Struts and Shocks

Editorial Reviews
Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide, August 2001
"Seana returns to the dreamy noise-pop of the Swirlies on her excellent debut. Ingratiatingly melodic songs, models of economy."

Product Description
Full-length CD Aug 2002 KC017 Struts & Shocks, Seana Carmody's first solo album, is fully representative of where she's been in her musical career (see bio) and who she is now. It's rich and multi-faceted, one minute reposing in the gentle land of dream-pop and the next busily ripping into noise strata via tangles of roughhewn guitar. There is a canniness of craft in these songs, so fully realized despite their mostly economical 2-3 minutes in length. Yet when Seana does choose to stretch out into space rock territory, she does it with the aplomb of a seasoned traveller. And traversing the changing musical dimensions is that voice, sounding alternately naive and seductive, but always steadfast, sure, and lovely. Assisted by Orrin Anderson from former band Syrup USA and Adam Brilla from Lockgroove, Seana Carmody makes all the right moves on Struts & Shocks. Listeners will be moved right along with her.

5 out of 5 stars Imagine Ween with laptops..........1999-02-25

from Thrust Quarterly by John Sekerka

Among others, Negativland, Flaming Lips and Lord Buckley are listed under influences. Curiosity meter should be peaking right about now. As mere CDs go, this platter from the ensemble with the fancy big moniker, which by the way I profess to admire, is a gateway to a mutli-media phenomena that could only berth in the la-la land of San Fran. As the liner notes read: "You jiggies must be plum moldy." Hah! I couldn't've garbled it better meself. About time someone took those damn computin' devices and delivered some notes of distinction. Hacks they may be, but Here Are The Facts You Requested (HATFYR to close associates) know how to get good and groovy. That helps. Especially when ya cram a shitload of data overkill in yer allotted five minute single span. Despite the tech aspect, listening is most pleasurable, and darn right peppy. Imagine Ween with laptops, and I don't mean dances. This is darn right yummy, and includes an askew version of Prince's "1999" that doesn't make me wanna destroy the human species. Follow my lead lads, this is the goods.

4 out of 5 stars weird and wonderful, as all music should be.......1998-11-21

If the envelope of pop music is to be pushed beyond its current boundaries, this is the type of album which will do it. Experimental but never annoying, catchy but never cloying, Shocks and Struts is 100% fun. If you know someone who has ears, this is the perfect stocking stuffer.

4 out of 5 stars The Soundtrack for Sunday afternoons........1998-10-06

Cozying down in the living room, reading the Sunday paper, can't imagine a more perfect CD to be listening to. Vocalist/cellist, Akire, has an ethereal pair of lungs. A music lover's must have.
