This series of 11 church anthems is a sterling example of doing more with less. Though their format is multiple movements for soloists, chorus, and orchestra, inviting grand treatment, Handel had available only a couple of oboes and a small string band and choir (with no violas or altos for numbers 1 to 6). Yet each one of these anthems is a gem. Handel's music captures well the changing moods of the Psalm texts--from somber penitence to serene bliss to infectious joy to the raging of storms and seas. Though James Bowman's arias lie uncomfortably low for him, he and Michael George do fine work; Lynne Dawson, Patrizia Kwella, and Ian Partridge are delightful. Harry Christophers leads his choir and orchestra in subtly inflected and beautifully paced performances. --Matthew Westphal

5 out of 5 stars Divine!.......2007-06-17

These psalms set to music, for use in church services, are divine! Handel never fails to please and the recording is top notch.
Now that you've heard Handel's versions, be sure to check out what Henry Purcell did a generation earlier with the same material.

5 out of 5 stars Oh, I love Handel!!.......2007-04-18

Why haven't I heard of this music before? I have long loved the Messiah, in fact, I have about 15 different CD versions of it! Now I can listen to Handel all year long, and for me this is all new music! If you love Handel's Messiah, you will love this collection! I just started listening to it on my drive to and from work, and I was transported! I enjoy the solos, the duets, and then the whole ensemble singing gloriously together. I am very happy I purchased the entire set!

5 out of 5 stars Why aren't these better known?.......2006-04-14

It boggles my mind that this seems still to be the only complete set of the Anthems available on CD. The first of the discs came out in 1989 or so and volumes 1 and 2 were among the first CDs I ever bought (late adopter, I admit); I eagerly awaited and bought the others as they came out. Not that there's much to criticize about these performances. Oh, you may not like the tenor's very heavy dependence on mixed voice to hit high notes -- I don't mind it and for all I know it's faithful to the style of Handel's day -- or like the sound of the countertenor soloists or even the particular vocal qualities of one or the other of the sopranos (I find nothing wrong with any of them), but the chorus and instrumentalists sing and play crisply and very well. These Anthems were written to be lively and entertaining as well as full of honest devotion. Handel's grasp of English was still shaky at the time, and the choice of metrical versions of the Psalms for many of the texts is, well, questionable. More that one phrase will raise a smile: "That God is great we often have/ By glad experience found/ And seen how he with wond'rous pow'r/ Above all other gods is crown'd" is a prime example -- but listen to the bass (under-used by Handel in these Anthems, sadly: perhaps he lacked a reliable one at the time) sing Handel's setting, which reminds me of a beautiful, affectionate puppy of a large breed: slightly ridiculous, a bit bumbling, but attractive and strong and lovable. Or the chorus about "snares, fire, and brimstone" pouring in a "dreadful mixture" on the wicked: clearly the choristers are having great fun, just as I would, given the chance to sing this absurd version of the Psalmist's words. Buy this set, get your local choral society to sing one or more of these Anthems (I got to sing #11 once), spread the word.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent - one of the best Handel CD's availible........2001-11-29

This baroque era "Praise Music" is light years beyond the vacuous pablum that passes for praise music in churches today. I have had these four CD's for almost a decade (previous release) and they are still among my favorites. Almost all the songs (all the spoken music that is - a few songs are instrumental preludes) are Bible scripture verses set to music - similar to what Handel did in the Messiah. The musical quality of the CD is excellent. You would never guess that only 16 people are doing the choral parts. If you only have 10 CD sets of traditional Christian music this CD set should be one of them.

5 out of 5 stars Rediscovered, the Chandos anthems deserve your ears!.......1998-10-27

Handel's Chandos anthems are apparently being rediscovered, as the release of several new recordings bears witness. This set is surely the best available, and is certainly the only complete collection. Especially beautiful are the duets ("O Worship the Lord in the Beauty of Holiness" and "Wash Me Th'roughly") and the tenor's recitatives. Performance is brisk and tight, though never rushed. Those who favor Simon Preston's even snappier style may prefer his rendition of Anthem 10 (now distributed with his very fine, and affordable, "Israel in Egypt"), but overall no one can be disappointed with this collection of too-rarely heard works.

3 out of 5 stars ..........2006-12-08

The minimalistic artwork of this album is gorgeous and makes great use of typography, although the text is a little hard to read. But why a lily?! It's almost as if this band wants to have no street cred at all.
Perhaps that really is the case, as their debut release makes it obvious that A Heart Well Ending is young. I applaud the band for being able to put together an album and sticking to it the way they have, because it seems pretty obvious that the band has fun doing what they do. However, the truth is that there isn't much the band can offer that hasn't already been offered. But if you are a fan of pop-punk and decent-looking rocker boys, then by all means, check out A Heart Well Ending.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-03-27

This album is a great return for Josh to "The New Trust". His previous work in "The Velvet Teen" was what led me to this album. Each song on this album is short and to the point, with a little different sound to each one. Josh's great vocals and bass really give the album it's unique sound.
It's very easy to jump into, I fell in love with the first listen.
Just check out the song "Wake up it's the ninteties" on their Purevolume page and you'll see just what's so great about this band.

5 out of 5 stars ALL THE MUSIC YOU EVER NEED!!.......2003-05-23

This boxed set is by far one of the best purchases I have ever made. As a Purcell freak, this hits every button I have. The cast of characters include the inequitable Robert King, New College Choir, Bowman, and a host of other venerable persons. Likewise the attention to period performance of these works makes it an essential addition to the library of any serious anglophile/Musicologist etc. Now if only the Britten Realizations of all Purcell's songs could be recorded alongside the originals! You will Love this set!

    Album Description

The Wizard of Oz a musical with book and lyrics by L. Frank Baum and music by Paul Tietjens premiered on June 16, 1902, at the Grand Opera House in Chicago. It was an instant hit and made stars of David Montgomery (the Tin Woodman) and Fred Stone (the Scarecrow). On January 21, 1903 the show opened at the Majestic Theatre in New York. It ran for nine months and set out on the road with a second company right on its heels. The show toured, came back to New York, toured, and returned to New York again many times until finally disbanding around 1911. Stock and amateur companies continued to present it into the 1930s when it was overshadowed by the classic MGM film starring Judy Garland.

The show was legendary for its success and its impact on American culture. It was the Cats or Les Mis of the early 1900s--but the show has been swallowed by history. What made audiences of the early 1900s devour the show and return for more again and again? In this unprecedented 2-CD set—featuring over 145 minutes of vintage recordings and 64 pages of lyrics, photos, notes and synopsis—you can discover how The Wizard of Oz entertained the American public for the first two decades of the 20th century. And like the audiences of nearly a hundred years ago, you can hum along to "Budweiser," "Sammy," and "Hurrah for Baffin's Bay"—everyone's favorite songs from The Wizard of Oz! Also included in this comprehensive collection are recordings from later Oz musicals, The Woggle-Bug and The Tik-Tok Man of Oz written by Oz creator L. Frank Baum, as well as vintage non-Oz recordings by original "Wizard of Oz stars" Montgomery & Stone and Bessie Wynn

5 out of 5 stars A Collection of the Original Oz Stage Productions.......2006-12-07

This Double-Disk Collection contains music from the original and varied Oz Stage Productions: "the Wizard of Oz", "the Woggle-Bug" (based on 'Marvelous Land of Oz) and "the Tik-Tok Man of Oz" (based on 'Ozma of Oz'). There are plenty of "Wizard" songs and music, but there isn't a lot of "Woggle-Bug" and/or "Tik-Tok Man".
I often wondered how different the 1st & Original Production of 'Oz Wizard' was different to the book, and thanks to Mark Evan Schwartz's book "Oz: Before the Rainbow" I found out for myself (WORTH A READ!!). Later I got this CD to go along with the book's stage telling (more or less) and I listened in interest to the songs which, I read, were entirely different to the future Musicals of Oz. The songs are good, but not all of them are actually completely restored to perfection, so the singing may/will sound somewhat muffled. Also, due to the time it was made (for some reason), the songs don't actually fit into the story (even the stage's rewritten story) and sound distant/unrelated. But there are songs that sound similar to the original story ("Rejoice! The Wizard is No Longer King"). CD 2's Track 3 has music played during Silent Oz Film "His Majesty, Scarecrow" on the MGM 3-Disk DVD.
The best thing about this CD Collection is the two booklets packaged along with the disks: the first (entitled "The Records") has writing on "What the Wizard Was" with a synopsis of the stage production story and "About the Recordings", a listing of all the songs on CD 1 (which are helpful for "Selection" Tracks not specifically named on the back) and notes on the songs like their origins and background. Booklet 2 (entitled "The Lyrics") has the words to the songs (in case you can't make out the words/want to sing-along). BOTH CDs include b&w photos of the actors, performance (few of which can be seen in "Oz: Before the Rainbow" book) and even reprints of a few illustrations made for the stage. The pictures are the best part of this purchase.
The Entirely Different Songs may not fit with the story, original or rewritten, but there's nothing really wrong with the music when one enjoys to what they're listening to.
I know that there is also another 'Oz on Stage' CD Collection called "Before the Rainbow" . . . hmmm, I wonder if I should get that too?

    5 out of 5 stars Ain't it a Shame!.......2006-05-20

I think that this is a wonderful album of HISTORICAL value. Not too many people know this, but "the wizard of oz" was made into a smash hit in 1903, but because all the history was BARELY in obscurity, hungry tiger press wanted to educate the blockheads in the world about this remarkable piece of history. that being said, david maxine collected all of the old material, such as Piano rolls (my especial favorite of all of them is "the poppy song", i LOVE the bass notes: "nnn-ded-deh mmmm-ded-deh"), and music boxes, and cylinders, and records!
however, it is quite a shame that that CRAPPY movie with judy garland pushed this lovely musical into obscurity. i would have liked to see it in my day, but it was already lost in darkness, but thanks to the highly DIGNIFIED people in the world, this cd is available!! BUY IT!!!! I *ORDER* YOU!!! YOU CANNOT BE DIGNIFIED WITHOUT THIS REPLACING YOUR "RAP" GARBAGE WITH THIS JEWEL!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Why the 1903 "Wizard" was forgotten.......2004-03-20

This truly remarkable 2-disc collection of old cylinders, discs, music boxes and piano rolls explains why the 1903 musical version of "The Wizard of Oz" did not survive the early thirties. It wasn't because it was before its time or even of its time, but simply because it was way behind the times. Its producers resisted composer's Paul Tietjens' attempts to write plot-driven numbers. His contribution survives only in the incidental music preserved on piano rolls (and the most interesting element on this collection) linking very disparate and even incongruous vaudeville acts by various authors and performers that graced the stage during the musical's multi-decade run. In other words, Baum was telling a story and the songs were telling another... As fascinating as they are for historical reasons, those numbers are commonplace, mostly uninspired flash-in-the-tin-pan ditties, with timid syncopation and a stong reliance on musical clichés. There is not a single standard among them and not even a decent lyric where "fine" doesn't rhyme with "mine" and "love you" doesn't rhyme with "I do"- or even "I know you know I know you do", as happens more than once. As an assemblage of shtick pieces and ephemeral sentimental or nonsensical ditties, this collection cannot be topped and it represents a monumental effort. Without it and its very generous and informative liner notes, I would not have the same appreciation for the absolute genius of Victor Herbert's operettas ("Babes in Toyland" came out the same year) where the more memorable songs are plot-driven and introduced and linked by the most luscious, inventive and varied incidental music ever heard outside an opera house. This sort of unified concept would culminate in Jerome Kern's "Show Boat" and it remains a truth today that the integration of plot and music - reminiscent of opera - is the true secret of successful and perennial musicals, whatever the current idiom. This collection also makes one appreciate the complete originality of the Hollywood film for actually going back to Baum's books, entrusting the songs, lyrics and music to Harold Arlen, Yip Harburg and Herbert Stothart and scrapping the musical's colourful but checkered history (except for casting ex-vaudevillians as the main characters, of course!). Highly recommended for its nostalgia value, its irreplaceable rarities and a better understanding of the history of American popular music.

5 out of 5 stars A long overdue revisit to a classic American musical.......2003-09-30

Although it was one of the most financially successful stage musicals of the early 1900's, very little information is presently available on the 1903 production of THE WIZARD OF OZ. In what was obviously a labor of love, David Maxine has done much to correct this oversight by releasing a 2-CD set with over 145 minutes worth of extremely rare recordings of music from this and other OZ-themed musicals dating back to before World War I. Recorded materials include vintage acoustical disc and cylinder phonograph records, piano rolls, and music box discs, many of which go back almost a century. In addition, he has included two booklets worth of historical background information on the 1903 WIZARD OF OZ production, its stars, the individual musical numbers, and lyrics for the songs included on the CDs. (Lavishly illustrated with rare old black and white photos and artwork, these booklets, and the information they contain, are themselves worth the price of the set!) Several bonus CD tracks are included that offer rare recordings by Montgomery & Stone (the original Tin Woodsman and Scarecrow) and Bessie Wynn, who was also in the 1903 cast. Not just for dedicated Oz fans, this set is a "must have" for anyone interested in the history of American musical theater and American popular culture of the early 1900's.

5 out of 5 stars Long-Forgotten Broadway Hit Gets First Rate Revival.......2003-09-17

One hundred and three years ago, author L. Frank Baum published the best-selling children's book of the 20th century, THE WIZARD OF OZ. Although the book was adapted several times as plays, silent motion pictures, animated cartoons, and radio shows in the next few decades, it is the 1939 MGM film that most people think of as THE WIZARD OF OZ. The success and popularity of that film completely eclipsed the memories of previous incarnations and even the book itself in popular culture. However, prior to the film's release, there was a successful stage version which premiered on Broadway in 1903 and delighted audiences for many years, making stars of Fred Stone and David Montgomery, the original Scarecrow and Tinman. As with the MGM film, chilren who saw THE WIZARD OF OZ on stage carried fond memories of the production into adulthood. Ray Bolger was so impressed with the Fred Stone's Scarecrow, that he remembered it vividly as an adult and based his own protrayal of the character in the movie on Mr. Stone's stage version.

Unfortunately, time and Judy Garland have pushed the once popular Broadway Smash into history. It has been all but forgotten...until now.

As the show moved from theater to theater and casts changed, so did the songs. Many of these were recorded on the primative equipment of the day: Wax cylinders, 78-RPM records, piano rolls, and music Boxes, and surprisingly many of these still exist. Now, thanks to those hard-working gents at HUNGRY TIGER PRESS, you can own these historic recordings on this awesome 2-CD set. THE WIZARD OF OZ: Vintage Recordings From The 1903 Broadway Musical contains over 145 minutes of terrific early 20th century music. You won't find "Over the Rainbow" or "Ding! Dong! The Witch Is Dead!" here. Instead, this WIZARD OF OZ contains tracks like "Budweiser's a Friend of Mine", "Sammy", "Hurrah for Baffin's Bay", and "Rejoice! The Wizard is No Longer King", each one a portal over the rainbow to the Broadway stage of a century ago.

Obviously the play was quite different in plot from the movie--Dorothy travelled to Oz with her cow Imogene instead of Toto, for starters--, but the songs represent the style of popular music of 100 years ago and are collected here in a beautiful compilation. The set contains two booklets of liner notes which contain credits, lyrics, a written history of the production, and are extensively illustrated with photos and illustrations. Although the sound quality of the source material is not always up to today's standards, the songs are presented in the best versions possible, and the music is highly enjoyable. With 60 tracks and the wealth of information contained here, both written and photographic, this 2-CD set is good value for the money. A must-have for all collectors of WIZARD OF OZ memorabilia, an insightful look at popular music and Broadway history from a century ago, a glimpse into ethnic and racial stereotypes that were accepted at the time, and a curiosity for fans of the 1939 film, this set is big on appeal. Kudos to the Hungry Tiger Press for rescuing this treasure trove of musical history from obscurity!

4 out of 5 stars For fans of thoughtful Portland pop-punk-pop.......2005-08-18

This appeals to me as a long-time Heatmiser fan. Neil Gust was of course overshadowed by his band-mate and fellow singer-songwriter Elliot Smith, who was simultaneously pursuing already a solo career on Cavity Search and Kill Rock Stars labels. But Gust, taking often gay themes and working them into Heatmiser's power-pop-punk structures, continues to evolve leading this Portland trio, which keeps tracing the templates Gust (and Smith, even if the latter resisted them) established together as co-frontmen of Heatmiser. This album sounded only so-so when I first played it. It will not exactly leap out at you. You should get used to it slowly, coming back to it in a variety of moods. I returned to it after a long lapse and found that I was ready to appreciate its understated tones and offhand pace better.

This 2002 album follows "No Memory," but progresses smoother. It seems to have been more carefully prepared for than the restless debut which followed Heatmiser's demise more rapidly. The effort in this album, as its plaintive title suggests, may be not as widely heard as Smith's recordings, but admirers of their city's other 90's bands such as Quasi--whose Sam Coombes (ex-Heatmiser) appears on one track, Pond, & Heatmiser should find much to like--as should fans of Smith's more aggressive (if far less Beatlesque and baroque in No. 2) styles. Joanna Bolme, later of (S. Malkmus &) the Jicks and co-compiler of Smith's posthumous album, appears as co-"recorder"; the fourth Heatmiser member, Tony Lash, mixed the sharp & clear pressing.

It reminds me at times of Bob Mould vs. Husker Du, as in Sugar he attempted to marry the rawer pop-punk edge with more traditional song stylings and lyrics about relationships and yearning into a catchy delivery that neither insults the listener's intelligence nor strains to be overly sophisticated "college/alternative" self-referential ghettoized rock as a category too insular to be lastingly appealing as song craftsmanship rather than the exorcising of one's inner demons.

Mould and Gust contend with issues smartly, packaging them into three-minute messages that convey themselves smartly, yet, at their best, in a humbler persona than a strutting rock poseur. While Mould's critical acclaim, like Smith's, has dominated post-Husker and post-Heatmiser efforts by Gust (contrast those of Grant Hart), I trust that Gust and his band-mates will keep remembering that there's a loyal following for their brand of solid punk-pop as we mature alongside them, and that the demand for their thoughful blend of energy and introspection keeps up as we await a third album from No. 2...

5 out of 5 stars Motorpsycho? Trust Us!.......2004-11-28

Released in 1998 on the 'almighty' Stickman label, the mammoth 2-CD "Trust Us" stands out as perhaps Motorpsycho's richest work to date. Spending the entire 90s proving the limits of every genre far too narrow for a band of their calibre, "Trust Us" does the amazing feat of exceeding all of the band's previous work. (Those familiar with other parts of their discography would know that's quite an achievement!).

"Trust Us" makes words come short, and references won't do much better. Having previously been compared to virtually every respected band from the mid-60s and up, this epic masterpiece proves that even such a wealth of musical comparisons can't come close to describe the band's sound. Building on their previous adventures into space-rock and psychedelica (see "Angels and Daemons at Play"), the music of "Trust Us" makes references to contemporary minimalism, fusion and free-bag jazz just as relevant as anything else.

Sounding like a mix of Herbie Hancock in his early days meeting Pink Floyd and the Sonic Youth - all deciding to play works by Arne Nordheim -, combined with bass lines at times comparable to what Jaco Pastorius probably would sound like if reincarnated as a drunk member of an 80s German heavy-metal band, "Trust Us" captures the psychonauts at their absolute best. But despite seemingly owing their lives to nearly everyone ever involved in music, the psychos still manage to turn it all into something of their own. From post-rock à-la Godspeed! Your Black Emperor... influenced tracks like "Vortex Surfer", via. Psychedelic garage hit-songs like "Hey, Jane" to the jazz/minimalist experiments of "Siddhardtino" and "Dolphyn", Motorpsycho makes it all sound as the most natural combinations imaginable.

The first CD starts off with "Psychonaut", a piece of no-wave/krautrock mix capable of making even Faust look like a harmless walk in the park. Continuing with the bluesy garage-influenced "Ozone", the bands shows true beauty can come through noisy blues-beat guitar solos just as well as from anything else. Turning over to post-rock land on "The Ocean in Her Eye" and the classic "Vortex Surfer", the band's rock-adventure is abruptly interfered by a minute and a half of Trygve Seim playing his flute, before it continues on "577" - a track that would just as well fit into their '97 "Angels and Daemons at Play", but instead dives into a several minutes long solo of sheer beauty.

Seemingly starting off the second CD in the first manner as the first, added strings and old electric organs gives "Evernine" a slightly more symphonic feel, without ruining its psychedelic ambitions. "Radiator Freak" - including the sounds of wine-glasses, electric flutes and loops - is a 10-minute travel into a landscape best described as a mix of Indian folk and Canadian post-rock of the Montreal kind. Continuing this landscape into the far poppier "Taifun", "Superstooge" shows Bent's signature bass-playing at its fattest, creating dirty blues in a manner only professional psychonauts could do. Bell-based "Coventry Boy" slows the tempo down, before nearly radio-friendly "Hey, Jane" provides the album's absolute high-point.

To put it short; "Trust Us" has it all: Bent's well known 'tractor'-bass, Snah's thin and slightly off-pitch voice as well as the well known noises of Deathprod. And as that wasn't enough, amongst the line-up one finds people like Ohm and Trygve Seim - one of the leading voices of the new generation of Norwegian jazz -, adding an element of jazz greatly contributing to the beauty of the record.

"Trust Us" marks both the end and the beginning for Motorpsycho; The end of their long travel through the most unlikely corners of rock, and the beginning of an interesting journey in the borderland of jazz and rock. Although looking at ?Trust Us? it is tempting to claim that the band has seen better days, their "In the Fishtank"-session with Jaga Jazzist - another prominent force of the promising Norwegian jazz-scene - shows that the band is still alive and kicking - much harder than most bands may ever dream of.

5 out of 5 stars The End of an Era.......2004-08-26

This was where the Motorpsycho of the 90s had their crowning moment. Although not quite as good as Demon Box, their seminal masterpiece from 1993, this is a masterpiece in its own right. After this release, Motorpsycho left the longer droning jams for more poppy and catchy tunes (although there is always at least one epic track on each subsequent album), at least on their regular studio albums.

Disc 1 starts out with Psychonaut, a song crafted over one chord and in many ways Black to Comm's (MC5 track - often covered by Motorpsycho)little brother. At the same time a song that heralds what is to come. There is a long improvised section in the center that takes more cues from freebag jazz than rock. The next track is the catchy Ozone, before The Ocean in Her Eye takes us into a meditative mood that it is impossible to escape (huh - whoever wanted to escape that soothing feeling). Vortex Surfer continues in the same vein - an absolutely fantastic song that I doubt I'll ever get tired of (it was even played for 24 hrs non-stop by NRK - the Norwegian Broadcasting Company - at the turn of the millennium after a listeners' poll) - it builds and builds, and when the climax comes I am completely spent. Syddhartino comes as a breather before 577 showcases the heavier side of Motorpsycho with its rolling groove.

Disc 2 starts with a treated drum loop that turns out to be Evernine, a song with flares of Zep's Kashmir, yet entirely different. One of my personal faves from the album. Mantric Muffin Stomp is quite fun, but still among the weaker tracks (it's still pretty darn good, though), before Radiance Freq. takes you back into the soothing spheres of dreamland again, only accented by heavy citar (!) interludes. Taifun is yet another droning song that builds up to a roaring climax, before Superstooge presents the loud and obnoxious side of Motorpsycho, with a melody that fights it way onto your mind. The wonderfully quiet Coventry Boy follows before Hey Jane is a worthy end of a fantastic album - catchy and poppy, but without losing the rock groove. The final track, Dolphyn, is much like a parenthesis, but still fits in a weird way.

Trust Us is Motorpsycho taking the musical expressions of John Coltrane into the world of rock. The music is droning, and the improvisations are unexpected. Trust Us is a masterpiece and well worthy a spot in YOUR record collection!
