On his second "solo" album, this stand-up comic and character actor proves himself to be not just a foul-mouthed everyman and an unrepentant geek, but a rather awesome wordsmith as well. That a comedian might rant about how "Cirque du Soleil is like catnip for old people" or the ridiculous unhealthiness of a popular item at the fast food chain KFC is not surprising. That he'd call the fast food item "a failure pile in a sadness bowl" is, let's face it, pure poetry (and really, actually funny the way he tells it). On the track "I Tell a Story About Birth Control and Deal with a Retarded Heckler," Patton displays some of the finest manipulation of a disturbing audience member you'll ever hear. That the album was released by Sub Pop makes perfect sense, as Patton not only has Catholic music tastes--tossing off references to Hasil Adkins, the Pixies, Minor Threat, and Roky Erickson--but as we all know, stand-up is "the new grunge." --Mike McGonigal

Patton has been a stand-up comedian for almost twenty years and this is his second CD. Lazy...or maybe busy. He's appeared in over twenty movies, including "Magnolia", "Reno 911!: Miami", and the documentary "The Comedians Of Comedy", which he also created and produced. He played Spence on "The King Of Queens" for nine seasons, is a regular on "Reno 911!", a frequent guest on Conan and Jimmy Kimmel, and a recurring voice actor on "Kim Possible", "SpongeBob SquarePants", "Aqua Teen Hunger Force", and "Crank Yankers". He's a regular columnist in the NY Times Magazine and was an uncredited writer on the "Borat" movie. He's also the lead voice in this summer's Pixar movie, "Ratatouille", playing a rat named Remy. This is his first CD on Sub Pop and it includes a DVD with one hour of stand-up.

Brilliant. That's all I can say. I don't want to even talk about the content because I would not want to spoil a single moment if you haven't heard it yet. It's great. If you love Patton's work, you will love the cd/dvd. Buy this instead of wasting your time watching "Last Comic Standing".

Why Warren Zevon's Stand in the Fire has languished in the CD-reissue era is a mystery. It's an unbridled live rock album, recorded in 1981 when live albums were de rigueur. Zevon, for all the well-orchestrated rock (and great backing vocals on "Mohammed's Radio"), was a small-venue guy and an unlikely rocker. He tears it up on "Stand in the Fire" and adds guitar grit and vocal menace to "Werewolves of London," making the "little old lady got mutilated late last night" line sparkle and name checks James Taylor and Zevon's early champion Jackson Browne. I got this in college and had been looking for years for this disc. Once I got it in my hands and put it in the disc player it was like being reunited with an old friend.

I saw Warren twice in acoustic shows, but never got the chance to see him with a full band. This is a great live recording; raw, electric and alive with a unique vitality. Warren takes the energy of the audience and channels it into a vivid preformance. He was one of the most honest rock n roll artists ever. This disc is a must have. Incredible versions of "Lawyers, Guns and Money", "Excitable Boy" among others. Nothing weak on this album. Your collection is not complete until you add this disc.

An interesting piece of Warren Zevon's musical development.......2007-06-29

Representing one of Zevon's very early musical experiments, Stand in the Fire is a live album with ALOT of energy. He was young and wild (he was such an excitable boy). Luckily, his musical talent evolved with time & experience. Both his writing and presentation of his songs improved with age. I rated this CD a "3", mostly for historical interest in his developing talent, & less for pure musical enjoyment.

Reader, we have consensus. Lists of the greatest live albums often include James Brown, Live at the Apollo, Bob Dylan and the Band, Before the Flood, and recordings from King Curtis, Johnny Cash, Bruce Springsteen, Van Morrison, and the Who. To this pantheon add the newly re-issued 1981 recording of Stand in the Fire. Among 1970s singers songwriters, Warren Zevon presented a welcome refraction of the mellow stylings of his California contemporaries. Certainly this was true in songs where Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner exacted revenge and an Excitable Boy was a really bad prom date. The production values of his early albums, though, belied such aggressive content. Not here, a magic night at the Roxy, where fierce Bo Diddley beats, nearly-New Wave stylings, unhinged vocals, a rowdy, rocking backing band, and incendiary guitar work engulf these songs to spectacular effect. Zevon himself sounds like he's having the time of his life and I hope he was. The hit, Werewolves of London, is here, of course. But it's hardly the highlight (and that's no slight) on a record where every tune absolutely burns. Zevon and band also played two previously unrecorded songs and they are as strong as the familiar tracks. It sounds like every player on stage knew this was a show for the ages. So get this recording today. And as the best rock and roll deserves, turn it up!

I had this record on vinyl and always looked for a digital copy. Great versions of Werewolves, Pitiful and especially Lawyers. Terrific energy, band and memories of Zevon.

It is about time they released this. I have been playing my original record in the meantime.
One of the great live albums, if you need an album to crack the plaster on your ceiling by turning your stereo up to 11 (past 10 for that little extra umph), this is the one to buy.

As many of you probably have, I listened to this album because it had Michelle Branch in it. I have to say that the vocals with Jessica Harp are fantastic and the sound of the songs are nice, but most of the songs aren't that great. Leave the Pieces is a nice song, but not that great. The only ones I enjoyed are Lay Me Down, Rain, The Good Kind, and Tenessee. The rest is mediocre. My, Oh My for instance is just plain boring. Rain is a great song, which sounds exactly as if it came off Hotel Paper, and isn't country at all. Lay Me Down isn't a truly great song, but I really enjoyed it. The Good Kind is a nice sounding song, and the melody reminds me of Breathe. Tenessee is a really good song.

I love that Michelle Branch can be successful with mainstream and well as country music. She has such a transitional voice and is well suited for both genres. This CD is amazing!

I mean, seriously? This CD got me back into Christian music. After hearing this CD I went back and got a lot of their previous albums. Great stuff. I love the mix of 'rocking out' and quiet praise. I honestly could just put this CD on in my truck and never change it.

Wish I could give it a 10+ ... I had this album for over a year and it just sat around and I never really gave it a chance....don't know why but I didn't and then I finally decided to give it a chance and boy was I in for a totally unexpected suprise....once I really listened to it, it did not leave my cd player for 4 months straight. Seriously!! I listened to this CD day and night, on my way to work, at work, at home, working out... wherever I could find a place to just listen and worship. That was why I could not get enough of this CD, it makes you just want to worship and praise Jesus. It is by far the most influential and powerful worship CD I own and I own TONS of Christian albums. I cannot begin to tell you the impact this album has had on my family and friends. I have shared this album with all of my friends and it has had a tremendous impact on them as well. My kids LOVE this album. I would say this, the best songs for me start from tracks 5-10 (From The Inside Out to Fire Fall Down) and 15-17 (The Stand to Hallelujah). These are the passion and root of the album personally. You just get continous and endless praise and worship songs that you can just sing along to, lift your hands and JOYFULLY worship and adore our Creator. This album just makes you want to stop whatever it is you are doing, close your eyes and focus on Him and what He has done for us and how good He is. I have played this cd so much that it is worn out and I have to eventually buy another one. My family and I also saw them at Fellowship Church in Grapevine not too long ago and it was one of the best experiences at a concert in terms of simple worship without alot of unnecessary production. There were no fancy lights or special effects or what have you, it was just simple praise and worship I truly felt Joel Houston's love and passion for Christ and it was a very moving and powerful experience. Truly love this album, love their creativity and most importantly their love for Christ. I not only recommend this album but share it with everyone whom you come in contact with and tell them about this album.IT IS JUST THAT GOOD!!! EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT THIS ABLUM....

the reviews just before this say it all. I wanted to add that this is made MUCH better when you buy the CD/DVD combination. While the DVD doesnt have all the songs, it gives you a much better look and closer feel to their music. Unlike one review below, I think they are getting better with each release much like their parent church. AND they have a new one coming out in March 2007

As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various recordings from the 60's and 70's.

Change may be normal in the music business but when a critical part of a machine is removed so early in the game could the replacement be equal or greater? Jethro Tull's debut and intense album "This Was" highlighted the blues guitar offerings from Mick Abrahams. As the band would consider more and more adapting a style closer to English Folk, Abrahams and group parted ways. Enter one Martin Barre.

The same way the Rolling Stones struck gold with Mick Taylor taking over for Brian Jones, Jethro Tull did likewise. In no way is this slighting Abrahams ability. Barre's forte was the ability to diversify and succeed in any musical genre.

Tull opened the second album with the bluesy-based "A New Day Yesterday." Instantly the listener is fixated to the songs construction. Throughout the compositions Anderson's vocals and Barre's tasty playing (as well as the perfect tone for each tune) mesh as one. To solidify the musical side of things Glen Cornick's bass and Clive Bunker's drums are locked together. As you have digested the recording, in the past Barre's skill may have been more prevalent to the ear because his guitar is such an integral part of the sound (He has played with Ian Anderson since 1969) but don't overlook the fine performance Bunker gave.

"Bourée" has become one of the most highly praised instrumentals ever. Almost 40 years later it still is receiving airplay.

"Back To The Family" blends folk and rock. The vocal inflection is perfect. You feel as Ian Anderson is singing for one and not the masses.

"Nothing Is Easy" is another song still being played on the radio. The riff deserves its legendary stature. Barre plays the song with such ease intensity yet ease, it wouldn't feel right coming out of another guitarists hands.

"Fat Man" further explores their folk side with some esoteric sounds to boot.

Time has not diminished the album, only catapulted it standing. With the addition of four bones tracks, it is now easy to go living in the past.

Great Songs.......2007-06-09

I listened to this for the first time in many years upon recent purchase, and my feeling is the same as it was 20 years ago in my youth when I memorized the album note-for-note. It's a great collection of songs. Ian and the band move from heavy rock to exotic chamber music to ballad and back and forth, and all 10 songs are not just fine, but extremely well-crafted and memorable. Which makes this a pretty great album.

Their best............2007-05-18

OK, to get the real deal package-wise I think you have to seek out the Japanese digipack with the pop-up of the band in the middle. But if you aren't into childrens-art-book styling like me, and just want the music, get this in any form. "This Was", their first effort, broke us into what they were all about, so then we were really ready for this when it came out. The bonus tracks fit fine thematically and don't mess up what was a nice cohesive LP in the first place. Never have been able to get "Fat Man" out of my head, maybe because it hits close to home.

Forget what you think you know about Jethro Tull.......2007-05-12

The only bad news about this album is that Tull never again came close to this phenomenal album. Technically, this is J.T.'s second album but the first album had a drastically different lineup. "Stand Up" is a beautiful collection of fantastic songs and amazing guitar work. The band managed to produce 2 more great albums before they began to descend into parody. Surprisingly, for the late 60s, most of the band were tea-totallers and it shows. The musicianship is very tight, blending jazz, folk, middle eastern and folk influences into a heady brew that appears effortless. If you think this band is a bunch of boring old hippies, buy this CD and listen more closely. You may be missing some amazing music.

JETHRO TULL'S RENDITION OF "BOURÉE".......2007-05-08

The three-minute plus instrumental piece is a melodic journey through a universe of rhythmic diversity which characterizes the band's gigantism amidst the Barons of Progressive Rock.

Released in 1969, the album "STAND UP" - the band's second studio achievement - hosts a vast repertoire of multifaceted compositions which are fusions themselves of various musical elements pertaining to styles as diverse as: classical, folk, celtic, hard rock and jazz. Decades later, these songs would become atemporal Jethro Tull Classics. Among this all-star line-up is their version of the erudit "BOURÉE", which stands-out until the present day as one of the most precious gemstones in the annals of progressive rock.

This particular rendition of Johan Sebastian Bach's classic piece is simply astonishing. The song starts off in a sublime manner, with Ian Anderson's magical flute luring the listener along with its angelical melody which in deed seems lighter than air. Such ethereality is only interrupted as the piece's time signature switches to a funky rhythmic break-down beat. From this point on, the song about faces in structure, shifting from a classical arrangement to a groovy/psychadelic motif in which all band members jam intensely and in a complementary manner.

To guarantee this effect, a superb rhythmic work is handled by both bass player Glenn Cornick and drummer Clive Bunker as they set a sturdily structured jamming framework which serves as a precious safeguard for Ian Anderson's and Martin Barre's whimsical solos.

Moreover, Ian Anderson's role as a "maestro" in charge of his experimental quartet is a solid statement that proved to the entire musical community that his traits as a musician were far too superior for the time. As of that moment, his distinguished position as band leader, composer and musical virtuoso would become unanimously widespread and also immortalized in the timeless chords of his "BOURÉE".

I like the album starting from Inner Universe..........2007-01-07

I bought this album for track 11 "Inner Universe"
(which is the track from the opening sequence of the tv show),
and I would buy the album for this one track alone.

As for the rest of the album, I really wanted to like it but
the only songs I found that were good enough to stand on their own
are track 11 "Inner Universe" and track 18 "Rise [TV Size]".

If you want some albums where you can listen to the
entire album (without editing out more than half the album)
I would recommend "Cowboy Bebop" and "Cowboy Bebop: Blue";
they are both much better than this album.

Well, the second half of this CD is great. From "Inner Universe" on. Maybe it's not quite half. "Beauty is Within Us" is a particularly moving track. Especially when you listen closely or read the lyrics.

In 1967, Sly Stone was unabashed: his debut, A Whole New Thing, claimed high ground--it was new, big time. He knew it. By 1969, the newness was transformed, Sly was imploring listeners to Stand! and breaking new ground. The snarl of "Don't Call Me Nigger, Whitey" with its droning organ and wah-wah guitar had claws, it was unmistakable. And the full-on blast of harmonica, fuzz guitars, and horns that opens "I Want to Take You Higher" just cemented the claim: Music would unite and fight and kick and get you high. "Everyday People" almost seems an anomaly in this company, a breezy harmony vocal backing, simple piano framing, long horn lines, and a churchy chorus. It's the biggest hit from Stand!, a true pop gem. What you get with the rest of the album (and Sly's early catalog overall) is sui generis. "Sing a Simple Song" has scouring, wordless shouts, a heavy beat backed by multiple voices half-atop each other, horn riffs jetting across guitar riffs, and an abrupt, scrambling end. The pinnacle........2007-05-16

In 1969, Sly & the Family Stone finally found their voice with "Stand!". Continuing his fusion of nearly all sounds he could find while redefining what funk was, leader Sly Stone crafted an album with no less than 4 charting singles, topped off by #1 hit "Everyday People".

The album is dominated by something entirely new-- Stone has taken the band's funk sounds and injected some space, some openness into the music. Take the aformentioned "Everyday People"-- it's a funk song, there's no doubt, but it's got a breeziness to it that's somewhat indefinable (that and an irrestible chorus shouted passionately by the band with Sly on top). Likewise title track "Stand!" has this same openness, almost a California pop song to its verses, again with Stone's soulful vocal leading the way.

But there's something else on here as well, an almost claustrophobically dense sound that's beginning to emerge (and that would define the album's followup "There's a Riot Goin' On"). I think in some capacity it's evident everywhere, but it can most be heard in "Don't Call Me N*gger, Whitey" and the 12 minute jam "Sex Machine"-- a dark, bleak sound that doesn't lend itself to open structure but somehow maintains the same irresistability that the rest of the material has. On the former, Sly Stone sings the chorus with a venom over the dense funk dirge, the latter is wholly instrumental, but in roughly the same vein. Both also feature Sly Stone singing through a vocodor run through a wah-wah pedal to extraordinary effect. One thing about them that's definitely, even at their extended lengths (nearly 6 minutes and over 13 minutes respectively), both of them are incredibly intense and intriguing. Both also highly informed the future of music, be it Miles Davis' superb '70s records or pretty m uch the entire genres of soul, funk, r&b and hip hop.

Perhaps when the album does best is when it sits somewhere in between these-- "Somebody's Watching You" wiht its laid back groove and great dirty guitars ends up being one of the creepiest recordings on record and "I Want to Take You Higher" (a remake of "Higher" from a couple years ago) takes the claustrophobia and uses it to push ecstacy to new heights, proving to be downright overwhelming.

This reissue remasters the record and appends a handful of bonus tracks-- mostly single mixes and a couple unreleased recordings and includes detailed liner notes. Sonically, this improvement is fantastic-- the record is crisp and clear and presented as you'd like it to be. The only complaint I have is the choice to leave off singles "Hot Fun in the Summertime" and double A-side "Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)"/"Everybody is a Star". The three pieces were slated for a followup to "Stand!" that never materialized and ended up being stuck on a "Greatest Hits" record. While strictly speaking they don't belong either here or with this record's followup, it'd've been nice if they were included somewhere with this batch of remasters (for anyone looking, they can be found on "The Essential Sly & the Family Stone").

Bottom line on "Stand!" is that it's one of the great albums of it's era, and together with "There's a Riot Goin' On" forms the peak of Sly & the Family Stone. This is essential listening. Highly recommended.

'Stand'is where Sly & The Family Stone's musical experiences onA Whole New Thing,Dance to the Music and Life gestated into something totally unique.Those albums found Sly waltzing over,under and around the funk;on 'Stand' he dives right into it.Of course most of us know the hits by heart-the title track,the punchy rock of "I Wanna Take Your Higher" and of course the immortal "Everyday People".In fact what is so important here is that this marks the moment Sly became a full flegded album artist because the peppy "Somebody's Watching You" is one of those classics-that-never-was-a-hit.As far as the funk goes there's huge handfuls of that in "Sing A Simple Song" and "You Can Make It If You Try" alone.Still neither of those are enough to keep the totally dangerous "Don't Call Me Nigger,Whitey" in check;it's message is right on time with it's us vs. them humor and NASTY fuzz bass.And as far as fuzz bass goes Larry Graham packs almost more into the instrumental "Sex Machine" then the song can handle,but of course it does in a FUNK OVERLOADED kind of way.If 'Stand' itself spoke to and about the cultural,racial and political issues in the world and in music in the late 60's then the MEAN instrumental bonus "My Brain (Zig Zag)",just showing the complete musical inspiration Sly and his band were during 1969-70.If truth be known that inspiration may have been his musical downfull soon to come.But while it lasted,it was amazing.'Stand' is not only a classic funk album and a classic Sly release but a milestone in all of music of the 20'th century.

Go out and buy Hillsong United's "United We Stand" for a much more passionate, powerful, and FAR better arranged version of "The Stand". After one listen to the original, it will quickly become evident that Smith should not have gone anywhere near this song, no matter how hard he wishes to appear as relevant.

I am a huge Smitty fan. I've gone to several of his concerts and have most of his CD's. Stand was very disappointing. I think it was due to the fact that MWS didn't write all the songs. Also there are a lot of repetitive lyrics as also noted by other reviewers.

I don't drive anywhere without this album in my car. Yoko Kanno has taken her place at the top of my list of favorite composers. Her versatility blows me away. This soundtrack contains a great mixture of music types that stands well on its own besides working so well into the fabric of Ghost in the Shell: SAC. I have to say that the show just wouldn't be as good without her contributions.

I Need Stand Alone Complex OST 3.......2006-11-12

Okay, I thought the first OST was amazing so I assumed OST 2 would let me down. Boy was I wrong! Not only do you get full versions of Rise and Get 9, but you are also gifted with two tracks sung by Ilaria Graziano (I Can't Be Cool and I Do).

But let me back up a bit. I knew I would love this OST more than the first one when I slipped it into the CD player in my car and Cyberbird almost ruptured my eardrums. Unbeknownst to me, the volume was up too high and I didn't turn it down until a cop looked at me funny. I think he liked what he heard but was afraid to admit it.

There are seventeen tracks. Each one is different. From techno to electronica to jazz to pop to funk to a lovely ballad titled I Do. There's a little bit of everything, which is just the way I like my music. If you own Vol. 1 you should add this one to your collection.

Molto interessante, come per il primo CD, che si sia fatto uso di non solo inglese, ma anche altre lingue, ognuna in grado di dare un timbro del tutto particolare ad ogni pezzo. Degno di nota e del tutto inaspettato il risultato ottenuto con la miscela di italiano ed inglese di "I can't be cool".

I liked this cd a lot. The End Of The Universe skit is hilarious. My only gripe, and don't call me a pu**y for saying this, is that he swears too much. I have no problem with swearing, it's just he uses it so much sometimes, it gets annoying. Instead of being part of his act, the whole angry thing becomes his act. At times, it's just annoying. He could easily get across the same jokes without yelling and saying fu*k every two words. Some of this jokes are hilarious while some really aren't that funny. They're observations that we all make, he just yells them.

His best album.......2006-09-06

While all of Lewis Black's comedy albums are very good, his second release, The End of the Universe, remains his best release to date. Released months after the terrorist attacks of 9/11/01, Black's delivery is passionate and intelligent throughout the album. Whether he's ranting on the over the top spectacle that has become the Super Bowl, the U.S. government's lack of common sense, or the ridiculousness of airport security, Black's observations are both humorous and accurate. Also worth noting is that unlike his more recent albums like the Carnegie Hall Performance, the album never becomes long winded or too political. Other tracks that deal with Jerry Falwell's controversial statements about 9/11 and global warming are also very funny and dead on. An excellent album from one of the best comedians working today, The End of the Universe shows Lewis Black at the height of his powers. Highly recommended.
