"Post-Nuclear Pseudo-Alternative Folk-Tinged Art-Pop" Begins.......2002-05-08
Linford once described Over The Rhine's music (somewhat tongue-in-cheek, I think) as "post-nuclear, pseudo-alternative, folk-tinged art-pop" and their first album "Til We Have Faces" shows the origins of the band. The opener "Eyes Wide Open" is a representative track for the OTR sound referred to by Linford.
It's been eleven years since this first came out, and it is striking how upbeat the band sounds throughout most of the album (in contrast with some later albums such as "Patience" and "Good Dog Bad Dog"). Equally striking is how Karen's voice has gotten stronger over the years (compare this with "Films for Radio" for contrast). The album contains several songs that would define OTR for years: "Like A Radio", still a concert fave these days and "If I'm Drowning" (compare it to the live version on the "Besides" album, though!). Other great tracks include "Iron Curtain" and "Paul & Virginia". At 55 min., the album is a bit long, but it is a very strong debut.
I also note that the version listed here on Amazon must be a reissue (1995 apparently), because the original 1991 version which I have lists 14 tracks, not 16: the last 2 listed here ("Radio Coda" and "Downfall") do not appear on the original. Either way, you will enjoy the debut of Cincinnati's best band!
The most underated band in America...with love from Texas.......2000-07-21
I saw OTR first at a music fest in Illinois in 1993...Karen's intoxicating voice drew us in like the siren's song...this is the most beautiful music...i'd have em play at my wedding if i could...I've since seen OTR four more times...if you can get your hands on Patience buy as many copies as you can...any OTR album makes the best gift...so romanatic...so enchanting...perfection...try to find Eve and Besides as well.

so good it shocked me.......1999-09-24
I saw OTR twice on tour with the Cowboy Junkies and they sparked my interest. I picked up one of their disks at a show in DC and Loved it. I have bought everything i can get my hands on and they are Amazing. They are sure to be up and comming and they are a generally friendly band. This CD has some great stuff on it...and the songs you don't like right away will grow on you with just a few listens....don't let these CD's pass you buy.
In the top 5 of my collection.......1999-09-11
This record has been reissued under the IRS label as well as the original Scampering songs label. If you look hard enough, you may be able to find it in Cincinnati, and the search is well worth it.

Morose Aberration.......2007-04-11
Rarely do I qualify a review, but for this CD, it's a must. I am a musician who has been a terriffic fan of Genesis--particularly Banks and Hackett, to include Steve's prolific solo career. It is crystal clear that Steve Hackett is one of the real gems of modern music. His craftmanship is to gawk at, even his early work with Genesis on stage, sitting on his stool in a professorial repose--playing that intrepidly wrought haunting acoustic-sensitive dynamic, poker faced--sporting that goofy goatee and those nerdish black horn-rimmed eye glasses that conjure visions of Sigmund Freud after having lectured at a neuropsychiatric conference in Vienna, or even Austin Powers laying in an alley after a two week bender.
I recall fondly Hackett's post-Genesis solo show at the Tower Theatre in Philly--I was in the second row at center stage, basking in resplendant bliss as the dude started the show with just the acoustic on a stool in ambient room light--sans beard and sans bravado--cruising right into the first teaser of the night, a somewhat slower and more intense version of "Horizons." Oh MAN!
I love great music and my mind is wide open to all that lies in the entire audible range that is innovative, unique, distinct, and bizarre--but I do not get "Til We Have Faces." My menagerie of Steve Hackett CDs runneth over and I consider it a collecter's set. That is the ONLY reason that I have not winged that CD out of my window like a Frisbee, to be used as a skeet target. The experience of listening to this CD for the first time is probably similar to the feeling one might get while watching a US Air Force air show, during which one of the F-14's suddenly stops in mid air and then drops to the ground in a horrendous explosive crash. I sat in grieving disbelief at the first listen. I listened one more time before I laid the corpse to rest.
I respect those who rendered positive reviews for this CD. That is what makes music so great--it doesn't matter what other people say, as long as it moves the listener, it's worthwhile. In this case, I neither like it or even get it. That said, given Steve Hackett's track record for producing utter greatness, I consider this one particular effort a mere hiccup in what is otherwise--both qualitatively and quantitatively, an incredible body of musical work of which any artist from any era could be proud.
Are You A Good Guitarist?.......2002-09-24
Then you should listen to "Myopia." A percussionist? Check out "What's My Name" and "The Rio Connection." Blues guitarists should take in "Let Me Count The Ways." And for anyone who remembers lullabys, drift off to "Taking The Easy Way Out." This album has many different forms, all stirred with a latin feel. Very original for its time and it still holds up well. It's great fun.

Customer Reviews:
Awesome band.......2005-01-07
This band is absolutely awesome. My taste in music is very broad, ranging from American Idol to maroon five to noise ratchet and finch, so I hope that my opinion is unbiased.
Permanent Solution- long intro, great song, although its also really short. While I was listening to it, I was thinking what an awesome song this was, then suddenly it ended. I think its probably less than 3 minutes.
Vanity- great lyrics and such an emotional song, has a good message that "beauty if only skin deep"
For You I'll Be Forgetting Me- this song makes me think of the first one, but because I like the first song, of course I'm going to like this one. I think this song is more dynamic and longer as well
Disappear- I think this is one of the best songs on the album, at least one of my favorites. So much emotion is put into this song. It's a change of pace from the previous songs, where its somewhat slower, but I absolutely love it.
Train- I didn't really like the first 30 seconds of this song. When ever I listen to this song I always fast forward cause it just doesn't fit the rest of the song. But for the remaining minutes after that I like a lot, even though again it was similar to the first and third song
Wardrobe- again a slow and emotional song, but even slower than Disappear. I think in some ways its better where he voice is a lot more versatile in this song, where he goes from loud to soft, but in other ways I still like Disappear's lyrics and song better. Nevertheless this is a great song.
End-I cant say I really love this song, to me its more like an inferior "Wardrobe", its ok, jut there are better songs on this album
Away from you- sorta falls in the middle of slow and fast, I don't know how to really describe this track. For me, I simply like this song.
My Day-the way this song starts out is great, the main part of this song is somewhat weak, but the beginning and end of this song is perfect.
Till We Have Faces-OMG my favorite song on this album and probably in general. What a great song! They made a good choice in choosing this for their title cause its simply fantastic. He has incredibly range and holds this one note for a respectable amount of time. This song is just perfect in all ways, meaning, song, etc...
Way to the Heart-the most unique song on this album. The background music is a piano, so it's a very slow song, no loud yelling or drums. I think its an acquired taste, one that I don't have. So for me, I don't like this song although I do have to give it credit for putting me asleep. For most people it's a beautiful song, just not for me.
So over all this is probably one of my favorite albums. Noise ratchet is great. I regret to say never saw them in concert and I probably never will since they broke up. If you are debating about buying this CD, but just for Til we have faces, I cannot emphasize how amazing that song is.
Excellent Band!.......2004-07-05
Noise Ratchet really is my favorite emo band even though bands don't really like to be labeled as emo. Along with other local San Diego bands, I have had the chance to seen them often at local venues. Sadly they have recently broken up but who knows if they will return with a new lineup. Every song on here is sooo good, you never have to hit the skip button when listening to it. Track 5 is probably my least favorite but it is still pretty good. Also they put on one of the best live shows I have ever seen. They are just filled with so much energy on stage, you really have to see them to belive it. Also I have heard some people say they don't like them anymore because they had heard that they weren't Christian anymore. I don't know if it is true or not(I don't think they are anti-Christian or anything)because they were never a super evangelical preaching band or anything. Anyways this is a must have for emo, punk fans!
simply amazing album.......2004-01-10
i have loved these guys ever since i discovered them on plea for peace. they show their amazing talent for making great music all the way through this album. this is definitely one of the best albums i have heard. i strongly recommend this cd.
Best Cd I own.......2003-11-08
This cd is one of the best cds I have ever listened to. Unlike many cds that build a cd around one good single, every song on this album is incredible. I recommend this cd to anyone regardless your style.
Little Bit of a Letdown.......2003-10-18
Granted, my opinion seems to go againgst the flow, but this album disappointed me. Personally, I discovered Noise Ratchet for myself on MP3.com about 3 years ago. They had a five-song EP called "Why We Cry" that was available only at MP3.com. I ordered it, and loved it so much that when I lost the first copy I ordered another one. When I found this CD in a Hot Topic a couple years later, I eagerly snatched it up.
Till We Have Faces is a huge departure from the simple, heartfelt songwriting that instantly won me over on Why We Cry. Instead, it jumps on the textbook emo bandwagon. They read the book, they took "emo 1101," they aced all the exams, and now they released a textbook emo album. His voice often reminds me of the guy from Incubus on this one. It sounds intentional.
To its merit, there are some good "emo" tracks on this CD. If you just LOVE emo, then you should probably check it out, but if you liked the good ol' Noise Ratchet, then this may be a shock for you. Definetely try before you buy on this one, like I didn't do.

A Masterpiece.......2006-01-14
I couldn't agree more with the previous reviewer. I'm a huge fan of both Metheny (primarily his non-PMG work) and Thomas, and this pairing is perfect. Metheny has been quoted as saying that this setting him caused him to play in a way that he never had before and never has since. To my ears, Metheny's stuff on this disc is like a cross between the adventurousness he showed on Song X and the straight-ahead stuff from Question and Answer. Mind-blowing stuff.
I've never understood why Thomas isn't more well-known. I read once that he was "too 'out' for the funky cats and too funky for the 'out' cats." Listen to this disc (paricularly "It's You Or No One") and you'll understand why that may be accurate.
Of all the 300+ jazz discs I own, I can put none above this one. It's one of my all-time favorites (along with Coltrane's "Giant Steps," Derek Bailey's "Ballads," the 20th anniversary version of "Song X," Geri Allen's "The Nurturer," and an out-of-print "Sonny Rollins: The Quartets Featuring Jim Hall" disc).
AN ABSOLUTE MUST-HAVE.......2002-10-07
I dont know of any other CD in my (large) jazz collection that I have more affection for. This is hard out, not for the faint-heated, joyous melodic improvising - not just patterns over chords. While it is often texturally dense, it is never inaccessible. If you like jazz at all - grab this - play it loud and listen closely. I could not recommend an album more. Great guitar - from Pat Metheny NO LESS!! wonderful muscular drumming from Terri Lynne Carrington (best female jazz drummer?) and tunes you probably know but have never heard like this. I love the version here of one of my favorite tunes - "You dont know what love is" - it is great to jam along with too.
Listen to the drum / sax intro to Angel Eyes .
Stunning Tenor, soprano and flute from Gary Thomas.

Adventurous, surprising, keeps you guessing!.......2002-04-05
This is one of the best albums out there. From the blues of "The Rio Connection" and "Let Me Count The Ways" to the other-worldly "What's My Name," you can't guess what the next song is going to be like. The best ones are "Myopia" (which combines Heavy Metal with a splash of J.S. Bach's Brandenburg Concerto) and "A Doll That's Made In Japan," which almost takes you across the Pacific with its Oriental feel. Like Brazilian drums? Check out "Matilda Smith (Williams, Home For The Aged)." There is about four minutes worth, mixed in with a monologue of Steve's guitar and "Camino Royale" from the "Highly Strung" album. A thouroughly imaginative creation.
The Hook that Reeled Me In.......2001-05-16
I knew nothing of Steve Hackett beyond the Genesis albums Trick of the Tail and Wind of Wuthering when I bought 'Til We Have Faces on cassette back in 1987, and I had no idea what to expect. "Duel" was the opening track on that version, and I was floored. Hokey lyrics, absolutely, but the music . . .! Wild, agressive, full of more energy than I had ever thought possible. "Matilda Smith," more of the same. It was two years before I so much as saw another Steve Hackett album, but when I did I bought three sound unheard on the basis of TWHF and never regretted it. True, this album is not perfect (no album with "Taking the Easy Way Out" on it could be), but it is extremely enjoyable and lots of fun, even 14 years after I first heard it.
Just Short Of Perfect Album: Underappreciated By "Fans".......2000-09-23
First acquainted with this album, from the original vinyl release, I find that it has aged remarkably well. Some of these songs are more original than what passes for original now.
"What's My Name" is incredible. Conjures up images of a world weary immortal, having seen so much and forgotten so much as well. I hesitate to relate it to Highlander, because there is nothing Scottish about it, but it has the same tiredness of that character, or Barry Sadler's novels of Casca. Atmosphere and intricacy. Artful.
"Myopia" is a better song than some reviews would lead you to believe. It was, and is, a moving rock song, with accomplished playing.
The lyrics for "Duel" are admittedly weak, but the song is short and catchy otherwise. Inspired by the film of the same title.
"Mathilda Smith" is a prime example of the kind of wit that occurred in late 70's Genesis lyrics. The song structure is atypical, ending with an instrumental build then falling action, meant to symbolize the escape of the bored shut-in seniors from their home and back into the world. Hackett isn't the only star of this peace, letting the rest of the musicians get in some musical contribution.
The other songs may be hit and miss for some, depending on mood. This is a mixed album, but that is the strength of the work. Regular rock, prog-rock, some reserved and mellow playing, electric and subtle-acoustic sounding depending on the tracks you listen to. It has aged well in my opinion, and with new tracks should be worth purchase on disc.
