Customer Reviews:
A Must Have for Caravan Fans!!!.......2003-12-19
I love this CD! It has a great energy to it that some of their other live performances lack. Plus they add some funky new ideas that really enhances old favorites such as "For Richard" I thought Pye's guitar work was crisp and clear and his dueling solos with David Sinclair were excellent. Hats off to Geoff Richardson violin work! I have yet to tire of listening to this one!
MOTTS FAVORITE CARAVAN JOURNEY.......2001-10-01
One of the wonderful B.B.C. in concert series released from the dusty vaults of the Government run British Broadcasting Corporation. The band are introduced by D.J. Pete Drummond sounding very serious whilst extolling the virtues of these fine musicians, you must remember that this was March of 1975 when progressive rock was in its hey day all trying to look deadly serious whilst wearing kaftans, beads, & 30 inch bell bottom hipsters, no wonder twelve months later Johnny Rotten & Punk rock come along to breath some fresh life & fun back into Rock ýný Roll.
But does the music of Caravan stand the test of time after 26 years, surprisingly, yes very well indeed.
Back in the late sixties ýThe Wilde Flowersý the senior rock band of Kent, garden county of England, split in two, spawning ýCaravaný & ýSoft Machineý. Caravan helped create a musical style that has become known as the Canterbury sound, a name that has stuck to this sub genre of progressive rock ever since. Surrealist lyrics, humour, & a rock style that incorporated elements of Procul Harum, Jethro Tull & Pink Floyd, The Canterbury sound was a jazzy ý classical ý folk ý ish sound that was still very unique.
Caravan were definetly one of the founding progressive rock bands. Having already recorded seven albums by the time they went into record this concert at the London Paris Theatre.
By then, the 3 original members of David Sinclair, Pye Hastings, & Richard Couglan, had added Geoff Richardson on violin and replaced David Sinclairýs cousin, Richard Sinclair with Mike Wedgewood on bass, who came in from ýCurved Airý.
There are only 4 songs on this hour long concert, 3 of them clocking in just under the 20 minute mark before the final rave up, of the short & sweet audience fave rave, ýHoedowný from Caravanýs fifth album ýFor girls who grow plump in the nightý, the original album sleeve, depicting a naked pregnant women, was vetoed by record label Decca, but a compromise was reached & the women appeared wearing a night dress. Ho ý Hum such are the politics of mid seventies rock. ýFor Richardý comes from Caravanýs 2nd album ýIf I could do it again Iýd do it all over youý which appeared way back in September of 1970. Regarded by many fans as their best work it became a perennial favorite in the live set.
As you can see there were some marvelous titles from Caravans history none better than the trickly titled ýCunning Stuntsý from which the other two musical pieces on this album come from.
This album is a fine showcase for the rich musical talents of a band whose unique contribution to pop music history is unlikely to be forgotten.

Worth a Listen.......2004-11-21
Newcomers are far better served by Generation X's debut album or the Perfect Hits compilation. Longtime fans will probably appreciate this disc, however. The '78 show (tracks 1-8) features the original lineup tearing through some of their best songs. The performances are raw, frantic and sloppy. The only real let down is Idol's voice, which sounds particularly weak. The '81 show features a new lineup featuring ex-Clash stick man Terry Chimes. Idol's vocals had actually improved by this point but the band unfortunately sounds as if they are merely going through the motions. None of these live tracks are as good as the studio versions. None the less, this disc is worth investigating if you already own the other stuff, including the superior BBC studio recordings compilation.
Generation X ups and downs.......2003-01-02
This Live album features two different concerts at two different periods in time. The first part-1978-is the true punk Generation x years on stage.A blasting performance, raw and ugly as it should be!Pure energy with a great sound.
The second part-1981-is the beginning of the end, starting with the hit Dancin' with myself and goin' on with semi pop-punk uninspired songs. The sound is also very good but the performance is quite boring and the audience is pretty quiet too.An interesting cover of Bowie's Andy Warhol.
A good cd on the whole thanx to the powerful first concert and the sound.

Customer Reviews:
Raw emotion and cool electronics.......2006-11-29
This album is what made me fall in love with New Order once again. The people who dislike this album fall into two seemingly opposing categories: Joy division fans who don't like Bernard Summer's higher voice and synthesizer usage, and New Order fans who think every performance should soudn just like the studio. No man this is New Order singing with a heavy Manchester Accent putting forth all the passion and emotion their lyrics hold. You know how when that song you like is on the radio, but you always seem to tune into the middle part of the song. Then one day you hear a odd but familiar intro, and you finally realize that you are goign to hear the song the whole way through and it's awesome. That is what this album is like. My favorite track on this is Perfect Kiss, which is played in entirety, both verses and the little canto at the end of the second verse with the most elaborate and moving performance of Stephen Morris's Frog Croakings. My only complaint is wanting more.
Lousy voice makes it all hard to listen to..........2004-05-11
To be fair, I'm not a major New Order fan, but I always liked "True Faith" and "Bizarre Love Triangle", and found others alright. That being said, given the fact the singer never had a tremendous voice in singing in such a bland way, that concert performances are generally not as well played as original versions, and that these performances add nothing to the original versions in terms of interesting reinterpretations, this performance is dreadful. I've read the band were taking drugs heavily during this 1987 tour. Perhaps this is why the singer's hardly difficult singing is off-tune and lazy throughout. I had to return this awful album. Buy "Substance" or the "International Hits", maybe even Joy Division's "Permanent".
A different view of New Order.......2001-01-23
I never had the chance to see New Order perform live, and having listened to this I'm sorry I never did. New Order on stage is a vastly different proposition than their fussy, perfect production studio albums. The music has a whole different feel live. The spontaneousness actually makes some of their songs more tuneful. The only regret is that the album contains only nine cuts, drawn heavilly from their 1986 album "Brotherhood." That said, this one is definately for fans only. Like most live albums, the appeal is likely to be lost on casual listeners.
Gosh...what do you expect from New Order?.......2000-12-30
Especially to those who slammed the album...really, what do you expect from newOrder? Some sugarwalled and perfect concert live sound on stage? Well, just for your info, the music of newOrder is never meant for live anyway.
They never bother to dress up for their gigs, let alone getting the sound right and studio quality like. Ask any newOrder fan, and this is what they will say too.
This is newOrder, like it or not. They have those once in a blue room world tour, not because they are arrogant, but they never set out to be some kind of rock stars searching for fame or money (perhaps a little).
Not convinced? ;) join the Ceremony (only newOrder mailing list on the net)
Well, I Like It..........2000-11-05
I haven't heard much live material by New Order, but I have heard some others besides the contents of this album and I must admit this is not the best they can do live. This album has its good points and its bad points. I really like the song selection, and the recording quality is excellent. The problem is that several of these songs fall short of their studio versions. The worst example is "Temptation", which does drone on for two or three minutes longer than it has to, not to mention that Barney's singing doesn't sound at all good and the guitars are barely audible. The other most prominent example is "Every Little Counts" in which the bass chords sound unusually distorted. "True Faith" sounds alright, but not nearly as good as the Substance version (which is awesome). On a more positive note, many of the songs to me did equal or even better their originals. "Touched By the Hand Of God" is supported by percussion that sounds quite heavy and very bass-oriented. As a result, it sounds almost like an underground techno-anthem rather than the pop gem its known to be. In similarity, "Your Silent Face" also has a heavy drum beat to it and it works quite well with the synths in that song. My favorite part of this recording is definetly "Bizarre Love Triangle". Sumner's vocal explosions in the chorus show his true passion for this particular number and it easily elevates this rendition to much better than the album version. This is one of the few instances in which all the instrumentation combines to form an orgy of sounds which, if you listen to any of of New Order's proper albums, is what New Order is all about. To me this track alone is worth the admission price. The band also finishes off with a high-caliber version of "Age of Consent", which to me also surpasses the original, and their cover of "Sister Ray." A great song for the guys to rock out to at the end. In conclusion I'd have to say that this CD wouldn't be ideal for those just starting their New Order collection. Get Substance, The Best Of, and their six proper albums first. But I do recommend this for hardcore fans, just for something different. I think its a worthwhile purchase.

Customer Reviews:
the other Bruce.......2006-05-07
Any potential buyers of this Jack Bruce CD should pay attention to the obvious listing error here. While the track listings indicate this CD has fifteen songs, the first two words in the Amazon Review says "nine tracks". Talk about a red flag! While there is a CD version (as well as a DVD version) of Bruce's 'Whistle Test' performance for BBC television, none of the fifteen tracks featured there appear on Jack's 'BBC Live In Concert'. The nine tracks you receive on 'BBC Live...' are as follows:
1. You Burned the Tables On Me
2. Folk Song
3. A Letter of Thanks
4. Smiles $ Grins
5. We're Going Wrong
6. The Clearout
7. Have You Ever Loved a Woman
8. Powerhouse Sod
9. You Sure Look Good To Me
But the confusion doesn't end there. Once you get the disc, you'll be informed that these live tracks were recorded at the Paris Theatre in London in 1977. Well, that just can't be, since the legendary Graham Bond serves as Bruce's right hand man, and he died in 1974 at the age of 37 under the wheels of a train. Quite a comeback! A visit to guitarist Chris Spedding's website lists the concert as taking place in 1971, and that makes sense since the first four tracks are drawn from Bruce's second solo disc, released in 1971, and one track ('The Clearout'), is drawn from his premier solo effort in 1969. We also have one track from Cream's 'Disraeli Gears', an intense and faithful version of 'We're Going Wrong', and a meandering, 17 minute blog of jazz fusion titled 'Powerhouse Sod'. That track was originally a 'West, Bruce and Laing' number (it's featured on their 'Live and Kickin' CD), and as such predictably features a wonderful, all-too-short heavy bass solo from Jack. And to add just another dash of confusion, we have the Graham Bond version of 'Have You Ever Loved a Woman', which was originally written by Freddy King in 1960. Of course the most famous version is Eric Clapton's, which is credited to Billy Myles. This one sounds like the Clapton version, but with slightly altered lyrics.
The music on Jack Bruce's 'BBC Live In Concert' is, not surprisingly, bass heavy (although Jack's bass playing here isn't noticably exemplary, so the mix doesn't really warrant bringing his playing up front), and also heavy into the jazz fusion, which Bruce was experimenting with in the early 1970's. In fact, most of the album would have to be characterized as jazz fusion, with the exception of the rhythm and blues tracks 'We're Going Wrong' and 'Have You Ever Loved a Woman', and the 'West, Bruce and Laing' hard rock sound of 'The Clearout'. Unfortunately, Jack doesn't take to jazz fusion as well as he took to psychedelic rock with 'Cream'. The first four tracks along with the laborious 'Powerhouse Sod' are rather cluttered and disorganized, with each instrumentalist seemingly pursuing their own improvisations. There is a tenor sax player (Art Theman) along for the ride, even though Bond adds his own alto sax at times, and the two show up together in the seven minute closer, 'You Sure Look Good To Me'. Drums are provided by John Marshall, but his two solo's, featured on 'The Clearout' and 'Powerhouse Sod', are remarkably undistinguished. The best feature of the whole production is Bruce's vocals. It's wonderful to hear his soaring, familiar voice, even if the compositions and instrumental backing are inferior compared to the 'Cream' tracks his voice is so strongly associated with.
Although Jack Bruce writes his own liner notes for 'BBC Live In Concert', and he does comment on both the members of his backing band and the songs themselves, his thoughts are brief and seem sugar-coated. Not what one expects from a member of the quintessential power rock trio of the 1960's. But then again, neither is the production, which may be essential for Jack Bruce completists, but serves only to satisfy the curiosity over "what became of Jack Bruce after Cream?" for the rest of us.
Wow!.......2000-01-02
I find anything with Jack Bruce playing on it well worth my hard earned money. This particular line-up of Spedding, Marshall and Graham Bond is mind boggling! Jack Bruce's bass playing is legendary and his vocals are one of the best in rock music for the past 30 plus years. Graham Bond on keyboards is a pioneer. His many solo albums need to be released.
Jack Bruce with semi-god Graham Bond rule.......1999-12-23
This unique performance was bootleged by OH BOY "In concert" 1971. The quality of this CD is greater. We have excellent liner notes from Harry Shappiro - author of Graham Bond biography and master mind of British RnB. Jack is assisted by Chris Spedding on guitar who contributed to Jack's top album "Songs for tailor" and "Harmony row" plus drummer extraordinare John Marshall who also performened on those studio albums and played with Michael Gibbs and Mike Westbrook before joining Soft Machine. This album is a must have for JB fans
