5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Sampler, and the Best Place to Start.......2006-01-24

If you're unfamiliar with Nyman and want a broad overview of his best work, I'd start here. I actually WORE OUT a copy of this and recently bought another. When it arrived, I played it over and over-- Nyman's almost creepily insistent and precise compositions will appeal to those who appreciate minimalism and repetition in the music of other composers such as John Adams, Steve Reich, Michael Torke, and Philip Glass.

5 out of 5 stars Michael Nyman RULES !.......2004-07-22

I thought there was nothing beyond Philip Glass, Steve Reich or John Adams. Suddenly, for some strange reason I bought this CD. It far exceeded my expectations.

Nyman is a excelent composer, his music is fast-paced, joyful and delicious.

I recomend this CD for anyone who is looking for a great minimalist composer.

5 out of 5 stars Sensations mosaic.......2004-03-31

Today I was talking with a friend about the rainbow of feelings "Memorial" awakes in my mind. I consider this song like the exact opposite of easy-listening music, a feeling catalyst, a vehicle that can raise you to the sky and gradually take you to the deepest level in hell. As derrotista said, it is perfect to describe the meaning of a word like "death", but more than that, with an inevitability emphasis.

The rest of the compilation also honors the meaning of intensity. No one song in this disc will let your attention go away from the sensations mosaic this record constructs. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Good start to meet Nyman.......2004-03-05

I was a great enthusiast of new age and minimalist music in the early 90's, when I was still a teenager. I had this as one of my favourite albums and today I consider it one of my best purchases.

Ten years later, Nyman is recognised as one of the biggest composers of late XXth century. In part with the astonishing soundtrack of "The Piano". But I think this "Essential" album has more to offer to you.

Of course, my favourite is "Memorial". It is the most tragic music I have ever listened. It's a perfect track to describe what a word like "death" can mean. "Miserere Paraphrase" is the definition of another simple word: "pain".

Some other tracks are the purity of minimalism: "Knowing the Ropes", "Chasing Sheep is best left to Shepherds", "Wheelbarrow Walk" and "The Garden is Becoming a Robe Room" are of my favourites.

Why am I not giving it five stars? The reason: "Prospero's Books: Miranda". It is a bad way to end this album. Almost the whole album is devoted to Greenaway films: "The Draughtsman Contract", "The Cook, the Thief, his Wife and her Lover", "A Zed and Two Noughts" and "Drowning by Numbers" and the referred "Prospero's Books". The only track not belonging to a film is Stroking-Synchronising, from "Water Dances" album. This is a tremendous composition and should be the great finale for this album. "Miranda" is a dull and not creative composition, which Nyman doesn't have to be proud of it: it is too complex, too changing and breaks with the minimalist spirit. I also think the soprano and the mezzo don't play a "serious" part.

But of course, it has an honour place in my discography.

2 out of 5 stars The Emperor's New Music.......2002-04-11

A lot of people seem to love this guy and I just don't see why. I find it dull, intellectual (in the most pejorative sense) and defines what's wrong with a lot of "post-modernism" in music today. This guy doesn't write tunes as much as he writes concepts of tunes. The music fails to connect on an emotional level and fails to be interesting enough in purely intellectual terms to compensate for it's emotional hollowness. His craft seems a bit lacking too- filled with the trappings of minimalism without the basic musical values such as memorable melodies, logical harmony and innovative form that make a composer such as John Adams worth listening to. His often odd choices of orchestration tend to strike one as merely grotesque rather than imaginative. I'm afraid that Michael Nyman is a musical poseur and it's a shame that so many people have bought into his brand of soulless artifice.
Not recommended.

5 out of 5 stars No lapses in this music.......2007-07-13

It probably only turns people off when a reviewer uses a word like "transcendent" to describe a CD, but it is difficult for me to find words to describe the strange beauty of this music. Parker has invented a truly unique (not just "unusual," but singular) technique of playing the solo saxophone, which sounds more like a flock of birds or woodwind choir than a single instrument. The present disk uses overtracking so that the texture becomes denser and richer, filling up your room with sound. The amazing thing about the recording is that, since all the tracks were improvised, in order to overdub parts, he had to memorize the first recorded improvisation to add the second and third parts... there was no musical score for him to work from. Yet, each piece sounds like an organic whole.

Although in some obvious sense, the music is "avante garde," it is by no means difficult to listen to. Instead, you may find it difficult to have it on while doing anything else, because the amazing sounds and raw beauty keep drawing you back to listen to it instead of doing whatever you are supposed to be doing.

5 out of 5 stars Evan Parker and Evan Parker.......2006-10-14

Evan Parker's first recording for John Zorn's Tzadik label is a solo record with a twist. Half the cuts feature EP alone, which is scarcely believable given that his circular breathing and multiphonics can produce the sound of what sounds like an entire flock of birds. The other half, which alternate from Track 1 on, the odd tracks, feature two Evan Parkers, one overdubbed, soloing over an original solo line. These recordings were not made in one session, but are rather collected from a several-year period, all from a particularly superb recording studio in London.

Overall, the tempos are slower and the tone is more subdued than the highest energy recordings of the Parker/Guy/Lytton trio from the 1990s, or earlier solo EP recordings such as CONIC SECTIONS or PROCESS & REALITY. But the term "subdued" is relative -- this is intense, abstract music which will certainly not appeal to the ordinary person. If you are an extraordinary person, open to mind and ear-bending saxophone playing, then by all means check out this latest release by the incomparable Evan Parker!

5 out of 5 stars SUPERIOR AUDIO TO THE JAPAN '07 MINI-SLEEVE RELEASE.......2007-06-11

I just received the twelve disc Japan mini-sleeve Steve Hackett set, released on May 30th.

As I intended to replace all of my jewel-cased SH CD's, I sat down with new set and painstakingly A/B'd the audio on each disc against the most recent jewel box version of each title.

I'm glad I did. Although all of the other eleven discs in the '07 'sleeve set sonically match to the most up-to-date remasters, the '07 Japan version of "Time Lapse" does not.

This '01 Camino jewel-case remastered release has a superior-sounding master compared to the 'sleeve edition.

I'm glad I checked, before I divested the better disc.

Just goes to show; never assume anything.

4 out of 5 stars Nice album from 1992.......2005-12-31

FOR SOME REASON, ALL THE REVIEWS BELOW ARE FOR THE LIVE CD TIME LAPSE AND NOT FOR GUITAR NOIR.

This CD was originally released in 1992 and was 56 minutes long. It was later released as a budget double CD along with the acoustic live album, There Are Many Sides to the Night. Both of those are out of print and only available used. The current version of this CD includes for bonus tracks and is 75 minutes long.

The bonus tracks on this CD are worthless and actually make the CD worse. They are just demo versions of four of the songs already on the CD. They are inferior versions of the tracks.

Other than the bonus tracks, this is a very nice CD from Hackett. It starts out a little weak, with one of Hackett's typical instrumentals. It isn't bad, but it is basically the same thing he has done for 20 years. The rest of the album are some interesting songs with some great playing.

The middle part of the CD is especially good, with There Are Many Sides to the Night, Dark As A Grave and Lost in Your Eyes.

I think this CD is much better than many of Hackett's albums from the late seventies and early eighties.

5 out of 5 stars A Live Gem.......2002-10-12

Great live versions of some of Steve Hackett's best work, the best of which are "Camino Royale" and the instrumental "Jacuzzi." This album also introduces another classic Hackett instrumental, "Depth Charge." Longtime fans already have this album. New fans should join them soon.

4 out of 5 stars A live "greatest hits" look at Hackett's solo career.......2002-06-08

This live album would be a good introduction to ex-Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett's solo career. Half was recorded in 1981 and half in 1990. Hackett's best solo work had sort of an uber-Genesis sound--he built a wall of sound from keyboards and then sliced through it with a wailing guitar. Most of Hackett's "greatest hits" are here: "Spectral Mornings", "Every Day", "The Steppes", and "Ace of Wands". The only missing track that really SHOULD be here is "Narnia". Only three of the 14 tracks include vocals, and one of those, "Hope I Don't Wake", is the weakest track here. These renditions don't vary much from the studio versions; one that does is a run through the first half of Genesis' "In That Quiet Earth", with extended guitar, synthesizer, and flute solos. There seem to be some overdubs (on "Ace of Wands", Hackett's brother John can't possibly switch from rhythm guitar to flute that quickly). Overall, this is a very listenable album.

4 out of 5 stars Delivering the Goods.......2000-11-02

A major question about any band is weather they can deliver the goods in concert. Listening to Hackett's albums, one is overwhelmed by his creative use of recording technology. But can the power of these recordings, made with all the advantages of a studio, be translated into a live environment? Time Lapse answers this question with an emphatic yes.

A document of two concerts seperated by ten years, Time Lapse presents a picture of Steve Hackett that is saturated with the energy and immediacy of a good performance. The live versions of these songs acutally succeed at improving on the studio material. All of Hackett's albums from 1975 to 1982 are represented here. Voyage of the Acolyte, Spectral Mornings and Defector are the ones most heavily drawn from. Anyone looking for materiel from Till We Have Faces, GTR or either of the acoustic albums (Bay of Kings and Momentum) will be dissapointed, as will fans of his '90s era albums. That being said, the songs that are included are some of his best. Camino Royale is the first number, an odd one to use as an opener, but then again no one ever accused Steve Hackett of being predictable. In That Quiet Earth is also included. This is part of three connected songs on the Genesis album Wind and Wuthering. I tend to think that these three songs should be listened to together. One of the many high points is Depth Charge, a short jam that does not exist on any other album. It sounds like something Hackett and his band came up with during sound checks. Hope I Don't Wake is wonderfully executed, while I happen to prefer the studio verson of Spectral Mornings. The feel of a concert hall is evident throughout these recordings. You can almost hear the sound expanding to fill the arena; and none of the subtlety of Hackett's music is lost. If there was some overdubbing added, you can hardly be dissapointed. After all, this isn't a bootleg recording and it all blends together seamlessly. The musicianship on this one is first rate, with the drums comming across better than they ever did on any studio release. The one disadvantage is that the continuity of his studio albums is missing. The songs on Hackett's albums tend to blend together and form a continuous whole. Oftentimes a kind of story is being told. This sort of feeling cannot be replicated when various songs from various albums are jumbled together.

I would recommend this album both to those looking for an introduction to Steve Hackett as well as fans who would like to check out his live sound. However I would advise against listening to it from beggining to end. All the heavyosity might get to be a little too much to handle. Time Lapse is like a large serving of very rich food. Small bites will do just fine.

4 out of 5 stars Live CD by Legendary ex-Genesis Guitarist.......2003-02-19

I've been a big fan of Genesis for twenty years now - particularly of the Peter Gabriel era. Also, my favorite albums after Phil Collins took over the vocals were "A Trick Of The Tail", "Wind & Wuthering" and the live "Seconds Out". I suppose it's no coincidence that my favorite Genesis tracks featured Steve Hackett on lead guitar.

Also, in the mid-1980's, I bought the first couple of Steve Hackett solo albums but didn't really care for them at the time. Recently, I bought his CD "Genesis Files" which collects a number of his re-recordings of such tracks as "Watcher Of The Skies", "Firth Of Fifth", and "Fountain Of Salmacis", plus a number of other songs in the same vein. I was amazed and delighted with these songs and finally realized what a huge talent that Hackett really is.

My second Hackett CD purchase is this live disc, recorded at concerts in 1981 and 1990. Although I was somewhat disappointed that only one Genesis track is included (a very powerful version of the instrumental "In That Quiet Earth" - first released on 1977's "Wind & Wuthering" - that ends much too soon), I was delighted with many of the other songs. Two of my favorites are "Camino Royale" and "The Steppes".

I highly recommend this CD to old-time Genesis fans; it's a great introduction to Hackett's solo work.

Hackett has delivered one of the most original ways of playing guitar. When you hear Fountain of Salmacis included in the remasterd version of GENESIS: Three side live and Everyday in Time Lapse you have to reconogize that Hackett is one of the master of the progressive rock.

3 out of 5 stars Not worth it.......2002-02-09

I am a huge fan of Steve Hackett and I was very excited when this live album was first released. Although it is a great selection of his works, and is very representative of his style and playing abilities, the problem is that he plays almost every song "straight," i.e. just as it was recorded in the original studio version. Except for "Camino Royale" and maybe a couple of other tracks, each song is played practically "note for note," with very little variation. This is disappointing because the reason many of us buy live recordings is to hear the difference from the studio versions. It's also somewhat disappointing that this is a "selection" of live tunes taken from different concerts. I would have rather heard one, continuous, uninterrupted concert, rather than tunes which were "selected" just because of their "polished" nature. I would recommend almost any of Steve Hackett's other recordings over this one.

"The acoustic guitar is a small orchestra housing other instruments," says former Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett. "Pianos, cellos and harps are hidden away beneath it." Steve definitely proves his point with his 1983 acoustic masterwork, "Bay Of Kings." This is an exquisitely gorgeous album, with Steve working his magic touch on acoustic guitar and the occasional dash of keyboard, while brother John Hackett guest stars on flute. Pieces such as the title track, "Kim," "Second Chance," Steve's old Genesis fave "Horizons," and "The Barren Land" simply sparkle. This is wonderfully soothing music, the perfect disc to play for relaxing, or for that all-important quality time with your special someone. "Bay Of Kings" is a marvelous Steve Hackett album.

        4 out of 5 stars A change of pace.......2005-06-13

I have the original 1983 UK LP on Lamborghini Records (a now-defunct indie of no known relation to the Italian luxury motorcar). It has a nude cover painted by Steve's artist wife Kim Poor, but she did a new cover of him for the CD. Of course, I don't have any bonuses on mine! Maybe I'll get this edition. We'll see.
Old tracks like "Kim" and "Horizons" are redone, plus new tracks that are all instrumental and "Unplugged" classical guitar (something Randy Rhoads would be doing if he were still alive), after several prog-rock releases for Charisma. Even now, he's doing an acoustic tour in the EU, and it may feature what you get on this album.

        4 out of 5 stars Classical Genius.......2005-01-12

A beautifully produced album of acoustic pieces, including Kim from "Please Don't Touch". Steve had hinted at his acoustic prowess as long ago as "Horizons" with Genesis, but this was his first album (I believe), of all acoustic/classical material. It includes a number of gems, including the wonderful Tales From The Riverbank from the children's show, which I remember fondly from childhood. Steve followed this with "Momentum" which is equally as good. Thank you Steve and keep gracing us with your mixture of acoustic and rock material.

5 out of 5 stars A melange of acoustic beauty.......2004-05-29

Mr. Hackett virtuosity and compostion skills are on full display. From the opening with its beautiful Brazillian feel
to a reworking of the hymn like Kim, to the wonderful dissonant sound of Petropolis. This is a guitar, dare I say, masterpiece.
The entire work has a watery sound, obviously by design.
But it is clear enough to present themes and up neck work.
Very good listen, I highly recommend

3 out of 5 stars NOT THE REMASTER.......2007-06-11

I just received the twelve disc Japan mini-sleeve Steve Hackett set, released on May 30th.

As I intended to replace all of my jewel-cased SH CD's, I sat down with new set and painstakingly A/B'd the audio on each disc against the most recent jewel box version of each title.

I'm glad I did. Although all of the other eleven discs in the '07 'sleeve set sonically match to the most up-to-date remasters, this CD does not.

The '01 Camino jewel-case remastered release has a superior-sounding master compared to this 'sleeve edition.

I'm glad I checked, before I divested the better disc.

Just goes to show; never assume anything.
