Steve Harley's Best Album.......2004-05-05
"Best Years of Our Lives" is the definitive Cockney Rebel album. If you've never heard of the band before, that won't mean much, so let me put things into perspective. Cockney Rebel came onto the UK music scene in the early 70's. Their music could be described as touching on elements of T.Rex, David Bowie, and Roxy Music, but over time they were able to craft their own signature sound. With Cockney Rebel, you got a lot of variety: rock, jazz, opera, and avante garde -- quite a wide style range! They were very big for a time in the UK, but never really made a dent in the USA.
This album contains one of their biggest hits, "Make Me Smile," (which has been covered by a ton of bands and shows up in a bunch of movie soundtracks) but the album as a whole provides the perfect listening experience from beginning to end. My favorite tracks are "Mad, Mad Moonlight," "Best Years of Our Lives," "Make Me Smile," and "Panorama."
Steve Harley is still around and performs several dates a year in the UK. The man can still put on an excellent show and still retains a devoted fan following. If you are a fan of Steve Harley or 70's Glam Rock, do not pass this album up. This is a definite entry on my top ten desert island discs.
Greatest Commercial Success for Steve Harley.......2002-04-02
Only 1 year after the staggering and brooding album "Psychomodo" (see my review there), we find Steve Harley taking a 45 degree turn towards more accessible music and consequently broad commercial success. The original premise of Cockney Rebel (no electric guitars) is abandoned here (albeit only occasionally).
1975's "Best Years of Our Lives" boasts 3 genuine hit singles, including of course the worldwide smash "Make Me Smile (Come Up and See Me)", but the equally delightful "Mr. Raffles", as well as "Mad, Mad Moonlight". Other key tracks include a paranoid "It Wasn't Me", a funky-sounding "49th Parallel", and of course the beautiful title track.
Unlike the "Psychomodo" reissue, this album does contain bonus tracks, and what a find they are! First there is "Another Journey", the B-side of the "Make Me Smile" single, a great track that would have fitted nicely on the original album. Even more interesting is the 11 min. live version of "Sebastian", still perhaps the signature Harley song, from a 1975 Hammersmith Odeon show according to the liner notes. While the track initially stays close to the original, it eventually gives way to an ear-splitting electric guitar solo, which must have come to somewhat of a shock to audiences then, given what Cockney Rebel started out as. A must for any Steve Harley fan!
Harley Must Have.......2000-12-20
As a vintage Rebel fan, I think this is the best of the original records, but they are all damn good in my biased opinion. By the way, in response to an earlier post, certainly in the UK you can get Psychomodo, Human Menagerie and Timeless Flight, I have them all on CD.
Top stuff from Harley.......2000-06-26
They say you either love or hate Cockney Rebel. Personally this album has to be up there in my personal Top 5 of all time. It's strange really, I bought the singles, some of the albums but not, probably, the best in terms of sales until it was released on cd. Tracks such as Mr. Raffles, Back to the Farm, It wasn't me and Mad, Mad Moonlight make the writing here so good it's a wonder the US didn't get into Harley the first time around. Catch Timeless Flight if you can!
One of my Desert Island CDs.......1999-06-08
I first found out about Steve Harley through the music of T. Rex. Finding Cockney Rebel was a true musical blessing. This album in particular is great - "Panorama" and "Mad Moonlight" are two of the best tracks in my opinion. A great piece of work.

Customer Reviews:
Great Compilation.......2006-12-10
Steve Harley-Cockney Rebel might be the most under estimated artist in the world. It's hard to find a person who knows him. His two major hits were Sebastian and Make Me Smile while good, definitely not the best. This is the last compilation to date and the most complete. The selection is really good but as always there are missing songs. In my opinion his best albums were The Human Menagerie, The Psychomodo and The Best Years Of Our Lifes, in that order. I consider The Human Menagerie released under Cockney Rebel and unavailable for years in CD like one of the best albums I've ever heard. I find in Steve Harley-Cockney Rebel certain similarity with Bryan Ferry-Roxy Music. Usually i don't give 5 stars to an album but if you like the british music of the 70's this is an excellent compilation at great price. This is the kind of band you have to buy a complete collection or a good compilation, not download song by song from Internet.

Customer Reviews:
Inexpensive Intro to a Great Band.......2006-04-11
Fans of Roxy Music, Sparks, Mott the Hoople and Roy Wood take note. I usually don't approve of 'hits' compilations, but in this case it's justified. The original albums are only available in the u.s. as pricey imports.
All the greatest tracks from the 1970s.......2004-10-27
This is a thorough compilation of Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel's 1970s output. They were an art rock band with a distinctive, accessible sound, somewhat influenced by contemporaries like Roxy Music and David Bowie. The album includes all their hits and popular album tracks from the 1970s like Make Me Smile, Judy Teen, Here Comes The Sun, Love's A Prima Donna, Freedom's Prisoner, Mr Raffles, Roll The Dice, Psychomodo, Mr Soft, White White Dove and Sebastian. Judy Teen and Make Me Smile are brilliant pop-rock tunes, Sebastian is an impressive piece of proto-Goth and Tumbling Down is a delightful operatic excursion. The other compilation, Best Of 70s, contains more of Harley's solo work plus a lot of these classics. The songs on The Cream Of have stood the test of time very well, because they are tuneful and melodic and the lyrics are special and memorable. Cockney Rebel's unique sound added much to the UK charts in the 1970s. The songs will live on and on.
Good place to start.......2000-09-27
If you're just getting into the music of glam-rockers Cockney Rebel, this is the CD for you. All the essential tracks are here, including the classic "Tumbling Down". Since the first 2 (and best) Cockney Rebel albums aren't available on CD yet, this is your only option to get such great tunes as "Sebastian" and "The Psychomodo", and singles like "Judy Teen" and "Mr. Soft". A little too much from the later, post-75, years but it's still a good compilation. Steve Harley used to be very proud of the fact that no guitars were used on his albums, but with the great violin and keyboard playing, you won't miss 'em either. Imagine a more garage version of Roxy Music with a David Bowie fixation. Great stuff for fans of glam rock.
Rising to the Top.......2000-09-22
Steve Harley was his own worst enemy when it came to public relations, and it ruined his growing career. But time and posterity shuffles the music of the past-- when it all works right, the cream rises to the top and the rest falls away. It looks like this is finally happening with Steve Harley's music-- his imaginative, catchy, and quirky songs have slowly but inexorably been climbing their way into classic status. And that's where several of the songs on this import hits collection should be. Any fan of 1970's glam rock will want to hear Harley & Cockney Rebel's passionate contributions to the style. By comparison, Harley has the cleverness and ingenuity of David Bowie but with more heart, some of the manic flair of Roxy Music but with more warmth, and the popular touch of Brian Eno with greater directness. I recommend this disc enthusiastically.

Nice compilation - and contrast.......2003-07-01
"A Closer Look" was a vinyl compilation released in the USA in the mid-70's in an attempt to bring Americans' attention to Steve Harley, who was then quite succesful in England and elsewhere in Europe. It didn't work, and Harley remains a cult figure at best here. Fans of early Roxy Music and "Hunky Dory"/"Man Who Sold The World"-era Bowie should love his music. This is a good, concise overview of his 3 LP's at that time and has most of the best cuts from them (Sebastian; Tumbling Down; Make Me Smile) -- still, there's recent compilations available which surpass this.
I would have preferred pairing "Closer Look" with "Timeless Flight" (which I did on cassette for my car way back when), but it's an interesting contrast with "Love's A Prima Donna." This was my favorite Harley album back when it was released, but it has not aged all that well. LAPD is reliant on a great deal of studio gimmickry; think of the difference between early Bowie and "Heroes" (a better comparison may be Rundgren's "Something/Anything" and "A Wizard A True Star.") But that title track is a a great single, and this is, overall, a better compilation than the one which combines "Best Years Of Our Lives" (classic Harley) with the later, tamer and duller "The Candidate," about which the less said the better.

Very, very Good.......2007-01-09
This Piece of work of Steve Harley it's one of his greatest, it has different styles, from older tracks and new technology rhythms. As a Steve Harley Fan I recommend to buy this CD, it has a powerful sound, Harley's sound.
Wow, Maybe his best ever.......2006-01-28
As a kid I loved the early Cockey Rebel records, and certainly "Make Me Smile" is a classic single, but his output has been pretty spotty over the years. So I was amazed when I heard this. Every song is strong, and "The Last Goodbye" and "No Rain On This Parade" rank right there with "Make Me Smile". I've had it in the CD player for a week now. His voice sounds stronger than ever and the production is excellent too.

Great collections from a superb artist.......2000-08-25
This is a must for Steve Harley fans. All the basic hits, good sound and great price. After buying this cd, you will apreciate how good Cockney Rebel was, aside from being catalogued as "glam rockers" at that time, the lyrics are something else. David Paton is still a great musician, Stevie puts his soul on every word. Buy it
it's gotta be good.......2000-07-12
come up and see me, make me smile do what you want to - but think seriously before you spend your hard earned cash on a record by a group who only had one hit, albeit a monster. Me, personally, i'm buying it, because i can't live without that track.
