I'm a huge Girl Talk fan and own everything he has put out. This record is my favorite. It is glitchier than Night Ripper and far poppier than Secret Diary. If you like Night Ripper, it is a pretty safe bet you will like this.

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

There's already a couple of well-written reviews here and there's not a lot I can add, except to say that this album is special to me and it's always one you can come back to whenever you feel you feel you're losing your faith in music to make you FEEL something. It's not quite perfect, but it's not far short. And when it peaks with About You, Sparky's Dream and Don't Look Back, it's simply gorgeous. It's an album that has enough power to define certain times and places when you listened to it. It reminds me most of walking across the small island where I live in Hong Kong a couple of years ago: a warm, sunny Sunday morning, sea all around, other islands dotted around in the South China Sea, on my way to meet some friends. When music can preserve a moment in time, it's priceless. This is priceless. It's beautiful.

I was first turned on to these guys when I was in middle school (over 10 years ago) and I love them as much today. This is by far their best album for listen ability throughout. I love 'Bandwagonesque' as well, but there are a few throwaways on that album. This is easy-listening rock at it's best. I recommend this album if you know anything about rock.

This album is great. From beginning to end. If you don't know now you know. Listen to all the other great reviews for more confirmation! It's great mix of music you recognize, and songs that will have you listening to more. If you don't own a Teenage Fanclub album, this should be your first. You'll be going back for more. While other albums may be hits and misses. This one is a deff. HIT!

This is a fantastic album. The fact that 5 star reviews are still being submitted over 10 years after its release (and they're not the beatles or u2 or anything) should speak volumes. I have played this CD countless times over the years and I am amazed that I am not sick of it. I am a pretty constant consumer of new music. Get this CD - you won't regret it! (PS I've never done an Amazon review before, but the fact that this has had only 22 motivated me). It is melodic, catchy, uplifting and cheeky - in short, a little piece of musical bliss.

Any band coming out of Detroit right now still gets the garage rock comparisons. Leave that thought at the door because The Singles hail from Detroit but only share some qualities with those other bands like their liveliness and tight musicianship. The Singles are a straight up power pop band that have a very modern Kinks sound. Start Again is The Singles sophomore release and it expands on the retro sound found on their debut Better Than Before [2003], while still retaining the heart of the band and never leaving that core sound. What does stand out is that Start Again turns up the amps a bit more with heavier rockers like "I Want You Back Now" and "Hypnotized" that sound great blaring at high volumes. The album also has better transitions that flow seamlessly track to track and balance the harder charging songs with perfect timeless 2 minute Buddy Hollyish nuggets such as "Cryin' Over You". If you have not checked out The Singles, I would recommend you pick up both Start Again and Better Than Before because they are a breath of fresh air that really do a great job of repackaging a sixties sound for a new generation. Trust me you will be entertained!

This is, simply, one of Jon Hassell's GREAT albums! Totally unique...ultra sophisticated...deeply primitive...complex in the way that usually only Classical music is. In fact, when this first came out on vinyl...that's where I had to go to find it! Yes, the Classical section at my local Tower Records! Of course, back then, no one seemed quite clear just where Hassell belonged...rock, jazz, new age, classical, world??? Probably ALL of these are true, but it did make locating his latest album difficult at times. And this illustrates the remarkable combination of sounds and rhythms that all of Hassell's work contains. To over-simplify, take those raw African or Malay drums and pair them with *the* most digitally-altered trumpet textures you will probably ever hear. Now, take that and add a live performance group where every member is equally intelligent and unique. That's what you have on this CD. The composition works perfectly. And it *really* is different *every* time you hear it. Truly GREAT music. Don't miss this one.

He does seem to be receiving messages from the ether here and laying them out for the audience ...

In its time quite an original and outstanding album. Nowadays, music like this ("Ambient") has become a formula and disseminated by countless artists ... still, perhaps Hassell's original conception here can still move a new listener. You'll have to tell me. The first track is particularly "accessible" as it contains a repeating bassline which is quite nice.

Rich, lovely, and fiercly original music that tells stories of vaguely familiar worlds, but from such a skewed perspective that one often finally discovers wonderful things that have always been there, but to that point, unseen. And Hassel's generous expression of these things reveals beauty that often wouldn't be recognized as such. My good friend calls the music "broken" (not as a compliment). And it is in a way a celebration of the beauty of many things; some of which are, in fact, broken.

seems mellow peaceful and contemplative as if he realizes there is pain in the world and wishes to play to you a song that does not forget that people are hurting or that he can find beauty in the world i think that if you like listening to the cars go by at night in a light rain or like to sit by the ocean and listen to the surf with the stars above and the lights of a distant city on the horizon that you might like this, if you are reading this jon, thank you for your work.

3 out of 5 stars Philadephia Brass BAD. New England Brass GOOD........2004-01-17

This CD is a combination of two recording sessions. The 1966 recording of the Philadelphia Brass rates maybe two stars. Not only does the recording itself have a dry, studio sound to it, but the performance of the Philadelphia Brass cannot be recommended. They stomp their way through the loud parts; and the expressive parts are done in a perfunctory manner. It all has a real mechanical, connect-the-dots feel to it. There is a significant amount of imprecision in the attacks. Without checking the original scores I can't say for sure, but I'm thinking that some pieces were transposed into more comfortable keys.

The 1962 recording of the New England Brass is vastly superior. It's a good recording technically (considering the year -- certainly better than the 1966 recording) and a good performance that I'll rate four stars; so the whole CD averages out to three stars. The New England Brass deliver elegant high notes, spirit, and artistic expressiveness that are missing in the Philadelphia boys. This might explain why they are featured second on the CD: Save the best for last! If you are a real stickler for accuracy in Historically Informed Performance (based on whatever definition happens to be in style these days), you might find a few things to criticize. But hey! This was 1962. Cut 'em a little slack and enjoy the show.

Since this is a budget price, I would suggest you look at it this way: You're paying a budget price, so you can ignore in good economic conscience the mediocre part of the CD done by the Philadelphia group and enjoy the part done by the New England group without feeling like you wasted any money.

I bought this CD for track 13. Providebam Dominum by Lassus, and, while that track is a bit of a letdown, the rest of the CD is superb.

This CD offers a range of brass music composed in the Renaissance and Baroque periods. The performance is very clean as far as intonation as well as phrasing and dynamics.

This is a remastering of a 1960's performance, although you can't tell that just by lsitening, as it is free from noise, pops, and hiss. The liner notes weren't updated since the original recording (they attribute the Trumpet Tune to Purcell and not Clark, as it has been discovered recently), but that's not much of a concern, as the recording pretty much speaks for itself.

I was very happy to find a brass recording of Providebam Dominum, but I was a little disappointed by the recording on this CD. Overall, the song is played beautifully and gracefully. However, toward the end of the song there are accented notes that I feel are unnecessarily harsh. The three or four blatted notes in this track is the only blemish on this otherwise great CD.

The rest of the tracks, however, are played very nicely and without any unusually harsh notes. The Purcell/Clark Trumpet Tunes are played especially well, and the addition of the organ for a few tracks is a nice touch.

All in all, this is a great CD, and worthy of any brass music collection. It's not as refined or stylistic as some of the Canadian Brass recordings, but it offers a great deal to the early brass music enthusiast.

Brilliant is a good word for this set of must have band classics, all of these songs are as american as apple pie. Its a must have for any true patriot or band lover. Sousa is the Motzart of the marchign band world and truly this capture so much more than any other collection.

This is a really good representation of 20th century hymn tunes sung by a typical British Choir made up of boy sopranos, male altos and the usual number of tenors and basses. The choir sings very well using good diction and appropriate interpretation. The arrangements are varied, different groups of voices singing parts of a hymn usually alternating and eventually the full choir joins in; nothing unusual in the arrangements themselves. There is a nice variety of hymns, some more interesting than others. I will comment on a few of them as follows:
The opening hymn:'Christ, triumphant, ever reigning' is a good opener in that it is quick and begins with the boy sopranos and immediately gets your attention. John Barnard's majestic 'Guiting Power' tune sweeps the words up in a wide-ranging,flowing melody that creates from them a fine hymn.
'I, the Lord of sea and sky(Here I am, Lord) is a truly striking hymn! The words of this song begin with a proclamation in the verses; this is answered in the refrain by the singer's commitment to service. This is reflected in the tune. The melody for the verses has a vigorous movement to proclaim the work of God in creation, His continuing love for that creation,and His call for service. Both the words and music are by the American Jesuit musician Daniel L. Schutte, who has served both on college campuses and in parish ministry.
'All My Hope On God Is Founded' the tune of which is written by Herbert Howells and is called 'Michael'in memory of his son who died in childhood. It is a lovely melody and the words suit it very well.
The composer Ralph Vaughan Williams was the music editor of the 'English Hymnal'. The most widely used of his own tunes was the 'Monk's Gate' which he created from a folk tune. It is subtly contrived, as the rhythm of the alleluias shows. 'Sine nomine' simply means without a name.The resulting hymn is 'For All the Saints'.

The Wells Cathedral Choir under the direction of Malcolm Archer accompanied by Rupert Gough on the organ have produced an excellent disc.

After the Anglican Communion, particularly the American branch, has completed its transformation from a church to a political-social club, at least it will be remembered for two things: the beautiful and influential language of its Book of Common Prayer (1662) and its wonderful music. The English Hymn, volume 1, is a promising start to another English music series by Hyperion. This series complements Hyperion's English Anthems series, its Psalms at St. Paul's (many volumes of Anglican chant), and its two-CD collection of "Mags and Nuncs" (My Soul Doth Magnify the Lord and My Spirit Hath Rejoiced). Volume 1, "Christ Triumphant," features hymns written in the 20th century. The styles of the hymns range from confident, pre-Great War, "God is an Englishman" roof-raisers to insipid, happy-clappy jingles, which inadvertently, I assume, parallel the decline of the church. The Wells Cathedral Choir sings with gusto and, typical of Hyperion, the sound quality is excellent. My only disappointment came when the CD ended - is this all there is to the 20th century? I hope Hyperion plans to include more than one volume on the 20th century in this series. If you enjoy this type of music, you will be satisfied with this CD. If you have CDs from the other series listed above, the English Hymn, vol. 1, and a programmable, carousel-CD player, now you can click your heels and transport yourself to Evensong at King's College, Cambridge, or St. Paul's, London!

Hailing from Athens, Georgia, and often discussed in the same breath as psychedelic upstarts Olivia Tremor Control and Neutral Milk Hotel (since they all operate under the loose umbrella of the Elephant Six collective), Elf Power are an eccentric rock quartet that perform engaging, subtle music with a sonically subversive underbelly. With this 1999 release Elf Power have an interestingly detailed and certainly bold, albeit cloying record.

Most of the time, Andrew Rieger (vocals) is content to whimper in a syrupy, Jeff Buckley's-sickly-little-brother-with-asthma falsetto, though his voice would hold pitch better and soar beautifully if he'd breathe better and project more. I realise that he does this on purpose as a matter of aesthetics, but he sounds a bit like the Prince of Swamp Castle in Monty Python's Search for the Holy Grail.

The guitars tend to slip beneathe the drums and layers of atmosphere in places, and it detracts from the band's sonic profile. The melodies wander to and fro from sweetly catchy to grating, the latter of which is made worse by Rieger's aforementioned vocal tendencies. The keyboards tend to be a bit annoying and garishly stark. Certain moments conjure the impression of cheesy christmas themes.

It seems that every other song on ADIS is either interestingly catchy and fey (Will My Feet Still Carry Me Home, Jane, We Dream In Sound, the Well, Simon, O What A Beautiful Dream) or embarrasingly sappy and juvenile (High Atop the Silver Branches, Olde Tyme Wayes, Carnival, Noble Experiment, etc.) It's like a giddy Radiohead hosting a daytime children's show on public television in the late 1970's.

Elf Power is one of the best indie rock groups around. If you don't believe me, listen to this album, "Creatures" and "Walking With The Beggar Boys". The lyrics may not be very interesting in the long run (though they are indeed very catchy and memorable which helps if you wish to sing along), but boy is it entertaining! Every song on this album has great instrumentation and is extremely fun. Andrew Rieger's vocals are, once again, very soothing and dreamy (though it varies - "Creatures" is way more dreamy sounding than this one). Every person I've played these two albums for ended up has humming or singing the choruses right after. If you're a music collector or even just a fan of rock music do yourself a favor and buy this album.

No, it's not the kind of elf power that we saw in "Lord of the Rings," with the rings and the river and so on. It's one of those deliciously weird names that Elephant 6 bands frequently use. And in "A Dream in Sound," Elf Power magicks up a sweet, vaguely psychedelic batch of catchy pop tunes.

Expect to be hooked in by "Will My Feet Still Carry Me Home," a catchy, light little tune, because then it's off into the even catchier "High Atop The Silver Branches," a wistful yet bouncy melody, and the rollickingly staccato title track. This tendency peaks with "Simon (The Bird With The Candy Bar Head)," which is augmented by playful horns and birds twittering.

But don't expect Elf Power to be all brightness and fun. "Willowy Man" establishes a handful of aching, bittersweet ballads, like the melancholy "Jane." And "Carnival" is pure fun -- horns, sparkling twitters and fast drums establish a wonderful circus atmosphere, before dying out with a horn blat into the psychedelic-rocker "The Well."

Okay, who could resist checking out a band with a name like Elf Power? They don't measure up to sister band Neutral Milk Hotel, as few other Elephant 6 bands can. But taken alone, Elf Power is refreshingly fun, catchy, and has the talents of other Elephant 6 alums like Jeff Mangum to give it some extra flavor.

Their sound is more like Britpop, and less like the eerily strange creations of their sister bands. Instead of sounding surreal, they opt for catchiness. They start off with the obvious guitars and percussion, but also use lots of organs, horns, distortion and weird sound effects to make it sound just a little psychedelic.

Andrew Rieger's vocals are not stellar, but his airy lilts are somehow soothing, trying out the singsongy approach in "Will My Feet Still Carry Me Home," then murmuring in counterpoint to Laura Carter's even more lovely vocals. The songwriting isn't too amazing -- at one point, Rieger actually sings "tra la la!" -- but it's pleasant enough. "It took a thousand light years/for you to trip down into my eye..."

Elf Power has a power all its own. Don't compare it to its more highly-regarded siblings. Instead, appreciate it for its beautiful, catchy, and thoroughly addictive pop melodies in "A Dream in Sound."

I saw them live in New Orleans. They were awful. They opened for Wilco, what an embarassment for the Chicago natives. I lived in Athens just long enough to realize that this is the sort of poser music that only Athens can produce. I almost fell into the trap of thinking these guys were worth a crap until it dawned on me - this is the type of music that will get you beat up in school. // The tracks on this album are whiney boy pop rock, aspiring for something which I don't really seem to know...I don't think they do either - so, "hey! lets call it ART!!! They'll be sure to buy it then..." - Don't get caught wasting your money.

I am a slavish devotee to the Elephant 6 Collective, but I may have to rethink that after listening to this release of Elf Power's. Maybe I didn't give it the time it needed to grow on me, but I can honestly say this album grated on me more than any album I have listened to this year (and I listen to a lot). It was just too sparse. Most of the tracks seemed to lack a melodic center. And the words just bounced off of me. For my money, you would be much better off with Olivia Tremor Control, The Apples in Stereo, or Beulah. Even the Red King is to be preferred to this one.

I know people have rated this album off the charts, but I just have to say that it really does not do it for me. Let this be a voice of warning and/or dissent.
