Soul Strike!
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
The name of this group makes this release seem like a calypso record, which it isn't. The sound is more like a lost Meters album from 1969, which it isn't quite either. The credits imply that the band is from Finland, which it definitely isn't. Soul Strike! is actually an exercise in New Orleans-style instrumental workouts from the Soul Fire crew, New York's resident retro-funk chameleons (the same people behind J.D. & the Evil's Dynamite Band, the Soul Providers, etc.). It's a delicious and unbelievably convincing pastiche of vintage Meters, right down to the guitar and organ tone. Half the fun is figuring out which early funk classics yielded its borrowed riffs ("Struggling My Way," for instance, is a cousin to Sly and the Family Stone's "Sing a Simple Song"). The other half of the fun is kicking back and surrendering to the groove. And DJs looking for a fresh beat can take their pick of the crisp, inventive breaks here. --Douglas Wolk

Is Sarah McLachlan a secret punk rocker? To be sure, her rebellion is hushed. On Afterglow, her first studio album since 1997's Surfacing, McLachlan's music is as tempered as ever; at times even the piano chords at the heart of the sound are tucked neatly beneath layer upon layer of strings and overdubbed voices. Listen to what's being sung within this soothing aural bed, though, and hear the just-before-sleep murmurings of the quietest riot grrl: "I'm a train wreck waiting to happen.... a wildfire born of frustration," "How stupid could I be.... you're no good for me, but you're the only one I see," "I have to push just to see how far you'll go." The latter song ("Push") resolves itself with the assurance, "You complete me." Ultimately, McLachlan fans will be comforted again by what turns out to be her reliably untroubled aesthetic. --Rickey Wright

"I know you can't resist, trying to re-open a sore...".......2007-05-08
Afterglow by Sarah McLachlan is surprisely moving and wonderfully produced. I am not normally a McLachlan super-fan but some of her songs before this album are quite engaging. I decided to give this album a chance, standout tracks include: Time, Perfect Girl, Dirty Little Secret, Stupid, and Answer. Sarah's voice has improved and her lyrics are at its strongest. I could listen to the track, Time all day long, it sucks you in after the first 20 seconds, amazing! So whether you hate or love her, Afterglow will have you bathed in it for awhile. Enjoy!
afterglow.......2007-03-27
delivered in good shape and timely. and I love the cd its great music.
Another great CD from Sarah McLachlan.......2007-02-20
I particularly enjoyed this CD - as inspired an endeavor as Mirrorball.
love it.......2007-02-15
I know that this review won't be very helpful, all I can say is that I love this album. Been listening to it for a couple of years now, and it's a fave when I'm in a mood to be mellow. I am giving this five stars so that amazon will recommend more music like this in my personal recommendations. Same with Fumbling Toward Ecstasy.
Classic Sarah.......2007-02-06
I can listen to this CD over and over and still find it refreshing and beautiful. Sarah's songs are soothing to my soul.

This set compiles much of DJ Shadow's pre-major label material in one convenient package in an attempt to foil bootleggers and bring new fans up-to-date in the curriculum. The results are naturally varied, but all point to a marvelous evolution of talent. The collection is kept together primarily by its propensity for jazzy beats and psychedelic loops. Shadow (né Josh Davis) moves through everything from old school funk ("In/Flux") to grungy '60s-style guitar raveups ("High Noon"). The centerpiece of the set, however, is a four-part composition called "What Does Your Soul Look Like," which is likely to be the first ever entirely sample-driven rock opera. It's a brilliant piece of work, laced with intriguing sounds, sound bites, and a detectable set of motion. It is also quite possibly better than anything on the critically -acclaimed Entroducing. --Aidin Vaziri
Customer Reviews:
What Josh Davis' Soul Looks Like.......2005-05-04
Enough with the arguments. Everyone knows what Shadow's best tracks are. Some of them are on Entroducing. Some are on Preemptive Strike. A couple are on Private Press. He also did some real magic with James Lavelle on Psyence Fiction. And almost all of his best are on In Tune and On Time.
But if you look at In Tune and On Time, his live album, as a reflection of what Shadow is most proud of and what he is most "into" at the time, it seems pretty clear to me that he is 1) enamored with his recent work (Private Press), but 2) still sees his vision as a product of his early musical conceptions. It is these early musical conceptions (and some revamped ones) that you get with Preemptive Strike.
I am a huge Shadow fan and have been for a long time. blah, blah, . . . I was fortunate enough to see him perform the In Tune set live at Stubbs in Austin when he toured for the release of Private Press. Shadow is a showman extraordinairre and I was blown away. The amount of brilliance that went into his visuals and track order have seen few equals. I remember that he dropped the first track (Fixed Income) after the following words:
"The most important thing for me is that you know how much I appreciate you and have a good time. You see, I view you, the fans, as my employers, and this is my resume . . ."
This kind of humilty and appreciation is sadly missing in most musicians.
Therefore I don't think that it is out of line to view In Tune as a reflection of his own view on his career. The two clear winners are Private Press and Preemptive Strike. Private Press can be explained by recency, but I think the reason that Shadow still plays so much Preemptive Strike is because it still reflects how he views himself.
As much as I love Endtroducing (Building Steam, Midnight, and Stem/Long Stem are clearly some of his best), Preemptive Strike is no less essential listening. Between In Flux, High Noon, and Organ Donor, you have as much of a concentration of greatness as the best tracks on Endtroducing. And then there is What Does Your Soul Look Like, which is like a warm blanket, flowing, changing, and walking you through Shadow's own soul. Just amazing. It seems incredibly ironic to me that Preemptive Strike seems to flow more smoothly than Endtroducing, despite it being a chronological compilation of previous endeavors.
My point is not to pick a fight between Entroducing and Preemptive Strike (or fuel the existing battle), but to encourage any fan of DJ Shadow to make sure Preemptive Strike is on your absolute shortest list of must own albums. Do not underestimate this album because of its origins. Camel Bobsled Race is also great; getting a chance to hear Q-Bert remix/compile Shadow is a treat.
I also think that Psyence Fiction is essential, and it is pretty clear that Shadow likes those tracks too. Also don't miss the bootleg of him live in Austin or his old Soulside tracks. Product Placement is a fun mix, too.
Some of the Best Music I Have Ever Heard.......2005-04-10
I had never heard of DJ Shadow and had no idea what trip-hop, acid jazz or the like was when I initially listened to this album in 1998 at Karma Records in West Lafayette, Indiana. Thank all supernatural beings that someone on the staff there had placed 'Preemptive Strike' in the listening booth thingy. Upon sampling a few tracks through the store-supplied headphones, I purchased the CD and have been a Shadow fan ever since. I am coming to realize that I almost always enjoy artists' early work better than anything that comes later. That is not to discredit ANY of Dj Shadow's or any other musician's newer music, but there is just something about an artist's first round of music.
I had gone several years without hearing this CD, due to extenuating circumstances, but it has moved me to the point of joyous tears to behold its splendor once again. It is the quintessential Shadow album. Its varied paces, melodies, and elements combined with the beautiful drums make for a magnificent soundscape that should be shared with anyone worthy.
Music for the Minority.......2005-01-04
This is for purists. This is for travelers on the journey of Dj Shadow, because it takes study and an open mind to appreciate this record. It is a digression back to the old school, but this is Dj Shadow's classroom. It radiates with the layered, entrancing, subtle, and spiritual style that only he brings to the vinyl. Josh Davis(Shadow) is an artist who has stayed fresh from then until now, but this album is like a timeless interlude, a trailmark and a tribute, because the meat of this album, `What Does Your Soul Look Like`-and for me, the title says it all- is his meditation on music. Be aware, the true value of this record is something you really have to listen for.
the Intro to Shadow for Buddhists.......2004-06-03
This record is getting ripped on by a couple of reviewers for not being Endtroducing... or Private Press. They all agree that High Noon and Organ Donor are all that make this cd worth having and that is some straight-up bull$!@#. This was my introduction to Shadow and it might have taken a little while to really sink in, but it hooked me on his music and made me vow to pick up everything he laid his lily white hands upon. This record is like Neitzche's void opening up in your mind and fixing its dark gaze right into the center of you. I've just heard Joseph Campbell mention that poetry is a metaphor for all the mysteries of existence and this for me is a transcendent poem that has helped glimpse behind the mask of the mysteries.
Preemptive Strike is mostly slow and plodding, but each beat dropped lands right in the center of my head. It builds and builds, creating mischief from disparate sources of sound, weaving together a web that seems to form a story that you could almost make out if some of the pieces weren't missing. Some of the most affecting spoken samples are from "Johnny Got His Gun", as I later found out. Go see that movie if you like this record. If you enjoy "Diamond Sea" by Sonic Youth, "1983..." by Jimi Hendrix or "Revolution #9" by the Beatles, give this record a couple of spins through a pair of huge headphones.
Ehh..........2004-04-17
Let me just say that my indtroduction to DJ Shadow has been really strange in comparison that of others. The first CD I got of his was The Private Press. While I loved it, it made Endtroducing, which I bought months later, sound dated. While it has since grown on me, for a while, I thought The Private Press was better.
This CD is by far the least inspiring of the stuff I've heard of Shadow's. The music is too sparse of many of the songs, I find. In Flux is just drums for the first 3 minutes, and while I've always found Shadow's percussion to be very robust and refreshing, I don't think it's enough to make a whole song.
The "What Does Your Soul Look Like" series was nice, the first one (in order, not how it's numbered on the box) being the best to me. But I was less than impressed that Shadow decided to put part 4 and part 1 on, both of which I'd heard on Endtroducing, and with only minimal changes to keep my interest.
But "High Noon" is a great track, reminiscent of Spaghetti Westerns (explaining the title), and the remix to Organ Donor is also good, and it's fresh enough that it doesn't remind me too much of the original.
Overall, this piece is the least of Shadow's work, in my opinion. Of course, much of it was earlier stuff, and he may not have found his niche until after it's completion. I'm still a big Shadow fan, and I will still buy his next album. Just hope I don't have to wait another 2 years for it.

This boxed set is by far one of the best purchases I have ever made. As a Purcell freak, this hits every button I have. The cast of characters include the inequitable Robert King, New College Choir, Bowman, and a host of other venerable persons. Likewise the attention to period performance of these works makes it an essential addition to the library of any serious anglophile/Musicologist etc. Now if only the Britten Realizations of all Purcell's songs could be recorded alongside the originals! You will Love this set!

This remarkable collection of choral music by Baltic composers opens our ears to both their similarities and differences. There are folk influences aplenty (from Veijo Tormis in particular), but also some surprises. Sven-David Sandstrom's "Hear my prayer" takes Purcell's piece of the same name as a jumping-off point, and although his treatment is modern, the lamentation remains vivid. Arvo Part's history of Jesus' genealogy, sung in English, is almost fun in its seemingly endless repetition of "which was the son of," while Rautavaara's four-part, seven-minute Lorca Suite is a fascinating study in miniatures. Vasks's "Dona nobis pacem" (the only piece with orchestral accompaniment) has a hypnotic downward vocal sequence that contrasts with the rising strings. The other works hold the interest as well, and the ubiquitous and gifted Paul Hillier leads the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir in lush performances. Fans of the great Eastern choral tradition won't want to miss this. --Robert Levine
Customer Reviews:
Great 20th century choral music.......2007-02-07
This first volume of Baltic Voices, performed by the highly acclaimed Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir, is a pure enjoyment for any fans of choral music as well as those interested in folk music. All pieces on this CD were pretty much written in the 20th century, starting with Cyrillus Kreek's enchanting Psalms of David (1923), sung in Estonian, and ending with Arvo Pärt's world premiere recording of "...which was the son of..." (2000)-- a fascinating, yet simple, depiction of the geneaology of Jesus from the Gospel of Luke (performed in English). Veljo Tormis does a beautiful job blending the old folk music themes with some new motives in the Latvian Bourdon Songs (1982). And there is much more to discover from other composers... The singing, the sound, and the recording are simply beautiful. The accompanying booklet offers additional details as well as translations.
Some enchanting music.......2006-12-08
Several tracks on this album are absolutely incredible.
I heard the first track (Bless the Lord, O My Soul) by chance on NPR one evening and was immediately spellbound by its unique phrasing.
The last track (Dona Nobis Pacem), aided by a climactic interplay of voice and string, stung me with a beautiful sensation which reaffirmed to my soul that music captures the reason for being alive.
As a newcomer to choral music, I cannot compare this work to many others. However, I can wholeheartedly declare that this album will appeal to those that kneel in humility to the beauty of the human voice.
Impeccable performances, soothing music.......2005-05-26
The very first time I heard a recording from this CD was on NPR several years ago, and it featured excerpts from the Cyrillus Kreek piece. Needless to say, I was in awe of what I heard and consequently had to get the CD. It was one of the most worthwhile purchases I ever made!
The choir performs with ubiquitous energy and notable vigor when a selection would require it. Furthermore, there are many contrasting works featured on this disc, from the ethereal Cyrillus Kreek selection, to the folk-inspired Spring Song and other, more avant-garde repertoire.
It may be the case that one will not instantly fall in love with every single track on this disc, but I would make a case for the fact that there are a number of universally appealing choral works on this disc that, next to the somewhat affordable price, would certainly warrant the purchase!
Ethereally amazing.......2004-07-02
Many composers from Baltic countries round out this incredible compact disc, sung by a collection of excellent voices. The vocal blending is tremendous, despite isolation of the voices over several parts in, at times, serious dissonance. The music is so haunting, I must say I've listened to it nearly every day since I bought it. I witnessed their concert in Houghton, New York last fall, and immediately bought both this CD and the Powers of Heaven.
Not great..........2004-03-17
Full choral sound, sounding very strident at times. Oddly, the recorded singing sounds distinctly enhanced, giving it a less than natural sound. The repertoire represented on this CD is hit and miss - some good, some unremarkable.

Black Box LOL.......2003-10-21
I remember hearing "Everybody" on the radio and I loved it. Then a little while later, I saw it performed on Soul Train. Even at the ripe old age of 9, I knew that the French chick who couldn't speak a lick of English, lip-synching the lyrics, wasn't the one who recorded the vocals. It was so funny because my mother was like, "Now they need to be ashamed of themselves! Anyone with a brain in their heads, knows that that's Martha Wash's voice!" And sure enough, Ms. Wash filed a lawsuit against the record company. But all silliness aside, the music was damn good!
Great Writers...Awesome Singer.......2002-02-03
Back in the hayday of vinyl and all it's glory came some soulful, yet very danceable club music. Born into mainstream became the writers and more importantly the singer attributed to Black Box. Perhaps one of the most unknown talents in this world; Martha Wash carries and dominates this album with her soulful and beautiful voice. Though not into "top 10" pop music, some of the singles on this album did just that...made it into the charts. Classics for me are "I Don't Know Anybody Else" with it's danceable groove...I often close my eyes and can see myself on the dance floor. I've just started my CD collection and this is one of the first one's I sought after. I just wish the writers and Martha would hook up again.

I don't know how I heard about this band (back in 1995) but I bought this CD (The Greatest Hits) and it was soon my number one workout CD. I still can listen to it and never tire of the songs. As a dance music collector and part time DJ, this CD would get everyone out there and feeling good. The music isn't too disco-y, too techno or too rap. It's got solid musical writing/playing, great percussion and great singing by the female vocalist! She's so good I"m surprised she hasn't been nabbed by another band. I can only say I wish there was more Black Box music. I have a hundred dance cds (from the 70s through '01) and this is one of the best music in my collection.
I realize the wonderful vocalist did not authorize her tracks to be used. Well, I'm not privy to all the hi-jinks. But, apparently there were many. At any rate, the woman can sing. She can soar with her voice. She makes the songs. So, Miss Diva, if they did they did wrong by you (and I don't know the story, I'm just a music lover), you still sound incredible. I don't think this is a reason to pass up on one of the best dance albums made. The woman's voice is one-in-a-lifetime and the band is awesome, too. I guess there is a lot of drama behind the scenes those not in the biz don't really know about. We hear the music. But, I know it is a tough biz.
Black Box featuring Loleatta Holloway and Martha Wash.......2000-09-01
Black Box did some of the BEST dance music of the era!
They had three hits on Billboard Hot 100:
song;date of entry;# weeks on chart; highest position
1 Everybody Everybody; 08-04-1990; 19; 8;
2 I Don't Know Anybody Else; 12-08-1990; 14; 23;
3 Strike It Up; 04-06-1991; 18; 8
"Ride On Time" is a classic. . .
Who is the girl on the cover on the album "Dreamland? It's NOT one of the singers! But she's pretty hot!!

Finland Posse.......2005-01-24
Some fresh funk from Helsinski
recorded in mono to be vintage...
Great sound, great band.
4.5 Solid, Old-School Funk.......2002-06-01
Twelve killers on this disk, not a weak moment among them. It could've been passed off as a lost Meters record, or a Reuben Wilson & JBs session from 1969. Nasty, sleazy funk. Listen to this for a while, then ask yourself if you'd let your sister date any of these guys. I wouldn't. That bass player's got a real filthy mind.
Just so you Know!!!.......2002-01-16
This band ARE from FINLAND, and they now have their own (finnish) record label called Timmion.
Dont let this put you off though, it is an awesome slice of late 60's/early 70's Meters styled funk. Drums, Bass, Guitar and Hammond and a whole lot of soul.
They are part of the Deep Funk scene who record using anologue only equipment to reproduce that live, tough and raw sound (as oppossed to the tiringly overproduced stuff that you're all used to hearing). This is not the best Deep Funk album by some way but it is still extremely good...
wow.......2002-01-12
A warning to all dj's, leave this one alone. This is prime break beat sampling at its best. This is the modern day Meters. Smooth bass and sweet guitar sounds, with a hint of Booker-t.
Vintage funk sounds from this NYC collective.......2001-07-27
Well i've had this CD in my possession for less than a day now, but after just one listen, I have to throw props to Calypso King and the Soul Investigators. I consider myself someone with pretty discriminating music tastes, always searching for some rare funk gems, something you would expect to hear as a DJ Shadow sample. For a modern album, this has a uniquely vintage feel to it - like you just dusted of the cover of an old 45 and gave it a spin. The vibe sounds vaguely like Greyboy Allstars or Galactic, if Galactic put out a record in 1971. If your into chilled out, laid back, old-school funk this album should be in your collection.
