What can you say, really? When you get right down to it, it's the greatest band in the history of pop music, the most influential, the best writers, and whatever other superlatives you can think of. Given their phenomenal output, and their huge chart success, it's no surprise that this second volume proves every bit as rich as the first. John, Paul, George, and Ringo had that rare chemistry that moved musical mountains, with more great songs than many people have had hot dinners, and they're still affecting the course of popular music. Thirty years later, all the paths they hinted at have yet to be explored, which is about as high a testament as can be given. --Chris Nickson
Customer Reviews:
Past masters.......2007-06-27
I bought this for one song, "Rain," which is not available on any other U-S release, at least to my knowledge. It's simply the best drumming by Ringo Starr!
The Inner Light.......2007-04-30
Most of the songs on this disc have always been available on LP. But this disc contains two songs that were never on any LP. You Know My Name (Look Up the Number) is an interesting novelty piece, but basically a throw-away. The Inner Light, on the other hand, is a great Harrison song.
The Inner Light is the main reason to buy this disc.
Also, if you feel that it is essential to have cd versions of great Beatles songs like Hey Jude and Rain, this is a good disc to have.
My disc is broken. It won't play Hey Jude. So I have to take away one star in my rating. Otherwise, this is a five star disc. I don't blame The Beatles for my defective cd, but my rating system is tough. I don't give five stars easily.

The Ultimate Beatles Sampler! .......2007-03-05
If I had to pick my single favorite Beatles compilation album, it would not be 1, the Red or Blue albums, or any of the other sliced-and-diced Beatles packages of the last thirty years; it would be this odd-ball compilation.
Every song on this disc is a pure pleasure to listen to, and the scope and artistry of these pieces are amazing! The way the Beatles mined such divers sources as pop, folk, jazz, metal, traditional Indian, gospel, blues, acid-rock, classical and comedy is utterly mind-boggling! I can't see how you could possibly be disappointed with this.
Like the 1st, an essential.......2007-02-09
Okay, so I could've done without Harrison's dated, Indian-influenced toss-off b-side The Inner Light. And the four new Yellow Submarine songs (Hey Bulldog; It's All Too Much; Only a Northern Song; All Together Now) would've been appreciated. Still, this is an essential CD to round out your Beatles collection, especially if you've got all 13 studio albums, but don't have (or want) to buy any of the greatest-hits albums to get Hey Jude and such. All of the Beatles' single-only tracks from the day are included here: the aforementioned Hey Jude (and its equally brilliant b-side Revolution, a hardrocker that blows most other rockers off the map): Day Tripper/We Can Work It Out; Paperback Writer/Rain; Lady Madonna/The Inner Light; Hey Jude/Revolution; Get Back/Don't Let Me Down; The Ballad of John and Yoko/Old Brown Shoe and Let It Be (the non-Spector mix)/You Know My Name (Look Up the Number), seven classic singles, are represented here, as is the "wildlife" version of Across the Universe, which admittedly isn't as good as the de-Spectorized take on Let It Be... Naked. Fourteen of these fifteen are indespensible, even the silly You Know My Name (Look Up the Number), an irresistably strange mutlipart experiment. Some of their greatest ballads (Hey Jude; Let It Be; Don't Let Me Down; We Can Work It Out), but there are also some of their best hard rockers: if someone tells you the Beatles couldn't rock out, play them Day Tripper; Paperback Writer; Rain; Revolution and the brassy Lady Madonna, all crunchy rockers with Paul playing ridiculously complex bass. One last note on Rain: if any Beatles number is underrated, it's this one. Love that tune, sort of a cousin to Tomorrow Never Knows that would've fit perfectly on Revolver. Be sure to have this!!
Why don't the Rolling Stones or the Who have collections like these? Both bands recorded some quality single-only material that is now fairly hard to find, except through greatest-hits albums.

Although they were probably the band that most transformed rock from a singles medium to an album-oriented form, the Beatles also released many singles and EP tracks that never made it onto albums. In the U.S., Capitol turned the group's early LPs, through Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, into compilations, more or less, throwing the hit singles onto the vinyl to augment the album tracks. When the label later released the U.K. albums on CD, it posed a problem: What to do with the non-LP singles? Past Masters, Volume 1 compiles 18 of those singles, including some of their best-known tracks, running from "Love Me Do," "She Love You," "I Want to Hold Your Hand," and "This Boy" to "I Feel Fine" and Paul's homage to Little Richard, "I'm Down." Essential stuff. --Bill Holdship

Fab - ulous!!!.......2007-05-15
Great collection. If you love the Fab Four as I do, buy this disc.
A must have!.......2007-02-21
It brings back so many memories! It is great to have all of these songs in one collection. I recommend it to any Beatle lover.
Like the 2nd, an essential.......2007-02-09
Some of the Beatles' best cuts were regulated to non-LP b-sides (or at least are now ever since the US albums were dropped from the market in favor of the UK ones), and the best of those (other than Rain and Revolution, found on Volume 2) can be found here: This Boy is a superb, R&B-laced original; She's a Woman, a brilliant rockabilly/Elvis throwback (later covered quite nicely by Jeff Beck); I'm Down is relentless rock 'n' roll. You also get a straight reissue of the Long Tall Sally EP: Long Tall Sally itself and I Call Your Name are two bare essentials, both charged-up, three-chord rock with Lennon's powerful vocals. The other two tracks from that EP (Slow Down, with an interesting guitar solo; Matchbox) are nothing special but coulda been worse. Then there are the classic #1's from the early days that didn't make it onto an LP: From Me to You; She Loves You; I Want to Hold Your Hand and I Feel Fine are presented in their original versions here, while Love Me Do is an alternate version with Ringo (rather than a session drummer) drumming, though it isn't much different than the original, that's no real reason to complain. Bad Boy is an awesome rocker (from the US-only Beatles VI, which doesn't exist on CD unless you shell out $60 for The Capitol Albums, Volume 2) that didn't deserve to disappear. The German-language versions of She Loves You and I Want to Hold Your Hand may seem like padding, but they're fun and interesting, though certainly not perfect or the originals: the only song that doesn't do the job for me is Yes It Is, one of their weakest.
The only way to get several of these tracks other than buying this is through The Capitol Albums boxed sets. So if you don't feel like spending $60 or more, go here for some great rare Beatles!
Why don't the Rolling Stones or the Who have collections like these? Both bands recorded some quality single-only material that is now fairly hard to find, except through greatest-hits albums.
Fills in the void created when these singles were omitted from the original LPs.......2007-01-21
It's well-known that The Beatles ruled the charts for the majority of the 60s and the record company knew the value of their prizes when they released songs as singles (never putting them on LPs), split albums into EPs and releasing different versions of the same album (as was the case with "Revolver," and the beginning of the song "Help!" among many examples).
The two "Past Masters" CDs, to me, fill the void one might feel was created by the omission of the singles from the LPs. The fact that singles such as "Love Me Do," "I Wanna Hold Your Hand," and "She Loves You" were omitted from LPs in the first place seems a bit weird to me - someone born after The Beatles long split up (at least on paper, anyway).
But just thinking about John and Paul cranking out more timeless and poignant songs (separately and together) as opposed to insisting the singles be put on the albums attests to the fact that they are the greatest songwriters of the modern era of music.
Both "Past Masters" are essentials to a Beatles collection. - Donna Di Giacomo
There are better and more interesting samplings.......2006-12-09
These tracks appear to be the A and B sides of 45 rpm and some 33 1/3 rpm LP records that I have tucked away in my closet. Volume One is a very good cross section of The Beatles hits early in their career, along with songs that are (were) rarely heard on the radio, particularly Matchbox (sung by Ringo) which was originally recorded by Carl Perkins, a country rock-a-billy or country rock artist. Yes It Is, is a soulful love song sung (and probably written) by John Lennon. Unique to The Beatles are their early appearances in a night club in Hamburg, Germany thus the two tracks sung in German. What you hear and hopefully enjoy while listening to this CD, is the energy, warmth, passion and diversity that John, George, Paul and Ringo put into each song. There are better, less well known, cuts that show a greater diversity of the Fab Four. But Volume One is a good place to start for a neophyte "The Beatles" fan.

Customer Reviews:
all Christmas,all the Time.......2007-01-10
This two cd offering has almost all my favorites.the classics, not the Rudolph ones. Can't recommend enough.Listen and read Dickens...That's enough Christmas for anyone.
Title makes a big claim, but it absolutely delivers..........2006-12-02
This album provides 2.5 hours of excellent carols, from excellent choirs and soloists, and with great sound. I was worried that a compilation this large, and with such an extravagent title, would be B-side offerings, but that's not the case at all.
This isn't an album if you are looking for something "fresh and new." The arrangements are traditional, and even newer carols are done in a fairly conservative style. But that said, some of the pieces provide the best orchestration and voice arrangement I have ever heard. This is like the pinnacle of the classic English Christmas carol; clean, precise, glorious and celebratory.
Its time to be seasonal.......2005-12-16
This album contains traditional carols performed in a traditional way at the best quality. It is an excellent album to ensure the spirit of christmas is present and to bring the true meaning of christmas back. The double CD selection has all the golden favourites as well as not so wellknown carols to complete a very good christmas album. Merry Christmas to you all!

Album Description
Rick Stone's latest Jazzand release Samba de Novembro features his guitar in solo, duo, trio and quartet settings with two long-time associates; pianist Tardo Hammer and bassist Yosuke Inoue, and the ever-inventive Matt Wilson on drums. The musical personality of each player flourishes in this thoughtfully assembled set of standards and originals. The up-beat title cut "Samba de Novembro" and the pensive "Rain Forest" were inspired by Rick's 1996 South American tour. Richard Rodgers' "My Romance," Vernon Duke's "I Can't Get Started" and Thelonious Monk's "Played Twice" are each given personal interpretations by the trio. Rick's minor key original "Duck, Duck, Blues!" gets its title from the march-like rhythm of its opening solo choruses. On Kenny Werner's "Autumn in Three" the guitar and piano weave a tapestry of sinuous lines in a duo interpretation inspired by a Jackson Pollack painting. Bill Evans' "Song for Helen" is presented here as a solo guitar vignette. The traditional folk tune "Careless Love" gets a new twist in this calypso-like rendition punctuated with interludes of New Orleans-style parade drum. Yosuke Inoue's bass is featured in the trio's arrangement of his own composition "West Side Waltz." The CD finishes with two Stone originals; the upbeat "Blues Enough" and the reflective "In Loving Memory," a ballad dedicated to Ted Dunbar and Attila Zoller and performed as a guitar/piano duet.
Customer Reviews:
One of the best Jazz Guitar albums in recent years.......2005-04-22
If you like Jazz Guitar you are guaranteed to enjoy this CD. The opening track has more than a casual nod to Jim Hall's "Simple Samba" - with some exciting solos by Rick and Tardo Hamer.
I think Rick's version of "My Romance" is itself worth the price of the CD. The way he does the intro is unlike anything I've ever heared. It's a melody line with an improvised counterpoint line, but it almost sounds like a duet between two people. Really innovative.
There is one full solo piece on the album "Song For Helen" where Rick takes a completely different approach. Again, not like anything you've heared before, yet with the whole jazz guitar tradition built in.
Rick's sound is just beautiful. Dark and smooth but punchy and very even. The Comins guitar is not just a beauty on the cover, but it sounds amazing, and Rick used some interesting miking technique to make the pick sounds pretty audible, with a very unique effect.
Of all the tracks that are worth the price of the CD on their own, probably "Autumn in Three" is the most amazing. It's Rick and Tardo Hammer playing a duet that I am almost tempted to say pushes the envelope beyond the Jim Hall/Bill Evans duets, and I don't use that comparison lightly!
There are a lot of other great moments on the CD. Rick's time feel is fantastic. Always rhythmically varied, swinging and always in the pocket at any tempo and he's always going for interesting harmonic ideas rather than licks. A true master of jazz guitar.
