Where's the Blues? Not here..........2007-05-17
Looking for authentic blues? You'll need to dig deeper than this guy is capable of delivering. For the real deal, try Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Robert Johnson, Buddy Guy, John Lee Hooker, Stevie Ray Vaughan, BB King, Lightnin' Hopkins, Albert King, Jimmy Reed, Paul Butterfield's early years, Clapton, and more... save your money and skip the Elvin Bishop. He's the Jimmy Buffet of blues or whatever.
The Best Elvin Bishop Anthology Ever.......2007-05-02
This CD is the best anthology of Elvin Bishop's 70s heyday ever compiled. It features both his bluesier side, as is evident on "Travellin' Shoes", and his more pop-oriented hits such as "Fooled Around And Fell In Love." If you get this one, along with Bishop's CDs on Alligator and Blind Pig and his work with Paul Butterfield, you'll have all the Elvin Bishop you really need.
THIS IS ONE OF ELVIN BISHOP'S GREAT COMPILATIONS EVER........2007-03-27
I will be writing a review on the legendary compilation album entitled "THE BEST OF ELVIN BISHOP" in the 20th Century Masters--The Millennium Collection by one of Rock's greatest artists. I give you MR. ELVIN BISHOP. "THE BEST OF ELVIN BISHOP" was originally released in 2002 on Compact Disc on the Mercury Records label in association with The Island Def Jam Music Corp. which is distributed by Universal Music and Video Distribution Corp. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary compilation album or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the best informative and most accurate review possible.
ELVIN BISHOP will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history and be remembered for being in the legendary 60's band THE PAUL BUTTERFIELD BLUES BAND. His musical combination of Blues, Southern Rock and Rock n' Roll would rank him with such legendary contemporary bands such as THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND, LYNYRD SKYNYRD, THE CHARLIE DANIELS BAND and THE MARSHALL TUCKER BAND. But it would be BISHOP'S solo career that would resurrect him to heights unimaginable. BISHOP would record some of his greatest hits in the 70's and contribute one of the greatest Rock anthems of all-time. This compilation album is the result of some of BISHOP'S greatest hits of the 70's. In my opinion, "THE BEST OF ELVIN BISHOP" is a true testament of the genius and musical creativitry of a rare unique individual and a fine fitting tribute to an artist that was indeed, far ahead of his time.
It is now time to let BISHOP'S music speak for itself and do all of the talking. This legendary compilation album begins with the positive and encouraging Southern Rocker "Let It Flow," the incredible sounding Southern Rocker "Ground Hog," the unbelievable bass filled Southern Rocker "Stealin' Watermelons," the blasting Southern Rocker "Travelin' Shoes," the fresh and soulful Blues Rocker "Juke Joint Jump," the fast and beautiful Blues Rocker "Sure Feels Good," the forever BISHOP trademark mild Rocker and one of the best Rock anthems of the 70's, the original long version of "Fooled Around And Fell In Love," the funkish Southern Rocker "Struttin' My Stuff," the humorous, fresh and funkish mellow Rocker "Sugar Dumplin'," the breathtaking live hard Southern Rocker "Rock My Soul" and the slow and beautiful mellow country Rocker "It's A Feelin'." May I also add that whoever anticipated that ELVIN BISHOP'S music from his solo career was going to sound like that of the music during his days as a member of THE PAUL BUTTERFIELD BLUES BAND are going to be extremely surprised. ELVIN BISHOP really came out on his own and played different styles of music totally different from the music of THE PAUL BUTTERFIELD BLUES BAND. I would also like to add that BISHOP'S blistering lead vocals as well as his guitar licks and riffs on this compilation album are taking his musical tastes and styles to another level. I really truly enjoyed this compilation album and I get the feeling that all of you will enjoy it too.
Overall, this is a great compilation album worth seeking further into and checking out especially if you are a diehard ELVIN BISHOP fan or a devout music collector. As for all of the newcomers or new beginners to the sound and music of ELVIN BISHOP, I would highly recommend this compilation album for you to buy and listen to. However, there are many other compilation albums by ELVIN BISHOP that you might want to research and look further into before purchasing the right one for you.
I would like to highly recommend purchasing this legendary compilation album to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. This compilation album will definitely prove to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER. This is one great compilation album that no music fan or devout music collector would want to be without.
In closing, ELVIN BISHOP has lead a very low profiled career especially since the death of his ex-wife and daughter in 2000. However, BISHOP has popped up out of the blue through the years and has toured with B.B. King and the late great John Lee Hooker. BISHOP has released new albums in the most recent years to highly critical acclaim rave reviews. After a long five year hiatus, BISHOP released a new album entitled "GETTIN' MY GROOVE BACK" on the Blind Pig Records label in 2005. I really truly hope that we haven't seen or heard the last of ELVIN BISHOP yet. I truly feel that BISHOP still has so much to contribute and accomplish in Rock n' Roll that it would be a shame for BISHOP to walk away from Rock n' Roll now at this stage of his career. In my opinion, ELVIN BISHOP has left his mark in Rock n' Roll history and will never be forgotten. So here's to you Elvin. Thanks for the great memories. Keep Persevering. Keep The Faith. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," am I wrong? Thanks for reading my review and I hope that you have enjoyed reading it as much as I have enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. ELVIN BISHOP RULES. Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever In Rock, John L.
Great overview!.......2005-07-31
If there's only on Elvin Bishop CD to have, it's this one and it cherry picks the best tracks (imo) Bishop recorded during his tenure at Phil Walden's Capicorn Records (1972-78).
Don't expect a re-hash of The Paul Butterfield Blues Band here. Elvin was into soul, chitlin rock and funk with the occasional ballad thrown in during this period, so forget the twelve-bar white boy blues.
Bishop was his own man and did what he wanted to do. Good for him and this CDs proof of that.
You Call This Blues?.......2003-09-17
I hate this CD. I recently bought this album after finding out that Elvin used to be a member of The Paul Butterfield Blues Band. I have been a big fan of The Paul Butterfield Blues Band for a long time. I thought that this CD would sound similar to the older Butterfield Blues Band albums, but I was very wrong. This CD sounds more like a mix between George Clinton and The Allman Brothers. The sounds that come from this CD are awful. There is no blues feeling in this CD at all. I would not advise anyone to ever buy this CD.

I fooled around and fell into depression.......2006-11-03
Yes that's how I feel about the lone Elvin Bishop song to make it into the top 40. I hated it with such a seething passion that I know I have to keep it clean here otherwise this won't get posted. The stupid key of "F", and that's the grade I give the song is the main reason I hate this song, but the lyrics tell me of something I could never do, and that's have alot of girls, and have them flock around me that way. I just never had that happen, and I doubt I ever will, but why would I want to? I remember one time I was in a crisis center, and everyone got to share their favorite fairy tales, and a few of the men claimed "The Three Bears", and they said it was because of choices where you can pick a girl, or for you women a guy, or whatever, and it would either be just right, or something else. That's a good way to do it, but "ONE AT A TIME......PLEASE!!!!!! I actually hate the guys who have more than one girlfriend hanging on them at one time because that leaves me out, and I'm trying to make time, but all it ends up with is a friendship, a stiff handshake, and nothing else. I know that anytime I hear this song I have to run the other way because of I know it would drive me to suicide. I know I have alot to live for, and this song would take it all away from me. I know everyone here would say if I let it, but the presence of this song is too strong as I have demons that I have to conquer. The things inside of me that make me feel like I'm not worthy to have love, and self-hating demons that just hold me down. This song will enter me, and just hold me back. I often wonder if Bishop's still alive? I know Mickey Thomas is, but I am not a big fan of his. I am not a big fan of Bishop's either. I had to censor the one scene of "Summer Of Sam" because it contained this song. I know when I used to practice guitar alot I tried to play it, to get away from it, and I used to have fantises of being in a band, and while the rest of the group played "Fooled Around" I would jump into playing Body Count's "Evil Rick" I had to clean it up otherwise this won't go public. I just feel it's wimpy too, and I guess it's a love song that guys can only appreciate, but let's face it whoever feels this is a love song just doesn't get it. The rest I don't even want to try.
They've butchered his songs.......2006-03-23
Garbage, don't buy. They've chopped up songs and spliced pieces together. For example Fooled Around is about 1/2 the length of the original, they cut the openning riff in half, removed an ENTIRE stanza (if you can believe it). I was very dissapointed. Keep shopping, but don't waste your money like I did.
I GOT RIPPED!!!.......2003-07-25
The Elvin Bishop CD I received was not even Elvin Bishop. This CD case was right and even the CD looked right, but when played, it was something I had never heard! I am VERY unhappy about this.
fooled around and fell in love.......2002-09-30
I would like to get the song lyrics of "fooled around and fell in love". Where can i get them?
Best of Elvin Bishop (Polygram).......2001-08-06
Elvin Bishop was, is and continues to be one of the best rock blues guitar players of our time. This CD contains some of his best and well known classics. For Elvin Bishop fans this CD is a must.

Customer Reviews:
good early solo Elvin collection.......2000-03-11
"Tulsa Shuffle" does a wonderful job of surveying Elvin's first three solo efforts after leaving the Paul Butterfield Blues Band. The guitar playing alone makes this a worthy collection, and Elvin's party till the cows come home attitude offsets the admittedly less than beautiful vocals Bishop contributes. Jo Baker's vocals are a marked improvement over Elvin's efforts and add considerably to the overall quality of this recording. For anyone who remembers this period of Elvin's recording career I strongly recommend this collection.
Early days of Elvin pay off big time.......1999-07-14
This collection of tracks from the first three records from Elvin and his band of merry men (and women) includes some great soul and blues. Also features the wonderful Stephen Miller on B-3 and vocals along with the late great Jo Baker on vocals - strong stuff.

Always out a sight.......2003-02-15
One of the best albums ever for partying. Once ya heard it yule want to play it again and again. Juke Joint Jump is great.
sure feels good feelin' good.......2001-02-23
What a nice complilation . This is feel good music to the max! I may be one of the few who would rather hear Elvin sing the songs himself rather than 'Fooled Around's" Mickey Thomas, but I can't quibble too much when a CD such as this provides so much fun. Elvin Bishop has coasted effortlessly through tough urban Chicago blues, the innovative experiments of The Butterfield Blues Band's "East-West",and the happy west coast soul n' funk music he was making in the early seventies. By 1973 Mr. Bishop had rediscovered his Oklahoma roots and preceded to put out some of the funkiest, and funniest, albums in his long and distinguished career. This excellent CD captures the best of Elvin's sly, hick, cool, Okie sugar bear persona better than any other compilation I've heard. If ya can"t find the vinyl ,then for gosh sakes get this CD and "Fool Around and Fall in Love", even if that ain't close to being the best song on the dadgum CD.And here's a P.S. Elvin's still out there playing the blues as cool and hip as ever. Dig those new albums too ya'll!
More than just the hit.......2000-04-30
Folks who only know him from "Fooled" need to discover one of the most underrated guitarists ever. "Travelin' Shoes" works as a perfect introduction to Elvin's Southern style.Enjoy!
Excellent survey of Elvin's best known period.......2000-03-20
"Sure Feels Good" surveys Elvin's six albums recorded for Capricorn records between 1974 and 1978. The material is not as bluesy as Elvin's earlier, immediate post-Paul Butterfield Blues Band recordings which are nicely anthologized on "Tulsa Shuffle." Rather, "Sure Feels Good" covers the more commercial period of Bishop's career and includes his only big hit, "Fooled Around and Fell In Love." Mickey Thomas, later of Jefferson Starship handled the vocals on the hit and on several other tracks on this anthology. This is a marked improvement over Elvin's vocal efforts, but there is a tradeoff. Elvin's earlier efforts, with vocals split between himself and Jo Baker, had a more earthen feel, while his Capricorn recordings are more polished and may appear overproduced in comparison. However, for fans of blues guitar and down home partying, one can hardly go wrong with this anthology. Together, "Sure Feels Good" and "Tulsa Shuffle" will amply anthologize Bishop's career for all but the most hard-core fans.
