A treat for lovers of West-Coast Sunshine Pop.......2006-06-22
First, I'm astounded that the previous two reviewers could get so much so wrong (perhaps they were written by the same person?) The first reviewer had apparently never heard of The Cyrkle before hearing this record, so I'll take his opinion with a grain of salt. He inexplicably criticizes the record for being "light", and not Psychedelic enough. That's like accusing The Carpenters of not being Psychedelic enough--they never were, so why expect them to be? The Cyrkle were, in fact, one of the best American pop groups of the second-half of the '60s, and are still inexplicably under-rated. Far from being Beatles-wannabes like so many other American bands of the time, The Cyrkle crafted a uniquely American sound, somewhere in-between The Beach Boys and Simon & Garfunkel. The second reviewer accuses Don Danneman's voice of being nasal. I wonder how he feels about Brian Wilson's voice? Danneman's was no more nasal than that classic voice.
I think that preconceptions and misconceptions are to blame with the low scores given this disk. But they're forgetting that this is neither a collection of singles, nor is it a rock opera; it's a SOUNDTRACK, and one for a sleazy, low-budget film, at that. The Cyrkle actually did a remarkable job with what meager resources they were given, and some of the cuts really shine. The title track (vocal version) is worthy of Gary McFarland's "Summer Samba", and a couple of the instrumentals evoke Van Dyke Parks in their scope and feel. "Murray the Why" is not only a bitingly clever send-up of legendary DJ "Murray the K", it's also musically the equal of "Today!"-era Brian Wilson. And "It's a Lovely Game, Louise" is simply lovely, and reminds me of Simon & Garfunkel's "So Long, Frank Lloyd Wright". Yes, the instrumental version of the title cut does sound a bit like Herb Alpert & the TJB; not necessarily a bad thing. But some of the other instrumentals sound like they could've been outtakes from Lalo Schifrin's classic soundtracks of the time (such as "Bullitt"). Sure, there are a few uneven tracks, but that shouldn't damn the record any more than it should for the weaknesses in Brian Wilson's "Smile" or in The United States of America's great, eponymous album. And there are many unexpected touches here--the use of novel guitar effects, close harmonies, tricky rhythms and other sophisticated elements.
For those who appreciate bands like The Left Banke, The Strawberry Alarm Clock, The Free Design, Messers McFarland and Parks, and Italian and French library and soundtrack music of the '60s, this record is sure to reward. And by all means, pick up the two recent compilations of The Cyrkle's radio-oriented music; they're undiscovered gems.
It's a mediocre disk, Louise.......2005-08-30
James Baker said it all. But lemme say a few more things. MURRAY THE Y is a harmony-intensive track that's semi-enjoyable. The instrumental version of THE MINX is a Herb Alpert soundalike track. My favorite track is IT'S A LOVELY GAME, LOUISE. Which begins with those sweet 7th guitar chords. But the chords sound slightly out of tune. Which creates a weird poignancy. NICOLE is an expendable exercise in porno-raga, wherein Don Danneman's voice is nerdy-nasal to a sadistic extent.
Novelty soft-psychedelia sixties rock.......2004-05-17
I was made aware of this disc by an article in the English music mag Mojo about standout sixties soft rock obscurities. The Cyrkle, apparently, were a mid sixties outfit that opened for, and were a favorite of, the Beatles circa 1966. This was touted as the final and "lost" Cyrkle album, a soundtrack to a skin flick that sunk quickly into obscurity. I bit, expecting a goldmine of tuneful gems. The tracks do certainly have a unique late sixties pyschedelic feel, yet they are so lite they border on elevator music. The exceptions are "Squeeze Play", a nice little jingle doused with sixities technocolor, and "The Rigging", a great (...) instrumental break.
The rest is forgettable and borderline annoying. The pictues from the film, however, found inside the CD booklet, are quite erm..titilating.

You little minx.......2005-01-14
This has to be one of the best albums of all time. every song is super catchy. you will have to get used to frankie stubbs vocals but the songs are so great it doesnt matter. The only bands i can compare this band to is probably jawbreaker and Husker du. not many bands can reach this level of greatness over and over again like this band.
WORTHY FOLLOW UP TO MUSH.......2004-04-21
This is the follow up album to Mush, one of the all time great punk albums. Imagine Motorhead and Husker Du making babies and you might be close to the sound of Leatherface. Catchy as hell, every song is a winner. The only way it pales next to Mush is in the vocals. On Mush, Frankie's vocals were harsh yet melodic; here, in the space of a year, due to touring, age, or who knows what,he barely rises above a garbled whisper. Don't let that deter you, however; if you are tired of Sesame Street punk and want an old school lesson, you can't go wrong with Minx.

It features the hits `Don't Fall In Love (I Said)', `Sympathy' and a cover of Alice Cooper's `School's Out'. Also included are five bonus tracks all appearing on CD for the first time. A very spotty, transitional album - though with a few gems.......2006-08-27
'Minx' is often criticized for not being a great album. Well, in truth it's not stunning. It's very overproduced and distinctly dated in the 80's, which Toyah even acknowledges in the liner notes. 'Minx' came after Toyah split with indie label Safari records, as well as with her long time songwriting partner Joel Bogen. His loss is apparent on this album, and most that would follow. He was a crucial element of the "Toyah" sound that became famous in the early 80's, though without him to write the music, Toyah was left to rely on a batch of hired hands through her new major record label, CBS/Portrait. The results are quite mixed.
The first single offering was "Don't fall in love (I said)", and was a great and upbeat pop song, though far removed from some of the darker imagery that long time Toyah fans held in high regard. It had a modest chart placing, and it looked as if Toyah could reclaim some of the chart placings she once had in her heyday.
Unfortunately, the follow up single was the absolutely terrible "Soul Passing Through Soul". It contained some of the blandest lyrics Toyah ever sang, and annoying middle-of-the-road music that did not resonate with fans. Though it only had a brief, low chart placing, I was surprised it charted at all. It did have a great, higher budget video but it was wasted on the song selection.
The final single was the slightly better "World in Action", though by this time the public response was in, and the single failed to chart at all.
Some great material did exist on the album. "I'll serve you well" is a classic Toyah song with great music and lyrics that would have fit on any earlier Toyah release.
"Soldier of Fortune" is also a really good song, though very overproduced.
"All in a rage" had great music, though the subject matter is a downer, and the song closes with way too many repetitions of "too many people"
The cover of Alice Cooper's "School's Out" has grown on me in a novelty way. It's great 80's fun.
The most cornball song Toyah has ever recorded is the pain and misery of "Over 21". Though she didn't write it, she did sing it so she gets thumbs down for that.
The bonus material is essential. The single B side "Snow Covers The Kiss" is a fan favorite, and far better than most of what appeared on the album. It's classic Toyah all the way.
"Kiss the devil" is one of those loud, overproduced songs, though it's still fun and enjoyable.
The remixes are decent variation on the original songs, and nice additions for completists.
The booklet is a top notch job. There are great sleeve notes and song lyrics, as well as single sleeves and period photos.
The CD was taken entirely from the original studio master tapes, with the exception of the "World In Action (Action Remix)". This is a vinyl transfer, though fairly well done. I could barely tell so the mastering tech gets credit for that. A very high quality product.
Toyah's big label debut did have a modest chart placing, but her time with CBS was limited to this one release. While the album does have some good material, it's clear there was too much outside influence on the final results. It was too glossy for Toyah's usually rough edge.
The original CD of 'Minx' was out of print before the 80's ended, making it a very rare title indeed. It occasionally commanded well into the triple digits.

Leatherface unearthed........2003-07-24
Take it for what it is, a good British punk cd from a band with really moving lyrics. I was lucky enough to find this in the local record shop so bought it staight away it was with mush aswell but i chose this one in a knee jerk reaction kinda way. Leatherface dont come off as a very good band from the first track on this cd but it soon gets going and really grows on you, any punk should be a fan of this apart from maybe the new wave punks. The main enjoyment factor of this is the track skin deep and the lyrics throughout it goes to show really that even if you arent a punk fan you cant mock the amount of bands out there who come out with these emotive lyrics take Blake Scwarch or Joey Cape for example so it's also good to hear these lyrics coming from a British punk band. Anyway enough of me rambling just buy the cd or horsebox thats also good.
