When "Down" shot up the singles charts in 1996, it was the culmination of eight years of hard work for Nebraska-bred, Los Angeles-based 311. Soundsystem ups the ante on the quintet's good-time, never-forced amalgam of hip-hop, rock, funk, and reggae. "Come Original" features Nick Hexum's identifiable talk-singing style, and the tune's lilting dancehall and reggae overtones make it perfect for convertible cruising. From the odd but compelling rhythms in "Freeze Time," to the Santana-influenced stylings and Tim Mahoney's intricate guitar work in "Life's Not a Race," to the almost metallic riffing of "Evolution," 311 have constructed a diverse yet cohesive collection. The band's crisp, edgy sound, well showcased by producer Hugh Padgam (XTC, the Police), is especially winning on the irresistible and rollicking "Mindspin" and the aggro closing cut, "Livin' & Rockin'." It's a good bet that this Soundsystem will find its way onto the sound systems of fans old and new. --Katherine Turman

Two years after LCD Soundsystem's eponymous full-length debut sent indie scenesters rushing to the dancefloor, the outfit headed by dance-rock producer James Murphy serves up another stiff cocktail of punk, dance, and funk with Sound of Silver. Analog synths, chugging basslines, chunky guitars, and Murphy's wild falsetto excursions are once again the foundation to which is added the new and strange, such as the heavily chorused voices that suggest backward-masking in the opener "Get Innocuous" and the captivating harmonics keyboardist Nancy Whang bounces off of Murphy's vocals on "Someone Great." If this album has its own version of "Daft Punk Is Playing at My House," it has to be "North American Scum," an infectious stormer that breezily dismisses Europe as a place where "the buildings are old and you might have lots of mimes." Such lines are good evidence that LCD's music would rather ridicule itself than fall into the kind of pretense and nostalgia it constantly lampoons. The album's title track reflects that hankering after one's teenage years is often interrupted when "you remember the feelings of a real live emotional teenager--then you think again," while the power ballad "New York I Love You But You're Bringing Me Down" wearily serenades the Big Apple as "still the one pool where I'd happily drown." True, LCD's music is not for everyone, which may have something to do with why their fans love them as they do. If you fall into the latter category, however, Silver is gold. --Brent Kallmer
Customer Reviews:
Great music.......2007-07-07
This was the first CD I ever heard from LCD Soundsystem and once I did, I was hooked. Excellent music has made me a fan.
I've heard this before........2007-07-03
Why is everyone lauding this second effort from LCD Soundsystem so much? It sounds like his first album. I own his first double CD album and this, "Sound Of Silver", just sounds like a rehash of that. It's well produced, fairly nice to listen to, but it just seems as if LCD Soundsystem realizes they have a hook, something that people will buy, so that's what they'll put out. And unfortunately, I was duped into buying it. I wasted money on an album ('Sound Of Silver') that I basically could have heard by listening to his first album. All of the songs on this album sound like songs on his first, and the lyrics on some of the songs are laughable in the least, which I would quote verbatim from the lyric sheet, had I already not gotten rid of this CD, due to its taking up space in my CD rack. 'New York...', is a riot, anyone who produces a track like this cannot expect to be taken seriously. I hope for his next album that he does better, although I'm fairly certain I won't be buying it anyway.
Better Than His Last One.......2007-06-22
If I have one criticism of this album it would be that he wears his influences on his sleeve. However, if you love Talking Heads' "Remain In Light" and Kraftwerk's "The Man Machine", you will probably like this album. The last track is also reminiscent of Grandaddy.
Sounds like a hit!!.......2007-06-17
LCD Soundsystem are a US electronic rock group, with a very British sound, a fact not lost on them as they sing "and for those of you who still think we're from england / we're not, no" on the buzzing, incredibly catchy "North American scum".
The album comprises just 9 songs, averaging 5 minutes each. Each track takes 1 to 2 minutes to build up to the vocal delivery.
Case in point is "Someone great" with loads of layering and electronic effects building up to a Human League-like song with eighties sounding synths.
Similarly, "Get innocuous" takes about 2 minutes to build to a shimmery dance song (with disembodied vocals) which takes no prisoners.
"Time to get away" has lead singer James Murphy singing and yelping over a pulsing guitar drenched house groove. The title track is a sparse but hypnotic effects laden song. "All my friends" is a pulsing U2-esque song.
Closing is the lone ballad; "New York, I love you but you're bringing me down", starting off deceptively like a Coldplay song, building up to a blistering guitar solo, and an unexpected twist at the end. They sound like a totally different band on this one.
It does take a few plays to get into but once it gets into your head, you can't get it out. One of the best dance CDs of the year!
bright eyes.......2007-06-12
I had to think of the Bright Eyes albums 'I'm Wide Awake' and 'Digital Ash'. The first one is a lot about New York, the second is more an electronic album. Sound of Silver sounds to me like an electronic album about New York.
Great album, very diverse, has its mellow moments (NY I love you) and a superdance tune (North American Scum).
Also a nice crossover album, people who only listen to electronic music will enjoy it and indie fans will as well.

So much has been said about disco-punk's King Midas, New York musician/producer James Murphy, that it's kind of hard to believe that we've had to wait until 2005 for the debut album from his dancefloor project, LCD Soundsystem. LCD's classic triumvirate of early singles--"Losing My Edge," "Give It Up," and "Yeah"--joined the dots between punk-rock, disco, and funk in a way that hadn't been seen since the New York downtown scene of the early '80s, but these are bravely relegated to a bonus disc in favor of a suite of new material that reworks the band's influences in new, often explicit ways: take "Movement," for instance--a homage to the Fall that finds Murphy barking "It's a fat guy/ In a T-shirt/ Doing all the singing!" over punchy analog synths, or the quietly majestic "Great Release," a doff of the cap to Brian Eno circa Taking Tiger Mountain. For all his encyclopedic musical knowledge, however, it's one of Murphy's strengths that he seldom seems uptight about the practice of music-making: it's how he can get away with penning a gonzo disco-punk number and naming it something as fantastically flippant as "Daft Punk Is Playing at My House"--and more importantly, it's why LCD Soundsystem succeeds as a splendid dance record as well as a smart intellectual exercise. --Louis Pattison

I will show you the ropes kid, show you the ropes........2007-05-15
Daft Punk has BEEN playing at MY house, now I can sing about it.
....Great Artists steal!.......2006-10-21
Which is true, but it's even better when they make it their own and not just simply recycle the same beats over to us as if we wouldn't know. Being heavily influenced by some of the best stuff out there, LCD Soundsystem has created a very broad album in the fact that it encompasses many different genres while still staying within one track!
There's nothing marvelously deep or enthralling here, just some really good fun, making beats and dancing too them. And that's how this album should be taken as. You want to have fun and you want to dance? Throw in some LCD! There's nothing here you really can't groove, jam, and rock out too. It's got it all, I wouldn't be surprised if you found these tracks playing in all kinds of different discos.
I myself being more of a rock fan, really enjoy the friendly usability of this album. I'm not completely ignorant on what is what when it comes to dance pop, electro, or synth pop and all that. I have my share of albums on all sorts of genres. And surprisingly this album will be one of them that bridges many of them.
Highly recommended if you're into grooving, feel loose and just want to chill or have a party at your flat. After it's over, you can put on some Daft Punk, and then they'll really be playing at your house!
A Confident Debut.......2006-10-12
Though the 2000s have suffered from a lack of decent electronic/dance-style music, LCD Soundsystem has come out with a surprisingly good collection of songs of that genre. The songwriting and the music come across as incredibly confident, for this being their first album. James Murphy's vocals have a sort of coolness (and even a hint of sarcasm) that really strengthens the album. Not for one moment do they give off the impression of a mediocre, unpolished group.
Many of the songs are long in length (many are around 5 minutes, with one going on for nearly 12), partly because of the alternative-electronic genre they are a part of. Despite the number of songs and their length, the songs don't come across as repetitive. The longest song is even entirely instrumental, something rarely seen from modern bands. There isn't the "filler material" usually present in most bands' albums, since all of the songs are listenable and each have their own expressive quality. The first disc flows together well from start to finish and the second disc is composed mainly of longer and more dance-oriented songs.
One thing I noticed is how similar James Murphy's delivery of vocals are to Mark E. Smith of The Fall. They both have the same sort of inflection in their singing style, though Murphy is American and Smith is British. Then again, many artists of the present have been influenced by (and thus sometimes imitate) artists of the past. The similarity isn't so strong as to overwhelm the music, but is definitely easy to detect in certain songs.
Brought back fun, but hazy, memories! Make it 4 1/2 stars........2006-02-20
I INHALED this CD. After all the hype and hyper blowin' up about this dance/punk/rock genius, I finally broke down and bought it. Not that I was old enough to get into the discos in the mid 70's-early/mid 80's(I was still in elementary school, then middle school), but I remember(and still love) the groups that influenced this disc...The Buzzcocks, Heaven 17, PiL, Blondie...hell even the Rolling Stones "Some Girls" album. And yes, I have to say(after finding "Death Disco-Songs Under the Dance Floor 1978-1984" CD and I'm ordering it)the old stuff is more fun. But for the hipsters who don't know this is not original genre,it's pretty great. No, it's very great. The first song "Daft Punk is Playing at my House" was fun, and both discs made it worth driving through snowy/sleety/frozen rain covered streets to work out at the gym these last couple weeks.
LCD Soundsystem Is Playing In My House... My House!.......2006-02-08
This is a band that doesn't care what the "sound of the moment" is. They just make music. Period. This double CD is a treat for the senses for anyone that appreciates good music. Indie, punk, funk, disco... You name it, there's a splash of everything everywhere.
The first CD is highly club-friendly, and whilst the bonus CD is less dancey, it is the beats that are substituted with bucket-loads of creative genius and strange but interesting melodies. What is always consistent on both CDs are the lyrics - when Murphy belts out 'It's a fat guy / In a T-shirt / Doing all the singing!' in "Movement", you know you're in for a treat!
Buy it and enjoy it!

The last great 311 cd.......2007-06-26
Soundsystem ends the computer/music-for-heaven phase with Soundsystem, and 311 ended their great album streak there. I think something happened, but that's okay. I'm glad to see that 311 went on for so long, and all the previous albums and the songs on Transistor I like are so ________ good. This isn't the best of them, but it's cool and has it's own sound. There's a lot of computer sounds, and it sound like a soundsystem, while Transistor was so spacey and heaven like.
I can't think of a single stand out track, because the tracks really are very good. SOme of the songs dont' grab me like other 311 songs can, but that's okay. Come Original, Freeze Time, Life's Not A Race (it sounds like Santana a bit with the guitar), and the great cover of Leaving Babylon by The Bad Brains, are some that stand out. I dont' consider Sound System there best, but it's still excellent, and yet another sick album from 311. These guys really are amazing.
Soundsystem to me represented more of the band streching their limits, especially Tim, who dosen't always play guitar solos. THe Santana solos are great. Chad's drumming isn't as good as songs like Applied Science, but it was some of Chad doing some awesome monster drumming. Nick Hexum still on sings, and Martinez can still rap, and when he sings properly, he can _________ sing (on the chorus for Life's Not A Race). 311 aren't just a _________ nu-metal band. Not Rage, their better.
I wouldn't look into their later albums unless you really like them. I haven't really looked into them, but it seems that they seemed to beat the rock into the ground and no longer made great rock music, and became just another alternative rock band.
9.5/10
GREATEST Albums of the '90s.......2006-09-11
If I was stranded on a desert island and I could have one album to listen to, it would be SOUNDSYSTEM.
There are 13 songs on Soundsystem, each track has a diverse mix of styles and sounds. I love all the songs except for track 10.
Music is my life and I listen to everything but country. 311 is a band that mixes various musical genres effortlessly. Soundsystem offers a variety of styles including rock, reggae, funk, hip-hop, metal, and world. The songs are so catchy and fun, you will listen to them over and over.
I have been a 311 fan for over 10 years now and if I had to pick a favorite album, it would be this one. I have listened to Soundsystem a ridiculous amount of times and it never grows old.
311 have been going strong for 15 years now. This album came out in 1999, but it sounds as modern and amazing as the best contemporary music. Do not deny your ears and mind any longer, you need Soundsystem in your collection!
I have listened to SOUNDSYSTEM more times than any other album.
Awesome.......2006-05-13
I love this album. I think 3 of my top 10 favorite songs from this band are on here. Flowing is great, I absolutely love the harmonizing and sound. Sever has great lyrics and probably my favorite chours from the band. Plus, I love the little guitar solo outro at the end. And Mindspin, while a fairly average song for the first two minutes, finishes with maybe my favorite piece of music in the history of music. The ending of that song is absolutely brilliant. Add those songs with a bunch of other solid songs (Freeze Time, Come Original, Life's Not a Race, Large in the Margain) and it easily makes the album 5* to me. Plus, the other songs aren't all that bad either. In fact, the only song I really dislike on the album is Can't Fade Me. This is definitely in the upper echolon of 311 albums for me.
An All Time 311 Bestseller!.......2006-01-11
This is one of 311's top albums. If you are just getting to know them, or just haven't invested in this album yet, now is the time.
I estimate that the flowing rhythms and intricate musical themes of this CD have resonated through my many systems hundreds of times. Especially if I am going on a road trip or something, this CD plays -- all the way through! You can't stop it. That's how good it flows!
Breakdown:
"Freeze Time"
This track starts it all of in a grungy, hard, nod-your-head-to-this style that cant be beat. You will understand where this CD is going from this track alone.
"Come Original"
311 despizes non-originality. SA takes to the mic to deliver a lyrical reasoning of why you've got to make up your own sound. Hexum trades off nicely, continuing the 311 tradition. This one is not a crowd pleaser in the sense that it was made to rock! But the crowds sure go crazy over it!
"Large in the Margin"
A flowing nuance of sound that takes you into the more "hydroponic sound" 311 loves. Yeah, it's a homegrown sound, but it sure takes to the waves and pleases the ear. Trust me, you won't have to skip this track. (Nor will you want to.)
"Flowing"
Just take off. It doesn't matter where you go, 311 will find you. You won't lose where you are going, in other words. I like the intro to this song especially. It sets an interesting tone to the whole thing.
"Can't Fade Me"
'Nuff said!
"Life's Not a Race"
While other bands of the time were meddling in the wanna-be-punk rock to match the style of the '70s punk genre, 311 was messing around with the more musical, lyrical, psychadelia that made Led Zepplin and Pink Floyd masterworkers of music. The Transistor album of 311 makes that apparent. They bring some more with this album. Nice job 311.
"Strong All Along"
A head bobbin', smooth rockin' tune. Mix a bit of reggae and some "Omaha Stylee" of 311, and you get this track. It is an amazzing thing!
"Sever"
Traditional 311 jam you cant miss out on.
"Eons"
One of my big time favorites. Flowing. Nice guitar riffs, and chilled lyrics put this one in the top of their track listing for me. They could have made this one a single if they'd wanted...or something.
"Evolution"
Get up and jam to this funky riff about the evolution of technology. Isn't it great? 311 wants you to ensure that it continues. They made a breakthrough, whose next...exponentially?
"Leaving Babylon"
Reggae and psycadelia meet! Another of my all time favorites. This shows not only musical talent, but studio talent. These guys know their stuff, and their music history. If heard it live as well, and it rocks there too. This one seals the deal for me. 311 is at the top. This one will change music forever!
"Mindspin"
The title says it all. You want a little '90s punk. Here you go, served up on a silver platter (or is it platinum)?
"Livin & Rockin"
That's what you'll do as you let this CD go for another round. This one finishes it off niceley. But when you're talking about circles, there is no end, and no beginning. So does this track start it, or end it. I can't really say.
This album is one of their all time best. It is a must have for any R&R lover of this or any generation. Don't wait another minute to start yourself off on a whole nother revolution of music!
Perfection.......2005-12-15
Every single one of 311's albums is awesome. NOBODY has a smoother voice than Nick. Martinez spits out rad harmonies. They're music makes you get up out of your seat. You can feel the music, not just hear it. Of course, every album has my top three songs, but it by no means implicates the others aren't good. "Come Original"....Awesome, "Creatures" is my anthem. If you want a skin & mind tingling experience listen to "Beyond the Gray Sky" which is on one of the other albums. The Don't tread On Me album has more of a ska feel to it which is really cool, however I do wish Martinez was less prominent in the vocals. It seemed like he was pushing in on Nick's territory. Stick with what you do well, Martinez, which is backround harmonies; I like ya but you start to sound whiny the louder you get. Wanna go to the bestr concert of your life? Catch an outdoor show. Rock On!

Here are the dubs to Bingy Bunny's 2 "hits".......2006-11-02
Hey roots fans! Been looking for the dubs to Me & Jane and Keep It In The Family? Here they are; contained in the bonus tracks. Awoah! The original album is fairly sedate by Scientist standards, but when you've got him mixing down the Radics from reggae's golden age, well...
Heavyweight dub bout.......2001-04-22
A nice little package, all in all...When Scientist runs into the Roots Radics on Maxfield Avenue, you know there's going to be trouble. It takes a while for things to really kick off...the first part of the program is characterised by some solid, though not particularly challenging dub excursions. It's the final five "bonus" cuts that really ignite; Scientist neatly sidesteps Tubby's long dub shadow and turns in a series of dubs that are all his own. So, at the end of the day, a worthwhile investment. Thanks to those folks down in St.Louis at Sound System for bringing this one to the light of day...

Customer Reviews:
Rock On!
