It's a shame that only one side of Elvis' multi-faceted talent is remembered 25 years on from his death but there is so much more to the millennium's greatest performer than garish jump suits and shaky legs. The 50 Greatest Love Songs reminds us what a great singer Presley was; coming from the heart with more feeling and passion than most could ever imagine, all 50 of these songs are classics of the last four decades. The double disc set includes all the up-tempo standards like the incredible "Suspicious Minds", "I just can't help believin'" and "Always On My Mind" plus the Dusty Springfield signature tune "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me". Also included are some of his older works from before and during the cinema years like "Good Luck Charm", "Love Me Tender" and "Old Shep". So no blue shoes, no sequinned jump suits, just the king singing about life, love and heartache. --Georgina Collins

5 out of 5 stars So wonderful to hear again!.......2007-07-05

This is a wonderful album....brought back so many memories from my youth. Elvis' voice is so sexy and soothing and perfect for these songs. Well done CD...clear and very good sound.

5 out of 5 stars One awsome CD.......2007-05-15

Enough said. One awsome CD! Buy it.
If you love Elvis, you'll love this CD.

5 out of 5 stars The 50 Greatest Love Songs.......2007-04-15

I am a huge Elvis fan, especially his love songs and gospel music. This CD is excellent and is a very comprehensive collection of his love songs. Even songs that were made famous by other artists, are sung well by him. His renditions are a pleasure to listen to. There is only one Elvis!

1 out of 5 stars Not worth it........2007-01-23

Recordings sound like they were all done the same day,
in as little time as possible, with the least amount
of studio talent. Terrible.

2 out of 5 stars Fifty Fifty.......2007-01-11

About half the songs are great old songs I'm familiar with, the other half are songs made famous by other artists and most are clangers for Elvis that are painful to listen to.

One more in Broadway's series of "jukebox musicals" (Mamma Mia, Movin' Out, Jersey Boys, etc.), All Shook Up features the songs of Elvis Presley. Cheyenne Jackson stars as Chad, the guitar-playing, pelvis-swiveling, blue-suede-shoe-wearing roustabout who arrives to shake up a mid-America town that's so buttoned up it forbids public necking, interracial dating, and loud music. Various romantic entanglements arise among Chad, grease-monkey/tomboy Natalie (Jenn Gambatese), her father (Jonathan Hadary), her friend Lorraine (Nikki M. James) and her mother (Sharon Wilkins), her best buddy (Mark Price), the mayor (Alix Korey), and the sexy new museum caretaker (Leah Hocking). The rest of the plot? Well, that's pretty much it, as the characters mostly run around trying to figure out who they're in love with, fitting in excuses to sing such Elvis hits as "Jailhouse Rock," "Can't Help Falling in Love," and "Don't Be Cruel." Jackson won the lead shortly after arriving on Broadway by way of Seattle community theater, then took a role in the movie of United 93. --David Horiuchi

3 out of 5 stars Elvis Does Broadway Well.......2007-01-05

The music in this show is great. They didn't hire some Elvis impersonator to come and do this show. These are Elvis songs that have been reinvented in a musical theater style, and they sound great. That being said, just from listening to this CD you get very little about the actual plot of the musical. After reading the synopsis you can listen and understand what is going on, but just popping this CD in without glancing at the production notes will lead you to musical theater Elvis songs. I really enjoyed the music on this CD. Some of the voices need a little work, but overall my toe was tapping and my head was bopping. Good for new musical fans, as well as musical collectors. Probably not good for Elvis purists. Favorite song: "Teddy Bear/Hound Dog"

1 out of 5 stars We're left not right, and Elvis Presley Is Gone .......2006-08-09

If you like songs recorded and performed by Elvis Presley, this Compact Disc may not be to your music liking.
Despite the #1 HIT record title, there is no song by Elvis Presley. There are no images/pictures of Elvis Presley.
In minimized text on the back of the CD there is:
"Inspired by and featuring the songs of Elvis Presley."
The CD is fom SONY and BMG 2005 issue, RCA who released the title song is not mentioned. Also, there seems to be no 33/1/3
12" vinyl record album for this title. The music industry has created something out of nothing. I started enjoying Elvis Presley in October 1957 "Jailhouse Rock", and it still does, but this ALL SHOOK UP seems bogus, without songs by Elvis Presley.
>The cartoon cover is cute, but Elvis Presley is missing.
For Elvis Presley singing his #1 hits, there are none on this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Fun.......2006-03-01

Once I saw that this musical was had a soundtrack cd, I just had to have it!! I saw this play on broadway in NYC and fell in love with it even though I didn't know any Elvis music. This is such a fun soundtrack and keeps you singing and dancing along.

5 out of 5 stars A Rollicking Good Time.......2005-12-08

Over the summer I got to experience the Broadway show All Shook Up and it was highly enjoyable. Because critics don't like shows that are based off unoriginal music, they missed the point of All Shook Up. It was a fantastic tribute to one of the greatest singers of all time.

The cast of the show puts every ounce of energy behind the songs and fills them with such zest and pep that it is impossible not to see the charm. Some of the best numbers come when the cast all join in together in such ensemble efforts like "Heartbreak Hotel" and "Can't Help Falling in Love" to produce rousing chorus numbers. The voice talent matches expectations for the songs, as Cheyenne Jackson nails a good mix of Elvis with roustabout charisma in his spotlight songs like "Roustabout" and "C'Mon Everybody."

What the show does a fantastic job of is mixing up the songs, how they are song, and the different voice talent put into each piece. There is a wonderful cross of "Teddy Bear" and "Hound Dog" (words are changed around to make it work), that is fun back and forth song.

The same can be said for "Don't Be Cruel", which is one of the best adaptations of Elvis' songs. It mixes cool, slick, and humor to give another quick duet, back and forth piece to the show.

In short, there are so many fun songs on this CD that you won't be able to stop listening to it for weeks. There is so much charm and energy in each song that you'll feel a little remorse for not seeing it on Broadway (yes, it's run is over), or for not going to go see it again.

So...C'mon everybody and clap your hands right now...

5 out of 5 stars LOVE IT!!!.......2005-09-27

I bought this after seeing only a commercial for it. I absolutely LOVE Elvis Presley, and I absolutely LOVE broadway...so this is a perfect combination! The songs are all high energy, and the harmonies are perfect. I haven't seen the actual show, but the first chance I get I will see it. The talent in this show is so amazing. The songs are great. It's just a beautiful musical.

5 out of 5 stars Peacefulness.......2006-08-25

Great Elvis recording. All songs are recorded with the same cadence - the same basic beat. Mostly slow, yet with Elvis's trademark soaring voice. We played this CD over and over again as my father, an Elvis and gospel fan, lay dying. It brought peace to all of us. I highly recommend this particular recording for anyone going through a difficult time. Just listen to the samples and you'll see what I mean!

4 out of 5 stars Great recordings.......2006-08-11

Elvis really shined when he record Gospel songs. He sang them from the heart. The songs on here are great, however it only includes 12 songs. Several other Elvis Gospel CDs are available that include more songs and would give you a better value for your money.

Elvis Presley was perceived as a country music newcomer in 1954, albeit an unorthodox one. In later years, regardless of how much pop fluff and insipid movie fare he recorded, country remained a vital touchstone. This generously programmed collection (including five previously unissued alternate takes) serves as a powerful reminder. It begins with the Sun recordings of "I Forgot to Remember to Forget" and "Blue Moon of Kentucky" and samples Elvis's rocking, early RCA versions of beloved country tunes "When My Blue Moon Turns to Gold Again" and his childhood favorite, "Old Shep." Elvis drew from all over the spectrum, covering Eddy Arnold's 1947 hit, "I'll Hold You in My Heart," along with the later "Green, Green Grass of Home," "Help Me Make It Through the Night," and "He'll Have to Go." A newer country cover, of Jerry Reed's "Guitar Man," returned him to the hard-rocking style that many feared he'd abandoned. By drawing from across the board, this set offers a vital look at an often-underappreciated side of Presley. --Rich Kienzle

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars His best single CD country collection!.......2006-09-07

This is Elvis' best single CD collection of country tunes. It covers the entire span of his career, from his early days at Sun right on through the 70's. This collection includes several alternate versions of songs not available anywhere else, including the 1981 remix version of "Guitar Man" which was a top 30 hit in the US and went all the way to number 1 on the country music chart!

Highly recommended if you like country music.

4 out of 5 stars My, it's been a long, long time........2006-01-03

Obviously, this is a collection of country songs recorded by Elvis Presley. Elvis had a great affinity for country music, having grown up in Memphis. These 24 songs are fine examples of Elvis' love for country music. The main attractions here, from a serious Elvis fan's standpoint, are the previously unreleased alternate takes of five songs. This album also marked the first appearance on CD of the 1980 remix of "Guitar Man". The story behind the remix is: producer Felton Jarvis erased the backing track to the song, and gave it a new backing track to make it sound like an '80s country song, which ironically makes it sound more dated than the original version. Anyway, this is a solid collection of songs that Elvis fans will enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE ELVIS.......2006-01-01

I enjoyed all of Elvis' songs. Especially his "jiving" as he sang. I did not know he recorded any Country Songs. Being a devoted Country fan since about 1937, well, maybe 1938, I don't know how I missed this one. You can't go wrong with Elvis.

5 out of 5 stars The Definitive Overview............2004-09-05

This review is written mainly to refute some points made by the other reviewers who are quite mistaken. This CD was not a quick release to cash in on 30 #1 Hits....in fact, it was actually released in 1996 - a full 7 years before 30 #1 Hits! Some fact checking is in order, folks. Ignore the reviewer who said Kentucky Rain and Always On My Mind don't fit in. Both are seamlessly integrated into the tracklist (let's not forget Willie Nelson's cover was a much bigger hit on the country chart than the pop chart and the fact that the Pet Shop Boys covered it - turning it into a disco hit - has no bearing on its country roots.). If you enjoy this, I recommend his 1971 Elvis Country (I'm 10,000 Years Old) CD....but this is for those who want an overview and it does the job in spades. The only song that does not really work is "He'll Have To Go" because Elvis tried to be too faithful to the Jim Reeves original. Elvis almost always relied on his own instincts in covering a song and this one feels like he's trying to be ol' Jim. But this is still an essential CD.

3 out of 5 stars A Little Bit Country, A Little Bit Rock & Roll.......2003-10-23

"Elvis: Great Country Classics" is BMG's latest attempt to validate Elvis's influence beyond the boundary of the rock and roll by packaging a collection of tunes rooted in the country music genre. The 24 song compilation captures the full scope of the King's career from the early 1950s to the late 1970s. Tracks like "I Forgot to Remember to Forget" and "Blue Moon of Kentucky" depict a young Presley (a singer obviously influenced by the country music foundation germaine to his native South) successfully making the leap from country/blues to rockability/rock and roll. Before our very ears, Elvis transitions from a country music neophyte to innovative rock star. With songs like "He'll Have to Go" and "Green, Green Grass of Home," an older Elvis effectively revisits his musical foundation...in essence, the quintessential rocker becomes the consummate country crooner. Several of the CD's tracks prove Elvis could hold his own with any of the leading country stars of the era. Presley's powerful cover of Hank Williams' "Your Cheatin' Heart" and equally strong performances on "I'll Hold You in My Heart" and the Jim Reeves standard, "I Really Don't Want to Know" leave little doubt Elvis could light up the Grand Ole Opry with the same intensity he could rock the roof off of Madison Square Garden. Most of the remaining tracks add credibility to Presley's standing as a bona fide country music artist although Elvis falters in his attempt to cover Glen Campbell's "Gentle on My Mind." Likewise, "Kentucky Rain," a 1970 release that hit the Top 20 on the pop music charts seems out of place in this collection...perhaps included because it was penned by the late country star Eddie Rabbit. The wonderful ballad "Always on My Mind" is another question mark...true, Elvis took it to Number 16 on the Country charts in 1972, but for all intents and purposes, it's a mainstream tune that Willie Nelson, and then a few years later, the Pet Shop Boys, covered and placed on the pop charts in the 1980s. While "KR" and "AOMM" shouldn't have been included in this collection, several songs were omitted that bear mention. Of note, 1979's "There's a Honky Tonk Angel" and the 1981 release "Lovin' Arms." Both tracks are genuine country and each record hit the Top Ten on the Country charts in their respective years. Additionally, including "Faded Love," "Tomorrow Never Comes," "Early Mornin' Rain," and "Just Pretend" would have significantly enhanced the country flavor of this effort. Lastly, "EGCC" ends on a very high note with the inclusion of "Guitar Man." Recorded by Elvis in 1967, it was a very modest pop hit the same year. RCA resurrected the song in 1981 - revamped with new Jerry Reed guitar licks - and the posthumous release became Elvis's final Country chart topper, hitting Number 1!

5 out of 5 stars An Absolute Treasure!.......2003-05-02

I have been an Elvis fan since I was a little girl. I have always been partial to the ballads from ANY singer. I found this beautiful collection at our local Cracker Barrel restaurant and knew it was a "Must have".

I have not been the least bit disappointed! I mainly purchased this album (on CD) because of the song, "Angel" from the wonderful movie, "Follow That Dream", one of the few really good movies Elvis was "allowed" to do.

I found the scene in which "Angel" was sung to be very romantic. For years I have looked for an album with this beautiful song on it, and finally my efforts have paid off.( I used to have the original motion picture soundtrack from Follow That Dream, but it was lost in a flood.)

This entire collection is great! From Elvis' very early "Love Me Tender" to more modern hits such as "Woman Without Love", this whole collection just shines. Some of Elvis' greatest hits are in here. Songs I haven't heard in years.

This is a very romantic album. Something to listen to with someone you love, by a cozy fireside on a cold winter's night.

I am so glad someone thought to put these songs together in one very lovely album. A nice little information booklet accompanies this collection, with interesting backgrounds on some of the songs.

At last I can put "Angel" on the stereo and listen to it over and over, all I want. I never get tired of it either. I would have to say that "Angel" is my personal favorite of all the "Love Songs" the King ever recorded.

I highly recommend this CD for all Elvis fans.

    Thank you,
    Alice B. Kane

      4 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Diverse.......2004-08-07

Here's a novel concept - a 14-track compilation of the original versions of tunes Elvis made popular. In a nod to his catholic tastes, this volume brings together artists as diverse as Bill Monroe ("Blue Moon of Kentucky"), the Shelton Brothers ("Just Because"), the Drifters ("Money Honey"), Leon Payne ("I Love You Because"), Little Junior Parker ("Mystery Train"), Smiley Lewis ("One Night"), Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup ("That's All Right") and Arthur Gunter ("Baby, Let's Play House"). The songs are sequenced chronologically and stop just prior to his induction into the U.S. Army in 1958. A fascinating look at the source material behind Elvis' rise to fame. - Cub Koda, AMG

      5 out of 5 stars Sweet inspiration.......2003-07-26

This CD contains the original versions of song later covered by Elvis Presley. It shows that Elvis had great taste in music. All of the songs included here are really excellent. It shows the wide range of music Elvis liked. It includes blues, country, r & b, rockabilly and pop. The only complaint that I can make about this CD is that they could have included a lot more songs. For example, they could have included the original versions of "Milkcow Blues", "My Baby Left Me", "Love Me", "Old Shep" and "Peace in the Valley". Other than that, I highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars The devil in Nylon hose.......2001-10-20

When listening to this c.d one realises Elvis was a natural genius.I wonder if i would enjoy the songs as much if I hadn't listened to Elvis'versions first. Many people argue that Elvis didn't write his own songs. But the point is what he did with these songs creating different music styles. The originals are also very good and worth having in your collection to compare & gage where music was before the Hillbilly Cat.

      4 out of 5 stars Fascinatin' record.......2001-02-11

Any way you come at this one, it's good value. As plain music, it's a terrific selection of the music around at that time(early '50s), both varied, from the stunning country jump of the Shelton Brothers' "Just Because" to the honk of Big Joe Turner on "Shake Rattle And Roll" (fatty Haley orta be ashamed),and yet at the same time strangely cohesive as a disk to listen to. I play just cause I like it all the time. But the real fascination comes in hearing where Elvis took these songs. Sometimes I play "Sunrise", with Elvis' versions of these songs as recorded at Sun, straight after, and you hear what he took, and what he had. You come away understanding what magic there was in the combination of Elvis, Scotty Moore, Bill Black and Sam Phillips. But you can also sense that the breakout that Elvis made was built on a huge underswell of outstanding music that just had to find a bigger audience.

5 out of 5 stars The King Lives.......1999-10-19

I admire Elvis and this is the BEST! It has some of his best songs. Also, this CD easily shows why Elvis will always be the king. You can observe that it is a mixture of his unsurpassed talent. Elvis the very definitive of pure rock and roll. This collection of songs demonstrate just how timeless this man is. Elvis was always a leader and a trendsetter. He is often imitated but never equaled. As you listen to these great tunes and you will realize that Elvis is just as much with us today as in years gone by and he will be with us for always.

      5 out of 5 stars Pardon me.......2004-08-30

This is the second volume of "the original versions of songs later recorded by Elvis Presley". It includes songs that Elvis did from after his army induction, until near the end of his life. The songs here are all really good, and one can see what attracted Elvis to this material. It's interesting to compare the original versions to Elvis's remakes (assuming you wouldn't buy this if you weren't familar with the Elvis versions of these songs). In some cases the original version is better, and in some cases Elvis surpassed the original, although of course that is a matter of personal taste. I really enjoyed hearing the original versions of all these songs, but I do wish they had included more than 14 songs. Some other songs they could have included would be the original versions of: "Bossa Nova Baby", "Witchcraft", "U.S. Male", "Suspicious Minds", "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me", "I Really Don't Want to Know", "An American Trilogy", "Burning Love", "Steamroller Blues", "I've Got a Thing About You Baby", "My Boy" and "Hurt". But I would still recommend this CD to Elvis fans.

4 out of 5 stars Fascinating Series .......2004-08-15

Volume Two of this fascinating series delves into the tunes Elvis recorded and covered after being inducted into the military in 1958 and finishing with his last Top 15 hit in the 1970s, Chuck Berry's "Promised Land." Sequenced chronologically, the highlights include Ketty Lester's "Love Letters," Hank Snow's "A Fool Such As I," Lowell Fulson's "Reconsider Baby," Tommy Tucker's "High Heel Sneakers," Jack Greene's "There Goes My Everything," Jimmy Reed's "Big Boss Man" and Jerry Reed's "Guitar Man." Another fascinating collection that shows off both Elvis' wide-ranging tastes and his ability to jump between styles with consummate ease. - Cub Koda, AMG

4 out of 5 stars The collection of the King before He sang them.......2000-10-14

As most Elvis fans, we like to see where Elvis got some of his music. Alot we know was wrote for him, but some he sang of others, that they performed before he did them. It is a nice way to see how the original person sang the song before Elvis took over and made it a hit, or a hit again. I really enjoyed listening to this CD and also knowing where it came from, and then to listen to Elvis sing them, that is when you begin to appreciate the distictive and different ways he sang, he had a voice that would go thru many different keys, a macho sound, a airy rispy sound, to the dark soleumn sound. He learned that thru training his voice while in the army. Hope you will enjoy this. I sure did.. Try it.
