3 out of 5 stars Oh dear...they've taken their eye off the ball.......2007-01-08

This is not much like their first album (which was a mostly clever, sometimes ham-handed combination of operatic arias and modern electronic instrumentation).

But Shine is pretty much the same ethno-electronica that was pervasive throughout the 90s. Think Deep Forest, Anubian Nights, Enigma, B-Tribe, and even Sting's "Desert Rose". Yawnnnnnnnnnnnn.

Their first album was good mostly because of its orginality (operatic arias are definitely a challenge), but any old fool can slap a "cool" Middle Eastern chant over a modern beat.

What bugs me about both albums is that they don't maintain that singularly operatic quality--it seems to be a sonic delicacy reserved only for a few tracks.

So, with a very few exceptions, this album is a bit contrived.

5 out of 5 stars Stunningly beautiful music.......2004-11-29

I would describe this music as a mellow and unusal mix of music where Enya meets Maria Callas, and I am a fan of both, so that's a good thing. It is so good that Billboard Music called it the best classical crossover of the year!

I would call this music techno opera scene from the future with beautiful opera singing, just to give you an idea of what this music is like! Also, the singer from the Fifth Element soundtrack, Inva Mula sings the song "Mon Amour".
Also singing on this cd is a singer named Shakila. She sings on "Kokab" and "Khodoya". These three are my favorite tracks. Though the cd in whole is a joy to listen to.

We'll say that "Operatica-Shine" succesfully bridged the Middle East to Europe via southern Spain.

So if you're a nu music dj, pick up this cd, so you can really spin an eclectc mix of music - Savannah Skye aka DJ Dakini-NYC...

4 out of 5 stars Better then R&B.......2004-04-16

My wife and I are always looking for new music to cuddle up to, while either watching the sunset, or getting a little heated. I think this album is a great replacement for Barry White, or some other R&B that people often equate with mood music.

These sounds will actually get your heart pounding and blood pumping without forcing you to constantly skip over songs that just get too rowdy.

4 out of 5 stars Very good, yet not comparable to Diva Dance.......2004-03-12

Let me start out by saying that i love this cd. i bought it thinking that it would be like the song Diva Dance from the Fifth Element. It is most certainly one of my favorite cd's but it is nothing like the Diva Dance song. All of the tracks are much slower, focusing more on the opera part, as opposed to the techno/pop. i would still give this cd a splendid 4 out of 5 stars, but i would just like to get across the point that it doesn't have the type of songs that are advertised. thanks.

5 out of 5 stars Opera Today.......2003-08-24

I just bought Operatica:Shine. It is my favorite CD, I strongly recomend it to enyone who enjoys opera! If you like "THE DIVA DANCE" in The Fifth Element you will love this CD!

"Standing on the Edge" is the title track from John Berry's second major-label album (after the six he released himself back in Athens, Georgia). The song--with its Don Henley-like vocal, Jackson Browne-like piano and Fleetwood Mac-like rhythm section--is typical of Berry's approach to country music. Such California pop has little to teach Nashville about lyrics--and indeed the words for this song are so bland as to be forgettable--but it does have something to offer harmonically. This breakup ballad, cowritten by Berry and Stewart Harris, boasts a juicy melodic/rhythmic hook which Berry's strong, handsome tenor warbles convincingly. --Geoffrey Himes

"I Think About it All the Time" came on sataellite radio about a week ago, and I said, "WHO is THAT?!?!" That's all it took! WOW! I LOVE THIS CD!! I've been listening to country for 15 years... Why haven't I heard of John Berry before? Well, whatever... He is GREAT!!!

4 out of 5 stars Good strong country.......2001-01-30

A good album from John. He has a great voice..strong and clear. The hits "I think about it all the time" and the title song are here, as well as 8 others. The 12 page booklet contains lyrics and photos. Anyone who enjoys contemporary country, will like this album for sure. One of my favourites from this album is the Vince Gill/Don Schlitz penned "Prove me wrong". It's a beautiful ballad, and at times John almost does sound like Vince on it.

John Berry is one of the greatest singers in country music. He may not be in the limelight with the other big names, but he deserves to be. He has a wonderful, clear voice that stirs my heart. I can't get enough of him!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful voice!.......1999-03-11

I've seen John Berry in concert and he is a wonderful entertainer, not just for country music lovers. His voice is so clear, warm and melodious. I enjoyed the concert and this album very much!

4 out of 5 stars Standing on the Edge, not quite as good as Next Position Please, the most melodic LP in Cheap Trick's lengthy catalog.......2005-12-20

On Standing on the Edge, The Tricksters get back to basics and rehired the outstanding Aerosmith-esque Jack Douglas (Live at Budokan, Cheap Trick and Found All the Parts, "helper") and 'Rock All Night'. Personally the Tricksters genrally get into trouble when they rock too hard or get too loud (though
One on One is pretty much a gem!) [listen to the pretty lousy 'Woke Up with a Monster(bomb)' again, if you can stand it!

Douglas did a good job on [1977's] Cheap Trick (not quite as good as 1997's C.T.), of NOT OVERPRODUCING this LP (compare
to the wimpy 'In Colour' or awful 'Busted'), as he did with
the nicely raw "Live In The Studio", original Cheap Trick.

Jon Brant almost dominates this album with the best Bass playing
on an album in Cheap Trick history - hint - he pitched the 12-string Bass after this tour. Quick - name anyother Cheap Trick LP where a Cheap Trick Bassist used 4,5,6,8 and 12-string basses
(only on 'Rock All Night'). There simply is no bad songs on this album! There were four more on Next Postion Please and I do tend to like the melodic rock of NPP better - by the width on your index finger spread one centimeter apart from your thumb. Robin's
vocals are better on The Doctor and NPP, but only barely. This LP
had the best 'first side' [vinyl again, kids!] of any Cheap Trick
release in the vinyl era. Rick and Bun E. never sounded better than on this outstanding release. Love it guys. Why couldn't you keep Jon in the group? I know - the record Co. jerks who wanted to recycle Mr. Dagmar, one more time! So sad...

4 out of 5 stars Loud Power Pop From its Forefathers!.......2005-09-02

I can't really review THIS special CD per se (this is supposed to be a Japanese edition, since EPIC records hasn't got the GUTS to re-release this in America), but I will tell you about the songs herein. STANDING ON THE EDGE was a come back of sorts after the terribly weak sounding NEXT POSITION PLEASE album. Now, the NPP album ain't bad at all! It just sounds like a watered down version of CHEAP TRICK. SOTE picks up where ONE ON ONE left off in the sense that the band got back to a punchier production and a fuller sound, reminiscent to that on ONE ON ONE. Although not as stellar as the ONE ON ONE album, STANDING ON THE EDGE has many bright moments and features a long lost 80's power pop gem, "Tonight It's You", which had a video and received decent MTV rotation. It was the band's biggest hit before the syrupy "The Flame". "Little Siter" starts the album with a blast, a loud power pop stomp in true CT fashion. Other stand outs are "How About You", a very vintage sounding power pop number that could have been EASILY included on HEAVEN TONIGHT or even thier debut album. It's this kind of rock style (Up beat, punkish and melodic) that CHEAP TRICK are best known for and the style they should have stuck to (after all, NIRVANA did QUITE well with THIS style!!!). CHEAP TRICK's flirtation with Heavy Metal has always been with them since their first album, and on this one (as well as on ONE ON ONE) is also present on the title track and "Rock All Night", with its AC/DC overtones. They were surely high and above in quality terms to all those dreaded HAIR METAL bands of the 80's.
All in all, this is a very consistent album; a bit TOO 80's for some people, but definitely inmensely superior to thier future output. It's so sad that a band THIS talented ran out of ideas in the end. I'd dare to say that this is probably CHEAP TRICK's last "good" album. Subsequent albums such as "Busted" and even the so called "come-back" album, "Woke Up With A Monster" are nowhere near the sheer power pop delivery of STANDING ON THE EDGE.

3 out of 5 stars watered down blues pop.......2007-06-13

Frankie Miller has a great soulful voice along the lines of America's Bob Seger. I'll tell you right now, if you like Bob Seger and Paul Rodgers, you'll probably dig him. And he actually writes his own songs, and does it quite well. He's from Scotland for those who are knew to him. For me, I was really impressed with some of his other releases, but this one left a bad taste in my mouth. It's not that it's a bad record, but I felt the blues element in the music became weaker. Although the first couple of tracks are quite catchy, it just seemed like he drifted away from those rougher classic rock n roll roots, and settled for something, as I already said, less bluesy, and less soulful as well. I'm more into something that's deeper in blues and soul or old-fashion rock n roll. Someone with different expectations may be quite impressed with this record. For me, personally, I'd rather listen to his other records. Also, although this has nothing to do with his music, but the album cover annoys. It looks like he's too focused on drawing attention than writing songs from his heart. Still, its entertaining and still beats a lot of the other stuff out there.

4 out of 5 stars "THE VOICE" is in fine form.......2004-12-28

"Standing On The Edge" is yet another example of the raw vocal power that Frankie displayed so effortlessly on earlier albums. This is a fine return to soulful hard rock, rather than the polished pop sound of it's predecessor, "Easy Money". Miller's two biggest assets, his big gravel voice and the ability to put a song across, are here in abundance. The Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section guys, plus guitarists like Chris Spedding and Wayne Perkins, remain unrivaled for sheer talent. They're so good they actually sound like Frankie's band, instead of elite session musicians.
4 of the songs were co-written with Andy Fraser, a long time Miller writing companion, with Frankie writing everything else except "Firing Line", a chugging pop-rocker. It's rewarding to hear Miller and Fraser writing again and the resulting tunes are all solid.
If there's any downside it lies in several tunes that run at the same tempo. They could've been done differently, allowing for a bit more diversity of sound. But, the upside is BIG, with some of Frankie's best writing to date. Needless to say, the vocals are superb as always. How he's able to coax the little squeaks, cracks, moans and graoans out of his vocal chords is beyond words. "Jealousy" is a slow smoldering blues and is guaranteed to make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up almost instantly. The ballad "To Dream The Dream" has beautiful wordplay going on thru the entire song. "Angels With Dirty Faces", a bit of mid tempo pop/rock, also has Frankie selecting his words very carefully to good results. "Danger Danger", "Don't Stop", "Zap Zap", and "Standing On The Edge" all rock hard and wouldn't sound out of place on other Miller albums, especially "Double Trouble" or "Full House".
There are only a handful of Frankie Miller albums available. It took a long time for his catalog to be put on CD. I wouldn't recommend this one as a starting point, (try "The Rock" or "High Life") but if you owned any of his albums and were moved by the great vocal ability he had, you should but this disc now.

3 out of 5 stars Not His Best But worth hcking Out.......2002-10-29

I Love Frankie , in 1980 he finally started going for the rock sound I always invisioned he was capable of, unfortunetly the writing is a little thin. But his big voice is always a pleasure to hear sonds like paul rodgers meets robert palmer meets otis redding Full House is the best I';ve heard to date

      3 out of 5 stars Delayed shipping.......2002-06-25

Please go ahead and send Easy Money when it comes in...Is that a positive? I don't know another way to O.K. delayed shipment. It did not work on my computer. Thanks, The Perrys

3 out of 5 stars Their weakest album until 'The Doctor'........2006-05-22

Standing On The Edge, which came out in 1985, temporarily restored Cheap Trick's dwindling fortunes, but I don't think it's really that good of an album. In terms of material and production (or, more appropriately, 'over-production'), I think it was their weakest album until their next one, 'The Doctor'. The overall sound is very messy, with it's mix of heavy guitars, electronic and acoustic drums, synthesizers, guitar synthesizers. Bun E. Carlos is listed as playing 'acoustic drums and cymbals' to let people know the electronic percussion was not played by him and was not his idea!

'Little Sister' is one of the weakest cuts to ever lead off a Cheap Trick album. I especially hate the refrain and the way they sing ' Ooh, little sister! '. Fortunately, the next cut, Tonight It's You, is a terrific song and gave the band a much needed hit, though it just barely missed the top 40. Zander's singing on this is wonderful and for once, the overproduction suits the song well. There are a few other tolerable songs here, like the ballad Love Comes and This Time Around (which both have pleasant vocal melodies), though my favorite tune is easily the title track. Like the title suggests, it's the only edgy tune here...tis very exciting, with a very strong refrain, though Zander screams out the title a bit too much at the end. And the last song, Wild Wild Women, is a very hard rockin' tune, tho' it doesn;t quite live up to it's potential.

I could really live without the rest of this, however, especially the very cliched hard rocker 'Rock All Night'. Compared to the albums that came before it, Standing On The Edge is pretty weak. They've done much better than this, before and since. Still worth checking out for 'Tonight It's You' and 'Standing On The Edge', however...

      4 out of 5 stars Merger Material.......2006-05-01

I have a dream. That dream is for this album to be remastered and re-released but not as it was, instead merge this and The Doctor. Sure they're like chalk and cheese in styles but really, do we need to have a remastered version of She's Go Motion and It's Up To You? Who wants that?

      Take:
      Tonight It's You
      Love Comes
      How About You
      Standing On The Edge
      This Time Around
      Cover Girl
      Kiss Me Red
      It's Only Love
      The Doctor

And you've got yourself a decent album. Maybe add Are You Lonely Tonight instead of The Doctor for something lighter.

      For the original listing though:
We all know how great Tonight It's You Is. How About You and Loves Comes are also winners. Standing on the Edge (the song) is a mixed bag but generally good. This Time Around and Cover Girl are good fillers. Wild Wild Women, She's Got Motion and Rock All Night don't have much to offer though.

      Merge baby, merge............

4 out of 5 stars An unusual album that needs an unusual approach.......2005-07-28

This is an album that needs to be taken into context, with respect to the state of the band in 1985, the state of the music industry in 1985, and the common expectations of a Cheap Trick fan in 2005 raised on the early Budokan and "Surrender" type work, or for that matter any person today.

Twenty years ago Cheap Trick were in the midst of a nearly-crushing commecial slump that had been haunting them for five years, during which bassist Tom Petersson had left the band and had been replaced by Jon Brant. It was difficult to compete with the fast paced changes in popular music culture, especially when they were beginning to be seen (unfortunately and incorrectly) as a band of the past. Because of this, Standing On The Edge slipped through the cracks, allowing some really fine moments to go almost completely unnoticed, with the better known (and outstanding) track "Tonight It's You" as the only real exception.

Several songs come to mind, such as the bluesy and dancable "How About You," a tight song of perfect length, clocking in at just under three minutes. Although some criticize the use of synthesizers in this album, the synthesizers enhance rather than impede this track. There is also "This Time Around," a fresh and uplifting song which contains some of Rick Nielsen's most gorgeous guitar work. "Cover Girl" is also attractive as a fast-paced song with nice vocals by Robin Zander.

The fact that "Love Comes" never became widely known is a real tragedy. The 30 second sample on this page does not do it justice - it is one of the most inspired and outstandingly sincere songs ever written by the band (and for those who have heard the hired songwriter rumor, that person [M. Radice] is not a credited participator on this track as he is on the others). It is hard for me to deny while listening to it that it possibly could have made the top 10 if it had been promoted more as a single.

A few of the tracks are likely to come accross as flawed on the first listen (the reason I give a 4 instead of 5) - mainly the synthesizers in "This Time Around" and the title track, and the gratuitous effects (vocal and other) in "She's Got Motion," "Little Sister," "Rock All Night," and "Wild Wild Women" employed (often inappropriately) to reinforce the strong sexual themes of these songs (which may be a turn-off for some).

Despite these details, ALL of the tracks have great moments, and they all can be enjoyed, and very much so. The thing to keep in mind is that this is not an album that can be appreciated easily for most people the first time listening to it. One must hear it several times over a long period to let it ripen. Some of the songs (less so the ones mentioned in the fifth paragraph) have a very comforting kind of style and feel, a kind of peace and calm that is even reflected in the attractive cover art, but to enjoy all the tracks an unusual approach is needed based on the unusual circumstances that make this album exactly what it is.

5 out of 5 stars A Hard Rockin Cd ..The essential Cd of the 1980's..............2005-03-11

Ok Listen up...This is a true 1980's essential Cd. It starts out with a hard pumpin song "Little sister" written by the man Rick N. it leaves no stone un-turned. We all know how great" Tonight it's you" is but if you want a hard rockin jam than "Standing on the edge" does it, Robin Zander's voice takes over you and you wonder did he ever take a breath" I get pysched up going over the lyrics in my head. This time around" is a great tuned down song with some great lyrics as is "Love comes around"..For the finisher "Cover girl" is fun and has great sing along lyrics that will make you remember why the 80's really were so much fun. This Cd needs to have more attention to it, spread the word..

      5 out of 5 stars Best of.......2005-03-05

Who is writing these negative reviews? Couldn't disagree with you more! I wish I could give it more than 5 stars! I hear any song on this album and go crazy! And I've owned it since it was released. Every song is great! Better than anything before or since...well maybe the Budokan album rivals it. Buy it. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Fast Rocking Amp You Up Fun.......2007-04-08

Dead 50's Sophomore Release. Without a doubt, I'd buy this album just to get All-E-All. The entire cd is full of fun songs with a pounding beat (except "When Life is too Much"). When Life is too Much is a mellow song about depression and alcoholism. Back to the fun ones, you have to love a band that sings about the pride of riding the "Short Bus". It's all Indie rock at it's finest. If you've ever played paintball, you know these guys. They were showcased in the video "Smoked".

          I forgot the Track List:

          1. The One Think
          2. Heck of a Guy
          3. All-e-All
          4. One Too Many
          5. Beautiful Thing
          6. Shame
          7. Short Bus
          8. When Life is Too Much
          9. So Down
          10. Stronger
