Album Description

Out of print in the U.S.! Digitally remastered special installment in the Elvis Double Features series includes the complete soundtracks to four of Elvis' '60s fun-filled feature films. The artwork is superior to the deleted domestic titles as it features photos of the original vinyl releases on the cover. This CD contains all the songs from the movies Live A Little Love A Little (1968) and The Trouble With Girls, Charro and Change Of Habit (all released in 1969) plus bonus tracks. Originally, each of the films only had singles and/or EPs released containing the soundtrack's performances. Elvis' acting may have been a little stiff, but his vocal performances on his soundtrack recordings were always electrifying. 20 tracks including 'A Little Less Conversation', Rubberneckin'' and 'Clean Up Your Own Backyard'. 5 out of 5 stars super set from the man.......2007-02-12

This cd has so many good songs on it.Alot of underappreciated and overlooked material. The song Edge of Reality from the dream sequence in Live A Little Love A Little was ahead of its time. The versions of Almost,Swing Down Sweet Chariot, and Clean Up Your Own Backyard from The Trouble With Girls are awesome.Let Us Pray from Change Of Habit is worth the price of the cd alone.Rubberneckin from the same movie is great also.No number one radio hits here, just plain good music, happy, feel good, toe tapping music.Buy it and enjoy.Get it while you can, this one will be a high dollar item when it is no longer available. The music from Charro has often been overlooked and unavailable as well and it is great music as well.

3 out of 5 stars Armchair quarterback's always moanin'........2006-08-08

This CD features the soundtracks to the last four Elvis Presley movies. This is possible because none of these soundtracks had more than six songs.

Live a Little, Love a Little features four good songs, including one great one, "A Little Less Conversation". This song was not a hit at the time, but it gained newfound popularity a few years ago in a remixed version. This CD includes two versions of "A Little Less Conversation", the "movie version" and the "album version", but they sound the same to me.

The Charro! soundtrack features two songs, but only the title song actually made it into the movie. Both songs are okay, nothing special. But "Charro!" does have a spaghetti western feel to it that is different from any other Elvis song.

The Trouble With Girls featured six songs. "Clean Up Your Own Backyard" is a great song which was a minor hit, but deserved to be a bigger hit. "Almost" and "Swing Down, Sweet Chariot" are good songs, although "Chariot" isn't as good as the version of it Elvis recorded a few year earlier. "Signs of the Zodiac" is a goofy novelty song, which is a duet between Elvis and actress Marlyn Mason (she does most of the singing). "The Whiffenpoof Song" and "Violet" are very short versions of collegiate songs. The CD also includes undubbed versions of "Clean Up Your Own Backyard" (no horns or girl singers) and "Almost" (no strings).

Change of Habit features five songs, four of which aren't too good. "Rubberneckin'", on the other hand, is a great song. Of course, it wasn't specifically recorded for the movie, either.

A little over half the songs on this CD are good, which may make it worthwhile for an Elvis fan to seek out.

5 out of 5 stars Critics be Damned.......2003-11-12

Elvis's movie career, especially the mid to late 1960s output, has long been the favorite whipping boy of critics. Of the King's many cinematic endeavors from this era, few elicit more scorn and ridicule than the four featured on this collection: 1968's "Live a Little, Love a Little" and the three 1969 releases, "Charro!", "The Trouble with Girls (and How to Get into It) and "Change of Habit." Given this negative stigma, it is not surprising that the music associated with these four films have been virtually ignored by all but the most uncompromising Elvis fan. This is unfortunate because as evidenced by the four soundtracks compiled on this version of "Elvis: Double Features", the quartet of films featured some very underrated songs. This disc contains 20 tracks representing an eclectic grouping of Presley recordings that is more diverse than any collection this side of an all encompassing boxed set. Soft love ballads, upbeat sing-alongs, social minded mantras, and a couple of unreleased tracks highlight this collection. The movie "Live a Little" offers two top-notch performances: the bluesy "Edge of Reality" (B-Side of the 1968 hit "If I Can Dream) and the underappreciated "A Little Less Conversation", another 1968 single that achieved very mediocre chart position. Both performances sound fresh and each has a gritty drive far removed from what was usually found on Presley soundtracks. "Charro!", a movie best remembered as the one in which Elvis sported a full beard and delivered just one song (during the film's opening credits) offers up two gems. In the title track, Elvis's strong vocals are backed by the magnificent Hugo Montenegro Orchestra, and the combination delivers a classic, albeit, cliché laden western movie love ballad. The second track, "Let's Forget About the Stars", didn't make it into the film's final version and that is unfortunate because the song is a tender sonnet. RCA should have released this song with "Charro!" as a single instead of using the latter as a throw away B-Side with "Memories" in 1969. The third movie of this soundtrack, "The Trouble with Girls", features eight tracks. The highlight is "Clean Up Your Own Backyard", a Dylan-esque narrative with the underlining theme of "people who live in glass houses...". The very short, but very touching ballad "Almost" effectively shows off Elvis's fine vocals. This CD features dubbed and undubbed versions of each song. Saving the best for last, Elvis's last feature film "Change of Habit" contributes the remaining five songs of this collection. All are excellent. "Have a Happy" is an upbeat ditty (even if it does sound like something the "Brady Bunch" would have recorded) and is harmless fun. The title track is a quick tempo song with a social conscious and the very catchy "Let Us Pray" is a gospel rocker RCA should have released as a single. The final track, "Rubberneckin", packs a wallop and features a musical composition quite contemporary for the era in which it was produced...the record deserved a much better fate than to be paired as the B-Side of the 1969 release "Don't Cry Daddy." Ironically, this disc features the two Elvis songs, "A Little Less Conversation" and "Rubberneckin", that both reached number one on the charts when released in a dance remix format in 2002 and 2003 respectively. Can remix versions of "Change of Habit" or "Clean Up Your Own Backyard" be far behind? All in all, "Elvis: Double Features" clearly prove that Elvis possessed the ability to produce above quality music though burdened by substandard movie scripts...critics be damned!!

4 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING VOCALS, SOME GREAT SONGS........2003-08-28

As Elvis' movies matured in their content, the songs improved as well. This CD includes all the songs included and recorded for Elvis' last four movies and suprise, it is very good.

The songs from "Live a Little, Love a Little" are an odd mixture and quite different from Elvis' previous soundtracks. While this movie contained, as almost every Elvis movie did, a love ballad(s) and a rocker(s), the songs are smarter and geared to a more adult audience. The love ballad "Almost In Love", a song with an unusual tempo, is sung in a very deep voice and while not one of Elvis' best ballads, it is still above average. "Little Less Conversation", the rocker, has mean lyrics and Elvis is perfect for this type of song. Two versions of this song appear on this CD, the original 1968 single version and the version that appeared on the RCA / Camden budget LP "Almost In Love". "Wonderful World", a feel good ballad that should have been released as a single, and "Edge Of Reality" an unusual, interesting and indescribable ballad, are the remaings songs from this movie.

While only one song was included in the movie "Charro!", that being the title song, there was another song recorded for the movie that was not in the final print of the film. "Let's Forget About The Stars" is a fine ballad in which urges his love to forgot about astrology and follow her heart. The title song is passionately sung and one the few story ballads Elvis recorded.

The songs from "The Trouble With Girls" are an even odder mixute than the ones from "Live A Little.." "Clean Up Your Own Backyard" is a social commentary song that actually hit the Top 40 in 1969 and Elvis growls and chews on the lyrics as only he could. "Almost" is a lovely and sad, although short ballad. Elvis could sing these songs till his blue moon turned to gold. "Swing Down, Sweet Chariot" is a remake from Elvis 1960 gospel album "His Hand In Mine" and Elvis gives it just as solid of a treatment as he did eight years previously. The rest of the songs from this movie, "Violet", "The Whiffenpoof Song" and Signs Of The Zodiac" (a duet with co-star Marilyn Mason) were recorded directly from the soundtrack of the movie and are not noteworthy.

"Change of Habit" was Elvis' last movie in which he acted and the songs range from exellent to average. "Let Us Pray" is an outstanding gospel number and the title song is a psuedo gospel number that while well sung and written, suffers from being over produced. "Rubberneckin" was not recorded for this movie, but was actually recorded at Elvis' famous Memphis sessions of 1969 that produced "Suspicious Minds" and "Kentucky Rain". It was included in the movie and it is a wild, raucous song that has to be heard to be believed. "Have A Happy" is a more typical Elvis movie song that in the movie is sung to a child, and it is innocuous and pleasant. "Let's Be Friends" was cut from the movie and was actually an alternate song for "Have A Happy". It has slightly more mature lyrics than "Have a Happy" and again is a nice, listenable track.

Overall, I would give this CD 4 and 1/2 stars and recommend it to any Elvis fan.

3 out of 5 stars Above standard soundtrack recordings........2001-10-10

Here are Elvis' final soundtrack entries, and it's interesting to realize that as his interest in movie-making waned, the quality of the product came up more than a notch. The roles fit his age and generally he did a fine job in the acting department, and a *very* fine job singing. His vocals are strong, especially when the material is good - i.e. on the uptempo, contemporary "Edge of Reality" from "Live A Little..."; "Clean Up Your Own Backyard" from "The Trouble With Girls"; and the title tune to "Change of Habit". The lone number for "Charro" is its' musical namesake and is very well-produced, but Elvis' vocal is not what it could have been. Another low-key effort is for "Let's Forget About The Stars", a tired "beat ballad", if you will, a song which is reported to be from the session for the Western "Charro". The tune would have fit a scene from the light musical "Live A Little..." when the subject of Astrology comes up at a party. [Presley experts, do you think Elvis could have carried this possibly planned but unrecorded "Live A Little..." number to the "Charro" session?] For me, the highlight in this collection is "Swing Down, Sweet Chariot" from "The Trouble...", an actual Presley remake of a song from his "His Hand In Mine" album. This '68 rendition of a song he also did *live* at the '61 Hawaiian Benefit Concert (see "Elvis Aron Presley" boxed set from 1980) is a bit livelier. [**** for Elvis collectors / ** for casual fans = a solid ***].

The exploits of Ian Fleming's British super-agent James Bond have long since become the longest running film series in history, spanning 40 years and counting. Not the least of the cycle's charm has been its music, a body of work that encompasses pop clichés (the twangy guitar of Monty Norman's original "James Bond Theme") and elegant underscores alike. While this collection spans music from Dr. No to The World Is Not Enough, decades of various legal entanglements prevented it from becoming the ultimate Bond music anthology. This is more a credible simulation, a newly recorded collection of cues and suites (including music previously unreleased on the original soundtracks) performed by Nic Raine and the City of Prague Symphony Orchestra. With John Barry's lush, ever-evocative scores both forming the core and setting the tone (but also featuring the work of George Martin, David Arnold, Michael Kamen, Bill Conti, and Eric Serra), it's the most comprehensive--if not exactly authentic--collection of Bond music yet attempted. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars almost the perfect James Bond collection.......2005-07-20

this 4 CD box has most of the familiar James Bond compositions.

Still, some tunes are missing(from for instance Thunderball and For Your Eyes Only)and most of the time the attention is on the instrumental version of the title track which is a bit of a shame. And yet, there are too many great pieces on this collection to make it a failure.Alpine Drive,Dawn Raid at Fort Knox,On Her Majesty's Secret Service(every track),Miss Goodhead and so on.All great pieces that not only show the great talent of John Barry but also the great power of James Bond films.Cause when you hear the music, you see the scenes in front of you.

Very much a recommendation to all Bond and Barry fans although sometimes it focusses too much on title songs. The only solution is to buy all separate soundtracks.

5 out of 5 stars Good Collection.......2005-02-24

Very nice packaging and good tracks from the Bond music library make this an anoutstanding item. "From Russia With Love" and "Diamonds Are Forever" contain beautiful and energetic renditions. The John Barry music is handled quite well. I didn't real care for the David Arnold selections. "The World Is Not Enough" was weak. Overall it is a good collection just the same.

3 out of 5 stars Not excatly what I expected.......2003-04-10

I when I read some of the reviews of this I thought that this was a complete collection of all the originals of the Theme songs of every James Bond movie and remakes done by the Prague Philharmonic of some of the other songs in the various movies. After recieveing this ... I started to listen to it and found out that it was all done by the orchestra. The are very good, but to a point it is not the same thing as owning a disc will all the orignal songs on it. Overall, this good if all the you want is the orchestral versions of most of the songs in the movies or the suites out of some of the movies. To a point these don't compare to the orignals. Keep looking if you want a set with all the orignals songs in it.

4 out of 5 stars The James Bond CD for the John Barry purist?.......2003-01-28

Let's cut to the chase. Nic Raine and the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra do John Barry's work justice. 90% of this collection is as close as you can get to the original James Bond soundtracks. The other 10% lends itself to some artistic license with respect to the arrangements. Most notable is the main theme to Goldfinger. Also Nic slips in a few previously unreleased tracks. You will find these on the On Her Majesty's Secret Service and Golden Eye tracks. This CD boxed set is definitely made for the Bond soundtrack fan. The die hard John Barry "purist"/ traditionalist may find some of these tracks questionable at first, but after a few times Nic Raine's artistic license gives a fresh perspective to the familiar Bond/ Barry themes. The only reservation I have with this CD set is with some of selections that are performed. For instance, from Goldfinger, "Dawn Raid At Fort Knox" was a poor selection considering the selection available on that particular soundtrack. The most famous 007 soundtrack of all I dare say. Overall Nic hits the mark, and this CD set is a tribute to Barry's (as well as, George Martin's, Marvin Hamlish's, and Bill Conti's and David Arnold's) work. It's all here in one collection. I am a die-hard Bond soundtrack fan, and to the casual soundtrack fan I say this CD is set all you need to experience the Bond music legacy. To those who are hard core 007 soundtrack fans ...this is a FANTASTIC "addition" to your collection. This has to be the BEST (and probably the only) 007 "soundtrack" compilation. Whereas all the others feature the "main themes" from the Bond films as originally recorded, this one truly gives you the Bond experience.

3 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable with most of the BOND music you'd want........2002-12-08

This is similar but more comprehensive than another BOND collection on one CD by the City of Prague Philharmonic. These are good renditions but clearly not the orginals. I must ask if the Prague Philharmonic does not own a harp? It is glaringly missing in the Goldfinger themes and i am sure on others. That harp is an exciting and beautiful touch to the wonderful GOLDFINGER theme and its absents is unfortuneatly very noticeable. Also some of the other themes can even sound muzaky if thats a word(elevator music)
It gets 3 solid stars good collection yet defineatly something is lacking.

From the jumpin' opening rockin' number, "Rock N Roll Boogie", till the final note of the Presleyesque "Another Heartache", Peter & The Wolves delivers some of the hottest vintage sounding rockabilly and rock n' roll since 1956 on their new release "Trouble With Girls".

5 out of 5 stars Rock n' Roll the way it's suppose to be!.......2005-08-22

Rockabilly the way it's suppose to be - tough, cool and rockin'. These rockabillies kick ass! The best album of rock n' roll since the 1950s.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Darn Good!.......2004-06-08

I'm very picky when it comes to this stuff and this is a pretty good cd. It's hiccuppy rockabilly with lots of echo and a competent singer who just falls short of Elvis. This is evident on the self-penned final track, which is very good, but I can't help thinking how GREAT it would have been in the hands of The King in his prime. Also notable is that this is original style Sun Records rockabilly, as opposed to the stuff put out by The Belmont Playboys, Hillbilly Hellcats, etc. and free of the obscenities favored by some rockabilly bands of recent years. Guitarist Ralph Rebel plays some tasty licks and should stick to this stuff instead of trying to rehash classic surf tunes. All in all, this is one rockin' cd and I'd certainly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Trouble With Girls is Rockin!.......2001-12-20

I was intrigued by the Black Cat Rockabilly's descriptions of Peter and The Wolves in the Black Cat newsletter, so I ordered the CD, Trouble With Girls. It just came today and it's rockin'! I'll be enjoying it. I just can't imagine what a wealth of rock 'n' roll we'd have if modern recording studio technology had existed back in the days of Holly, Simmons, Cochran, et al. If all of their music had been recorded with the clarity of Trouble With Girls... well, I just can't imagine it. This is one rockin' CD!

3 out of 5 stars Let us sing together........2006-08-08

4 out of 5 stars A must have for your collection.......2000-01-26

Once was lost now is found. I thought the good ol'e days of rock n' roll were dead until I saw these guys jam out at Shuba's in Chicago. This album is cookin' with gas, you gotta grab it while you can.

4 out of 5 stars Add this to your collection.......1999-12-18

Personal favorites from this Chicago trio are Last Dart Leaving, Just How Evil and Licorice. These songs are tasty tidbits of pop rock at its best. While the hooks are enough, the real treat is catching Jeff Cohen's lyrics that jump back and forth across the line between acute observer and sociopath misfit. Other songs on the cd deviate from the Costello pop influence and cater to the alt.country (I know I'm sick of this term too but it fits) crowd. Pay attention to Cruel and Loud -- a great example of the tears in your beer genre.

      4 out of 5 stars badly overlooked.......1999-10-26

I have discovered yet another overlooked band from the Heartland of America. The singer reminds me of Elvis Costello. Some songs are simply evil sounding, while others carry a catchy tune--ready for the radio, though I think the happiest ones are probably even meaner underneath it all. Chicago does it again.
