Keith Moon - 'Two Sides Of The Moon' (Castle) 3 1/2 stars.......2007-07-05
Well, what do you know? Someone actually made this sole Keith Moon solo title MUCH better. Didn't think it could ever be done. I guess if you did what Castle did, take the original 18 track pressing put out on Pet Rock a few years ago, and then reissue it on a 2-CD, 50 song repressing and pack disc two with not only better songs but a couple of Who selections, then make it available as such. Trade in your single disc copy for anything they'll give you, then seek out this. Very nice.
A lot of bonus stuff for an awful album........2006-12-17
As a drummer, Keith Moon is one of my heroes. Besides influencing the greatest drummer of all time, Neil Peart, Moon was actually the first truly ROCK, if not PUNK, drummers. Dude smashed his kit apart for no good reason, drove a Rolls Royce into a swimming pool, and died from ingesting a bazillion pills. I mean, how cool is that?
But Moon is similar to his buddy Ringo Starr - overshadowed by his peers, and honestly, for a reason. Both are awful singers, foppish and silly in nature, and utterly ineffectual in their solo careers.
Two Sides of the Moon is actually Moon's only solo album, and thank god for that. It's awful. It's one of those albums where there's a million guest stars and just about every song is either a 50s r&b cover (complete with cringe-worthy backup female singers) or covers of 60s tunes (including the Beatles and even the Who), and yet nothing sounds good. It's pathetic. Moon sings throughout (like most drummers, he can't sing), and strangely, he doesn't play drums on the album. If I recall, I think Ringo actually plays drums on it, and technically speaking, Ringo is about one-tenth the drummer that Moon was.
Okay, so the original album sucks, but everyone knows that. So let's rate the re-release. It's actually quite impressive - Sanctuary has offered the original album, plus 40 - yes 40! - tracks of studio outtakes, unreleased tunes, and dopey studio banter.
Now, none of it is extraordinarily amazing for the casual Who or Beatles fan, but this is a lot of interesting stuff for the completist. So I'm giving this sucker 3 stars because it's a lot of bang for your buck, but ultimately, all this stuff - including the original album - should've just remained in the vault.
Who Cares?.......2006-10-29
Facetious, self indulgent and virtually impossible to listen to. As the liner notes point out, it was a time of solo albums. That trapped the great sideman, Keith Moon, in a frontman's body, and it wasn't a good fit. Some engineers and marketing people took his money. Ringo Starr came along to jam and groove along. There are up to five versions of some songs on this 50-song, two-CD set, and there's no good reason for that.
If you think Keith Moon could do no wrong, then you'll find nothing wrong with this record. If you have the patience to identify your favorite versions of the included songs and produce your own disc with just those versions and none of the extraneous studio banter, you'll have a more or less decent product. If neither of those scenarios describes you, then buy an anthology of The Who and remember how great a player Keith Moon was with that most powerful and precise of British rock bands.

Keith Moon s' favorite ones!.......2006-07-24
Keith Moon, THE WHO s' drummer, recorded one complete solo cd and half a second one. In this cd, he reunites with his best musical mates: Joe Walsh, John Lennon, Ringo Starr, Klaus Voorman and Harry Nilson among others. Keith Moon was a BEACH BOYS fan, son here he includes his favorite song DONT WORRY BABY. John Lennon plays guitar and backin vocals in his "Move Over Mrs L." (perhaps dedicated to Yoko?. Keith also covers a beautiful Beatles song: "In my life".. The Who is covered by him also "The Kids are alright" sounds outstanding!!!
"Crazy like a Fox" is total fun!! Other songs are also an expresion of his love for his friends (Together) and idols (Teenage Idol). This is a solid cd because register the love of Keith Moon for life, his friends, his idols and his band...
For fans: He also sings/plays on the John Entwistle 1975 produced cd: Flash Fearless. He plays on one track with KENNEY JONES and with John Entwistle singin/Playing: "To the Shop"
For absolute fans: there is a song with Keith Moon singing on the "All This and WWII" soundtrack. He sings "When I am 64" by the Beatles..... an age he never reach. It is a killer version....
The Moon's The Limit.......2004-05-25
Keith's only release but it is a great one. Once I listened to it, I could not stop. On the anniversary of his death, I called a local radio station to play one of these songs but they refused. The dj said people identify with The Who and not Keith Moon as a solo artist. Their loss! I am glad to see it is still available!
Superb!.......2001-04-21
This album is excellent! It collects the wild energy of Moon the Loon and includes rock greats like Ringo Starr, Dick Dale, members of Flo and Eddie, and great session man Klaus Voorman. This album icludes great covers of other songs and has many bonus tracks. I LOVE IT!
IT'S NUMBER 1..........2001-03-01
This album is absolutely great. Between the drum solos on songs like The Kids are Alright and the inclusion of greats like Ringo Starr. It is an album for a true fan. I loved it and listen to it daily.

The Late, Legendary who Drummer Occasionally Played on Other Peoples' Records, but He Only Finished and Released this One Solo Album of his Own in 1975. Not Taken Seriously at the Time, the Set Captured the Essence of Moon's Nature. Recorded in a Series of Marathon Sessions that were as Notable for their Huge Bills for Alcohol as the Studio Time Involved, it is a Strange, Haunting Mix of Innocent '50s/Early-'60s Rock and Roll and Leering, Joyful Lust and a Savage Sense of Wit Directed at the Music Business and Played Out Both Between and in the Songs Themselves. It was a Star Studded Affair, Accompanied by Pals Ringo Starr and Harry Nilsson. It Includes Nearly Two Hours of Bonus Material that Has Never Seen the Light of Day Before.

Not his best face, but his only truth, live and let die........2007-01-07
My own review?
By so far,the only testimony of the deeper bright side of Moon, the Loon. A loner, not the craziest rock'n'roll performer, but almost. And the best, done with his best mates, the heavy drinkers, specially Ringo Star. Ringo's son? Zak is performing with The Who. Who else?
Not so bad.......2006-09-26
I wonder why so many people hate this album. OK it is not the kind of record you would have thought that a serious rock musician like Keith Moon should have done. It is done in a very camp english way. OK he is horrible as a singer but I still think there are some endearing moments here. Maybe it is not the album worthy of a double extended version treatment.
Why???.......2006-08-23
Why re-release this travesity. I loved Keith Moon - as a drummer - but this is just plain bad. I still have the vinyl version and never listen to it. Maybe the extras are worth it, but I would never pay for this thing new.

An Extraordinary User-Friendly Multimedia Dvorák Biography.......2004-04-28
I have followed with interest the series of CDs explaining popular operas by Jeremy Siepmann, an American musicologist long resident in Britain. Each of those is a single CD with a spoken text interspersed with longish excerpts from the opera in question. This 4-CD set, though, is something else again. It is a combination of music/audio CDs with superimposed CD-ROM material (on the same discs). One plays the audio portion on your regular stereo equipment. When put in your PC or Mac CD drive, the CD-ROM portion of the discs brings up an extensive set of hyperlinked text materials as well as links to the CDs from which the musical examples are taken (all from the Naxos music recordings library, of course). Also included in the CD-ROM material is the full text of Siepmann's detailed biography of Dvorák. There is also a thick booklet that includes cast lists (various actors playing various important people in Dvorák's life), an extensive essay about the sociopolitical and cultural conditions extant during Dvorák's life, an longish essay about his major works and their significance, a graded listening plan, an article outlining recommended reading, biographical snippets about each of the important people in Dvorák's life, a chronological calendar of Dvorák's life, and an extensive glossary of musical and other pertinent terms.
Siepmann's four-and-a-half-hour exploration of Dvorák's life and works is in his wonted polished, often witty, prose. It is read gracefully by Siepmann himself. Dvorák is played by the suave-voiced British actor, Sean Barrett. The musical examples are extensive, often including complete movements, arias, etc., and are placed expertly within the flow of the text. Production values for this budget-priced set are quite high.
I will admit that I had a particular interest in this production as I grew up in a rural Oklahoma town settled by Bohemians (Czechs) and came to love some of Dvorák's music before even that of Bach, Mozart and Beethoven. I've already recommended this set to the public schools and town library in my hometown.
I am not quite sure who the intended audience for this set is. Presumably there are those, like me, who are insatiable when it comes to increasing their knowledge of classical music, its composers and their sociocultural milieu. One also imagines that even in these days of decreasing support for music and music appreciation courses in our schools, there are teachers who could make wonderful use of this material for their students. Whoever the audience is, I cannot imagine a listener coming away from this set without a great deal more information and appreciation for the genius of Antonin Dvorák.
Recommended.

Customer Reviews:
A disappointment, but I still love Keith...........2006-07-01
This was a disappointment. I thought it would be a showcase for Keith's very funny (and very British) sense of humour. Instead, it was a straight forward rock album, and not a very good one at that. It's sort of like a film which has tons of celebrity cameos in it. It may be fun for those who make it (and if you read the liner notes here, the recording sessions were a mammoth drunk marathon that would still be going on if the record company didn't pull the plug on it), but it isn't much fun to listen to. It's not horrible, but just so ORDINARY, and describing Keith Moon as ordinary is sacreligious. He was an outlaw, pirate, generally insane (especially on Wednesdays) man who was the greatest rock drummer ever (or, at least one of the greatest). So I thought this album would have been funnier and a lot more fun. I listened it to it a few times, accepting it was just a rock album with Keith having a good time with his friends, but I still didn't like it. There's always Quadrophenia to listen to. Keith is still one of the greatest, anyway...
Not that horrible really.......2006-06-21
OK. Some people are really unfair with this album. The problem is that Keith Moon was reagrded as one of the best and most innovative drummers of his time and this album does not really reflect that.It is also somewhat of a musician's album in the sense that he has chosen to ill-advisedly collaborate with some superstar friends. Add to this the fact that singing was maybe not his greatest talent. The album was also maybe recorded during his personal darkest period and left alone to himself he is not surrounded by the Who to focus his vision. However it is in many ways an endaerng album since it shows thatd espite his madman antics he had a profound love for pop songs and that while he was maybe no longer able to perform such material he was at least motivated by it. Also as another reviewer has said it is much less pretentiuous and self-indulgent than some other Who solo albums. I originally bought it on cassette in the Arvika Domus and still enjoy it to this day once or twice a year.
And now for a collage of crap..........2005-08-12
This is a reissue of Keith Moon's only solo album. It is a bit of a disappointment. Keith was known as the best drummer in rock, and he barely plays the drums on any of the songs here. This album is more along the lines of "Keith sings some songs, with the help from some of his buddies". It definitely sounds like Keith had a lot of fun making this album, but the listener may not share in the fun. There was a reason that Keith rarely sang on Who records, other than the occasional "joke" song. The CD adds several bonus tracks, including a radio spot, alternate takes and songs from Keith's unfinished second album. Some fans of the Who may enjoy this album, but I expect that most people won't like it.
Keith Moon - 'Two Sides Of The Moon' (Pet Rock).......2005-03-06
Unless you're an absolute Who/Keith Moon(R.I.P.)completist,you just might want to avoid this CD altogether.A total of eighteen tracks that was apparently Moon's only solo effort.Thank goodness for that! Was first released in 1975.Take it from me,every Townsend,Daltrey&Entwistle(R.I.P.)solo album are WAY better than this disc.I've seen used copies of this CD in several music stores that have been collecting dust for years.A true lemon.
For die-hards and completists only..........2004-09-26
This is a remastered reissue of Moon's one and only solo album with 8 bonus tracks. Helping Moon out is a who's who of rock...Ringo, Flo & Eddie, Bowie, Nilsson, Joe Walsh, Ronnie Wood, Ricky Nelson, Steve Cropper, John Sebastan, Dick Dale, Spencer Davis, Jim Keltner, Bobby Keys, Klauss Vorman and various members of Jo Jo Gunne. So how could this suck so bad? Two reasons...1) Keith Moon sings 2) Keith Moon plays drums on only one song (Kids Are Alright). This is for die-hards and completists only.
