Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

A "Good Day" becomes great with the remastered CD from 2005 with a bonus disc!.......2007-07-14

As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various music supplies and recordings from the 60's and 70's.

Nektar's third release coming after "Journey To The Centre Of The Eye" and "A Tab In The Ocean" to this day remains the most underrated of the original Roye Albrighton albums.

Critics called this not up to the previous LP's, when in fact they should have been emphatically impressed with the diversity of the material and the willingness to show off their wears in a double album!

"Good Day" The perfect opening track. It shows the bands ability to tastefully jam around a catchy tune.

"New Day Dawning" Brings us closer to the progressive sound we loved from the two previous efforts. Roye plays with such intensity that it can split your head open. All of a sudden the band takes a bit of the Beatles legendary song "Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)." It some how all comes together in a five minute production of brilliance.

"What Ya Gonna Do" Tuned out to be the song with a myriad of titles over the years. Sometimes called "Woman Trouble", "Easy" or "Evil" the tune pays homage to the sounds of the blues and early rock and roll. Taff's keyboards bring us back to the 50's and Roye `s six string is having fun with the trip to yesteryear.

"1-2-3-4" Would be legendary for its on stage power. The twelve minute studio version leaves a calling card for the all out assault of the senses the concert audience would endure. Mo's bass is crystal clear as the walls shake from the sheer aggression of the music.

"Do You Believe In Magic?" Delivers a tremendous combination of vocal and musical savvy. Ron Howden's drumming is precise, intense, and often up front in the mix.

"Cast Your Fate" Creates a painting of the highest quality. The canvass starts with mellow moods and during a false sense of security the painting takes a heavier view.

"A Day In The Life Of A Preacher" This became one of the most requested Nektar tunes for their live set. The thirteen-minute studio version in all it's splendor never prepared us for the epic live renditions. The band would click on all cylinders and the audience left gasping for air. If the only sounds that emanated the entire night were Roye's blowtorch guitar, you wouldn't feel cheated.

"Wings" Lets you recover from the previous aerial attack. The magic of Nektar is their ability to take us on a musical odyssey with every path never lined with imperfections.

"Odyssee: Rons on/Never, Never, Never/Da-Da-Dum" If ever a tune had an appropriate name. The music is captivating taking over your body. It mixes the progressive rock wizardry of Nektar with their rock and roll aggression. When you sprinkle on Ron's drum solo, this one isn't leaving the CD player anytime soon!

Make sure you look for the remaster from October 17, 2005 with an entire CD of bonus tracks!

A great introduction to a great band!.......2006-01-19

This is what made the term 'kraut/rock' (even though they were English but based in Germany) so great. Lots of long keyboard and guitar solos and tracks that go on forever.This is an excellant place to start (though 'tab in the ocean' is the pinnacle)because it is representive of all that was great about this band before they overreached themselves on 'remember the future' and completely lost the plot. All the tracks are basically improvised and mesh into each other. Highlights are the guitar/organ build up to '1-2-3-4' and the riffing on 'i wish you good day' If you like this there is another German band from this period called Out of Focus who released three albums and followed a similar path. Great album!

Although we loved Raz's first two records with ROIR, this is by far his finest record to date (as Badawi or under any other moniker). On “Soldier Of Midian” Raz samples his own live playing (from Flute to Bendir to Zarb) and agitates the mix with the use of subtle electronic effects. Heavy with Middle-Eastern percussion and a mesmerizing beat, it quickens the pulse and physically unnerves the listener. The pulsating rhythms are aggressive and unyielding, bordering on a hard-core drum record. Badawi's ability to capture a mood and control it, to force his will upon the listener, this is what makes “Soldier Of Midian” so compelling.

Incredible piece of art Raz! Congrats. Dancers listen...if you want to dance to this make sure your doctor gives you a clean bill of health before attempting it! With the right approach to choreography this album is a Troupe's dream. The underlying percussion is relentless and the repetitions are perfect for troupe or prop work. And for clubbing this can't be beat!

I agree with the other reviewer...this disc is relentless. Raz Mesinai, formerly of Sub Dub, is a true musical genius. This album got pretty much zero promotion...such a shame because the quality and originality of 'Soldier of Midian' easily rivals Karsh Kale, Badmarsh, Talvin Singh, and yes even Bill Laswell. Not that the style is similar to those musicians, this is much more middle eastern, but quite frankly there are few artists I know to compare this stuff with. Those into this sound will find little that rivals it....as for me I like things with a little more of a dub feel. But..this certainly helps round out my collection.

Relentless.......2001-12-30

Badawi's latest release is a pounding, galloping romp through the Middle East. It's his best album since "Bedouin Sound Clash," (better if you like his middle eastern leanings better than his dub leanings) and evidence that Badawi is an artist at the top of his game. On this album, Raz samples his own live playing and subtlely warps it with electronic effects. The results are freaking amazing. 14 songs of relentless, throbbing beats, which continually impress with each repeated listening. A perfect synthesis of past, present and future, of over here and over there.

The Real Thing.......2002-04-24

What happens to the midwestern, rust-belt losers from the Replacements' songs when they grow-up? Well, some of them manage to escape their factory town and form country bands. Thank God for Gram Parsons and Uncle Tupelo, and screw Nashville. Real country is white soul music, and Evangeline is proof of that.

it's more than y'alternative, it's damn good.......2002-04-10

let's get this straight, i've been writing and performing songs long enough to become the bitter and cynical bastard that i am. my rule of thumb for other bands is "First of all they[stink], and secondly i've never heard them", it seems to work for me. so i'm as shocked as anyone when i come across a record (debut at that) that i REALLY LIKE. the first thing i listen for from a record is a good song and this damn thing is chock-full. the main songwriter, Chris Cline, has the insightfulness and turn of phrase that Paul Westerberg has at his best. the band has the strength of good musicians that know that the most important thing is to play for the song. the songs are presented by both Cline and Jennifer Potter (who gets inside of Cline's songs and sings them as if she has lived them). hers is a pretty voice, along the lines of Rosanne Cash's, while his has the ragged appeal of a Jeff Tweedy. it's more than y'alternative, it's damn good.

I simply cannot get tired of listening to this album. My wife and I have turned on many of our friends to this cd (most of whom don't even like country music!). I was not surprised to read that they are one of Seattle's most popular up-and-coming bands...
The songs are beautifully written - they strike you with simple expressions of heart-felt emotions. Their first song, Island, begins "She was born on an island - she hates the water". Jennifer Potter has a beautiful clear and uplifting voice which blends seamlessly with the honkytonk guitar and slide guitar of Chris Cline and Kevin Suggs. The melodies are straight forward and simple - the kind that you find yourself humming hours after you listened to the cd - but, as many times as I have listened to this cd, they continue to grow on me. There is something very special here. The sound is open and uncluttered, but with the intelligent lyrics, beautiful singing and plenty of foot-stomping rhythms, this music has real "bottom" to it. If you ever get a chance to see this band live, do so at all costs - they are a wonderful live band!

I purchased this cd because I,m in the music business myself, and am always looking for new exciting country artists. What a disappointment! There is nothing original in this compilation of re-hashed country songs. I was particularly looking forward to hearing the vocal stylings of Ms. Potter, since I had read reviews that praised her voice as silvery, pure, and full of feeling. Once again i was let down. She's competent, but I felt nothing deeply emotive from her cliched country delivery. Do yourself a favor-skip this one and go for a classic.
