Based on Somerset Maugham's middling novel Theater, Annette Bening stars as the title character, an aging star of the London stage whose life and the melodramas she performs have come to mirror each other. Composer Mychael Danna sets those conflicts to a score that emphasizes theatrical surfaces and rigid role-playing, utilizing a finely honed classical pastiche approach with parallels to his previous period-evoking work on Vanity Fair. His cues here are rooted in the light romantic chamber music of the 19th century, though they frequently bristle with a more contemporary energy and aplomb. Offering counterpoint to Danna's dignified, oft-precious classical confections and mining the story's more sensual human dimensions are pop chestnuts from the era (The Andrews Sisters' saucy "Bei Mir Bist Du Schon" and Mills Brothers' jaunty "Life Is Just a Bowl of Cherries"), as well as fine contemporary takes of "They Didn't Believe Me" and Noel Coward's "Mad About the Boy" by Denzel Sinclair and Alison Jicar's elegant read of "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes." --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful melody but lacks variety.......2005-04-11

Being Julia OST has a beautiful main melody which occurs over and over again throughout the tracks. I especially like "Curtain Up" and "Quite Alone". However, Being Julia OST doesn't have other strong melody to show along side with the main melody which seems a little too simple for a complete album. The movie is great too. Annette Bening's performance is outstanding.

Onstage, nobody could match the wham of Sammy Davis Jr. Best known now as arguably the coolest member of the Rat Pack, Sammy Davis Jr. was one of the world's great entertainers, a guy capable of funny impersonations, heartwarming ballads, and lively jazz-inspired songs--usually in the same set. Granted, Sinatra's vocal skills overshadowed Davis on record, but what other musician has found such success as a writer, Broadway star, vocalist, dancer, and comedian (all the while helping to break down racial barriers)? With Yes I Can! The Sammy Davis Jr. Story, Rhino Records has assembled an impressive four-CD package of the crooner's greatest moments. On "Smile, Darn Ya, Smile" (a track that's been out of print for 45 years), the 23-year-old vocalist shows little of the grace, style, and vocal warmth he would bring to such classics as "Hey There," "The Candy Man," and "I've Gotta Be Me." The first three CDs feature all of Davis's hits (and a few tracks meant for completists) from his vast 1949-78 output. But the fourth disc of live performances shows Sammy in his true glory. For those of us who loved his portion of The Summit in Concert (that out-of-control relic of Rat Pack extravagance), this disc reveals the rest of the story: Sammy Davis Jr. knew how to perform like no other. Whether singing a West Side Story medley or tossing impersonations into "Rock-a-Bye Your Baby," it's clear that there will never be another performer like Sammy Davis Jr. Sure, there are single CD compilations featuring most of the singer's hits, but this package tells the whole story. --Jason Verlinde

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars YES HE CAN.......2006-10-06

This is the boxed set you need to get. What a varity of songs! It comes with a book and 4 disc...each disc has over 20 songs to enjoy. Disc 4 has a recording of him on stage. You can almost see him in your mind on stage, comedy, singing and his impressions of celeberities is pretty funny. Can't say more about this.

5 out of 5 stars Glad I got this box set!.......2006-02-16

Even though I'm relatively new to the long list of Sammy Davis Jr's fans, I've really taken to his music. I wanted a good compilation of his music to start my collection, and after reading reviews here on Amazon, I thought this box set would be the best option. I was right.
I've had mine for only a couple days and haven't even gotten through all the discs yet, but I'm definitely pleased with it. I was already familiar with a handful of the songs in this collection, and am enjoying the "new" songs as well. I also love seeing the rare photos of Sammy and look forward to reading the personal accounts froom his friends and fellow entertainers in the booklet that came with the set.
I would recommend this box set for any Sammy fan.

5 out of 5 stars What the world needs now is the music of Sammy.......2006-01-03

This is a wonderful box set in highest quality with wonderful and rare pictures of Sammy Davis jr. Included are four artfull created CDs, the sound of the music is clear and smashing. Sammy in best-voice!

5 out of 5 stars Sammy Davis The King.......2005-02-18

I cannot say enough about this box set- it has everything you could want to hear from Sammy Davis. I have always enjoyed his music and I do have one or two of his other cd's but nothing can compare to this set. I especially like the 4th disc- his imitations are just wonderful and to me it has the feel of being right there with him in the nightclub. This is one set that is going to get a lot of play!

5 out of 5 stars Sammy Reconsidered.......2003-02-15

This well-chosen set makes the case powerfully that Sammy was the most talented of the Rat Pack (though Frank made him regret saying so). The material here sparkles from beginning to...well, "The Candyman", anyway, and that stuff doesn't get going until pretty near the end. People who have reduced this gifted artist to the campy talk-show perennial that he chose to become are cheating themselves, but this is powerful proof that he deserves to live all that down. Even if he was guilty of not taking his gifts seriously enough, a great recorded legacy remains; highlights include his collaborations with guitarist Laurindo Almeida (yielding perhaps the definitive "Here's That Rainy Day") and arranger Marty Paich. The pipes are beyond question, but notice what a witty and intelligent performer Sammy is- his total command of the material truly rivals Sinatra's.

The fourth disc captures the live act very well, but here's a minor kvetch: with that area so well served by a number of recent Sammy releases, it would have been nice to have had more studio material, since so much is still unavailable. Anyway, this is a great set by a criminally misjudged performer, and it's nicely packaged, too. It'll make a believer out of you.

5 out of 5 stars Unmissable Yes Songs .......2006-03-07

If you are a true fan of Yes then you will be able to understand exactly what is meant by the intricate delicacy of these songs. First off, the song "Your Move" is great in that it has a better build up than other studio recorded versions of "Your Move". Also the song "Violet, Purple, Rose" is not just for Yes fans but for anyone who truly has fallen in love with music. It is the most beautiful "Yes" song I have ever encountered and it is indelible and pure. If you love Yes; if you love music, then this is the album for you.

1 out of 5 stars Be ware of cheep compilations flooding the market.......2005-07-20

Essentially a repackaging of Yes Friends and Relatives featuring recent live Yes recordings - like from Keys to Ascension, plus various recent solo track.

There's a whole series of this black-boxed "Story" series. It's merely a way for a minor label to cash in on artists that had once release stuff through them. Such products merely flood the market. Check out the discography on [...] to see was releases are authorised by the group.

5 out of 5 stars A new take on Yes.......2004-09-06

This 2 cd set, while I don't consider it a set of classic yes music, is an impressive package none-the-less. Included are tracks from different Yes members, as well as live versions of some yes favorites. I was pleasently surprised by the quality of music received, even though the set is priced very low for 2 cds. Every track is solid, with each band member getting their chance to shine. I particularly liked the live versions of Awaken and Your Move. Also very impressive were Rick Wakeman's tracks, especially the 32 minute "Journey to the Centre of the Earth". If you're like me, and haven't yet heard the band's solo works and would like to see the different aspects of yes, this set is a great investment. The artwork, true to yes, is attractive, and the booklet includes several pictures and quotes from band members. 5 stars is an easy choice when considering all you get.

This is the decade when Deutsche Grammophon discovered America. Though the label's motherland is still well represented by Herbert von Karajan's unveiling young Anne-Sophie Mutter in Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 5 and Bruch's Violin Concerto No. 1 (both played with the freshness of youth), Carlo Maria Giulini brought the yellow label to Los Angeles in a much-heralded return to opera with Verdi's Falstaff. The mellifluous though not always dramatically attuned dream cast features Barbara Hendricks (Nannetta), Katia Ricciarelli (Alice Ford), and Renato Bruson as the most poetic Falstaff on record. Leonard Bernstein's all-star but problematic Candide and West Side Story recordings are heard in well-chosen excerpts, and the one-act opera Trouble in Tahiti is reconstituted from his opera A Quiet Place (in which it was dispersed and imbedded). Elsewhere, Ivo Pogorelich's early Chopin Sonata No. 2, Ravel's "Gaspard de la nuit," and Prokofiev's Sonata No. 6 show a musician of staggering imagination limited by unrefined technique. Horowitz in Moscow, Krystian Zimerman's Chopin Ballades and Daniel Barenboim's Saint-Saëns Symphony No. 3 have all aged well, though Gidon Kremer's Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto and Giuseppe Sinopoli's Mendelssohn "Italian" Symphony paired with Schumann's Symphony No. 2 have surprisingly little to say. Mischa Maisky's Bach and Vivaldi recordings (many with Martha Argerich on modern piano) have lots to say, but not to the historically informed performance crowd. --David Patrick Stearns

5 out of 5 stars Superb Schumann, etc........2000-11-08

Seven years ago I was in a Vienna music shop and passed on the opportunity to buy the original Sinopoli recording of the Schumann Second - my favorite musical work - with the Vienna Philharmonic. Until this collection was released, I had never heard this particular 2nd Symphony recording which is now truly my favorite (and I have them all). It even led me to find the original release (which includes the Manfred Overture) by searching the Internet for used CDs. Sinopoli and Vienna beautifully convey the struggle and ultimate triumph of this great symphony.

The other recordings are also among DG's best and helped to fill in several repertoire gaps in my collection. I highly recommend the entire set. Thanks to DGG for reissuing these great recordings, especially Sinopoli's Schumann.

5 out of 5 stars Who says there was nothing good in the 1980s?.......2000-04-09

Not enough can be said for this marvellous compilation of some of the finest recordings from 1978-87! Nevertheless, I will try to do some justice and start at the beginning. Anne-Sophie Mutter's Mozart concerto and stellar Bruch set the tone for this set. Very few recordings have the depth of insight into the Mozart that she does, and for such a young woman! The next disc is dedicated to another violinist par excellence: Gidon Kremer, whose Tchaikowsky concerto will blow you out of your chair, even compared with the Perlman recording of the same work. Disc three focuses on Daniel Barenboim the conductor, although the last track features one of his finest recorded piano works, the paraphrase of Rigoletto by Liszt. The two recordings featured are (brace yourself), the Perlman/Paris recording of the Lalo Symphonie Espagnole, the likes of which have not been known before or since, and the Saint-Saens Organ Symphony with Chicago and the organ of Chartres. The little catch in the Saint-Saens is that the organ part and orchestral work were recorded a month seperate from each other and across the Atlantic, but if you didn't read the liner notes, it would be impossible to tell; the editing is so well done! Ivo Pogorelich's Gaspard de la Nuit gives the work new meaning, not to say any less of his Chopin Second sonata. Giulini's conducting of Verdi's Falstaff is a force not to be reckoned with, with flawless casting to boot. I would expect more from Sinopoli than the Schumann delivers, however this is partly DG's fault for picking one of his least successful recordings. The Bernstein disc is all of his own music, including highlights from the splendid Candide and Trouble in Tahiti. Have a laugh over Carreras' pronunciation in West Side Story (why cast him as the American! ) and the other thoroughly inappropriate voices for this work, but remember that Bernstein was given the cold shoulder on this work and was trying to make it appeal to the classical crowd that had unfortunately shunned it on Broadway.

Maisky's cello playing is next, with the three sonatas originally for harpsichord and viola da gamba being played on modern cello with Martha Argerich at the piano. These are excellent recordings if inauthentic, but are certainly the best modernizations available, as are the two Vivaldi concerti with Orpheus. Saving the best for last, Vladimir Horowitz's landmark 1986 return to Moscow is no less breathtaking on the 1000th listening than on the first. There may be no better single CD of piano music in existance; the simplest track "Träumerei" from Schumann's Kinderszenen is utter perfection and emotion molded into one. Zimerman holds his own beautifully, though, with some of the best Chopin Ballades to be had. True, they lack some of the momentum and drive of the Rubinstein recordings, but the sheer technical ability displayed along with absolute control (and they're not at all skimpy on the emotion either!), they are in the top five recordings of these works ever. Add to this his recording of the Liszt E-flat concerto with Seiji Ozawa/Boston Symphony, which is flawless. The cherry on top (!) is the Liszt Totentanz, which is so often played as an overly flashy, bangy, loud and raucous showpiece. Not so here, even in such a murderously difficult and crashing work, Zimerman displays control, even if it means wrestling the work to the floor. This set is pricey, no doubt, but well worth it (and the sore arms you'll get carrying it home, another good reason to mail-order it) for the unmatched brilliance.
