Highlight versions of cast recordings are by definition a compromise, and this reduction of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera is no exception. Weighing in at 59 minutes, it's over 40 minutes shorter than the two-disc version, excising many musical scenes that convey the flow and impact of the show (which include, admittedly, a lot of patter and screaming). On the other hand, all the hits are here--"Think of Me," "Angel of Music," the title tune, "The Music of the Night," "All I Ask of You," "Masquerade," and "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again"--and Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman are still on hand to make their distinctive contributions to the original London cast. So if you're looking for a convenient, inexpensive single disc that will let you enjoy Lloyd Webber's scrumptious melodies without having to immerse yourself in the action, this just might be for you. --David Horiuchi

2 out of 5 stars Music of the Night????????.......2007-02-28

I really liked the idea of a highlights cd; however, The Music of the Night is not the same one that is on the original two-disc cd. The words aren't even the same. If you enjoy Music of the Night, skip this cd. Otherwise, this cd would be 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Great short version!.......2006-12-06

If you only want to hear the songs from this musical, this one is for you. But if you want the full version, get the 4-disc version. I listen to this version in my car when I'm on the road, but I listen to the 4-disc version at home. Both versions are worth the purchase.

5 out of 5 stars A long time favorite.......2006-08-26

This is one of my most treasured CDs. The voices of the cast are incredible! "Think of Me" and "All I Ask of You" are 2 of my favorites. If you enjoy the story behind Phantom, yu will like this soundtrack.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Recording of this Show Available.......2006-04-21

I think that this is the best PHANTOM soundtrack out there:

1)It has the original Broadway cast, the best.
2)It cuts out the more risqu? parts of the show (believe me, there are some), making it "appropriate for the whole family."
3)The entire CD is on one disc, so you can go through the show w/o switching discs.
4)The only song that the movie soundtrack has on it that this doesn't is "Learn to Be Lonely," which appears in the credits, and isn't really a great song anyways.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2006-03-14

I bought this CD as a birthday gift for my boyfriend. We had misplaced the one that we had and needed a new one. This is one of our favorite cd's. Such beautiful music.

The gentle hand of Emmylou Harris guides this tribute to ill-fated country-rock avatar Gram Parsons, which goes a long way toward explaining why this star-studded salute avoids the pitfalls that befall many such projects. Harris got her start harmonizing with the patron saint of alt country, contributing mightily to Parsons's two early 1970s solo albums and reviving selections from his small, but indispensable, oeuvre throughout her career. She has a vested interest in finding a true connection between her former benefactor and this cast of Parsons partisans. Here she bands together a flock of followers who range from obvious offspring (Wilco, Gillian Welch, Whiskeytown) to not-so-evident disciples (Beck, the Pretenders, Sheryl Crow). Parsons's partner in the Flying Burrito Brothers, Chris Hillman, teams with Steve Earle on "High Fashion Queen," and David Crosby (like Parsons and Hillman, an ex-Byrd) joins Lucinda Williams on "Return of the Grievous Angel." Harris harmonizes with Beck on "Sin City" and shares the mic with Crow on "Juanita," one of the collection's highlights. Ultimately, Harris has assembled a homage that would've pleased her old mentor. --Steven Stolder

4 out of 5 stars Classy tribute album made with love .......2007-06-05

The guiding hand of Emmylou Harris is in evidence on this fine tribute album to Gram Parsons ,an influential country rock icon who is held in awe by proponents of that genre .He left an indelible stamp on the genre ,from his first group of note ,The International Submarine Band through his stint with te Byrds ,and the Flying Burrito Brothers and culminating in his solo career .On both of his fine solo albums he duetted with the then relatively unknown Emmylou Harris who ,on relaunching her own solo career in 1973 used many of the musicians who played on the Parsons solo albums .She made no bones about the influence of Parsons on her own life and work and she is very much involved with this 1999 tribute album .She sings on 3 of its tracks and oversaw the project as Executive Producer

What does leap out of the album is the excellence of Parsons as a songwriter ,something often overlooked when people discuss his influence on music --the man left a legacy of good songs many of which are featured on this album
Two of the featured songs are from the Byrds period .Wilco despatch "One Hundred Years From Now "with some verve and panache ,although no great subtlety and there is a quite stunning version of "Hickory Wind "by Gillian West, one which captures the longing and melancholy with which the song is suffused .Its an album highlight .
The Burrito Brothers period is represented by a number of cuts .There is Sin City" done here in a duet between Harris and Beck which stands comparison with the seminal original ,but the same cannot be said of the version of Hot Burrito Number 1 by the Mavericks -its good but rather skates on the surface of the song .Emmylou returns ,duetting with the divine Sheryl Crow on Juanita ,whose key line "a bottle of wine and some pills on the shelf" seems to stand in some ways for the fatal problems in its author's hedonistic lifestyle
From the "Burrito de Luxe "album we get "High Fashion Queen" in a version by co-author Chris Hillman and Steve Earle which is good if not outstanding ,and also from the 1976 album " Sleepless Nights " we hear an Elvis Costello version of the title track .This benefits from a committd vocal and a deft arrangement making dexterous use of the vocalist's skills on piano ,vibraphone and celeste .

Then ,the solo albums .From "GP"there is a strong album opener ,She by The Pretenders and Emmylou Harris ,and the beautiful ,mournful A Song For You performed exquisitely by Whiskeytown .There are 4 songs from the second solo album "Grievous Angel",.Unfortunately one cut features current music's biggest waste of space and studio time the useless Cowboy Junkies whose anaemic crawl through Ooh Las Vegas is soporific beyond belief .However relief is at hand with the Julianna Hatfield -Evan Dando duet on $1000 Dollar Wedding (excellent) and the Lucinda Williams -David Crosby take on ,what for my money is Parson's finest song "Return of the Grievous Angel,
Completing the songs from the second solo album is In My Hour of Darkness performed by an alternative country "supergroup"=consisting of Buddy and Julie Miller,Jim Lauderdale and Mark Olsen (formerly of the Jayhawks)

I regret the lack of songs from the International Submarine Band era but overall this is a fine tribute to a key rock figure and one that should be in the collection of lovers of alternative country and country rock

5 out of 5 stars Treating the originals with respect.......2007-04-12

This album is very good cosmic country rock. The originals are classics, but this album respectfully covers them and even adds to some. This tribute has some outstanding tracks. Whiskeytown, and Ryan Adams, carry on the tradition of Gram more than anyone would imagine such a young, precocious, yet talented songwriter could do. Evan Dando and Juliana singing $1000 wedding is priceless! Buy it! It has been in heavy rotation for years.

5 out of 5 stars Lovingly Complete.......2007-02-23

You know an album is good when people disagree so vastly on the best part. For me, it was The Mavericks and Raul Malo's soulful tenor that got me (maybe because I've long felt they were the best band to two step to). My mother was taken by Ohh Las Vegas and had all kinds of questions about the Cowboy Junkies. The album filled the house and set the tone for a weekend (along with homemade biscuits). Highly recommended to anyone who likes soulful rock or country. Strangely, I found myself singing Willie, Waylon, & Me when we left the house. Hey.

5 out of 5 stars the American poetic justice award........2007-02-21

The Cowboy Junkies are so great on this, they manage to make `Ooh Las Vegas' sound good. Sometimes a song strikes me as not being very good musically. I did not like the original version of Warrens Zevon's song `Ain't That Pretty At All.' When I heard him do it live, it sounded better. Having a tribute for Gram Parsons is like taking Warren Zevon back to Paris with a whole gang of people who want to go to the Louvre Museum, get a good running start, and hurl themselves against the wall, because we would all rather feel bad than not feel anything at all. The big irony for me is that I never wrote a review for this CD before. I've had Emmylou Harris's version of five of these 13 songs since I bought her 1990 `Duets' CD, and I even have the 3-CD box set, `Emmylou Harris Portraits' (1996), which has five Gram Parsons songs plus the trio's version of an old hymn, `Farther Along,' which Gram Parsons probably sang with the Byrds on the `Sweetheart of the Rodeo' album. Only in 2006 did I make an effort to find out more about him and get most of his songs.

Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris jointly get credit for writing the song `In My Hour of Darkness,' which is nicely placed as the last song on this CD. It has three verses, with a tragedy about a young man and a deadly Denver bend in verse one, another young man safely strumming his silver-stringed guitar in verse two, and an old man, kind and wise with age in verse three. People ought to listen to this one like "He read me just like a book, and he never missed a page."

5 out of 5 stars Great Songs, Great Singers, Great Tribute.......2006-12-24

"Return of the Grievous Angel" is the only tribute album in my collection. It was a gift from my stepson, who knows that I like folk rock music, which Gram Parsons had a role in inventing. I wasn't that much aware of Parsons' music the first time around (he died of a drug overdose in 1974), but I just love this album, as Parsons' great songs are performed by a variety of talented singers, led by the wonderful Emmylou Harris, a friend and co-performer of Parsons back in the '70s. Her love and respect for Parsons shine through in the artists and arrangements she includes. Her own interpretation (backed by The Pretenders) of "She" starts the album (she returns with Sheryl Crow on duet of "Juanita"), followed by Cowboy Junkies "Ooh, Las Vegas", a drastic reinterpretation of Parsons' original, but true to the Junkies sometimes ethereal sound. Beck (with Harris) does "Sin City", now one of my favorite singalong songs--some day I'll work out what it's all about. My other favorites "Hot Burrito" by The Mavericks, Lucinda Williams'(backed by David Crosby) "Return of the Grievous Angel" (as noted elsewhere, it would fit perfectly on her outstanding "Car Wheels on a Gravel Road" CD), and Gillian Welch's "Hickory Wind", but every track is first rate. After I had this CD for awhile, I bought a GP collection. It might be sacrilegous, but I actually like the tribute CD better--the arrangements are tighter and the vocals are better.

A few years after The Phantom of the Opera debuted in London, Harold Prince unveiled Andrew Lloyd Webber's gothic musical in Canada, in 1989. It was so good that this recording of highlights from the Canadian cast is--dare we say it?--more enjoyable than the equivalent London cast highlights album. No, it doesn't have the authenticity of London principals Sarah Brightman (for whom then-husband Lloyd Webber wrote the role of Christine) and Michael Crawford, but it doesn't have their idiosyncrasies, either, and it does have the richer voices of Colm Wilkinson and Rebecca Caine (who played Jean Valjean and older Cosette, respectively, in the 1985 London cast of Les Misérables). At 69 minutes, the Canadian album is also 10 minutes longer than the London, allowing inclusion of the prologue and dress rehearsal for Hannibal. Of course, Lloyd Webber's melodies--"Angel of Music," "The Music of the Night," "All I Ask of You," "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again"--are scrumptious on any continent. --David Horiuchi

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Iffy.......2007-01-22

I've only listened to clips here and online, but I personally would not buy this entire album. Why? Well, I would LOVE to have Rebecca Caine's "Think of Me" and "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again" - she has a beautiful voice, much stronger than either Sarah Brightman or Emmy Rossum, and much better trained. But what I have heard of the Raoul annoys me. He's supposed to be the good guy, not a dork!

And Colm Wilkinson as the Phantom? Whose idea was that??? I really do not like his voice, even as Valjean in Les Miz. I highly doubt he's a strong enough singer to pull of "Music of the Night" the way Michael Crawford or Hugh Panaro (best Phantom EVER) can.

If, however, this was on iTunes, I'd jump at the chance to get Rebecca's songs!

4 out of 5 stars Rebecca Caine is what made me buy this album........2006-12-04

Rebecca Caine is my favorite Christine. I think that she has one of the most amazing voices, and I loved her in the title song.

As for everything else...
Honestly, Colm Wilkinson cannot sing. His voice is just too weak for the role. Like one of the reviewers before me said, he's no Michael Crawford, not even Gerard Butler. Maybe I should hear him sing in Les Miserables to appreciate his voice.
As for Byron Nease, he's okay, but I've easily heard better.

In all, the album's okay, but there are many better recordings.

4 out of 5 stars Very Nice!!!!.......2006-08-25

Although this is a specatcular Disc, I find it very hard to appreciate fully Colm Wilkinson's voice in the role of the Phantom after being so used to Michael Crawford's for that role (and being used to mr. Wilkinson's as Jean Valjean in Les Misérables). Don't get me wrong I very much like Colm wilkinson, but not so much as the phantom.
Apart from that Rebecca Caine is a stunning Christine!!!! And at times seems to me to be...dare I say.... better than (my personal favourite singer) sarah brightman, Ms. Caine's "Think Of Me" blew me away, it was very inspiring....

Overall the rest of the cast is very good as well and if you are a true "phan" this is a must have CD very much worth its price!!!!

4 out of 5 stars NOT AS GOOD AS THE LONDON CAST RECORDING.......2006-07-02

Today, after Phantom of the opera became the longest running musical in history of Broadway, and being one of the most produced of Andrew Lloyd Webber's work around the world, we can only agree with the statement of "The Times" reviewer which appeared on October 10, 1986, a day after the premiere in London, who wrote: "One thing is clear: Gaston Leroux's famous story is God's gift to the musical theatre. It wraps up the legends of Faust, Svengali, and Beauty and the Beast into a grand final death rattle of the romantic agony. It turns a theatre--the Paris Opera--into a replica of the universe, from the Statue of Apollo above the city's rooftops down to the infernal regions with their furnaces and stygian lake. And, musically, not only does it unfold to an accompaniment of the operatic repertoire, but also features a protagonist who is himself a great composer."

Phantom, with its operatic and lush melodies, intensive story and grandiose staging, remains one of the best and most beloved musicals of all time.

The musical is based on the Gaston Leroux's novel of the same title. It is set in the second part of the 19th century Paris and its famous opera house. The young soprano, Christine, is discovered as a talented young opera singer in the opera house. She is noticed by an old childhood friend, Raoul, and they fall in love. However, we find out that a third person, the mysterious Phantom, hiding behind a mask, is a musical genius who had been giving Christine singing lessons and who has developed a mad passion for his young pupil. He hides in the catacombs of the opera house, lurking on the outside world. He is determined to keep Christine for himself and the story evolves from here.

Apart from this interesting plot, the audiences were swept away by Lloyd Webber's tremendous score, which probably remains his best work. It combines the beautiful love songs and sweeping operetta-like arias, with numerous orchestral leads and crescendos. You can't help but being charmed by this beautiful and haunting score. The large numbers, especially, the last one, will probably move you deeply. The most popular numbers are "The phantom of the opera", a vibrating duet between Christine and the Phantom; "All I ask of you", a lovely love duet between Christine and Raul; Phantom's mesmerizing voice will hold you till the end in "The music of the night", Christine in "Wishing you are somehow here again" will evoke sadness, and many more.

One of the main reasons for the early success of this show and this recording was its original London cast. All of the three principals: Sarah Brightman as Christine, Michael Crawford as The Phantom and Steve Barton as Raoul gave the performances of their lives. Michael Crawford's take on the role of The Phantom became stuff legends are made of, due to his amazing vocalisation and the powerful, almost hypnotic attraction in his voice and performance, exactly how the Phantom is supposed to sound.

The lyrics by Richard Stilgoe and Christopher Hampton are the weakest link here, but they manage to convey the basic story.

After the show's success in London and on Broadway, the Canadian production was mounted and it premiered in Toronto's Pantages Theatre in September 1989. This CD captures the highlights of that production. All the important musical numbers are here, however, the problem is the cast, that is, some of them. Colm Wilkinson is a great singer, his interpretation of Jean Valjean being the best example. Unfortunately, he doesn't have what it takes to play the Phantom. His interpretation lacks the depth of Michael Crawford and he struggles to stretch his voice, especially on the high notes. Overall, he sings too deep for the role, sounding as if he is still in Les Miserables. Still, he is much better than the mediocre performance Gerard Butler gave in the 2004 movie version. Rebecca Caine is a fine Christine, her soprano has no problem of getting into the character. Byron Nease, who plays Raoul, also fails to deliver, sounding too old and squeaky. The unwritten rule of the musical theatre, that the miscasting can affect the best of materials, is regrettably evident here. There is also a minor problem with the orchestrations, since some parts have a faster tempo than in the original. The aficionados will notice small lyrical changes in comparison with the original cast recording.

The CD comes with a synopsis (a rear treat in the Andrew Lloyd Webber's cast recordings), the lyrics and production photos.

This recording works best as an addition to the existing Phantom collection. For the first time listeners, I highly recommend the 2-disc 1986 London Cast Recording. Not only does it feature almost the entire musical, but also the cast is much, much better, as well as the orchestrations, which have a more classical touch.

4 out of 5 stars I liked Colm Wilkinson better in Les Miz.......2006-05-12

Not to say that he doesn't do a good job in this role as well, but often times it just sounds like Jean Valjean singing the Phantom. He does have some great moments but I think the Christine is the best thing about this recording. I don't know why, but I find her voice incredibly sexy. It's easy to see why the Phantom would want to seduce her and foster her talent. Raoul's line (and vocal) delivery is a little too "Dudley Do Right" for my tastes. It sounds almost comical at times. I dunno, maybe that's what he was going for. The London Cast recording is probably still the gold standard simply because the actors have become so synonymous with the roles they played, but you should pick this one up if you want a more up-to-date version of the orchestrations and, subsequently, the libretto.

Soon as you put the CD on, you are transported to another time... another place. The music sooths, as the words spoken by the beast penetrate to the deepest part of your soul. You're emotionally spent, yet feel more alive than ever after your journey.

I bought this years ago when it first came out on Cassette (gives you an idea how long ago that was) I listened to it so many times the tape wore out. I just ordered the CD.... I can't wait for the journey to begin again...thank you Vincent!

5 out of 5 stars I Loved this Show and this Album.......2006-06-09

I bought the CD today as a backup in case my original signed by Ron Perlman CD wears out. I keep waiting for the owners of this series to release at least the first 2 season on DVD. I have no interest in owning the 3rd season when the show broke my heart. I wish someone would redo this show in it's original conception as a movie or a TV series. I loved the show and was a great fan of the Love and Hope shown by Catherine and Vincent.

5 out of 5 stars Of Love And Hope.......2006-04-07

Hi! I bought "Of Love & Hope" last November, through Amazon.com, and I must say, I enjoy it! However; the producers of this album, which I love, should have used another introduction instead of just the MUSIC. Why not use the main theme, where Vincent and Catherine introduce each other? THAT would have been great!! After all, Cathy was also a great character on the show!

I hereby recommend this album to all Beauty and the Beast fans out there. I have listened to it so often, that now, I can recite more poems by heart! BATB FOREVER!

5 out of 5 stars Lushly Romantic!.......2005-09-04

I was a great fan of the TV series, "Beauty and the Beast" and owned the cassette version of "Of Love and Hope" in which Ron Purlman as Vincent reads poetry by Shakespeare, Lord Byron, Shelly, Rilke and other greats, interspersed with beautiful music, mostly from the soundtrack of the series. As I love beautiful music and beautiful words, I counted this tape among my treasures. When the tape eventually became damaged, I truly was distraught. I am delighted to now own the CD, which brought me instant pleasure which can only continue for the rest of my life.

5 out of 5 stars Moves me to tears..........2005-07-06

I actually have this on cassette, bought years ago before television network executives butchered this incredibly beautiful show, and dug it out of storage recently. Interestingly enough, I found that I had forgotten none of it. Never has music spoken so eloquently to my heart, nor represented a television show so clearly and wonderfully. Ron Perlman's "Vincent" voice, interpreting the classical literary selections in this, is sensual, articulate, undeniably romantic. It's one of the most unusual collections of music and poetry I've ever come across, a fitting and fine representation of the show.
My favorite is the opening theme of the series, with lyrics sung and "Vincent's" "No one, not even the rain, has such small hands" intonation.
The television show and it's tragic, other-worldly love story was too perfect to last long on tv. I'm glad that fans such as myself have been able to hold onto rememberances of the show such as this marvelous, sweeping score. I only wish that it could be re-released on Cd, along with dvds of the series. Fans have been keeping the magic alive all these years; it's time we were recognized.

4 out of 5 stars Great, but no prize.......2002-03-31

The selections from the Ring trilogy, Friends in need and Fallen Angel were excellent, however, some of the special request such as joxer the mighty, seemed a little bit rushed. Wasn't that song on Volume 2 already? Where was M'Lila's song from Destiny, or the music played During the first Kiss in "The Quest"
The cd has its good points, personally "It's Over" from "THAB" with its haunting melodies portraying the consequences of war.

5 out of 5 stars Xena;Warrior Princess volume six.......2002-01-09

I am so happy that the last and final cd has come out, now my collection is complete. I am very sad for the show ending, but I am glad to still collect things.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection.......2001-12-25

Well, I have them all by now, but this last one is a great collection, with the added bonus of the music from A Friend In Need.
Just another fine addition to my Xena collection!

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional.......2001-11-30

I am a fanatic and devoted Xenite.I have a huge problem:i can't stop listening to that cd,since the first time i listened to it,which means 1 month! That cd is really exceptional and i think that every true and genuine Xenite should buy it!It's really good!I was moved when i heard the Fallen Angel part.I was passioned when i heard the Ring Trilogy!I was astonishing when i heard the bonus cues that were included, especially the cue from The Quill Is Mightier(fishin part),oh,i was completely satisfied!
Though, there is a complain:i can't understand, why after 6 cd's,the producers don't do a cd including cues like:M'laila's song, the cues from the Bacchaen festival, music from Deja Vou All Over Again, where in the end,Gabrielle says to Xena those wonderful words,or even the scene of the kiss in The Quest! That,i can't understand it!
Last, i believe that whoever likes LoDuca's music style, should buy this cd.
Pay attention to the 22 cue:Pas De Deux Femmes. It is one of a something and whoever remembers what's the scene of this song, will agree with me!Mmmm!

4 out of 5 stars A MIX OF THE BEST, THE WORST AND THE MISSING.......2001-11-29

To all truly Xena fans this CD is a must-have but have some lacks... Fun (comedy episodes music) scores destroy the the great combination of FALLEN ANGEL, THE RHEINGOLD TRILOGY AND I FRIEND IN NEED. In the first selections LoDuca creates spectacular high level music good enough to be played in a Symphony orchestra concert. The others selections have easy-to-fill-space western cowboy music instead of put M'Lilas song of DESTINY, Amazon's climbing trees of ADVENTURES IN THE SIN TRADE and NAJARA vs XENA music that would be gladly accepted by us. I doubt the company will launch a next CD but if they'll do this track and another valuable more must be there and the adittion of some famous characters quotes like "I have many skills" from Xena.

4 out of 5 stars Not exactly under thirteen, but lacking time to create a new account..........2006-02-26

I stumbled across this CD at Ross for 3.99. Being a complete POTO phan, I obviously bought it.

The biggest thing that bugs me about this recording is... who is the cast????? I would love to learn a name of two about the people that were in this.

As for the songs themselves... In my humble opinion, the overture is simply dreadful. No BOOM, no feeling, no speed, no passion. Although it does provide a gorgeous image of a delapitated chandelier slowly rising above an audience with many rugged pauses along the way. Christine's voice is odd. At times, I love her interpretation, but at others I receive little shudders of "WT-?" through my body.

However, this album deserves four stars if not for the phantom(s?)'s voice itself. I have had the honour of seeing Howard MG, Matt Cammelle, Jon Ian Bourg, and Brad Little perform, in addition to hearing most recordings out in existence. The talented phantom in this CD is most definately ranked in the top five. Emotion. Squee.

For the price that it is offered, I suggest that everyone should try this CD... if not to simply try something new.

5 out of 5 stars A great budget release (key word: BUDGET)!.......2006-02-24

I actually thought this was a very good budget release: having already seen the Broadway play in NYC, bought the DVD, the special edition two-pack soundtrack from the movie, and full original cast recording, I still wanted more: this CD is an entertaining re-record of the popular hits...sure, the cast is unknown, but I enjoyed this CD, especially at the super-cheap price: worth checking out if you are a big Phantom fan!

1 out of 5 stars It's OK........2005-12-05

I just purchased this cd today at Kmart. As a diehard Phantom Phan, I love everything that has to do with it. This cd contains ten highlights from the show. Although the people singing don't have amazing vocal ranges, they're still able to sing the songs.

Some of the songs ie: Think of Me and Angel of Music have different lyrics, which surprised me. I have never heard them before, so it was strange.

I spent five dollars on this. Even though it isn't amazing, it's still Phantom. I give it one star.

1 out of 5 stars OH MY GOD!!!! IT'S SO BAD.......2005-09-13

I purchased this CD because it was so cheap and I'm a HUGE fan of The Phantom of the Opera, not just the Lloyd Webber version. There is a reason this is so cheap, it SUCKS! The cast jumps around: the Phantom is sung by THREE different people throughout the CD and none of them can hold the notes the part requires. Angel of Music is repeated one right after the other for some reason and is then followed by The Mirror piece. Possibly the worst track on the CD is The Point of No Return, which is my favortie song from this musical. The Phantom's part is sung completely off key. Doesn't even deserve the 1 star I gave it. DO NOT waste your money, not even for die hard fans!

4 out of 5 stars Not for the average listener.......2002-09-26

Rypdal led a blistering rock trio through the 90s while at the same time writing symphonies and concertos. The two meet here with mixed, thought mostly good, results. Don't expect the ordinary and you won't be disappointed.
The CD opens with a fun, accessible tune by the trio but quickly moves thorough a dense atmospheric piece and when the strings come in they are used both to blend and contrast the guitar trio parts.
The title tune is a marvelous, brooding, granitic blend of strings and guitar. "But on the other hand" slowly builds such a palpable tension between strings and percussion that you'll probably need a minute to recover when it's over.
"One for the roadrunner" is a searing, free style guitar.
In between are pieces where the trio and strings dance, thrust and parry. Rypdal's unique guitar sings (and occasionally screams) throughout.

      3 out of 5 stars Excessively weird.......2000-01-04

This is pretty weird. Terje Rypdal is the composer and electric guitarist, along with drummer, bassist and strings trio. There are two or three decent tracks on here, notably Dancing Without Reindeers and Blue Angel, but the others, I'm afraid, are too weird to be pleasant. I respect Rypdal, and I'm in no doubt that this is highly artistic work, but It's too far out, mostly.
