4 out of 5 stars touring with metric!!!.......2006-02-01

This band will be touring with metric and i will be seeing them along with Islands at the commodore on April 1st yessss!! Saw metric only a couple months ago on october 30th at the commodore an they were ahmazzzzzing, introduced me to most serene republic! hope these bands are just as good im trying to get my hands on this cd as we speak.

5 out of 5 stars Bizzare Tunes.......2004-10-30

The first track, Sweet Fanny Annie, sets the tone for this smoothly crafted yet odd sounding album. Nice mix of the old and the new. The tracks that appealed the most to my ear are the aforementioned first track along with You've Pleased the King, Mixed Calvary, and Land of Jade. If you don't like normal, this is for you!

3 out of 5 stars A Canadian bands combination of ecclecticism.......2004-08-11

The Beta Band are no more, yet Panurge is carrying on their spirit. 'Throw Down The Reins' is very similar to The Beta Band's earlier albums, eg, Three EP's. Krautrock experimentalism, psychadelia, and quirky DJ turntabilism. Listen closely and you'll also hear bits of 'The Soft Bulletin' by The Flaming Lips, 'Up In Flames' by Manitoba, 'The Coast Is Never Clear' by Beaulah, and 'Pet Sounds' by The Beach Boys. A nice little gem that will probably get unnoticed by most of the population, which really shouldn't be, which is all the reason why this CD is well worth a listen.

5 out of 5 stars A Diamond in the mud.......2004-03-30

I work for a student newspaper at Mount Allison University (argosy.ca), and we get a lot of random cds from struggling artists. A lot of crap. This however, is amazing. It's songs are well written, but what sets it apart is the bizarre range of sounds made on the cd. Techno beats, timpani, and best of all, the Shakespearian harpsichord outro on the last track make this a truly original album. The best way to describe it would probably be Paul McCartney remixed by Air, but that doesn't do it justice. Hear it now.
