5 out of 5 stars Not Something to Sleep To.......2007-05-04

if you had enjoyed this movie, with the dialoge streaming throughout the trippy music of his dreams, you would love this soundtrack. its beautiful and strange. i love it.

1 out of 5 stars Love the score and soundtrack but CD is incomplete.......2007-03-09

I bought this primarily for the Jean-Michel Bernard music. I was disappointed because the disc doesn't include alternate versions sans voice-overs. Many of these tracks have the actors' voices over the music. Wouldn't be such a problem for me as bonus tracks perhaps. Or have music sans voice-overs as bounus tracks. Either way there's room enough as the disc clocks in at just under 49 minutes. Would be cool too if they included the film mixes of the Willowz tracks. Their "Ulcer Soul" song sounded psychedelic while fading in, out, and under the other audio in the film. I rated the disc one star but better to rate it 4 as it does have pretty much what was in the actual soundtrack, including the lovely "Coutances."

5 out of 5 stars A better soundtrack than Eternal Sunshine!.......2007-01-10

I absolutely loved the music in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind and thought that there couldn't be a more fitting original score......until i saw The Science fo Sleep. I bought this album just days after seeing Michel Gondry's latest film because I immediately fell in love with the music. The original score to the film exactly reflects the atmosphere of a dream state, as do the songs with rathe rnonsensically sweet lyrics and a drowsy tone. I am a huge fan of film and perhaps moreso the music featured in them, and this montauge of imagination is really my cup of tea. I really encourage anyone who loves the atmosphere of a Gondry film to buy this soundtrack, it's a fabulous one.

5 out of 5 stars A perfectly surreal match for a fairly surreal movie.......2006-10-03

Jean-Michel Bernard is the man behind the music for this, the music of the latest Michael Gondry movie ("Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind"). I had never heard of him before, but he happens to have a few movie scores under his belt, Gondry's "Human Nature" (2001) among them, along with a few other albums.

The sound he puts out reminds of a blend between that of the previous Gondry collaborator, Jon Brion, and the specific album that David Hirschfelder composed for the movie "Shine". He incorporates samples of dialogue from the movie with classical and jazz elements, resulting in an overall score that is a perfectly surreal match for a fairly surreal movie.

The album contains a couple of very nice tracks from The Willowz (they seem to be a personal favorite of Gondry), along with a Kool & The Gang song ("Steppin' Out") that break the "spell" in the music that otherwise flows much like a dream from track to track.

5 out of 5 stars Zzzzilousous.......2006-09-21

I have never slept as well as I slept while listening to this album. The sounds of crickets chirping and sea crashing against the rocks on the north shore of england allowed me to drift off into a land of bliss and serenity... i highly reccomend this album

4 out of 5 stars The Willowz Deliver Another Steamy Bowl Of Rock N Roll.......2007-07-05

This really is a good rock and roll album. The Willowz come off strong and together. I get the feeling they work very hard at sounding like there falling apart. This is what rock music is meant to be: dirty, loud, and played in the garage. I didn't give it five stars because I think there other album Are Coming is a little better. Chautauqua sounds more mature but just not quite as catchy. The album took about a week to grow on me but is now in heavy rotation on my ipod. That seems to be how it goes for any great album though (they take a while to grow on you and for the charm to set in). If your a Willowz fan buy this album now but if this is your first introduction buy Are Coming first and go from there.

4 out of 5 stars Toothsome.......2005-07-15

Pop the box and you see an Egon Schiele drawing, an attenuated early modernist nude wearing her anxieties on her skin. It's a fitting visual reference, for the Willowz are a nervous band, also a raw, ambitious, self-challenging, brilliant and perplexing one. They have great hooks, a gift for casually tossing off little bits of humor and beauty, and this timeless unselfconscious quality that's easier heard than described. In the bland stew of indie rock, the Willowz are a toothsome morsel. (review from Scram Magazine #21)

5 out of 5 stars Not your old man's punk rock.... .......2005-04-17

Back in my day we'd judge a song by how well you could dance to it. Yeah, those were the days my friend. Dancing all the time. To songs. But all that's changed now. I went to this Willowz set at a venue where everybody was standing near the stage and getting into the music. I was having a pretty good time, if I do say so myself. But the thing is, couples don't dance the way they did in the old days. Now kids do a little move they call the mosh. They're suppose to do it in a pit but if they don't have a pit handy they just go ahead and mosh anyway, knocking over old people who are standing near by trying to enjoy the music. And there's a lot to enjoy when you're listening to the Willowz! I've heard most these songs at their concerts, but they play um really loud at concerts. I like the CD because I can play the songs at a volume where I can distinguish the words. It turns out I like words too. It seems to me if you aren't going to dance you should at least have words to listen to. This CD has all my favorite Willowz stuff. I think I still like them better in concert because they are so adorable in person. HA! I'm just being funny with the "adorable" crack, because they are big time punk rock. But the truth is I'd take um over Jan and Dean any day. Jan and Dean sang that song called Sidewalk Surfin' back in the 60's. Nowadays, kids are still using those crazy skateboards. What I'd like to see is moshers on skateboards. That'd be something. But until that happens, I'm recommending this Willowz album as a must have. You should have your own copy so you can play it at the volume that suits you personally. But at least once, you kids ought to play it so you can hear the words.

4 out of 5 stars RISE.......2005-03-24

I saw these people at Spaceland recently and they are pretty cool. It's a great band from Los Angeles that more people need to get to know. They are the perfect band for Sympathy For The Record Industry. The cover of the album looks like it was taken at Long John's house. He supposedly has a cool art collection. I love the Egon Schiele drawings in the booklet. "Meet Your Demise" is very exemplary. They remind me of another band that started out on this label: The White Stripes. This record is full of exciting moments. The song "Vagabondage" is a true journey into the unknown. This album is an explosive drama. There are quiet and loud statements of youthful energy. The Willowz are undeniable. They are fine. Every song is entertaining and fun. Jessica Reynoza is wonderful to look at onstage. This is more evidence of the new LA scene that is taking over. We like to drive around in cars, hang out with Paris Hilton, but we like cool tunes too. The Willowz are a band on the rise.

On their debut, the Willowz didn't exactly come across as shy. Sure, the Anaheim quartet may be young in age (drummer Alex Nowicki is still in his teens), but they're bursting with the kind of confidence that takes some bands years to attain. Hey, working with Keith Morris (Circle Jerks), who guests on "We Live on Your Street," and Michel Gondry (The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) can do that (two songs on the soundtrack, one video). That said, Talk in Circles is a more diverse offering than their first. The garage-punk stuff rocks, of course, but there are quiet numbers, too, like charming country-tinged duet "Blind Story." That may disappoint those expecting a full-on rock assault, but it proves the Willowz aren't a one-trick pony and that--as long as they don't let that enviable store of confidence flag--they have a long career ahead of them. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

3 out of 5 stars Some talent here.......2006-02-17

I can understand people hating the singer of this group, but for some reason I did not. He sounds like Billy Corgan on helium, screeching and caterwauling with bristling energy. There are a few good songs (brevity being a good thing in several instances). If you enjoy the White Stripes then I think you'll enjoy this, so open your wallet, get out your credit card and "Add to Cart".

5 out of 5 stars Since when is a new direction a bad thing?.......2005-06-30

Upon playing this album for the first time, with no major expectations, I was pleasantly surprised with the new tracks. Sure, it might not be quite as raw and repetative at their debut album (which is a decent album, and I would recommend listening to that one first if you are unfamiliar with the band) however, the Willowz managed to reinvent their style and sound with Talk in Circles, and I can't understand why people would think that its a bad thing. I mean, since when was there a rule in music that you have to wait 4 or 5 albums until you're allowed to experiment with new ideas. The whole point of music is to write what feels right at the time. If that means taking your songs in a new direction with new ideas, more f***ing power to ya! If you are looking to buy CDs from artists who are going to rehash the same sh*t album after album, then go buy a Strokes CD. But I can understand why Talk in Circles is already receiving such harsh criticism. This album just wasn't made for those with short attention spans. You really need to sit and listen to the songs with an open mind and try to grasp/understand them before you can come to any conclusions. Yea the singer is off key at parts, but thats just the style of the music. You might as well say picasso was a sh**ty painter because he didn't paint perfect little straight lines...perfection isn't exactly what makes music enjoyable. Look at Seline Dion. She sings in key, but her songs are musical chinese water torture!

As for the album...Talk in Circles explores unusal time structures (such as "shriek" with its 5/4 timing) an introduction to new instruments (trumpet/organ/and did I hear an ocorana in track 6?) and experimental guitar movements that wheep with emotion, yet the Willowz still maintains the charm and edgy-ness of their self titled album. Strongly recommended!

1 out of 5 stars Willowz ... are you kidding me?.......2005-06-29

This album is a failed attempt to get in the hipster dumbass club. 20 tracks of pretenious self involved crap. There actually are a couple decent songs, but it also might be good if it was their 4th or 5th album, you when bands go to the desert to find themselves. They just re invented themselves after being a band for about one year, when they should have stayed true to their roots. If you want to hear a good Willowz record, buy the first one "Willowz s/t".

Vortex 2.0

2 out of 5 stars Well crafted songs, but ................2005-06-28

The songs are written in an appealing fashion, and the lead guitar and drumming work very well together. Unfortunately, the lead singer's voice just isn't going to cut it. He is off key and quite annoying. He simply can't sing. This group could do well with a decent vocalist. The lyrics are also pretty lame. Anyone over eighteen years of age will be expecting a little more from the song verses. Four stars for the music, but the vocals make this a CD I can't recommend.

5 out of 5 stars A major band.......2005-06-12

The Willowz have been one of the cool bands playing a lot in the LA scene. This is their second record and it is great. They come from Anaheim, that ghastly place. They combine the cool sound of LA punk and the New York Dolls. This whole record has a vibe that I remember when I bought the first few Slash Records. This is twenty tracks and there is little filler. Richie James Follin is a classic frontman that reminds me of Jeffrey Lee Pierce. He is already being called the new Jack White. This guy is happening. If you just hear this music and you don't start tapping your foot, what is wrong with you? Just listen to "Dead Ears" or "We Live On Your Street" and turn it real loud. Put your ears up to the speakers. Do it now! After you buy this album!

5 out of 5 stars The Rub.......2006-04-04

To record in the garage, or not to record in the garage? That is the question.

Willowz, a trio of Anaheim teenagers, has garnered attention recently via two songs from their self-titled debut ("I Wonder" and "Something"), included by Jon Brion alongside Beck's "Everybody's Gotta Learn Sometime" on the Eternal Sunshine soundtrack. First recorded in a garage, Willowz was later cut in a proper studio, but in light of the present garage pop revival, the version chosen for release was the original, carbon-monoxide tinged session.

Logging in at a riff over twenty minutes, Willowz, though not labeled as such, has to be considered an EP, implying, for this reviewer, that it should be held to a unique set of criteria less stringent than those by which LPs are judged.

Singer Richie James March, a cross between Julian Casablancas and Jack White (how timely!), spits sophomoric lyrics that touch on such universal teenage themes as flying to Mars, the overwhelming urge to "go", trying to disappear, all things "free", the lethargy of "old" people and "getting down".

Jessica Reynoza, bass player / backup singer, is a welcome change of pace, especially on raucous opener "Meet Your Demise", where she somewhat sexily sings "You're the one, Baby / Meet your demise" in a voice startlingly like (you guessed it!) Meg White's. This begs the question: If you're a fairly attractive young rocker without a vocal identity to call your own, why on Mars would you choose shrinking violet Meg as a mentor? Maybe Reynoza just wants to be popular.

"Something" is another highlight, sounding conspicuously like a lost track from The Strokes' Is This It? sessions. When March howls "Be true / You ain't got nothin' to do" the listener both cringes at the squeal of mic feedback and bobs their head along with the cheap drum and guitar backdrop.

"I Wonder" is the only ballad here, featuring lyrics that sound as though they were lifted straight out of the margins of an Algebra textbook ("I have an urge deep within me / To quit school and just be free") in a warbled falsetto against a raw acoustic guitar (And even in this lame lyric Willowz imitates The White Stripes' more interesting "I'm inclined to go finish high school / Just to make her [the mother whose heart Jack wants to warm] notice that I'm around"). While such lyrical vapidity precludes "I Wonder" from moving the listener emotionally, the track does serve as respite in an otherwise aggressive mix.

Okay, so perhaps we're being a bit hard on these kids. However familiar, the Willowz EP is a head-bobbingly good time. Despite the trite lyrics, borrowed sound and dubious musicianship, Willowz clearly are having a great time performing and that enthusiasm is not lost on the listener. If you're looking for originality or technical proficiency, you're spinning the wrong disc, but if you're here to indulge in some trashy, teenage rock, you've come to the right garage.

5 out of 5 stars Be true, you ain't got nothing to do!.......2004-05-24

This album rocks. Driven by howling vocals and fast, distorted guitars, The Willowz give a breath of life into the overhyped and tired Garage Rock genre. The two standout tracks of the album (both of which appear on the Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind) offer the best oof The Willowz world. 'I Wonder' is an acoustic song with really good lyrics. 'Something' is by far the best song on the album. It just... rocks. So if you are a fan of Garage Rock, Indie, Punk or good, fast, fun music pick this album up.

5 out of 5 stars On their way... and there!.......2004-04-22

This charming trio has captured the hearts of Anaheim and are rocketing to everywhere. This album proves that they are the first Punk-Rock band. At no other time in music history has a band incorporated all the passion, zeal, and respect for music needed to truly define Punk-Rock. The Willowz do just this with their 20 minute album recorded in a garage. They had a studio version of this album but they decided that the garage verison sounded better. So, they released this one. It has sincere hooks that can cradle the lesser listener. They're young but that only adds to what they have. They have a lead singer with an infectious voice. They have a hot girl on base that does enchanting vocals too. And they have have a great drummer. They understand their craft and make it as enjoyable for the listener as it is for them. They haven't created a new music genre they just made a Punk-Rock album that's actually Punk-Rock.
