Hugo Alfvén: Symphony No. 1.......2006-08-06
This is wonderful, outstanding music! I would make this recording required listening for anybody familiar with Alfvén's splendid "Midsommarvaka" (Swedish Rhapsody No. 1).
Compelling performances of a great Swedish composer........1999-05-07
Hugo Alfven (1872-1960) is now regarded as a leading Swedish composer, along with Wilhelm Stenhammar. In the past 30 years, prominent conductors such as Neemi Jarvi, Stig Westerberg, Evgeny Svetlanov, Lief Segerstam, & Sakari, advocated their works, especially through recordings. It was Stig Westerberg who was the first to bring works of these important Scandanavian composers from obscurity through the LP recordings. On the debit side, however, many of there chamber & chorus works (including songs) have not made it to the record shelves.
The festival overture is an appealing, nationistic 3/4 metre of a work, almost like a waltz, but with a more specific purpose. It's not a pompous work, but a work with sheer optimism & grandeur, with a fanfare opening suggesting nothing but festivity. It was composed in 1908 for the occasion of the opening of the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm.
The ballet-pantomine "Bergakungen" (The Mountain King (1917-1922)) was based on the legendary story of shepardess who was abducted by a mountain king. With the help of a troll, the lover of the shepardess rescued her from the mountain king. The troll however realized that that he will never win the love of the shepardess, & therefore allowed them to die in a snow storm. This story is as tragic as the Czech fairy tale "The Noon Witch" for which Antonin Dvorak based his symphonic poem upon. The Suite, extractions from the ballet, is in four movements, with memorable themes throughout. The work is imaginative, mystic, & ultimately & immediately compelling. The beginning has a Sibelius' Finlandia touch & has the beauty of a Claude Debussy. The orchestration is personal & individualistic, & those qualities never left the composer for the rest of his prolific & successful career.
The Second of the three Uppsala Rhapsodies (Swedish Rhapsody no. II) was composed by 1907 for the 200th aniversary celebration of the Uppsala University. It's a parallelism to Brahms' Academic overture of 1881, with school song themes embetted throughout. It's an attractive, if not, a plain work that is appreciative.
The main item of this compact disc is the First Symphony in F minor of 1897 in four movements. The first is has a grim, slow, beginning. It gathers pace, but with no optimism, but with seriousness, ending on a tragic note. The Andante is meditative & laid back, with the idiom sounding somwhat modernistic. The Scherzando third movement is joyful, youthful, & somewhat pastorale, reminding one of Edvard Grieg. The finale has a Beethovenian like opening. Its' pace quickens with both festivity & youthful optimism. The middle section is memorable & charming before the movement picks up where it left off. Although somewhat discursive & episodic, the movement has it appeals nevertheless & neatly fits into the entire scheme of the symphony.
The performances of these works are no more or no less authoritative & compelling than those of Stig Westerberg, Jarvi, or Svetlanov. Although Niklas Willen & the Royal Scottish National Orchestra were slower in pace in Alfven's First symphony, most especially in the first movement, they performed the work, with other works on the disc, with passion, conviction, and with perfect discipline. Should you decide to go for the symphony, you can opt for any recordings currently available, including this one under Naxos (and under a budget-price). You will not be disapointed, I promise.
Recommended with a big heart.

Perpålsa.......2006-12-11
This is an absolutely amazing album. Especially given that none of it is in English. Incredible instruments, gorgeous leading vocals.. Truly breath-taking sound.
When it is translated to English, it tells folklore-esque stories (leave it to the Scandinavians for that).
Lumsk is different from any artist I've ever heard, and they are truly quite amazing. They are worth a listen.

Customer Reviews:
disjointed but intriguing.......2005-04-29
apparently hailing from chicago, the troll only released one album, though they did have several other singles prior to this record, including a couple of very minor chart appearances...this album, which is hard to classify, sounds as if it was thrown together rather haphazardly, as some of the tuns sound like they were recorded at different times. some of this material, like the decent " i've only myself to blame," is very beatles or early bee gees sounding. the album runs the gamut from soft and dreamy folk-rock to hard pop/psych to vaudeville nostalgia. werewolf and witchbreath is a fine, somewhat eerie, hard rock number that sounds a litle bit like some of the detroit groups, like Src or Frijid Pink, of this era. There's some cool guitar and weird keyboards on this cut, and also some fairly creepy lyrics. satin city news, the 45 from this release, is a standard but fairly good blues-rock commercial number. mr abernathy, a song about a fundamentally decent and honest but nevertheless doomed politician , mirrors the type of campaign songs that were prevalent during the 1920's or 1930's. fritz und sweeney is perhaps the most annoying song on the album, a tale about two shoemaker's sons who reach adulthood in germany at the time of hitler. have you seen the queen? is a not terribly successful comic number with pretentious , upper class british voices. everybody's child is an ok but typical 60's rock song. mourning of the day is a good psychedelic song with a driving beat and insistent keyboards.
for me, the highlight of the disc is professor pott's pornographic projector, an 1890's- 20's type tune, complete with varispeed vocals, funny lyrics, kazoos etc., with a great bassline that recounts the humorous saga of an eccentric professor who shows pornographic events on his machine. many groups in the 60's did these throwback type songs, and this is one of the better ones.. overall, the strengths of this album ( particularly werewolf and witchbreath and professor pott's...) outweigh the drawbacks..it's disjointed, and some of the tracks are rather weak, but worth investigation for the two stellar tracks nonetheless..

Over the Hills and Far Away with Tveitt.......2002-12-11
I strongly recommend this disc. One encounters the odd name of Geirr Tveitt (1908-1981) with some frequency nowadays, as producers of "classical music" on compact disc explore the roads less traveled of modern repertory. Tveitt, a Norwegian, shares a musical language with two of his landsmen-contemporaries, Eivind Groven and Harald Saeverud. Each draws immediately on the Norse folk-idiom; none is aggressively modern in the sense that he writes deliberately ugly music although Saeverud absorbed certain rhythmic gestures from Stravinsky and of the three he dared the most in his style (because he dared the most acerbic harmonies). Tveitt and Groven remained tied to a national romanticism stemming from Grieg, Halvorsen, and Sinding; they learned from Bartok how to exploit the motifs or constituent "germs" inherent in a folk-melos to create real development in convincing large-scale musical structures. Both exploited the same niche within Norwegian folk music, the deeply seated and melodically rich tradition associated with the region around Hardanger Fjord, the folklore heart of the country. In scores like "Hjalarljod" ("Shouting from the Hills") and "Brudgommen" ("The Bridegroom") Groven can make the string section of an orchestra sound like a gigantic Hardanger fiddle. The prolific Tveitt went Groven one better and wrote two concertos (recently recorded by BIS) especially for this peculiarly Norwegian instrument. He also wrote a series of orchestral "Suites" based on similar regional material under the collective title "One Hundred Hardanger Tunes." Like Groven, Tveitt often uses the orchestra to imitate the sounds of the folk instruments. Of the six suites, two perished in a 1971 house fire that burnt most of the composer's many manuscripts, but the others were preserved either in autograph score kept elsewhere or through reconstruction from providential sketches and parts. Naxos has now released the four extant "Suites." The new disc programs Numbers Two and Five of the series. The form that Tveitt adopts in these works is simple but unusual. He deploys the tunes consecutively, making each the subject of a section of the whole, but the articulations are so smooth, and the tunes so closely related in their outlines and feelings, that the unfolding music makes an impression of continuity and development. At the same time, the music can be quite pictorial or programmatic. Each "Suite" has a name. Suite Number Two bears the moniker "Fifteen Mountain Songs" and Number Five "Troll-Tunes." Both "Fifteen Mountain Songs" and "Troll-Tunes" emphasize the grotesque aspect of Norwegian folklore. "Fifteen Mountain Songs" has the same outline as Strauss' "Alpine Symphony": a trek up the mountain, from the summit of which the observer then looks out on the prospect. There is vivid nature painting, much Norwegian vernacular yodeling, and quirky, lurching rhythms reminiscent of the Icelander Jon Leifs. "Troll-Tunes" is a degree or two more macabre: in Scandinavia trolls are not the dwarfish dolls collected by American children; they're impish, untrustworthy, downright dangerous denizens of mountain and forest. No one in his right mind would have anything to do with them. Here, Tveitt alternates mysterious slow movements with grotesque scherzos: the episodic sequence of movements should result in an impression of starting and stopping, but it does not. There are echoes of Edvard Grieg, naturally enough, but echoes only. In fact, in comparison with Tveitt, Grieg seems to have worked in picture postcards, the hazy photography of which softens all edges and shows everything in a too-sweet light; Tveitt understands that folk music is rude and hard, all the more so in reflecting the ethos of the Norwegian fjords, where life could be severe. These works are modern, Nordic-flavored counterparts of the regionally inflected orchestral suites composed by audience-friendly artists such as Jules Massenet or Joachim Raff. They are "minor works," but of the first class, and well worth the investment. Tveitt more than deserves his rediscovery by record collectors. Look for his Variations on a Norwegian Folksong for Two Piano and Orchestra and his Piano Concerto No. 4, "Aurora Borealis," also on Naxos.
Budget Brilliance.......2002-11-26
This is a simply wonderful disc, featuring two colorful, brilliantly orchestrated, evocative works. The suites have a lot in common, though each stands out (and indeed, they are quite distinguishable from suites 1 and 4, previously released on Naxos). The Fifteen Mountain Songs, Suite No.2, captures an earthy, bawdy, yet unimistakably supernatural world. They provide a fitting soundtrack to any collection of Scandinavian folk tales, with subjects ranging from Mountain cattle-calls (a particularly haunting piece) to "Beard ablaze," which depicts a humorous folk anecdote. The orchestration is phenomenal, hardly the monochromatic textures of Grieg, but much closer to Ravel at his finest--Daphnis et Chloe, for example. Listen to track number 9, "Do you hear the song in the waterfall's roar?" where Tveitt conjures up a sublime orchestral waterfall, yet manages to balance it carefully enough so that, if you listen carefully, a haunting melody emerges behind it.
Troll Tunes, Suite no.5, conjures up the world of fairy tales and magic more explicitly, but this is not your typical elvish fair. His sound world is much darker, yet infinitely more "magical" in the best sense. Each piece brings a new texture, a new mood, and a new surprise. A personal favorite is track number 20, "the Changeling," which grows in intensity and orchestral effects.
Again, Naxos really deserves credit for unearthing such wonderful music. Its neglect is astonishing, since they would make wonderful showpieces for any orchestra, as the Royal Scottish National Orchestra proves. Bjarte Engeset's conducting is first rate, and the sounds he coaxes out of his winning orchestra will remain a treasured CD for quite some time. If you're curious about Tveitt, enjoy Scandinavnian music, and have a penchant for fairy tales, this might be the disc for you.
Buy This Immediately!.......2002-09-28
Tveitt will soon become a phenomenon like Gorecki. But his music is better. Unique. Conservative and radical. Highly sophisticated and naively primitive. I was bowled over by Tveitt's orchestrations, and the depth of his simplicity.
The Suite #2 is the best, an absolute must for lovers of the rough outdoors. Tveitt's depiction of a waterfall in one number must be heard to be believed. The performance and sonics are superb. At Naxos prices--this is a free diamond.
Do not hesitate!

INFO.......2006-10-02
!"International Harvester" Trout's sophomore full-length CD, was recorded between February 23, 1996 and June 19, 1996 on a part-time basis. The basic tracks and many of the overdubs were recorded in Troll for Trout's rehearsal studios in a converted warehouse on the banks of the Grand River just north of downtown Grand Rapids. "We wanted to capture the live essence of the band on this record so we thought it would be cool to do the record right here at our home base", says writer/vocalist/producer Michael Crittenden. The band called upon John Fritz of Digital Arts Recording to handle the engineering duties and supply them with extra recording equipment. Mixing of "International Harvester" was done by Michael and Fritz at Digital Arts. The CD was released in September of 1996 and contains the songs Wishuwell, Promise, Resolving, Completely Understanding, Balance, Thirst, Dream Away the Moon, Map Song, Poppy Fields, Robinhood of Presidents, Slow Retrieve, and Forest. "International Harvester" has sold over 4000 copies to date and is currently out of print.
