What music is all about.......2007-02-14
A classically trained musician, Garth Hudson brought his formidable musical skills and creativity to the world of rock as The Band's keyboard virtuoso, wind player, and arranger. In Live At The Wolf, Garth, on acoustic piano, and his wife, Maud, on voice, show how dazzlingly far beyond that earlier music their horizons now extend. Garth has said that his recent keyboard playing is better than any he did as a Band member. His improvisations, showcased here in three original piano pieces and his elegant song accompaniments, seamlessly combine jazz, roots, blues, and classical elements. In "International Medley," Garth adds patriotic tunes to this mix, and in "Concert Hora," he enriches his palette still further by performing a klezmer-like, Romanian folk dance melody on accordion. Amid all these diverse influences, one also senses in Garth's playing rock's sublime essence. Maud Hudson is a singer of flair, passion and wit, who beautifully synchronizes her rich and expressive voice with her husband's most ethereal phrasings. Together, the Hudsons have fashioned a new musical language that incorporates, yet stands apart from, all of the styles they explore.
Garth and Maud use this new language to make each of the album's song selections uniquely their own, from the early gospel "Stand By Me," to the sorrowful jazz standard "Willow Weep For Me," to the rock and roll classic, "Young Blood." They transform the lament for lost love "It Makes No Difference" into a heartfelt ode of remembrance for The Band's Rick Danko, the song's original vocalist. On Garth's impressionistic "Beyond the Breakers" (words by Eric Andersen), they wonderfully blend word and tone images of wind, water, color, and light. "The Weight" attains a sacred dimension when Garth prefaces this Band favorite with a 16th century hymn. Maud's excellent blues original, "You'll Be Thinkin'," packs buoyancy and verve. Her performance of Bob Dylan's "Blind Willie McTell" is stunning, as she speaks, sings, and whispers its words to summon ghosts of Southern slavery. Shining throughout every song are Garth and Maud's consummate artistry, gentleness of spirit, and love of music.
Live At the Wolf commemorates two significant dates. The September 2002 concert that it records was the first at London, Ontario's new Wolf Performance Hall, and also marks the beginning of the Hudsons' career as a performing duo. The CD's 2005 release celebrates Garth and Maud's 25th wedding anniversary.
This album is delightful and inexhaustible. You will never get tired of listening to it. In its understated way, it makes musical history.

Customer Reviews:
Brilliant, insightful, profound.......2006-05-04
I have listened to this recording many, many times, and never do I tire of it. I find it a very intelligent and moving collection of compositions. One that is timeless, and mingles with a select company of music from the genius of great classical composers. The album is a perfect blend of tradition with contemporary flair. The only better listen of this music could be experienced live, which I admit; I have had the great pleasure of hearing at a concert given at Nemacolin Woodlands. I expect a plethora of brilliant music created by this young man in coming years, and so I should.
from Solo Piano Publications.......2005-03-31
Jace Vek's second release is a stunning collection of fully orchestrated original compositions with Vek at the piano in concert with the Royal Sylvan Philharmonic Orchestra. Several of the nine tracks are orchestrated versions of piano solos from Vek's debut release, "Vision," which was one of my "Top 10" favorites for 2001. As good as "Vision" was and is, "Live" shows a remarkable amount of artistic growth and maturity. The orchestrations are full and passionate, and bring out Vek's virtuosity on the piano rather than drowning him out. This is one of the rare CDs that I can listen to over and over and still think, "Wow!" At 32, I'm sure Jace Vek is on his way to a bright and illustrious career!
The CD opens with "The Last Sunrise," a lovely, almost ambient composition with shifting time signatures and a piano line that seems to float above the fluid strings. The piece builds in grandeur as more of the orchestra comes in, bringing it to a climax, and then it drifts off as gently as it began. "Sarabande Rhapsody" is pure joy. Based on Handel's "Sarabande," one of my favorite classical teaching pieces, these variations are true to the original work, but update it. I'm sure Handel is smiling from his heaven! A very "big" arrangement, it is obvious that the orchestra members are having a lot of fun with the give and take between themselves and Vek at the piano. Bravo! "Circa 1990" begins with a swirling piano solo that repeats itself a few times within the piece while the orchestra (mostly oboe and strings) weaves a beautiful counterpoint. "Gate C-61 and Romance" are two separate tracks that melt into each other. Powerful and yet soothing, the richness of these pieces is a thrill. "Lorilei" is a gorgeous composition with cinematic qualities. The passion and interplay between the piano and orchestra clearly show why synthesizer will never replace "real" instruments or the musicians behind them. "Brooke's Lullaby" is a very sweet piece that sparkles in its simple, heartfelt love. "Jennifer's Largo" is lighter and dreamier, with a wistful sort of melancholy. "Thadet Variations" is perhaps Vek's most ambitious work to date. It also appeared on "Vision" as three separate tracks. Inspired by lying in the grass one evening and looking up at the sky, "thadet" is a Finnish word meaning "sky full of stars." Coming from a profound musical moment in Vek's life, the piece is about being immersed in and open to the vastness of the celestial universe. A musical marvel, the piece clearly demonstrates Vek's range as a pianist and composer, going from a light and tinkling sparkle in the upper registers of the piano to thunderous octave runs, from a soft gentleness to full-on bravado and everything in between.
Jace Vek has outdone himself with this new release! It is contemporary piano with full symphonic treatment at its best. Very highly recommended!

Customer Reviews:
5 star performance...4 star and then 3 star sound quality.......2001-05-28
This two disc CD will be enjoyed by every fan of Rick Wakeman. Wakeman talks quite a lot in between each musical selection and he is actually a very articulate and even funny person. He talks a lot about his religious beliefs, getting old and needing glasses, his mother passing away and other topics. Without the talking, the music possibly would have fit on one disk but, it's nice to hear him describe his life and experiences and, of course, give his usual great performances. The CD title "The Piano Tour Live" is a little strange, since this is not a totally solo piano album. It should have been called, "The Keyboards Tour Live". That doesn't take away from the enjoyment of the album, though I was surprised to hear it the first time. The thing that is hard to understand is the uneven sound quality of this album. Disc one's sound quality is very good, with nice versions of "Space Oddity/Life on Mars", "And You and I", "A Glimpse of Heaven" and others. The first selection is a 12 second song, and is the first song Wakeman learned to play as a boy called "Buy A Broom" which he segues into "Elgin Mansions". On disc two, the sound quality lessens noticeably, especially on the beautiful song "Gone But Not Forgotten" that Wakeman plays after speaking of his mother passing away. It's a beautiful performance of a pretty song with a surprising amount of hiss. With all the great sound equipment available today, it's hard to figure out why a performer as great as Rick Wakeman would have a poorly recorded album. Disc two also includes "Morning Has Broken" and a funny story before it on how Wakeman didn't receive the credit, nor his payment, for the piano introduction he did while a session player on Cat Stevens' version. Also on disc two is a great piece called "The Nursery Rhyme Concerto" in which he plays a string of nursery rhyme songs played in the style of famous classical composers. The album is typical Wakeman... it's great and the sound quality on disc two is not bad enough to spoil the enjoyment of the music. If you are a fan of Rick Wakeman's music, you will definately love this album.
