Customer Reviews:
modern day rock ... let's give it 3.5.......2006-02-05
Cherry Valence were always a stellar act to catch live but their recorded efforts failed to capture that raw energy that is so essential with these current rock and rollers. they have a strong love of the boogie woogie (think Nugent, Montrose, etc.) and infuse it with some good garage punk stylings and even give a nod to prog rock by using a two drummer line up (which seems rather wasted within the small range that these songs explore). probably the best contemporary reference band would be Drunk Horse, but with less of a jazzy touch. Cherry Valence has a powerful start on this disc with the opening blast of "Sunglasses and Headlights." and the full-throttle shake up of "Minutes" and "Only Game In Town." but as the cd continues, i find myself a little bored...i'm not sure why exactly. all the songs are well-written and most have a hook or two that's worth the time...but nothing much encourages me to latch onto this band with an intamate devotion. but, for a rock and roll record made in 2005, it stands out as a good one. the guitars have a sweet dual harmony within some of the leads that is Thin Lizzy to the bone. other times, AC/DC and KISS worship pop up to remind everybody of who the real gods are...and that may be the problem with most of these current rock and roll bands these days. while listening to albums like TVC3 you're thinking, "yea...this is good...but i'd rather be listening to Alive III or Back In Black." that kind of conclusion is almost inevitable to me. but overall...good show.
