Product Description
Japanese three song EP, in the 13-minute range. Packaged in a limited edition mirror-embossed hard jacket sleeve. The word 'jungle' here seems to be used in the more traditional (i.e. Martin Denny) sense, exotica-laden samples & enchanted island vox & human rhythms (sped up to completely alien tempos, perhaps the only 'jungle' jungle oriented activity herein) that don't fail to confound your sense of well being. This southwestern super session brings together Cesar Rosas and David Hidalgo of Los Lobos, Chicano country stars Freddy Fender and Rick Treviño, Texas rocker Joe Ely, norteño accordion wizard Flaco Jimenez, and Tejano bandleader Ruben Ramos to pay homage to the Texan-Mexican tradition. The music is acoustic and generally string-driven, with guitars and violins recalling early mariachi and dancing accordion lines. There are some great party tunes, but ballads are the rule, and Treviño and Fender both show superb grace in their vocals. Ely turns in a heartfelt version of Woody Guthrie's "Deportee," but almost all the songs are in Spanish (with translations in the booklet). Each features only one or two of the headlining singers and there is none of the crowded feel of some all-star efforts, just a relaxed and swinging exploration of the classic Tejano sound. --Elijah Wald

4 out of 5 stars tradicion, tradicion.......2007-02-19

Great collection of talent presenting traditional material without irony. Neither artificial emulation of the past, nor snarky remakes, this album is classic music presented by top musicians at the peak of their form. You don't have to be Latino to love it.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful traditional mexican music compilation.......2006-11-05

I know everybody calls this music and the artists who sing it "tex-mex"
or "conjunto music". On other occasions this may be right f.e. The Texas
Tornados, Los Lobos etc. but this wonderful CD - except for 2 songs -
is 100% traditional Mexican music varying from huapango to bolero,
from norteño to jarocho. No one would say after listening to it
that all these 7 musicians, except one, were North American born citizens
although of mexican origin.I would like to render my respects especially to
the late Freddy Fender who passed away only 3 weeks ago.
One day before he died I reviewed his "La música de Baldemar Huerta" CD and
rated it with 5 stars because you can't give 6! Quite a surprise to find out
he also participated with the Super Seven besides his incredible contribution
to the Texas Tornados.
He started out as the Be-Bop Kid, then became a C&W star and
ended up being probably the best and most important contributor to the
Mexican-American music blends.
Besides the mentioned "Baldemar Huerta" CD, this Super Seven gathering
is without any doubt one of the nicest CD's of my 45 years record buying history!

5 out of 5 stars Great music!!!.......2005-04-13

I love this CD. It combines an interesting mix of artists whose music together or individually is great. The ballads are wonderful and the whole cd is wonderful to listen to. I would recommend it highly!

3 out of 5 stars Not my taste.......2005-01-01

I readily accept all the other reviewers' assertions that this album represents outstanding Tejano music--it's just not my taste. I have no previous experience with this musical tradition, and I was hoping for something more along the lines of Eddie Palmieri or Arturo Sandoval. To me, this sounds like the kind of pleasant but bland music one would barely notice in the background at a Mexican restaurant. If you're hoping for something with drive or a bit of an edge, this isn't it.

5 out of 5 stars Total Enjoyment.......2003-08-29

Wanting some Fiesta CD's, this will be selected. It is great music, and example of the power of music to soothe and bind people together in trying situations.

I love this music, and will play it often.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001

Formed in 1998 as a loose collective of (mostly) Texas musicians with a love for traditional Mexican melodies, Los Super Seven took exactly one week to produce a self-titled debut that was an offhand marvel of norteño tradition and intimacy. Three years later, four of the original members--including David Hidalgo and Cesar Rosas of Los Lobos--return for Canto, but their musical ambitions have broadened from Tex-Mex house party to pan-Latin musical summit. Boasting guest appearances by Brazilian tropicalismo heavyweight Caetano Veloso, Los Angeles-based Cuban pianist Albert Salas, and Peruvian diva Susana Baca, Canto features some of the old-world romantic charm of Buena Vista Social Club (listen, in particular, to Raul Malo croon the album-opening "Siboney"), but the CD doesn't shy away from the subtler, breathier charms of Veloso or Baca's sophisticated Afro-Latin pop on "Drumi Drumi Mobila." Canto reaches its pinnacle on "Teresa," a Hildalgo-sung gem that mixes the rock experimentalism of Los Lobos with the percussive piano attack of Salas and a complex undertow of polyrhythms. At times like these, Canto sounds both like a logical extension of Ry Cooder's multimedia global juggernaut, and a not-so-subtle reminder that new musical traditions are often carved out by ignoring geographic boundaries. --Keith Moerer

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant, Brilliant, Brilliant.......2006-08-27

Over-the-top reviews are hard to believe, but figure it -- why would anyone take the time to do this if they don't love or hate something? I LOVE this CD. It burst into my life a few months ago and it hasn't left. The best cut is "Me Voy Pa'l Pueblo" which is such an upbeat tour de force, both infectiously and musically. But that's just my first favorite. There are my other favorites: Siboney, Calle Dieceseis, El Pescador, Compay Gato, Campesino. Unbelievable amount of great songs and renditions on one CD. It's hard to believe this CD was recorded in one week, but it goes with the miracle that it is -- that this sort of meeting of talent and thrill doesn't happen often anyway so why shouldn't it happen in one week!

5 out of 5 stars Music to drink margaritas by..........2004-12-28

This is like a Mexican/Texan supergroup with various musicians mixing it up on various songs. Some of the musicians who come and go are Raul Malo, David Hidalgo, Cesar Rosas, Steve Berlin, Rick Trevino and many more talents. Every song is sung in either Spanish or Portuguese which usually makes it harder for me to appreciate but this CD is so great, I had no problem getting past the foreign lyrics. This is music to drink margaritas by!

5 out of 5 stars A fine mix.......2004-07-24

This album takes off in an interesting different direction for this group. I stumbled onto it on REal Rhapsody and was hooked right away. A fine mix of old standards that any latin music fan will recognize, but all done in distinctive, ear-catching ways. New tunes as well, and the funny but right addition of Veloso's Brazilian portuguese into the otherwise Spanish mix. Fairly straightforward arrangements but all performed with a clear passionate love for the music. Fine recording too. I'm a big latin music fan, have listened to the entire brilliant variety of musics from the latin world, and this album is right up there with the best.

5 out of 5 stars Latino Offering Much Diversity.......2003-08-29

This collection of Latino music and musicians from around globe is certainly in a trajectory away from Los Super Seven, but still in vein of the richness and beauty of this passionate music genre. Especially into "Me Voy Pa'l Pueblo" and "Teresa."

Neat added touch of comments by performers with the words and translation of each cut!

5 out of 5 stars Second Installment is a Smash.......2003-03-06

Canto, the second offering from Los Super Seven, is different from the debut album, but in a good way. Notably absent from this album is the norteño inspired accordion work of Flaco Jimenez, Canto expands beyond Mexican music and expertly interprets Caribbean and South American rhythms. Raul Malo's vocals on "Siboney" are particularly wonderful as is Rick Treviño's work on "El Que Siembra Su Maiz." The Super 7's tribute to Arlo Guthrie, on "Campesino", is especially warming to anyone who has ever known anyone who toils under the hot sun. Perhaps the best song on this album, after Siboney, is the Cuban standard, "Me Voy Pa'l Pueblo," which reminds me of lazy days on a Caribbean beach.

Many will compare this album to works by the Buena Vista Social Club, which is flattering and true only in that both albums are wonderful. The rhythms and artistry will render the fact that this is a Spanish language album moot. If you have a Susana Baca or Buena Vista inspired album in your collection, then you must purchase this album.

This supergroup with ever-changing personnel (no longer limited to seven) is less a band than a bilingual concept and boundary-crossing vision. The third and most rambunctious release under the Los Super Seven banner takes its title from the ZZ Top anthem celebrating the Mexican border radio of the 1950s and '60s. With the title track sung by Tejano mainstay Ruben Ramos, the transgenerational duet on "Cupid" by Freddy Fender and Rick Trevino, and the alcohol-fueled mariachi of "The El Burro Song" performed by the Mavericks' Raul Malo (a ringer of Cuban descent), the Hispanic imprint on the project remains much in evidence. From the northern side of the musical border, Lyle Lovett revives Bob Wills's "My Window Faces the South," Rodney Crowell renews Buddy Holly's "Learning the Game," and Joe Ely covers Holly acolyte Bobby Fuller's "Let Her Dance."

Perhaps the album's dominant influence is that of the late Doug Sahm, whose Sir Douglas Quintet was a Tex-Mex trailblazer. Sahm's spirit is channeled here through two songs he wrote--"I'm Not that Kat (Anymore)," sung by John Hiatt, and the jazzy "The Song of Everything," performed by Raul Malo--and another one he recorded, "Talk to Me," given a soulful reading by Delbert McClinton. However wide the musical range, the results rarely fall short of super. --Don McLeese

If you have the first Los Super 7 CD you will realize that there can't be
anything better today nor in the future. I classified that album as one
of the best of the past 45 years. The next CD "Canto" was alright but
this third one was a deception somehow because it isn't a genuine LS7
gathering. Of course I understand that it's more an educational record
on how the border radio stations were like in those days and the music
you could listen to. I love blues and country and if it had been done
by Los Super Seven I would probably classify this better but first of
all there are only very few recordings by the original S7 and secondly
I just don't like most of the selected songs. The first song "El Burro
Song" is great but ridiculous at the same time. This great typical
jarocho sound song sung in English??? It's like if a nice blues song
were recorded in Hungarian! Who could figure that out? The LS7 spirit
can only be found on song 2 and 9 both interpreted by Rick Treviño.
The rest can be forgotten at least on a Los Super Seven record!

4 out of 5 stars Texas Border Radio Remembered.......2006-01-12

What it means to be Texan, musically speaking, can just not be described to sons or daughters of the other lower 47. it just has to be heard and experienced. Between the diminutive borderlines of most other states there is culture and certain musical essences. But none, I believe, quite compare. (Typical Texan Braggadoccio I know. But I mean no disrespect) I've given "Heard It On The X" a good listen, and that unique mix of Country, Blues, Traditional Mexican, Swing and Pop, that is the natural part of all Texans, is well represented here. It is a bright and fun listen, as well as a slightly glossy nod to the old days of Border Radio, in the 60's particularly. I'm not a true fan of all the individual artists performing here, but the artistry and song selection is the main measuring stick for me. Great songs! Great musicians! Great engineering! all make for a terrific CD. It is an invitation to dance and smile and have a good time, South Texas style, to anyone listening. "Heard It On The X" is well worth the money. You won't be disappointed if you know what you are getting.

4 out of 5 stars This Is Not Really A Review.......2005-09-20

Just three observations:
1) Delbert McClinton has become the American Van Morrison
2) Given the music that this album pays tribute to, it could have used a little more spit and a little less polish. That is to say that the proceedings are a bit too tasteful in an NPR kind of way.
3) Observation #2 won't matter that much if you play this CD loud enough, and with the right beer. (I recommend Bohemia.)

5 out of 5 stars unbelievable!.......2005-07-31

In this day and age of lip syncing and homogonized, packed for the masses music it is pretty refreshing to listen to this disc. Great musicians and great songs makes for one terrific disc. I could go on and on, but believe me, this is the best disc so far this year. Guaranteed you'll NEVER hear music this good on the radio!

5 out of 5 stars Don't Compare This To LSS 1&2. Just Enjoy It!.......2005-05-30

I have Los Super Seven's first two CDs and they kill. Wonderful original music; a cross-cultural blend of latin-american, carribean, and brazilian herbs and spices. But as indicated by another reviewer don't expect that with LSS 3. This is more traditional border music represented individually by blues, tex-mex, and country swing. It may not be original but who cares! This is great music. With each playing the songs get better and my toes tap harder.

Great music for a party or a prelude to good lovin'.

This is the best of the short time CDs (That more properly should have been boxed as a set)- this one is musical and intense, with overtures to the Mekons mixed it (and you can't go wrong with that really).

Some of the others of this series (i've reviewed a couple) were little more than simple rudimentary jams - sounding a great deal like kids with new found instruments powering through 3 chords and basic rock beats.
But this one - is musical.

I really enjoy the boredoms brand of rock/jazz/transe/oddball recorded snippets - but they sometimes are a bit forced.
    This one works however.

      Album Description

"Super Roots 5" consists of one 64-minute freak out called "GO!!!!!" and is the centerpiece of the entire Super Roots series. It's a sublime mélange of churning guitar, electronics, crashing cymbals, and bowed percussion. A warm, maximalist rock spin on Japan's then-burgeoning "power electronics" scene; a massive, molten copper disc absorbing all the power of the sun. It's this piece that most connects to their future psych/trance/drone-based efforts.

Despite clocking in at a whopping 4 feet eleven inches, Lee Scratch Perry looms head and shoulders over reggaes history, much like the gorilla on the cover of this album. Not only is Perry regarded as having taken roots dub to new depths, many people (likely including Perry) would assert that he invented it himself. Noted both as an engineer and producer, it was at his Black Ark studios that Bob Marley recorded some of his earliest tracks (which Perry then sold to Trojan Records, allegedly pocketing the cash and effectively derailing his relationship with Marley). Always flamboyant (his attires suggests Sun Ras Salvation Army stylee), Perry presided over the Upsetters, a number of whom would come to greater notoriety as Wailers. The Upsetters had performed on Max Romeos earlier success, War Ina Babylon (also on Hip-O Select), and Perry, who seemed to inhabit the studio 24/7, felt it was time to unleash his studio band as a performing unit in its own right. Comprised of a half-dozen-strong percussion session, a horn section of similar size, and several vocalists including Prince Jazzbo and Perry himself, the Upsetters took a dark and swampy turn on this disc. The congas and bass hold down the bottom end with an almost ominous interplay, and the vocals swirl in and out in a tropical fever state. When they put the albums motto on the front cover, proclaiming Dub It Up Blacker Than Dread, they werent fooling. As it states in the opening verse of Zions Blood, I and I shall never fade away. By making albums such as Super Ape, Lee Perry guaranteed it.

            Album Description

This EP finds the group tackling the theme to the Japanese TV show "Jungle Taitei". It would seem that they took the title literally, as the otherwise majestic track is sliced into thousands of pieces by 250 BPM beyond-gabber drum programming. Yann Tomita's blessed out "Laughter Robot's Hemp Mix" helps to bring the track back to earth, with spacey, phased percussion and heavy electronic dub passages.

5 out of 5 stars This is the one you want.......2006-03-21

I've been buying various Lee Perry/Upsetter compliations and Lee Perry productions over the past few months. I love all that Black Ark stuff, but everything else absolutely pales compared to this.

            In a word, incredible.

"Super Ape" is available from Amazon.co.uk. Got it for less than $20 including shipping.

5 out of 5 stars Seminal Dub Album........2004-11-09

This is a seminal dub album. Right up there with Augustus Pablo's "King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown." True genious. Can't find the album in stores? Did someone say "Lime Wire?"

            5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Essential!.......2003-04-07

No roots reggae collection is complete without this CD, plain and simple. One of the greatest roots/dub albums in history.

5 out of 5 stars The Upsetters at their best.......2003-02-12

This CD incorporates the entire spectrum of the Black Ark sound which was the peak of Lee Perry/producer. This is in the top 5 percent of dub albums. The best thing about this cd is that it has it's own distinct sound (eerie, roots, and mystical). Prince Jazzbo and Full Experience vocals weave in and out of the songs like a dream. This is the one album fans of the Black Ark sound cannot be without.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Reggae/Dub Album in the History of the Universe.......2002-11-09

Super Ape is the most authentic roots reggae dub album ever. If you can find it, get it. The tracks are chilled out and really trippy. I can't imagine reggae being any better, ever.
