Taken in one concentrated best-of dose, it becomes evident what a coup the B-52's pulled off when they turned their own concentrated craziness into genuine hits. This is some of the weirdest stuff ever to make the charts, much less be loved by the masses. It's all here though--the mad surf guitar of Ricky Wilson (and later Keith Strickland), the banshee wails of Cindy Wilson and Kate Pierson, and, of course, the, um, well, let's say vocalizing of freaky Fred Schneider. "Party out of Bounds" with a "Rock Lobster" on "Planet Claire," or "Roam" over to the "Love Shack" in "Private Idaho." Whatever you do in the B-52's universe will at least be good, clean, perverse fun. Contains two new songs. --Michael Ruby
Customer Reviews:
B-52 is the bomb.......2007-06-02
Awesome compilation of the B52s kind of off-beat, wacky, yet lovable and totally listenable music. The lyrics of many tunes are weird but funny. Scneider's goofy singing style somehow works well too. Lots of tracks here, including lesser-known gems. Especially cool tunes: Rock Lobster, Private Idaho, Mesopotamia [kinda eerie in a way], Love Shack [probably the one with most radio play back in the day], Roam, and Good Stuff. But all are solid. Very good CD to pop in and just let play, no need to be anywhere near the skip button.
B-52's - 'Time Capsule: Songs For A Future Generation' (Reprise).......2007-05-15
Review number 62. Fantastic eighteen track retrospect compilation of this reunited TOP of the line '80's new wave band. As for this genre of music, it JUST doesn't get much better than this. I saw the B-52's play a free gig at an outdoor mall just last summer and it was honestly one of the funnest concerts I've attended in sometime. As for this CD, you get to fully experience once again the college radio staples and some of the band's lesser known goodies, like "Planet Claire", "52 Girls", "Party Out Of Bounds", the unreleased 'original' edit for "Summer Of Love", "Love Shack", "Roam", the awesome "Is That You, Mo-Dean?" plus two new cuts, of which both are good. What, no "Dance This Mess Around" ? That's my personal B-52's favorite of all time. Nonetheless, 'Time Capsule' is still highly recommended.
B-52's.......2007-02-03
I saw Rock Lobster done "live" on Saturday Night live back in the early 80's. They did a good job. I thought that they were just another Punk band. But they showed their Pop sensiblities with "Rock Lobster." It didn't hurt that it turned out to be one Major hit! Of course, "Love Shack" and "Mesopotamia" were not far behind. A classic album all the way around - Five stars for the B-52's Tan-Ru!! (whatever that means...)
Hair Today, Here Tomorrow.......2006-06-10
Every once in a very long while a thoroughly delightful group appears out of nowhere with something new to say and a distinct, immediately identifiable way of saying it. Such is the case with the B-52's who pull off a nearly impossible trick and make it look easy. For starters, they are musically intoxicating and certainly can't be topped for dance party appeal. The vocal blend of Cindy Wilson and Kate Pierson is a lovely, natural fit, and Fred Schneider's droll, spoken word additions provide an effective and often hilarious counterpoint. Keith Strickland knows that a band like this needs basic, pure drumming, nothing flashy, and he delivers. The late, lamented Ricky Wilson provided great retro surf guitar, right on time and target. The frequent use of left-field sound effects sprinkles the songs with splendid surprises.
The song writing, especially lyrics, is always slightly cracked and completely charming. Catchy tunes devoted to poorly planned parties, ruins in Mesopotamia, and making love in strobe light are delivered without irony; no matter how absurd the subject it all seems to make sense when the B-52's do it. As good as these individual contributions are, it is the collective vibe and sensibility that sends this group over the top, their Own, Private I Don't Know is recognizable from 100 paces.
While several anthology CDs are currently available, this one shines most brightly. I was considering the 2-CD compilation, Nude On The Moon, but decided against it after learning about the alternate mixes, etc. Time Capsule: Songs For A Future Generation has the absolute requisite B-52's hits you can't live without, and plenty more besides. Nice to know that future generations will have quality neo-absurdist surf-guitar dance party music to enjoy - they'll need it.
summer of love.......2006-04-17
This is worth picking up for the remix "Summer of Love" alone. Much like another song based on the hot season - Don Henley's "Boys of Summer" - the track is fast-paced yet has a haunted, melancholy feel to it, as if something is lost forever. Quite a departure from the kitschy party songs the band is known for.

Customer Reviews:
The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra needs a guitar player!.......2006-11-09
Granted, they only need it for one composition (the last one, "The James Bond Theme") but still, without the guitar it's just not the same. Barry didn't compose this one so I suppose it was a bonus and I shouldn't complain, really. The rest of the music on all the CDs is fantastic. Some of the stuff I had heard before without realizing who had composed it. Very enjoyable, to say the least.
Persuaders Theme!.......2006-03-02
Buy it for the Persuaders theme, probably the best TV theme song ever written.
A Variety Of Classics!.......2005-12-06
John Barry has been composing film scores for over forty years and this is only scratching the surface of his productions. Never mind that the entire set is recorded by the Prague Philharmonic; it's pure to Barry's themes. While John Williams compositions ("Star Wars", etc.) are wild and flamboyant and Jerry Goldsmith's (Hoosier's, etc.) are mood pieces, John Barry crosses over all barriers and is amazingly diverse. Barry has recorded most of the exciting James Bond themes, melodramatic classics like "The Lion In Winter' and moody theme hits like "Midnight Cowboy". He also tugs at the heartstrings with compositions from, "Somewhere In Time", "Frances" and "Out Of Africa". He varies his themes for all types of films and few composers capture it so well.
There is over four hours of music in this set with a colorful and informative booklet.
Incredible Barry Collection.......2004-03-11
Any fan of movies will absolutley love this collection. Being a movie buff I couldn't wait to get this boxed set. Knowing Barry from all the James Bond movies, I did not realize his involvement with so many others. The orchestra is magnificent in all these themes. I'm listening to "High Road to China" right now and I'm drifting in the clouds in a Tiger Moth with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong. If you are familiar with a movie it will definitely have you seeing it again, if not the scores are still beautiful. Any fan of classical music will be pleased as well. Travellers will defintitely enjoy it for a long drive. I know from when I use to travel that music like this made the miles float by faster. I highly recommend these four CDs even if you just know a handful of the songs.

Customer Reviews:
If you've come this far, you're not going to be disappointed........2007-04-02
It's a testament to Matthew Sweet's songwriting ability that this is a best-of that misses so many of his highs. In fact, his albums also miss some of his highs. Like many Sweet fans, this reviewer's favorite (and unfortunately omitted here) tracks include the soundtrack contributions such as "Happiness" (Kids in the Hall: Brain Candy) and "Farther Down" (Can't Hardly Wait).
This disc is, however, ideal for a casually interested fan of excellent power pop that owes something to the Beatles, Beach Boys and Byrds, as well as Television (Richard Lloyd is a frequent contributor to Sweet's songs), Neil Young, Big Star, R.E.M. and other more guitar-heavy and "crunchy" and/or "twangy" alt-rock power-pop acts.
"Girlfriend", "Sick of Myself", "Time Capsule", "I've Been Waiting", and "Where You Get Love" simply had to be included, and their appearance here make the disc worth the price alone. Yes, sadly, "Winona" and "Evangeline" were omitted, but Girlfriend, from which those two songs originate, is an album also worth it's price (and, in fact, an even more enjoyable musical experience, albeit demanding more time to reveal its true worth), meaning it's more lucrative to spread the disc space around more evenly across all five of Matthew Sweet's albums from the '90s, so that casual fans can get a taste of each album's offerings, in a more quickly digestible manner.
On that level, this compilation succeeds extraordinarily well. It's just that his best work doesn't fit into a mere eighty minutes, especially when some of his best songs, for whatever reason, don't even make it to albums or even those soundtracks (like "Strange Faces", a beautiful home-recorded piano ballad only found in demo form). This disc is also just a ridiculously enjoyable listen for fans of said guitar-heavy (and sometimes piano-based) power-pop/alt-rock. Only die-hard fans lament the omission of tracks like "Come to California", "In Too Deep", "Reaching Out" and the like. Casual fans who've never heard these songs and don't want to waste too much money on more than one disc shouldn't be disappointed with the music that is actually included.
A caveat: If your lyrical tastes are more geared towards, say, James Mercer (Shins) style oblique and nearly indecipherable poetry, Matthew Sweet's simpler (and for this reviewer's money, more charming) lyrics may not be for you. That said, his unpretentious lyrics can still frequently (especially on these tracks) lay bare stunningly honest emotion and/or fun conceits that play very well against the downright filthy-fun foil of the lead guitar of the excellent Richard Lloyd, Robert Quine and Pete Phillips.
Another caveat: Don't be surprised if, like me, you end up ravenously devouring everything else of his, eventually rendering this purchase practically redundant. In fact, Mr. Sweet's Girlfriend is one of my "desert island" albums, along with R.E.M.'s Murmur, Pixies' Doolittle, The Beatles' Revolver and Television's Marquee Moon. Kimi, Altered Beast and In Reverse are ridiculously awesome, too...

flashes of brilliance, but something is missing..........2006-04-04
A lot of music fans have mused over why Matthew Sweet did not achieve greater success with the masses despite his obvious ability to write very catchy songs. "Sick of Myself" single-handedly rejuvenated my faith in the power of pop music at a time when pop seemed to have exhausted its possibilities. But in retrospect Sweet simply wasn't a very marketable commodity for the music industry, and on top of that his vocals and lyrics somehow didn't grab people. Its not that he doesn't sing with passion or feeling, but somehow the words seem to get lost in the mix. Perhaps its a production thing; regardless, the vocals on a MS album always seem to be secondary to the music and that is a no-no for any great singer-songwriter. There are some truly impressive (albeit derivative) stuff here: "What Matters" is in my opinion the greatest Byrds song never written, "Hide" is a beautiful piano ballad that wouldn't seem out of place on Badfinger compilation, "If Time Permits" has some of the most beautiful chorus harmonies not written by Brian Wilson, etc. etc. "I've Been Waiting" works well in combining catchy melody with plaintive adolescent desire, and "Girlfriend" is for the most part a great rocker. However, after the relatively simple production of Girlfriend, his later albums got bogged down in an attempt to recreate a "wall of sound" feeling, which quite frankly doesn't really work unless you're Phil Spector. Not much here can be completely discounted and the new songs fit in quite well (although I probably would have included "Evangeline" at the expense of "Ready"). Despite the undeniable quality of the music there is nothing life-changing here and ultimately great music must at least have the semblance of being life-changing. Still heartily recommended for fans of catchy, melodic pop-rock.
Some Pleasing Material On This CD.......2005-07-31
I first heard Matthew Sweet in the early nineties when 'Sick Of Myself' was getting some airplay over here in Australia. I liked the song so I went out and bought '100% Fun' on cassette. I enjoyed some of the songs, didn't like some others. So instead of buying it on CD I bought this 'Best Of' instead. My opinion of this album is the same as for '100% Fun'. Although most of the tracks are different from '100% Fun' there are only some songs I like enough to keep listening to. The rest aren't really that good. The tracks I truly enjoy are Sick Of Myself, We're The Same, If Time Permits and So Far. I guess it's not too bad to use as background music while you're doing something else (like writing album reviews!). The more attention you pay to the music the worse the songs sound, besides the few good ones. Matthew Sweet is certainly capable of writing good songs, just not enough of them.
Huge Sweet Fan...What a Great Album!.......2004-06-22
It's so nice having most of Matthew's best stuff on ONE CD. That's not to dismiss the rest of the songs that didn't make it. Still, I absolutely LOVE "Ready" & hadn't heard it before this album. (I know, some Sweet fan, huh?) "Where You Get Love" is amazing as I've also heard a live version of this one & it only gets better.
Don't wait another minute before picking up this album. You won't be disappointed! (unless you were wanting mushy gooshy bubblegum pop or death metal)

Absolutely Fantastic Music by "The B-52's"!.......2005-11-06
In 1998, the rock band from Athens, GA known as "The B-52's" released a greatest-hits album entitled "Time Capsule: Songs For A Future Generation", which was re-released in 2004 under the title "Time Capsule: Greatest Hits". Spanning the years 1979 to 1992, this album includes songs from all seven previous albums released by "The B-52's", including their 1979 self-titled album, "Wild Planet" (1980), "Mesopotamia" (1982), "Whammy!" (1983), "Bouncing Off the Satellites" (1986), "Cosmic Thing" (1989) and "Good Stuff" (1992). This album also included two new songs recorded in 1998: "Debbie" and "Hallucinating Pluto" for a grand total of 18 fantastic songs! My ratings for each of the album's songs are listed below:
1. "Planet Claire" (5+, from "The B-52's", 1979).
2. "52 Girls" (5, from "The B-52's", 1979).

9. "Song For A Future Generation" (5+, "Whammy!", 1983).
10. "Summer Of Love (Original Unreleased Mix)" (5+, different mix from the song released on "Bouncing Off the Satellites", 1986).
11. "Channel Z" (5+, "Cosmic Thing", 1989).
12. "Deadbeat Club" (5+, "Cosmic Thing", 1989).
13. "Love Shack" (5+, "Cosmic Thing", 1989).
14. "Roam" (5+, "Cosmic Thing", 1989).
15. "Good Stuff", (5, "Good Stuff", 1992).
16. "Is That You Mo-Dean?", (5, "Good Stuff", 1992).
17. "Debbie" (5+, 1998).
18. "Hallucinating Pluto" (5, 1998).
Overall, I rate the album "Time Capsule: Greatest Hits" by "The B-52's" with a resounding 5 out of 5 stars and highly recommend it to anyone that loves fantastically fun music! I also can't wait to hear the new album that "The B-52's" are reportedly working on for a release sometime in 2006. Many thanks go to the individual members of "The B-52's": Kate Pierson, Cindy Wilson, Ricky Wilson (1953-1985), Fred Schneider and Keith Strickland!

This celebrated album is a true masterpiece. Chris Bowden recently headlined the London Jazz Festival. This is his groundbreaking first album that includes a full orchestra, choir, electronics and Bowden's sax playing. This album has since been sited by a number of artists as a cornerstone in modern music and currently groups such as The Heritage Ensemble and Heart and Soul Orchestra are heavily influenced by this music. As well as the 15-min epic `Epsilon' we also have `Mothers and Daughters now Mothers', `Telescopic' and `Time Capsule'. Amazing!
Customer Reviews:
Deep soul for the 90s and beyond..........1998-08-24
An intriguing mix of chamber-style strings, post-funk drums, and virtuoso double bass. The album flows well, in and out of various themes, and builds to a cosmic crescendo. Not as much sax pyrotechnics as I was expecting from Chris, but his skill and playfulness still shine. Definitely a unique statement and something that will stay on my listening list for a long time. What stands out for me is not the musicianship as such, more the atmosphere it evokes: a kind of empty longing that somehow feels very good.

VIVA LES BEEHIVES!.......2000-02-23
The B-52s have acquired a great number of allies in their time, and this CD reflects the huge amount of love for their work that exists out there... these re-mixes are the perfect gift for any fan who loves both the B-52s and electronic music. I am however IN COMPLETE DISAGREEMENT with the first review. The Moby remix of "Good Stuff" is a brilliant example of mid-90s techno. OLD SCHOOL! You can forget about the 12" mix of "Love Shack". Anyways, this CD will facilitate yet another generation's introduction to these masters a funky-kitschy-avant-garde.
fun remixes..........1999-06-06
This remix EP from the B-52's is way above par. The Jason Nevins remix of "Hallucinating Pluto" is a fun journey through "laser beams"... The Edge Factor Club Mix of "Debbie" is wonderful as well. The 12" mix of Love Shack is a must-have for any party. The only downfall to this cd is the horrible Scottische Mix of "Good Stuff" done by Moby. Just Brutal.
an odd noise.......1999-01-28
Apart from the 12" mix of Love Shack - which is this cd's killer - this is a pretty savage restructuring of the B-52s sound. It's puzzling to think who this will appeal to, as the sound is so aggressively contemporary, and a lot of 52 fans (I suspect) are no longer in the first flush of youth (so to speak). Like the previous reviewer says, don't get this if you're wanting the original thing, but by all means give this a listen.
This ROCKS! It's just plain fun!.......1998-09-12
If you like the B-52's you'll want this CD. There are some great remixes on here, and they just fit the band so well. Front to back fun. A very enjoyable listen.
But, this shouldn't be a pick for a first-time CD from the band. This is incredible fun only if you know the band. If you don't, then it's gonna sound a lot like "yet another" album of dance tracks.

B-52's - 'Time Capsule-Mixes:Sumer Of Love '98' (Warner Bros.).......2006-10-01
Five track CD single, that features two remixes each of "Summer Of Love" and "Roam" which are okay. I think I like this CD's remix of "Planet Claire" the best, very electronic. A decent CD single release, but pretty much for the B-52's die hard fans.
if only Ricky could hear this..........1999-02-02
The Francois K mix of Planet Claire is an instant classic, although - like most of the other mixes - it dispenses with much of the original sound, excepting the vocals. Don't consider this unless you're familiar with the originals, because it won't make much sense. Still great fun, but it would have been interesting to hear remixes of some of their lesser known, more experimental stuff. And remixes that weren't so slavishly contemporary - I mean, Jason Nevins??? Nothing too camp about him!

Tripping Daisy - 'Time Capsule' (Island) EP.......2005-06-05
Maybe the best EP I've ever had to my name. Was released between the CD's '...Elastic Firecracker' and 'Jesus Hits...'.Remember when I first got this EP,I was SO thrilled because I noticed it had the track "Creature" on it.Not knowing about this song drove me nuts for a bit.I saw Tripping Daisy play the previous Halloween and after the show,I snatched a copy of the setlist and could never find this tune on any of their CD's at THAT time.I touched base with the band and they told me this song was their tour opener as it was unreleased 'til 'Time...' came out.A couple of the other cuts here I liked were "I'm A Fish" and "Blue Train".I kept an eye open for any bootleg that might be available of this post grunge band's recent tours but no luck whatsoever.Too bad I only got to experience them live once,as they were a lot of fun to catch on the concert trail.Line-up:Tim DeLaughter-guitar&vocals,Wes Berggren(R.I.P.)-guitar,Mark Pirro-bass and Mitch Marine-drums.Might appeal to some fans of Silverchair,Hole,Seven Mary Three and Bush.Recommended.
This c.d. Rocks it kicks ass no lie........1998-06-22
This c.d. is one of the best c.ds that you can buy. It's perfect for all types of differnt music like alterntive, mellow and easy listing just to name a few. It's great for partys or just listing to it on your disk man or walkman. I have three copies of Tripping daisy cd. Just in case some one wants to use it or if I take one cd on with me anywhere. This group and cd, will make you fell good when you are down or if you are felling chipper. It the best try it and even if your parents are very harsh on you about bad influnces of music on you, they will a prove of this cd and this group. When you listen to this, I hate to say (I told you so).
Worked good to hold fans over until next full lenth album.......1998-06-15
A nice collection of songs from various times in the band's history. They do an okay cover of Public Image Ltd.'s song Rise, but it's not the best (then again, neither was the original version). Creature is another fairly long song (and a pretty good one at that--probably my favorite off this album). Blue Train is another good one from the very early days of the band. One very unique thing about this album is the hidden track on it. While most bands put their hidden track at the end of an album, these guys stuck theirs at the beginning. You see, when you hit the play button to start the first track, you have to then hold down the rewind button until the display shows that you've gone roughly 9 minutes back. A rather humorous song I thought, and impressive the way they hid it like that.
Overall, a really good album. As I said before, "It only gets better in time". I'm sure many fans will agree when they hear Tripping Daisy's next full length album, "Jesus Hits Like The Atom Bomb".

WOW.......2000-07-11
FOR 10 BUCKS OWN A PEICE OF LISTENING HISTORY I USE SOME OF THIS ON MY ANSWERING MACHINE IT REALLY THROWS PEOPLE OFF
A Quick Trip Through the Twentieth Century.......2000-01-31
This is a remarkable compilation of very brief audio clips of speeches and historic news events from throughout the 20th century, intermixed with one full-length song from each era. The sound quality of the songs is good (considering age) and the choice of songs is excellent. I know this sounds like an odd combination, but it works. The songs capture the mood of each era perfectly and keep the audio clips from becoming boring. The audio clips are generally very brief, so if you don't follow along in the provided book, and know a little about 20th century history, you may miss the significance of many tracks. Overall, a great CD for those interested in history, politics or old music.
