5 out of 5 stars The crying game and other sixties classics.......2004-10-13

It is said that Dave (real name David Grundy) changed his name because he was a fan of Chuck Berry. Whether this is actually true or not, Dave's first UK hit was with a cover of a Chuck Berry classic, Memphis Tennessee. My baby left me, another cover of an R+B classic, and Baby it's you, a cover of a Shirelles song that Dave may have learned from the Beatles, also made the UK charts.

After three cover hits, Dave finally got an original song, The crying game, which he took into the UK top five. In his homeland, it is the song he is best remembered for. This position was reinforced via a movie of the same title, made in the nineties but featuring Dave's original recording as the title track.

One heart between two (another original song by the writer of The crying game) was only a minor hit. Dave then covered Little things (Bobby Goldsboro) and it became his second UK top five hit. Next came This strange effect, which was written by Ray Davies of the Kinks but not recorded by them. This was only a minor UK hit but topped the charts in Belgium and the Netherlands. His next two singles (I'm gonna take you there, If you wait for love) missed the UK charts but it is likely that they charted in Europe. Dave then returned to the UK top five with another cover, Mama (B J Thomas). This concluded Dave's run of chart success in the UK.

This compilation begin with his eight UK chart hits and ends with twelve of his best other tracks including the two singles that missed the UK charts. If you've heard and enjoyed any of Dave's songs (most likely The crying game) or if you like British pop music of the sixties generally, you should enjoy this collection.

4 out of 5 stars Dave Berry deserves a listen!.......2003-02-03

For fans of British beat music of the 1960s, this compilation will come as a pleasant surprise. Dave Berry never made much of a mark in the U.S., but in Britain and Europe he achieved a good measure of success. That Berry is largely unknown in the U.S. is a real shame as this import CD demonstrates that he could perform a wide range of material. Here, he's represented by twenty songs that range from straight ahead rockers like "Memphis, Tennesee" (his first hit single) to syrupy ballads like "Mama." Then there's the song for which he's best known, "The Crying Game," that features some beautiful guitar work from a pre-Yardbirds Jimmy Page. The sound on this CD, overall, is superb . . . as good as one could expect from recordings made in the mid-1960s.

Berry had a unique way of performing, often hiding his body behind stage props and his face behind hand gestures. For a glimpse into his performing style, check out "The Ghost Goes Gear," an obscure 1966 film that's available on DVD and which features The Spencer Davis Group. The second half of the film showcases a number of largely forgotten groups and artists of the era. Berry performs two numbers, including the aforementioned "Mama." This film is a must for fans of Dave Berry and, of course, The Spencer Davis Group.

4 out of 5 stars Dave Berry still rocking.......2001-04-30

Having lost all my records from the 60's of Dave's work I was so pleased to find this CD. All tracks are very good. If you want to hear a different dimension to his work, listen to track 17 - The Girl From The Fair Isle. It's very good. The CD brings back memories of seeing him live in Sheffield, yes, at Club 60. If you like his music & get the chance to go & see him, do. He sings as well as ever & certianly can still rock as seen on recent 60's UK tour.

4 out of 5 stars Finding "Dave Berry".......2000-08-11

On the sleeve cover of the "Very Best of Dave Berry", Dave mentions playing at the "Club 60" in Sheffield in the mid 60's. I was the owner of that club, and Dave used to play for me for $50.00 a gig in those days, always packing the house out, he was along with Joe Cocker, one of the biggest draw cards in the North of England at that time. I was absolutely thrilled to find Dave's CD collection of his 60's hits when browsing the net. For anyone who loves 60's music, this is a must for their collection, the quality and presentation on this album are as good as anything put out today, it has truly stood the test of time. Please pass a message on to Dave, and say its time he put another "masterpiece" collection together. Regards from an old friend, Tony Land - ex Club 60 (ps. I wonder if anyone out there remembers the "Club 60" in Sheffield)

4 out of 5 stars This is an enjoyable compilation of British 60's pop........1999-03-13

Since Dave Berry was only popular in the UK and Europe I had never heard of him until I came across his name and some of his available CDs while surfing on-line CD stores. Looking at track listings I was familiar with some of his songs as covers, but I had no idea how he sounded. His Top 5 hit "The Crying Game" was included on the soundtrack of the same name, so I sampled it at a CD store. I liked the sound enough to take a chance and buy this CD. I was pleasantly surprised to find the CD an excellent compilation of British sixties pop. I enjoyed it thoroughly. I wish I had learned of Dave Berry years earlier. As a fan of British beat music of '63-'66, I have a growing collection of CDs by many of the UK groups which did not gain popularity in the US. I believe Dave Berry should have. He was as good as, if not better than, many other male vocalists of the time.
