    Album Description

Fully annotated two-fer featuring the only two solo albums released by Pappalardi. Felix Pappalardi started his career in the early 60s as arranger and producer for folk acts like Tim Hardin, The Youngbloods, Joan Baez and Fred Neil. In 1967 he was asked to produce Cream's classic album Disraeli Gears, co-writing 'Strange Brew' with Eric Clapton. In 1969, Pappalardi produced guitarist Leslie West's first album Mountain. Pappalardi and West then formed heavy rock group Mountain, who had a succession of gold-selling albums between 1970 and 1974. In 1976, Pappalardi recorded his first solo album with Japanese hard rock band Creation (who had supported Mountain). Don't Worry Ma was recorded in 1979 with top US session players Eric Gale, Chuck Rainey and Bernard Purdie. Edsel. 2006.

5 out of 5 stars Fine reissue of a classic set.......2006-05-24

Think about the stupidest, most formulaic Hollywood movies you can think of: cheesy action pictures, fluffy, unfunny comedies, big but stiff epics. Now imagine that one of the greatest living composers was working in Hollywood, turning out astonishing, hauntingly beautiful and stirring musical scores for these throwaway movies. That's what you get with this set: music Henry Purcell composed for some two dozen often utterly forgettable plays (trust me--I've read a number of them!) Occasionally, when he teams up with a playwright worthy of his stature, such as John Dryden, Aphra Behn, or William Congreve, the results are even better, but for the most part you can enjoy the music here without knowing anything about the original plays.

This set originally appeared as separate LPs in the 70s and 80s, and has been long out of print. That's a pity, since Purcell spent a good deal of his short professional life in the theatre, either writing the incidental music contained on these CDs, or the music for his larger works, the semi-operas (King Arthur, The Fairy Queen, and the like). Almost all of these works are enjoyable gems; certainly, they represent a pinnacle of English 17th century music. Purcell had a genius for spinning musical gold out of the most leaden lyrics (check out his Odes and Welcome Songs on Hyperion if you don't believe me), and he does the same with the song texts in these plays.

Hogwood and the AAM offer clean, listenable performances, and the sound on these old analog discs has been cleaned up and brightened--although they were pretty good, even in the late 70s. As with most Hogwood, emotional extremes are kept to a minimum, so the "otherworldly" nature of late 17th century music, so often emphasised in more recent Baroque performances, doesn't come across here. It would be interesting to see what a group like The King's Consort would do with this music, but this set fills the major gap in the Purcell canon quite nicely.

My only beef with the reissue, as with many reissues, is that the liner notes are rather thin for a 6-cd set--the lyrics to the songs, for example, are especially missed. Still, it's a worthwhile set, and a must for fans of Purcell, English Baroque music, or anyone who just wants to experience a taste of the last days of the Restoration stage.

5 out of 5 stars Amongst my most Favourite 'Axiom' Releases..........2004-02-20

An experimental 2 Disc Dub-derived journey, via the composition of Dub & downbeat artists "Sly & Robbie/Lee "Scratch" Perry/The Orb/Mad Professor/King Tubby". With exceptional contributions from "Jah Wobble/Bill Laswell/Nicky Skopelitis". Obviously those expecting a fusion of traditional reggae-tinged Dub, with the more World music fusion/Space Dub end of things are going to have a hell of a time listening to this, as the music balances precariously between the two styles of Dub, never fully committing to either....and yet managing to be more than the sum of it parts, with a uniquely cutting edge sound. In fact this album feels more concerned in presenting the listener with the many facets of Dub. Be it the Ambient Dub of "DJ Spooky's - Anansi Abstrakt" or the reggae Dub of "Dub Syndicate's - Gun Too Hot", a wide variety of Sub Genres of Dub are expertly explained here via music. But, the utter standout track with an album full of exceptional tracks has to be "Beta One/Assyrian Dub" is a 11 minute cosmic space Dub journey, with Bass guitar, and bongo drums mixed with what can only be described as reverberating synths twisting and turning the sound inside out, with a inescapable Asia sound. That is not only exceptional for it's compositions but for it's extremely well orchestrated instrumentals. And fleshes out an album that is arguably a far more substantial proposition than the popular "Buddha Bar" series of albums.

    5 out of 5 stars Goodness.......2002-11-28

A must for any fan of dub and electronica. It will fill your heart with niceness.

    3 out of 5 stars ........2001-06-04

Well, the good news is the cover. Its beautiful artwork. The music, however, leaves a bit to be desired. The sounds are just a little too far gone. Musically speaking, many of the tracks are dubbed into oblivion. There's little to hold on to, and most of the themes which are consistant, quickly become annoying and overly repetative. The collection does have some good tracks, but out of two CDs the stats are pretty poor. Its an interesting album, but not one to listen to more than a couple times. And definately not worth money.

4 out of 5 stars Filling aural space.......1998-05-08

Smooth, seamless bass rhythms lay the foundation for the ambient-reggae instrumental stylings of Bill Laswell and his ever-growing stable of musicians. Going beyond the Jamaican dub tradition, the musicians seem to push out from the speakers in an effort to fill the space with their presence. This is strong stuff.

        4 out of 5 stars Great soundtrack for a killing spree ; - )........2007-03-26

Malevolent Creation have gone through alot during this period when they released this album in 1998 there was a change lineup, infighting, censorship, attack from religious groups etc. but they still have managed to survive and make great music. They have unmatched sheer force and great songwriting ability and of course we have some great songs in here like Rictus surreal, Manic demise, the atmospheric title track that uses a synthesizer and Day of lamentation which is an accoustic and electic guitar ballad well its more like a doom metal song then theres Fracture with its spoken words done by Brett Hoffman and the aggresive opener To die is at hand. You could tell that they were trying something different with this album like an experimentation but the problem is with that it has low production values, the base is some times unlistenable and you could barely hear it however this is just a slight problem and does not ruin the overall experience, this is still a crushingly heavy and intense album with some hyperspeed riffs and intricate solos you name it this album has everything you want in a death metal album.

4 out of 5 stars Quite a Fine Art. .......2005-10-18

Malevolent Creation returned with Brett Hoffman once again on vocals. Once Jason had departed from bass and vocal duties, whom better then take over the voice of Malevolent Creation then the original front man with his unique growls and lyric style. Brett Hoffman has always been the true form of Malevolent Creation with Jason coming in at a second and honestly I don't care too much for Kyle's vocals (the current vocalist). Anyways, Malevolent Creation's revolving door policy continues to this day. Brett would only last for one more album, Envenomed; before finally getting kicked out of the band for good.

The Fine Art of Murder is rather experimental, there are two slow songs (the Title Track and Fracture), a Ballad with Death Metal vocals (Day of Lamination), plus there is this rather dry sounding distortion with the guitars. That may not be the best way to say it, but if you hear the songs, you'll know what I mean; there is a rather unique sound from the guitars. Some people complain about the strange keyboards on the title track, but I say, if in the end the effect works, then use it. The keyboards are not a major element to the song other then setting the tone or atmosphere at the beginning and end. Honestly I don't see why some people complain about it. Those are probably the people who don't care for the strange remixes found on Joe Black. As for the ballad that is acoustic half the time; Day of Lamination is a great song. I often imagine a demon sitting on a rock gazing down upon an earth with people have been laminated with plastic and blood in which he helped create and asking himself, "is this right?"

It's a great album, but there is one major problem. There are hardly any solos. Guitar solos can only be found on Bone Exposed, Purge. And Fracture. This is very strange for a death metal band. There are several excellent songs here like Manic Demise, Rictus Surreal, Day of Lamination, etc. that could have been perfected if they only threw in a memorable solo or two. This is what prevents me from giving this album the five star rating.

Well definitely a great death metal album from Malevolent Creation. They always seem to deliver something good no matter whom is in the band. Definitely something to check out as it is one of the few albums with Brett Hoffman that is still in print. Roadrunner Records better re-release and remaster The Ten commandments, Retribution and Stillborn one of these days. Well pick up a copy and sit back and enjoy, or crank it and headbang to the Malevolence.

        5 out of 5 stars PAINFULLY UNDERRATED.......2005-03-21

as the title says, this album is painfully underrated. a lot of people ignore it or forget it when they think of brett hoffman's work with MC, but it's in my top 3 favorite malevolent creation albums. the drumming (Dave Culross) is amazing and the guitar (Phil Fasciana, SUPRISE!) is brutal yet melodic and catchy. it's brett hoffman so you almost can never go wrong with that, and it's just a very very good album that everyone needs to hear.

5 out of 5 stars The Fine Art Of Murder And Malevolence.......2005-01-19

This is one of my favorite Malevolent Cretion albums in my collection. I bought it in late 1998. During this time, the band went through another line-up change. Jason Blachowicz is kicked out of the band and Brett Hoffman, Rob Berrett and Dave Calross are back in the fold. So things look good and it shows on this album because it delivers.

Now for my review. With this album, it is another new direction for the band. However, the production and sound do suffer a little because the drums are turned up a little bit higher but that doesn't at all take away any of the essential elements of the band. The power, heaviness, brutality, assault, aggression and intensity are still here and the instriments still destroy. There are also many great highlights throughout the album like keyboards on the titled track as well as a "sort of" ballad called Day Of Lamentation. This is very unusual song for the band. Don't worry, it's not a love song and the band is not going mainstream but it's a song is about regret. It features some accoustic parts and heavy parts but it's all Malevolent Creation. So all in all, it's a mandatory purchase for both Malevolent Creation and brutal death metal die-hards. Definitely worth picking up. Some of my favorite songs here are To Die Is At Hand, Dissect The Eradicated, Mass Graves, The Fine Art Of Murder, Fracture, Rictus Surreal, Day Of Lamentation and Scattered Flesh. Buy this album and experience the fine art of murder. You'll enjoy it.

        5 out of 5 stars A Great Album!.......2001-01-03

Hard not to like a grindcore-y metal band who named themselves out of one of my own bowel movements. And,hey! The lyric "smell the death, inhale the pain" is something anyone who ever used a public restroom understands.Malevont Creation writes songs for us all.
