This young blues/soulman is already a road-hardened veteran, having released his debut back in 1994. Loomis's second disc for Blind Pig shows that the Texas-bred musician has matured into an experienced songwriter, a compelling vocalist, and a talented multi-instrumentalist, proficient on drums, bass, guitar, keyboards, and harmonica. If needed, he plays them all, as on four tracks here. Hardcore blues fans may not approve, but Loomis uses Johnny "Guitar" Watson's late-'70s albums as his template for this slick yet enjoyable and immaculately produced album. Not only is Watson's "Bow Wow" covered in this set dominated by originals, Loomis also nestles into a similar groove between the easy funk, R&B, blues, and pop that defined Watson albums such as A Real Mother for Ya. It's a slinky, sexy, and often sensual style, updated with the occasional drum loop and a sonic sheen that sands off the rough edges without sounding anemic or overly commercial. The Bo Diddley cameo on "You Got to Wait" brings a slow, swampy beat that unwinds leisurely over five minutes and defines the disc's unhurried, sometimes hypnotic vibe. Loomis's boyish tenor vocals, somewhat similar to those of Squeeze's Glenn Tilbrook, accentuates the pop element, especially on upbeat rockers like "Where We Started." The lyrics aren't especially enlightening, but they work adequately with songs that wonderfully capture his retro soul in a contemporary format. It's not flashy, but Loomis's savvy sense of restraint and sheer musicality show him to be a gifted auteur whose best work likely lies ahead of him. --Hal Horowitz

    Album Description

Hamilton Loomis is one of the young artists at the forefront of bringing blues into the 21st century and redefining it for a contemporary audience. Ain't Just Temporary is a tasty second helping of Hamilton's patented "blues outside the box," and features a killer duet with his friend and mentor Bo Diddley, who contributes his unmistakable voice and funky tremolo guitar to "You Got To Wait," a tune he and Hamilton co-wrote for the album. On his new release, Loomis masterfully blends his myriad influences (blues, Motown, Texas swing, soul), at once forging ahead into new musical territories while maintaining a strong connection to the blues legends (such as Diddley, Johnny Copeland, Gatemouth Brown, and Albert Collins) that took him under their wings at an early age.

5 out of 5 stars Honesty and Compassion Show Through.......2004-05-12

If you want a musician who exudes honesty and does a great job of capturing some of life's greatest struggles and pleasures in his music, John Gorka is the one to check out. I saw him live in Oshkosh in 2001. He put on a wonderful show and he is just a regular guy, no false pretenses...it's just John and his guitar. I wish more musicians were that way, unaffected and genuine. He had a great dialogue with the audience and he was truly enjoying himself. "Feel Like a Train" is the best track on the CD.

    5 out of 5 stars A Most Excellent Songsmith.......2000-09-28

Gorka is the poet of my heart and soul...he writes music that may not be the story of my life, yet tells my story implicitly. His rich baritone voice and beautiful guitar make his lyrics even more incredible. Gorka also has an incredible ability to tell a whole scene in a few words, using strong descriptions and subtler puns to round out the emotion of every song. Don't just buy this cd...go check out his others...

5 out of 5 stars So lyrical even my 2 year old loves it !.......2000-05-16

There is nothing like a child singing "grand larceny" to really take note of the power of Gorka's writing. There is a poetry and elegance to every line, even the hard luck tunes. I bought this when it came out and it has stayed within the family as you can see. A true classic.

    4 out of 5 stars Highlight in Gorka's Catalog.......1998-09-25

This is the first place I encountered Mr. Gorka.
I was immediately impressed with his tunefulness and thoughtfulness. "Temporary Road" is a record that makes me think: transporting me either to the scenes that he tellingly limns, or to reconsider ones from my own life. His rich voice proves a wise companion, leading through and around everyday life, revealling the magic of the mundane: a convict being freed (Vinnie Charles), a travelling musician pondering love (The Gypsy Life). His upbeat tunes are also powerful (Gravyland, All That Hammering) as they intelligently explore a world-weary cynic's greatest trial: daring to hope. Only one track (13) over-reaches. Otherwise, the album approaches perfection.

4 out of 5 stars The good days of deep elm.......2005-11-05

Quiet/Loud patterned melodic indie rock. Good stuff. Shelkett has a very distinct voice. It's sad that Cross my heart aren't around anymore. But to fill that void, check out Dead red sea and liars academy.

3 out of 5 stars just clicked purchase.......2005-10-08

I just kind of bought this Album on a wim. I listen to the samples on the Amason and though it was cathy. It has hints of bands like Knapsack, Hey Mercedies, and Jets to Brazil. It got some pretty up eat guitar riffs and some catchy beats.

    5 out of 5 stars great lyrics!.......2002-02-11

My friends brother let me borrow this CD. when i first listened to it i thought it was pretty good but after really listening to it, the lyrics really grew on me! it's great to listen to right before you go to sleep or whatever. it's just really good!

3 out of 5 stars This is some good Music.......2001-01-25

A really good cd. Not as good as thier first ep, but still good stuff. If anyone is intrested they have another ep on deep elm titled The Reason I Failed History. Supplies are limited

4 out of 5 stars It grows on you.......2000-09-23

This CD is head and shoulders over their debut EP. When you first listen to it, nothings sticks out in particular. Later, when you're at work, sitting in class, this hummable melody gets in your head and you aren't quite sure where it came from. A little later you listen to this again and bang! there it is, track 2, tonight we light ourselves on fire. The other songs do the same thing to you. Very good!
