    Moving more in the recent fashion of Jim Black's Alasnoaxis and Pachora, Chris Speed's yeah NO! (which appears as simply "yeah NO!" on this disc) presents an album focusing mostly on songs and arrangements. And what an album it is!!! From end to end, the pieces the band performs resonate with a purity and beauty of songcraft which is typically the mark of great non-jazz. Instead of taking lots of solos, the band capitalizes of group interplay, sometimes with two members building melodies off of one another (as in Speed and Vu's playing in "Camper Giorno"), and sometimes evincing Yeah No's freer abilities (as in "He has a Pair of Dice"). Other times the band simply focuses on building group dynamics (particularly in Sverisson's "Cloud Stopper" and Speed's "Staircase Genius"). "Cloud Stopper," which is reminiscent of Sverisson's "Drifting" (from Pachora's Astereotypical) particularly hits the mark in terms of composition, immersing the listener in the group's multiple layers. Chris Speed's "Born in the Air" sounds like a foray into Pachora's territory, as it utilizes the 7/8 rhythm of the Balkans to create a smoothly lilting number. Speed and Vu sound incredible together on this and Speed's clarinet solo is brilliantly uplifting. Being a bassist, I must underscore that Sverisson is one of the best bassists I've ever heard. His choice to use the six-string electric allows him to give the band a HUGE bottom, while also giving him the ability to utilize chords (which he often employs to great effect). Indeed, many of the tunes rely on him using this dual approach and Jim Black keeping a tight groove while the others build melodies off one another. The rhythm playing in the aforementioned "Born in the Air" is so deep in the pocket that you almost think that Jim and Skuli can read each other's minds. All and all, this is one of the best records of 2004 and that anyone who likes great music should check it out before Yeah NO! puts out something more amazing.
