Novelist Cormac McCarthy's literary vision of the wild west is given wide-screen treatment by maverick director Billy Bob Thornton and a cast that includes Matt Damon, Penelope Cruz, and Bruce Dern. Professional country music journeyman Marty Stuart has performed with father-in-law Johnny Cash, Earl Scruggs, and Doc Watson, in addition to a successful solo career. In his soundtrack scoring debut, he provides short, meditative instrumental pieces that are subtly explosive--rife as they are with strains of old-school country and bluegrass. Cinematic strings and orchestral percussion add a welcome menacing edge, augmenting the rustic approach without crossing over into a compromised "countrypolitan" sound. If anything, it might be nice to hear these themes extended. As it stands, the 23 listed tracks are covered in a little under 50 minutes, with many of the cuts barely lasting more than a minute or two. They stand as a new genre of cinematic country minimalism. --Rob O'Connor

Great western soundtrack.......2004-02-28
This is a must buy for fans of western soundtracks. It mixes beautifully symphonic music with Guitar music and spices it up all together with a south of the border flavor. Haunting music that will make you want to never take it out of your cd changer. It also
Features two vocal pieces, the first a spanish song sung by the very talented Raul Malo of the country group the mavericks, the second song is a beautiful ballad sung by Marty Stuart. Though I never owned any cd's of Marty Stuart he earns my respect with composing this film score.(cowboy hats off to you Mr.Stuart)
a very memorable cd.......2003-07-04
I thoroughly enjoyed this soundtrack cd. It soars high on ambiance, romance, and easy listening.

Truly Incredible.......2003-03-12
This album is a masterpiece. Within the first strums of the guitar, you feel as though you are among the southwestern hills. It has immediately become one of my favorites of all-time. The songs are filled with beautiful imagery, enchanting tunes, and haunting melodies. The shortness of the songs in unnoticable, as each song blends into the next, and the album itself serves as one epic journey. It is not meant to be listened to a song at a time, but as a whole. As I said, it is truly incredible. I would recommend it to absolutely anyone.

Deep cuts & the Hits, too!!!!!!.......2007-05-28
What a pleasant surprise, there is so much more to the Brothers Johnson than Strawberry Letter 23, Stomp, etc. The deep LP cuts we played in addition to the hits are here. Titles may not be familar, but the songs are!!!! Bravo & well done, collection. Also remastered to the fullest volume & includes a wonderful booklet with The Brothers history.
Please Q produce one more CD!!!!!!!
I LOVE THIS CD!!.......2007-03-09
This CD takes you back to the days when music was about dancing, partying and feeling good inside. I love mostly all the songs even the ones I hadn't heard before. The real surprise was "Treasure" I did not know they sung that song. I, unlike another reviewer, did not hear any explicit language so I'm not sure which songs they are referring to. I can't wait to play this old school funk for my kids.
keep that funk in my face.......2007-01-25
Great old school funk just listening to the musicians will tell you why music of today has little lasting value. When I listen to this cd I just have one request and that is Louis Johnson why did you change from playing a Fender bass early in his career to that mutted flat sound you get from playing that Gibson.
Great compilation CD.......2007-01-12
If you enjoy the Brothers Johnson and their deep funky basslines, this CD is for you. Songs like Stomp, Get the Funk outta my Face and Strawberry Letter 23 defined the snapping and popping basslines of today's bassists. I highly recommend this for all you old-schoolers!
My first Brothers Johnson experience.......2006-08-28
I bought this album for their two hit songs. They are great. The rest of the album, however a nice funk experience, is loaded with explicit language. I cannot play it around my kids.

Strawberry Shortcake movie songs on cd.......2007-07-04
A wonderful collection of Strawberry Shortcake songs (from several Strawberry movies) for the Strawberry Shortcake fan. The songs are right from the movies which my daughter loves. They're fun, upbeat and so berry sweet. We've had the cd for over a year...maybe two and we still sing these songs together. My daughter is a huge Strawberry Shortcake fan with most of her DVDs, tons of her toys, most of her paperback books, some backpacks, costumes, jewelry, hairclips, pillowcases and even some flip flops. So having the cd was a must. And we have the cd with music from Seaberry Beach and the Berry Merry Christmas. All are cute.
Catchy, fun, G-rated album!.......2006-10-12
MY WHOLE FAMILY LOVES THIS ALBUM! The tunes are so catchy that I caught my husband humming one of them in the supermarket last week. I can't say enough GREAT things about this album. Most childrens albums become so annoying that I actually have hid a few of them from my children until I could secretly donate them to the library. But, this one is a lot of fun. What also impressed me is that EVERY single song is 100% G-rated. There is NO violence, sexual suggestion, or exploitation whatsoever. Actually, the songs have a great message. Call me old fashioned? PERHAPS, but I like for my girls (ages 6, 4 and 2) to stay "little girls" and sing about flowers, smiles, and happy thoughts. This album has also made an EXCELLENT gift for all my daughter's friends. You can gift with confidence that the child will love it and the parents won't eventually hate you for giving an annoying inappropriate gift. You will not be disappointed in this purchase!
Strawberry essential.......2006-02-18
If your swett girls loves this berry sweet girl, you have to get this cd too.
Strawberry rules!.......2005-12-08
I just cannot say enough good things about this cd. Our daughter, 2, has recently become a Strawberry fan, and I was happy to encourage this since I loved Strawberry when I was little too. This cd has wonderful songs from the DVDs. All three of our children get excited to listen to this in the car, and I enjoy it too! The best song, in my opinion, is the birthday song.
Strawberry Jams - Strawberry Shortcake.......2005-10-24
This CD is absolutely wonderful. I am in Australia so Strawberry Shortcake merchandise is not as readily available down here as it is in the USA, so you can imagine my daughters delight when this CD is being played.
The songs are just gorgeous - I just wish they were a little longer.
I thoroughly recommend this item to any little SS Fans.

The right song at the right time.......2007-04-02
If you asked me what song epitomizes the sixties, I'd answer "Incense and Peppermints".
I remember having the original album my mom bought me. I was about 15/16 at the time. My impression of the song was that it was slick and trendy-sounding and that these guys were cashing in quick on it. Like a "Time" magazine cover article set to music. Rumor had it that the lead singer on "Incense and Peppermints" was hanging around the studio in SF. The band persuaded him to sing it and he was never heard from again. In fact, no one apparently even knew his name. Perfect publicity.
The best of the late 60's.......2006-12-29
This is a compilation, but the original Incense and Peppermints album was really revolutinary for the time. I will date myself now, but I remember hearing this song on the radio in our car and was mesmerized by it. It was the first Lp I had ever bought. I actually wore out the groves on the Lp and came across another a few years ago. To this day, almost 40 years after I first heard the Strawberry Alarm Clock, I still like Incense and Peppermints as well as their other songs. Their style ranges from acid rock to jazz. The musicians are all very talented and the band works as a team as opposed to many of the bands of the era. Their recordings are really high quality and certainly not over processed like a lot of today's music is. SAC was in an era where 60's music was in transition from the early Beatles and old time R&R sound to a more acid rock sound. Lyrics like 'tune in, turn on, turn your eyes around.. look at yourself' were typical of SAC's lyrical style as well as the thinking of the times. It was an odd time. On one side, we had Woodstock, mini-skirts, muscle cars and fun fun fun, But, on the dark side, there were civil rights problems and the Viet Nam war. This transitional period was a kind of awakening for the country and for music. Although not as popular as names like the Doors, Jefferson Airplane and Steppenwolf, the Strawberry Alarm Clock still had a huge following. My only regret is that I didn't get a chance to see them (or the Doors!) when they came to the city where I lived during the late 60's. This album is a nice compilation of SAC's hits. The songs are as fresh and original sounding as they were almost 40 years ago.
Psychedelic Plus.......2006-11-29
This compilation album of Strawberry Alarm Clock tracks is no doubt rooted in the psychedelic sixties. The band is most known for `Incense and Peppermint,' but this album shows that there was much more to the band. Strawberry Alarm Clock's talent lies in composition. The album showcases several distinct styles that they blend with psychedelic rock. The song `Starting out the Day' is a good example of this. The song starts out with blaring horns and percussion that reminds me of early Herb Albert and the upbeat tempo and production could be a Tom Jones production. Another good song is `Barefoot in Baltimore.' Again, this song is less psychedelic and more inclusive of other genres of the era (a little Burt Bacharach maybe). Because I cite other artists does not mean that SAC was impersonating, rather they were able to incorporated many different styles into their music. If you like the psychedelic, jam rock of the late sixties, you will appreciate the music, to all others it may seem cliché and dated.
IT WAS A VERY GOOD YEAR.......2006-07-19
Ok, so its not great, but it was a very good year for all the
hippy trippy lyrics and paisley shirts and the commercial alternative was so much better. Still, its a fun album and needs to be put down, man!!!
riot67 is clueless........2005-12-18
yes these songs do sound a bit dated, but guess what? they're from the 60's...wow, imagine it sounding like the 60's. it's not all hippy stuff and even if it is its still better than hip hop and todays pop crap. oh, and 80's new wave is a lot better than hip hop and modern pop as well. cheers.

I own several CDs in this series and this one, unfortunately is the one that comes off the shelf the least. Even since loading the contents up MP3 style into my computer and iPod only a few get played. Only a select few truly sound like the alternative radio I grew up with in the 80s.

Customer Reviews:
Girl Power 80's style........2006-11-30
Strawberry Switchblades time in the hit parade was short lived. They deserved more success than they received. This CD is made up primarily of the tracks from their debut self titled album from 1985. The only real hits they had were Let Her Go which reached the lofty position of #59, their cover of Dolly Parton's Jolene #53 and their biggest hit was Since Yesterday which got to #5 on the UK charts.
The CD sounds great. It doesn't say if it's been remastered but it sure sounds like it. I've never heard the single Jolene before but I assume that the version presented here is the 12" version as it clocks in at 6:12.
It's great to finally have this album on CD.
cut to the quick review.......2006-07-09
i have not purchased this although I was quite suprised that there was actually a "greatest of.." collection by SS around. I figured that there were few people besides me in the States who had even heard of them. these girls are hot in a cute, candy sort of way and take me back to high school and dressing in black eyeliner and enjoying the explosion of funky alternative music and fashion. I had their deput album on vinyl then, and many many years later found a japanese import on CD. it is one of the prize pieces in my CD collection. I also was able to find "Jolene", a remake that Dolly herself would be proud of. In my modest opinion, the three big hits for them were "Since Yesterday", "Jolene", and "Let Her Go", but other people might enjoy their slower tracks. They were a great duo who could have, I think, evolved into something magical. But oh well...

Buh-buh-buh-buh-Berry Good Music!.......2005-04-14
Who can't resist singing the theme song to Strawberry Shortcake? The music rocks and the lyrics are catchy. The songs on this CD are taken from three recently released Strawberry Shortcake DVDs: Seaberry Beach Party, Adventures on Ice Cream Island, and Play Day Surprise. My 5-year-old and 3-year-old daughters really enjoyed watching the movies, so we got the CD so we could enjoy the music in the car. As an added bonus, the CD insert includes song lyrics, names of the singers, and song lengths.

Album Description
Jess Klein's Strawberry Lover is the follow-up to her Rykodisc debut, Draw Them Near and her stint in the acclaimed "Voices On The Verge." Strawberry Lover is a testament to hard-won innocence, a defiant statement of open-heartedness, and an exhilarating mix of soul and rock that brings us back to what we love about music, and what we forgot.

Almost rock, almost folk! Too perfect for words........2005-03-31
I was driving in the car one day listening to folk radio and they played a song called "Strawberry Lover" and I thought it was really good. I went to try and download it but I couldn't find any of the tracks. I decided to go and buy it and it was worth every penny, especially since it was such a great price. While some of the tracks seem to lag a bit (Soda Water) or are repetitive, (Darkroom, Sink My Teeth In) they are at least listenable and are more than made up for by the other tracks. The catchy "Shonalee", "Shootout at the Candy Shop" and "Office Girl" are definitely tracks you will want to sing along with. The blissful and dreamy "Strawberry Lover" is wonderful, as is the playful "Ribbons", but this album is far better than just its title track. While the piercing vocals on "Orphanage Rage" are tough on the ears, the song is very accurate in how children feel about their parents. Jess Klein saved the best for last in "Bombs are Falling" and "Willing to Change." These two are definitely the folkiest ones on the disc, but the lack of electricity and volume is not a factor due to the quiet and peaceful melodies of both tracks. The ultra-tragic "Willing to Change" is definitely a tearjerker but it has a happy ending, so you don't have to feel so bad. The real tragedy is that this is the end of the album. Perhaps some more material will be forthcoming. It is all so fantastic, I would be more than willing to pay triple what I did for Strawberry Lover if it were even half as good!
Hooray for intelligent pop.......2005-03-30
This CD should be getting more attention than it is. The songwriting is excellent, the production is solid with some nice creative touches, and the vocals are on target. Most of these songs are radio friendly. It's music to enjoy both lyrically and musically. There's nothing pretentious here. Just straight ahead music that's wonderful to listen to.
I listen to a lot of CDs, a ridiculous amount, every year. This one stands out as something out of the ordinary. And yet, there is not an ounce of buzz about this CD. Reviews are scarce. It's like this CD doesn't even exist in the world. And that's a shame.
OK, enough ranting. But why this CD isn't doing as well as other singer/songwriter CDs that have burst from the pack (and that lack Klein's level of lyrical talent) - Lamontagne, Yamagata, Lee - is perplexing to me. It may be that Ryko just doesn't know how to do marketing. Josh Rouse and Kelly Willis have also been on this label and have gone nowhere in the US in terms of visibility. Maybe Ryko is a lame label in terms of getting their artists exposure.
If that's the case, well shame on them. But I think that another element is at work. This music has a sophisticated use of language and sensibility that just doesn't happen in mainstream pop. It just may be too smart for general consumption. Artists like Jess Klein have the goods to be stars. But mass appeal may depend on being a little simpler and more predictable (and ultimately boring). So people like Jess Klein and Jill Sobule end up having small loyal fan bases. Hopefully for artists like these, the fan bases are big enough to pay the rent.

Real smooth, gentle and relaxed.......2004-12-18
Like to say this I'm the 2nd reviewer who's reviewing this album peers to be a rating classic. I luv Grover for the way he touch his style and max it on w/ some grooves on this CD. He actually have some guest appearances on this album incl. B.B. King, Richard Tee, just to name a few others I can't name.
Well first of all, this is a must-have.
Smooth And Relaxing.......2000-07-17
The sounds of Grover Washington's saxaphone are indeed very soothing. The special effects from the synthesizers and the precussion merely add to the songs rather than over color them as other artists sometimes do. The themes on each of the songs are quite memorable. Caught A Touch Of Your Love is probably the most memorable piece on this collection as BB King delivers some fine vocals and guitar licks in between Grover's tender saxophone sounds. The Look Of Love, Monte Carlo Nights, and The Title Track also are very memorable mostly due to the balance between the instruments. The bass lines on Monte Carlo Nights are just pulsating. Anyway, its hard to beleive that I am the first one reviewing this recording because this collection defintiely needs to be bought!
