After three installments of its Source Lab compilations, the French label Source is starting from scratch with a new title and a slew of new artists. Paying tribute to Gallic electronic pioneers such as Jean-Jacques Perrey, many songs explore Moog sounds and often display a goofy streak. On most of the tracks, the beats take a backseat to carefree humor and laid-back insouciance--many make Air sound like Metallica in comparison. While kitsch sometimes rears its ironic head, most cuts are enchanting precisely because they approach fluffiness with unselfconscious grace. In particular, watch out for P. Jack and Rob, who have the wide-eyed wonder of 1960s kids' TV shows. But the compilation's centerpiece is Bertrand Burgalat's sprawling "Kim," a sexy marvel of organ, vrooming synthesizers, and breathy "doo-doos." Gorgeous. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

french moog shiznit.......2005-11-15
i have not written a review on amazon in quite a while, but this compilation has motivated me to get back into sharing my opinions on the music i purchase from this site. i got this cd for one penny and it was in 'brand new' condition minus the shrink wrap. i thought it would just help round out my collection of stuff from source records, but i actually prefer this compilation over any solo albums that air, pheonix, or any of those other cats put out. the reason why is the consistancy of this record...every track is wonderful.
Hardly the cream of french house..........2002-12-06
Why? It's too "synthetic"...what I mean is the samples and cuts just get annoying after a while. I stopped listening after track 2. That's a serious disappointment in my book. I have over 3000 house tracks and frankly this cd ranks well down at the bottom. Ernest St. Laurent is always killer and the Heat Wave track by Phoenix is good too...but then the cd goes downhill.....reviews are very tough to gage for most people reading them and I know others on here really liked this cd. I just don't feel the same way.
It was easy to get in the moog for this comp.......2000-06-16
My favorite comp in years! Right when I was looking to jump head-first into the French house pop scene, thanks to AIR, I stumbled upon this comp, and was very surprised right from the very first song by Ernest St. Laurent...a great beginning for a great *moogie* album! From there, it flows into another great track, this time, by Phoenix, only known for their mixes, and openinig acts for AIR, and then into my favorite track by Oomiaq (where can I find more stuff by these guys? ), a great song filled with incredible mood, characterized by subtle acoustics, awesome arrangements, and mixed with just enough, and never too many, flutes, and analog synths. Several great tracks follow, highlighted by mostly down-tempo songs, by Rob (my second fave!), Mellow, and Sebastian Tellier. If you are expecting the next Chemical Bros, then this one is not for you. Although post-modern, this comp has a retro feel mixed into it all...and although maybe a bad comparison, I feel that a great many of the artists featured here, grew up with Pink Floyd, and soundtrack composers Goblin, Ennio Morricone, and John Barry. Take a chance on this one, give it a few listens, and I believe it will become one of your regular music selections, as it has with me.
Modern mellow muzak........2000-04-11
Source Material has a ghostly quality that stays with you long after the CD has finished. It's a great change from the more upbeat and funky French stuff that has surfaced in past years. It's hard to describe but I'll give it a go: spooky, retro, beautiful, theraputic. It is the perfect CD to calm the nerves after a hectic day at work or a big night out. Each track has something special. Buy it!
Quite good.......1999-12-10
Found in Rolling Stone's yearly roundup next to Air's Moon Safari, which was one of my favorite CDs of 1999. This one is arguably better-- even though each song is by a different artist, the style and theme are remarkably consistent. It feels like a great album by a single band. Anyway, if you like Air, you'll like this too-- it's great.

Product Description
Norbert Moslang was, until recently, one half of the now defunct Swiss duo Voice Crack. 'Distilled' was constructed in the studio, using a live solo performance of "cracked everyday electronics" by the composer himself as its source material. In the studio, Moslang allowed the computer to "make calculations with two pieces" of the original performance. "If I liked it, I worked further on it, if I didn't like it I threw it away." The resulting composition - a distillation of the orginal recording into something new - moves tiny granular packets of sound throughout the audible frequency range and the stereo spectrum, drawing the listener into an artificial environment where sounds replace light as the dominant sensory input. 'Distilled', a remarkable departure from the "known Voice Crack sound", is an engaging and rewarding listening experience that, at just twenty minutes, fades away long before overstaying its welcome.
