olsson and superlative keyboard playing from Billy Preston. Another notable song was Elton's and Bernie's homage to Matthew Shephard, "American Triangle", which is especially noteworthy for Rufus Wainwright's harmony vocal. And I am also quite fond of "Original Sin", which ends on a memorable Paul Buckmaster-composed violin solo that could have been played by my erstwhile friend - and fellow Brunonian - Dotty Moore, a talented New York City-based classically-trained bluegrass/country/folk violinist, who, regrettably, is wasting both her professional career and personal life with the minor league fringe community that is Brooklyn, NY's country/folk music scene, when there are other, far more lucrative, opportunities for her to demonstrate her splendid musicianship in New York City and elsewhere, with superb bluegrass, country, folk, jazz and rock musicians. The album's last song, "This Train Don't Stop There Anymore", is yet another favorite, which harkens back to the autobiographical tone of Elton's classic mid 1970s album "Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboy" (This song was a Billboard Top 40 hit here in the United States.). The bonus CD includes not only the video of "I Want Love", but several live concert recordings and studio mixes of previously unreleased material.

While jazz musicians had long drawn an essential portion of their repertoire from the Broadway stage, this jazz version of Lerner and Loewe's My Fair Lady was something new in 1956. Drummer Shelly Manne leads a trio with pianist Andre Previn and bassist Leroy Vinnegar here, and they bring a lightly sophisticated touch to the material, which had debuted just a few months before the recording. It's a testament to the quality of score and players alike that the tunes already feel like standards in their hands, both in the arrangements and in the solos. "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face" is the shimmering ballad that one might expect, but the trio applies a similar approach with almost equally successful results to the unlikely "With a Little Bit of Luck." Tempos are pushed toward the bop dimension for "Ascot Gavotte" and "Danced All Night," and Previn acquits himself well, generating imaginative lines. Vinnegar is a rock-solid timekeeper, while Manne provides brisk brush work, a lively beat, and creative accents. He's not obtrusive, but Manne's superb drumming is a focal point in this trio, highlighted by the 20-bit K2 super coding. --Stuart Broomer

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Stunning music from an under rated trio.......2004-03-07

For those of a certain age "My Fair Lady" was the definition of popular musical theatre. During it's heyday on stage and film a number of jazz ensembles added individual MFL tunes to their repetoire and a dozen or more jazz LP's covered the entire Lerner & Loewe score. (The Verve LP "Oscar Peterson Plays My Fair Lady" ranks at the very top.)

One of the best is still with us and has been gloriously remastered with the K2 20bit process. These cuts sound like they were recorded last week rather than almost 50 years ago. While Shelly Manne (who, along with bassist Leroy Vinnegar, was THE rhythm of the "West Coast Sound") is one of my favorite drummers he often "takes charge" of his groups, which is fine in his horn based quarts and quints but he can overpower a trio with ease. Here he wisely dials it back a notch or two allowing Andre Previn and Leroy Vinnegar to investigate and develop some of the most beautiful music to ever enter the American (English?) Songbook.

Previn, in particular, seem to be at home with this material. His tempo and harmonic interplay breath life and vitality into tunes that were pop hits of their day. While everyone's favorite will likely be the beautiful "On the Street Where You Live", my personal pick is the haunting and lovely "I've Grown Accustomed To Her Face" which Previn handles better than ANYONE (including the aforementioned Oscar Peterson).

The ensuing album is a true classic that has withstood the test of time. Besides being a stunning take on what many consider to be the twentieth century's finest example of musical theatre (OK, that's my opinion) it is also a testament to mid century "modern jazz" before that term became perjoritive.

      Buy this CD, it's timeless.

5 out of 5 stars More Blues from the South Side by Smokey Wilson, South Side SLim and Curtis Tillman.......2005-09-23

Good CD! I especially like 4 more Smokey Wilson selections in my collection which begin this disc. The disc also has 2 lesser known Blues Artists that are both talented. Recommend this one to compliment the rest of your Smokey Wilson material.

4 out of 5 stars Reivew of "More Blues From The South Side".......2001-05-21

"More Blues From the South Side" is a collaboration by three relatively unknown blues men from California. Smokey Wilson is probably one name the listener should be familiar with since he is a blues veteran and has released solo CD's to critical acclaim. South Side Slim is a young and up and coming blues man with an incredible voice and amazing talent on the guitar which is evident on this CD. Curtis Tillman is a blues veteran who has played bass and been the bandleader for some of the best blues musicians around. The CD starts with 4 songs written and sung by Smokey Wilson, all of these have great energy that Smokey brings to them. "My Wooman is Gone" is a great blues song with a very tasty funk type rhythm backing Smokey's fiery guitar and voice. "Talk to Me" keeps the pace going with a nice slow shuffle pace with once again amazing guitar by Smokey "I Know What You've Been Thinking" adds a some great sax work by Bill Clark who really burns on this song. "One Day You're Going To Know Me" is a slow simmering blues that allows Smokey to play with a lot of feeling and emotion. The next three songs are sung and written by South Side Slim who brings the different aspects you can find on his solo CD's to the table on these songs. "Seven Days" is dedicated to the memory of Gary Graham and has a distorted rockish type of blues that is pushed along with emotional singing from Slim. "BB Is The King" is a tribute to BB King with some guitar work by Smokey imitating BB style perfectly with a little flare of his own. "Country Road" is a great acoustic song with Slim on the Guitar and Tetsuyu Nakamura following the riffs along on harmonica. The combination works very well and makes this song standout on the disc. The next 2 out of 3 songs are sung and written by Curtis Tillman with the traditional "Confucious" standing out. "Confucious" is a song allowing Curtis and the musician to have a good time with a smile on their faces. "Angola Blues" is a slow blues allowing the beauty of Curtis' voice to come out along with the Sax of Bill Clark to shine. " Going Home Tomorrow" is a song with the story of a failed relationship that leaves the narrator leaving his lover. This song has a kind of tempo and guitar playing reminiscent of Guitar Slim, again with some beautiful Sax playing by Bill Clark. This CD highlights three lesser known of the blues men and after hearing this CD it is hard to understand why that is. Each performer on this CD has their own style and they all meld together well. The only person to play on all the songs of the headliners is South Side Slim who plays rhythm guitar on the tracks by Smokey and rhythm and lead on Curtis'. He also plays lead on his own except for "BB Is The King". This CD should not be missed and you won't be dissapointed with it.
